Wow, it has been years since I've written a review, yet I feel strongly enough to do so today. My daughter has been going to Academy 831 for the past year or so, and she started when she was around 4 years old. In the beginning, I enjoyed having my daughter here because there are big windows where I can see how she is doing, and the place is clean and spacious enough to not feel crowded. That is still the case, and the front staff is very friendly, accommodating, and informative with everything that goes on at this studio. I have had very little interaction with the owner so I can't speak to that, but overall this place seemed like a good fit for the past year or so. However, over the past 6 months or so, I've noticed a change in my child's behavior when it comes to participating in dance class. I believe that difficult situations can make my kid stronger in most regards, so I chose to observe rather than pull her out of dance as soon as she wanted. I am able to take my daughter to dance class every other Wednesday, and what I've observed is a complete lack of empathy, compassion, and kindness from Miss Megan, one of the dance teachers that teaches on Wednesday's from 5-6 pm. Over the course of a few months, I noticed some instances that I kind of brushed off as structure and a part of the growth process; but now that I look back on it, I was so very wrong. Some instances include: when my kid was having a bloody nose before dance class and she wanted to come out to blow her nose during class, Miss Megan did not allow her to. When my kid said she needed to use the restroom, Miss Megan did not allow her to. I have heard Miss Megan say, "you're fine, you don't need your Mommy" on multiple occasions. Yesterday, was my final straw. Yesterday, my kid was having a rough day. She fell during class, and she had a noticeable cry out. She looked like it hurt her to continue. I opened the class door to say "what happened?" Miss Megan said "oh she just fell, she's fine." Did Miss Megan physically walk over to check on her? No. Later on towards the class, my kid got her finger slammed by the door while going into the classroom after changing into her tap shoes. She immediately fell to the floor. While I'm holding my 2 year old, I yell out to my husband to go help my child who is on the floor in tears from the pain. Where is Miss Megan? Sitting on her bottom. The only thing she moved were her eyes. Not even a single intent to move her body to check on an injured child. This speaks volumes to how much she cares about the children she "teaches." Thank you to the owner, Christa (I'm gathering from yelp review replies), for offering an ice pack, as I'm fumbling to try to get a cold water bottle from the vending machine, and a bandaid for my inconsolable child. My kid's finger has a huge cut and her nail is black and blue, I wouldn't be surprised if the nail falls off during the healing process. I'd like this to serve as a reminder. These "dance teachers" are teaching CHILDREN. Children have immature brains and cannot process situations easily. They need to feel safe and nurtured and they need to feel like their basic needs can be met easily, such as having the freedom to use the bathroom when they need to or find their Mommy to blow their nose if they can't breathe through it. We will be finishing up this "season" of dance because my kid likes to perform, and we will be looking for a new studio that has a little more compassion and passion for teaching children. I'm a pediatric provider, and this is 100% NOT the way we should be treating our kids. As long as Miss Megan is a teacher at this school, there is no place for my children here. read more

What can I say about Academy 831?! Oh.. that they are super amazing. It feels like home every time we walk in. They are organized, dynamic, supportive, and fun. The studio is always clean and up to date. The families there are friendly and inviting, and the coaches are great! We have been there for just about a year now and it has been a great experience for us and our two daughters. 6 and 4. We have been enfolded in the winter performance and now summer. We have made some great friends. Plus our daughters have built some amazing skills from the teachers. I would 10/10 recommend this place to anyone who wants to bring their kids and help them enjoy dancing. read more

We had a great experience at Academy 831. Our 5 year old son joined the hip hop class. They had a winter recital and offered everyone an opportunity to sign up for the recital even our beginner. Every time I had a question (or 2) the staff members were always friendly and helpful! The class he attended switched days which interferes with his sport schedule so we are taking a break for now but plan to return again soon! I recommend this dance studio. read more

My daughter 7 yr old Ava has been been attending Academy 831 since she was 3 yrs old and I cannot express how much of a blessing they have been in her life. We love how Academy 831's approach to dance is not simply teaching dance techniques but more importantly helping to guide Ava to a complete and confident young woman with strong family values. They often have the kids do special home projects; like for Thanksgiving making them express what they are thankful for on a trace out of their hand where they display at the studio. My son does not want to be a dancer, but he is involved in an activity that involves coordination, movement and choreography. I have known Krista, the owner, for many years and she was an excellent teacher and mentor to my daughters in dance, basically teaching all three of them how to dance! So when my son needed to take a dance/movement class to improve his skills in this area, I didn't hesitate to look into Academy 831 and somehow fit a class there into his schedule! He attended the first class this week with Charme being the teacher. He and I both felt very welcome as we were greeted at the front desk and it wasn't long before Charme came to say hello and to welcome him into the class. He has so much to learn, but he felt encouraged after that first class and is looking forward to returning next week. Please keep in mind that he has never taken a dance class at a studio before -ever! Again, he was so encouraged after this class and felt that it will help him in the future. Having grown up in a "small town" feeling studio and then dancing for many years after that, when my daughter asked to start ballet, the struggle to find the "right" studio began. Academy 831 was our third try over a couple of years. Not only did the first 2 studio did I not feel completely comfortable at but I could tell my daughter didn't either. Coming to Academy 831 felt like home. We both felt comfortable and for the first time my daughter wants to continue with dance! I couldn't think of going anywhere else! There are small class sizes, super friendly teachers who also get great results out of their students, there's a "no pressure" feel, Allie at the front desk is awesome, and we have enjoyed it so much that this "over the hill, retired ballerina" just might start taking classes again! Between trial classes and actual-enrolled classes, my daughter has had no less than 10 dance teachers prior to enrolling in Academy 831. Miss Krista is by far the most amazing dance teacher we've encountered. Under her leadership, Academy 831 provides a place where kids can develop not only dance skills, but also love for dancing and personal confidence -- this sounds so cliche, yet it is true in my daughter's case. Can you imagine how difficult that mission is to achieve? It requires true passion and a gift for teaching. Also, Every staff I've met there is nice, kind, and patient. Our girls started attending Academy 831 when it was at the old location on Brea Blvd. I was immediately impressed by the girls' ballet instructor, Miss Megan, who was always positive and encouraging and great with teaching proper technique so that the girls would not risk getting hurt by learning bad habits that could cause problems later in life. Now the studio is at a new location on Central and Puente and it's a nice space with a little more room which gives them even more flexibility for their offerings. The same great people are there--the owner Miss Krista, the front desk admin Miss Allie, and the kind teachers. They are all very welcoming and friendly. I like the age appropriate music. I like the choice of modest costumes for recitals if your child decides to participate. We homeschool and it's great that this studio is an approved vendor for our charter school so that we can use our educational funds to pay for classes. read more

I can not be happier with our experience at Academy 831. I love that they value small class size. As a child dancer myself, and now a mother I wanted my child to be valued in her class. Her teacher and the owner welcome her by name each day. She is often in class with just a handful of students and often there is a teacher assistant as well.
