Came here for a date night and all of our food was bad. I've never had unseasoned African food until I came here. I'm shocked it has such decent reviews. We order the Moi Moi, it was hard. We got the Edikang Ikong and Yam porridge and neither was worth it. The food was salt less and season less. The meat tasted like someone boiled it and through it in the dish. I honestly don't know who made these dishes. We only ate it because it was pricey and it's a small business. I don't recommend anyone to come here unless it's for cocktails and good music. I try to give Abuja a shot, chance after chance. I ordered, a very simple, Jollof rice with goat meat. As a Nigerian, who has eatin this dish probably hundreds of times, I expect nothing but great jollof rice (especially given the constant talk for the throne - vs Ghana, Senegal, etc). However, Abuja never has listened to m numerous simple plea over the months: JOLLOF RICE WITH GOAT MEAT SHOULD HAVE STEW IN IT. I SHOULD NOT have to worry about choking on very dry rice especially given it's a small plate for $22!!!! The least you can do is put ATLEAST ONE SPOON OF STEW. What's more appalling is I've been a customer since the days the dish used to cost $16, then $18, then $20, then $22. Owner: if you're going to raise the price, please atleast make the food digestible, and not feel like I have to chug cold Gatorade after every bite. The saddest part is when I ask the operator over the phone to please make sure there's stew, he promised there will be! On top of that, he said it'd be an extra $2, for a side cup of stew!!! Please don't raise the price and also start charging for ingredients that are originally supposed to be part of the dish! This is a great spot if you aren't actually Nigerian and know how the food should taste. The pepper soup was just boiled meat broth, little to no flavor, and the coloring was wildly off. I wish we would've remembered to take pictures. Everything else we got (jollof rice, egusi soup, pounded yam, suya) was mid and we would've been better off just staying at home. I remember going many years back when I was a teenager and can't remember the food leaving so much to be desired. Now, it's more a of a lounge-y club atmosphere, so possibly if they got new management the food went downhill. Giving two stars because at least the waitress was nice. tl;dr If you have Nigerian parents that know how to cook, just eat at home. It is my go to for Fish w/ attieke. It's a generous portion, and delicious. Grilled lamb is delicious, however, the sides are so bland. At $35 a pop, it feels so overpriced to pay for 4 pieces of lamb. I may re-order with coconut rice, just to try something different. There is a sauce that comes with this, it's very tart and I usually throw it out. The meat tastes good on it's own. Do not order the jollof. It's just plain rice with coloring. I like their beef stew and he likes their fried beef. The food is priced with the ambiance. Our food costs about $40 for the two of us without tip and drinks. The wait for calling in your order is 40 minutes minimum. Entrance during the day is through the front door on Burnet Ave but after hours come through the rear door across from the parking lot. There is street parking available but please do not park in the lot before 10 pm or risk getting ticketed and/or towed. It is usually packed on the weekends and they are open until 2 am. The lighting is great and the dj is really good. Bathrooms are very clean as well. They have a few big screens and a wall projector for game nights. I've been going to Abuja for about 10 years. The food is always tasty and hot, made fresh to order so there will be a long wait. We usually order about an hour and a half ahead of when we want to pick it up (and we always call before leaving home to make sure it's ready). If you've never been there and are undecided, just order early and give it a chance. If you order the suya, moi moi and okra stew/egusi with grenadine soda to wash it all down, you won't be disappointed. The only issue is that the food is really expensive and it's a small portion of food. But that won't deter us from going. First, the GOOD points: my order was ready & delivered on time AND the plantains were good (that's the 2 stars). The NEGATIVE points: pounded yam was wrapped in aluminum & as I unrolled it, pieces of aluminum kept getting stuck. Not a big deal but kinda inconvenient when it's still hot. The egusi (which I was looking forward to) "looked" like a lot, but it wasn't. After going through the bowl, it was 80% bones & chewy skin (inedible). I managed to find 2 small pieces of beef, which was even more disappointing when you think about the price point!! The after taste also made it difficult to finish & I ended up throwing it out. I ate at this restaurant on March 28. My second time there. Food is good, ambiance and service is good as well. But.... Someone stole my credit card info this time. On April 12 a charge was made for $137.44. Me giving the benefit of the doubt, I checked to see if my charge from March 28 had gone through. It in fact had and was for a completely different amount. I tried reaching out to the restaurant to rectify this but was immediately shut down by whoever answered the phone. In an abrupt tone they told me they "didn't know who I was" and would not discuss this matter over the phone, only in person. This restaurant is about an hour from me. I was not driving there. Since the employee didn't want to help, I took it up with my bank and filed a fraud claim. While the transaction is still pending, I see on Monday morning whoever used the card gave themselves a nice fat $50 tip and now my card is being charged $187.44. I saw all of these reviews and at first it discouraged me from going. However, my friend spoke really highly of Abuja so I decided to go for myself and was pleasantly surprised! The food was amazing, wow! I ordered the chicken with jollof rice and plantains. Everything was fresh, hot and flavorful. The chicken came with this fabulous sauce as it was phenomenal. I usually love a sweeter plantain but since everything else was so flavorful I didn't mind it not being sweet. Then I ordered a drink and it came in a nice sized plastic cup with a good amount of liquor. It was bomb! I forgot to mention, we sat outside and there was a good amount of SAFE social distanced space. The waiters were also attentive and kind, which is a plus. I went here with two coworkers at the suggestion of one. She is Nigerian and her brother raved about the spot. It did not disappoint from the moment we walked through the door the Ambiance was beautiful. There was a semi low-lighting a full-length bar and several intimate seats around the perimeter with soft benches on one side and chairs on the other. We were met with a friendly waitress and she took out orders. She was very professional and had such a great attitude it was really a pleasure to work with her. Our food took some time to come but I really can't be but so mad because that means that the rice was freshly cooked as well as the rest of the food. I ordered chicken and jollof rice. My two co-workers ordered goat and one had fried white rice one had jollof rice. The jollof rice was spicy and the chicken was very hot. So if you like spicy order the chicken it will not disappoint. The next time I come back it will be on my lunch break as this food is delicious enough to make a run for eat half and then take the other half home for dinner.
