Went in on May 18, two older guys greeted us nicely. Sat down wasn't pleased they didn't have aguas frescas. Nothing on the menu looked appealing we had already ordered our drinks & an appetizer. The chips & salsa tasted old. We decided to take the appetizer instead & just leave the restaurant. It's also really dark inside & everything looks old & dirty. Sorry but we won't be back. Visiting family and just wanted nice little family dinner for 3 ppl, and I was craving Mexican food. As Waco locals, my mom and stepdad recommended this restaurant. I normally don't eat dinner at 5:30PM...but was in the company of a 75 & 83 year old. Surprisingly, the place was already hopping. The service was friendly. And the waitress mentioned she was training a new staff member. Like many restaurants in Waco there was a "help wanted" sign positioned prominently out front. My stepfather and I both opted for good ol' traditional cheese enchilada dinner with beans and rice. I also ordered an additional small order of guacamole. I was a little disappointed to see that the two scoops of guacamole had started to turn brown. My mom ordered the Chile Rellenos, and her plate was filled with a nice large poblano pepper covered in cheese and sauce. My Sangria was straight out of the bottle and nothing special (no fruit, etc) We all agreed that the portion sizes were perfect. And left satisfied but not overstuffed. read more

Had cheese dip and chips appetizer and Baylor burrito. The cheese they use is really bland so the dip was not so good and they didn't have any additional things in the queso. I ate here with my family the other night. The restaurant is large and was easily able to accommodate my party of 7. Unfortunately they did not have a sling and the baby was sleeping so I didn't want to wake him to put him in a high chair so we had to flip a high chair to put his car seat in. I hate doing this. It isn't very safe, but it is all they had. Unfortunately the hostess was kind of rude. She took me to the table. Then she got the high chair and she sort of left it in the vicinity of the table. She didn't put it next to the table or flip it upside down. She seemed very agitated that I should even ask for such a thing. Our server arrived and she was much more friendly, but seemed like she was really busy. The restaurant didn't seem that busy, but I got the feeling she was doing everything including making our drinks. She just seemed a bit flustered and overwhelmed. She took our orders and brought us chips and salsa. They basically brought a salsa for every person at our table which was kind of cool. The salsa was pretty good, but it had a pretty heavy onion flavor to it. The chips were too thick for my liking. I had a house margarita which was good. I had the chicken enchiladas with rice and beans which were great. The sauce could've been a bit warmer, but I really enjoyed them. They gave my nephew a beef burrito when he ordered a bean burrito. My sister in law enjoyed the Enchiladas Suizas and my dad the Baylor Burrito. The prices were very reasonable and the food was overall very good, but the service was a bit of a miss. read more

On Friday evening, April 23, my family and I went to Abuelita's on Valley Mills. I had chicken tacos, my husband had chicken enchiladas, and our daughter had a taco salad with ground beef. As we were leaving, I remarked to my husband that I had a bad taste in my mouth. Later that night, I developed severe diarrhea--it was clear I had food poisoning. My husband also felt queasy all night but never got sick. On Saturday morning after having diarrhea at least ten times during the night, I fainted in the bathroom and hit my head hard on the tile floor, knocking myself completely unconscious. My husband took me to Urgent Care and they ran a multitude of tests including a CT scan, EKG, and metabolic panel, and gave me an IV to help with the dehydration. I was told I most likely had a concussion, though I fortunately did not have a brain bleed. The bump on my head, the size of an egg, is now down to the size of an almond over a month later. Four days after my first faint, I fainted again, though the second time I fortunately just "slid down the bathroom door" so I didn't land hard when I hit the floor. Today, we received and paid two bills from Premier ER Plus, totaling nearly $550 AFTER insurance! Although I did contact the health department to alert them of my food poisoning when it happened, I wanted to be sure that Abuelita's was actually followed up with, and that they know what an ordeal this has been. Besides the trauma of getting food poisoning and a concussion, I had to miss work that weekend. All in all, this little dinner escapade ended up costing me close to $1000. Abuelita's, clean up your kitchen. Regardless, I won't be coming back. read more

Our server was quite rude and messed up my order because he was constantly in a rush to leave the table. I have food allergies so being ignored when ordering never goes over well. Good highlights of our meal included their warm friendly customer service from all the servers we spoke to, the side of handmade flour tortillas, and the side of guac and queso for the chips. Also, the main dishes came out significantly fast for a busy dinner evening. We were told they were 'a bit behind' and there may be delays - thankfully we didn't experience delays. However, we did experience the main meal being incorrect, flavorless and blan. The main meal itself I believe was incorrect, and was not flavorful. The 'Enchillada Dinner' on their menu says the sauce is chile con carne sauce. However my chicken enchillada dinner came with this white cream cheese spread/topping on it. Instead of sending it back I thought to myself, "they're clearly busy, i'll go ahead and try it. Who knows, maybe i'll like it". Wrong. Blan. Tasteless. It was thick with no flavor. It didn't compliment my entire meal and therefore couldnt be mixed in with the rice and beans either. I scraped the entirety of this topping off the enchillada and onto a seperate plate. The refried beans had a smokehouse taste I'm not used to and the corn tortilla on my enchillada was so dry, (even with some of the blan sauce on it). Now I seperated the dry corn tortilla from the chicken. I ordered a side of flour tortillas and used that to eat the leftover chicken and rice and beans with. Their handmade tortilla made all the difference for what would've been a horrible experience. Our server kindly told me with ordering a chicken enchillada, it comes with a different sauce than the said 'chile con carne'. Sadly, I must've missed that on the menu under 'Enchillada Dinner'...? Overall, not too happy. Won't be back unless it's for the handmade flour tortillas and the guacamole and queso for the chips. read more

The restaurant was nearly empty when I walked in and the host/old man at the counter sort of looked shocked that someone was walking in for an early dinner. Food isn't great and the frozen margarita was sort of a half/frozen melty drink. The chile con queso doesn't really have chiles in it. It's just sort of yellow goo. Doesn't taste great. I had crispy beef tacos. They were okay, just a little bland. I came here because I read somewhere that this was the best margarita in town but it isn't. Service is good. BUT we always give places multiple chances. In the end, it was not worth the time. I'm writing this review a year later. I just wanted to make sure to put it out there. Before I start, all of these 5 star ratings must be coming from close friends and family because . . . . .. Juan of the worst places in Waco and perhaps - in the entirety of what is our Universe!!! His menu says fine Mexican dining but the only fine dining you'll experience, is when you get home and pull out those taco bell left overs from your fridge. I honestly dont know where to start. The tortillas... let's start there. FAKE!! The tortillas Were lame and mediocre, they taste as if they had bought em from HEB right down the road, AND they Probably did! They were not made to order like Rosa's or countless other Real Mexican restaurants around the Waco neighborhood. The killer was that she brought them out cold; YES they might be cheap knock offs of the real thing but come ON abuelitas... at least heat em up!! Anyways.. Our meals had barely any flavor and seemed bland; also, our waitress was a mess. She was slow and had little to no sense of timing or direction. She brought out one meal - way before the other. So when I waited on my Signifcant others order to arrive, my tasteless beans were further damaged from sitting out under a ceiling fan for almost 15 minutes. The rest of my meal was stone cold when the rest of our food got there. I confronted the waitress bout this and her response left me captivated. "Huh? Ok?" Is what she said followed by aimlessly walking away. Geez... What else? Oh! We asked for Green sauce and what she brought out was RED sauce, I know it was just a simple mistake and I should give them a pass right? You be the judge. I proceeded to tell her that we had ordered green sauce and not red. She says to us, "That is the GREEN SAUCE, Sometimes its green, sometimes its red and"... get ready for this... "SOMETIMES ITS YELLOW!" What in the name of Uranus's anus? Who in the blue devil makes yellow sauce??? Two possibilities existed for me. 1. She was a crazy person. 2. She was clinically sane but the restaurant had created some unholy abomination never before seen in the history of fine Mexican cuisine. I chose to go with 1 and 2. Yes she was a crazy person but she had enough sense to tell me the truth. Anyway, the chips and salsa were rubbery just barely edible... barely. The environment seemed .. . Odd. The other Mexican waitresses kept watching us through a wall by the kitchen which had brick size holes in the shapes of diamonds or something ... or another... I was creeped out the entire time. They watched us eat and then chatted and laughed amongst themselves. I can only imagine what they were up to... I'll never know. ::shiver:: Odd I tell you.... odd. Anyways, this place is made for Northern folk who dont know what Real chips or Real salsa or Real tortillas are suppose to taste like. It was a disaster at best. Ana was amazing! We are traveling through in across country trip. The reviews were good but stated the service was not swell. But I'm here to say it was AMAZING! Walked in and got seated right away, our server (Ana) came and asked us for drinks, brought 2 salsas, checked on us regularly and our good was hot and our quick!
