This is not your small neighborhood vet office anymore. They went corporate years ago but I think VCA requires them to follow procedures in certain ways that make it difficult for me as a pet owner. It starts with simple things like filling a prescription and continues with a request for a simple form to be filled out. The level of difficulty for something that previously was easily resolved with a phone call is ridiculous. Also prices used to be moderate and I was willing to drive an hour to get there and have my pet seen by Dr. Lewis. Now it's not worth the drive anymore. Yelp shows me a "recent" 5 star review from 2016. It's now ten years later guys and things have changed but sadly not for the better. read more

After four years, the sentiment really doesn't matter, not even worth the stamp to mail. I guess better late than never ..but pretty much feels like an insult at this point. I have taken multiple animals to Academy Animal Hospital for years, and I the veterinarians, technicians, and office staff are fantastic! They are thorough, knowledgeable, friendly, and honest. I have taken animals there for standard check ups, vaccinations, and even more serious problems, and have always gotten excellent medical treatment and care. I even had to take my dog to another specialist in Annapolis that Dr. Lewis recommended as part of his cancer treatment, and was happy to learn that Academy Animal Hospital and veterinarians are well respected by doctor colleagues, even well outside of Baltimore! I've mainly seen Dr. Lewis, who is fantastic and very accessible, but all the vets are very thorough with all exams, listen carefully and patiently, and are very clear when they tell me exactly what my animals need and when they need it. I am confident that they are always getting the care they need and never feel they are trying to "upsell" a product or service. If I ever have a question about services beforehand or when I'm paying, the staff are happy to estimate in advance or talk to me about any charges. They're very clear and communicate well, but they're not psychic. If you have any questions, ask. I also appreciate that they were doing curbside and consistent with Covid protocols throughout the pandemic, for the safety of humans AND all the animals that come in there. Let's remember that animals also can contract Covid, and when any health professionals are out with Covid, that's less access to health care for us or for our pets! I'm glad they're still cautious and clearly focused on what's best for the animals, staff, and pet owners who come in the building. They do not take appointments, which is great for people like me who have fluctuating work schedules, but keep in mind that you might have to wait a little while to be seen. If it's too long for you, just come back another time, if possible and if it's not an emergency. If you call ahead, they will give you their best guess about a good time to come in, but remember that's just a guess because everyone is walking in without an appointment. If you get there and call to let them know you have parked, they'll let you know their estimation of how long of a wait it will be, and then you can decide if that works with your schedule or if you want to find a better time, like right when they open. You do have to call when you get there and they'll call you when it's your turn to enter with your pet. That's great for Covid, and it's also less stressful for my pets. It's a small animal hospital but it has everything the staff need to provide high quality care for pets. If you want to pay a lot more for a fancier building, posh waiting room chairs, and a bunch of bells and whistles that really don't have anything to do with animal care, go for it. I'll stick with Academy Animal Hospital for high quality medical services at a reasonable price with staff I trust who are kind to all the people and pets who go there. read more

After trying over 20 Dog and Cat Centers in the Baltimore area for an appointment for my injured dog, Academy Animal Hospital was able to see my dog, Twilight, within a few hours of my phone call. The staff was excellent and I was able to be with my dog during the exam. I would highly recommend Academy Animal Hospital to all pet lovers. They truly care for animals and the expertise and professionalism was outstanding. P.S. Even my regular vet told me I had to wait at least four days for an appointment. My rescue cat Judy had developed terrible matting due to the corduroy bed she was sleeping in. Who knew you shouldn't put a long haired cat in a corduroy lined bed! Me I guess lol I managed to get some of it out using a matting comb but couldn't get it all. The people here (and they are THE BEST!) managed to shave her where she needed it and without anesthetic, and took SUCH good care of her. Very poor customer service. I called to renew my dog, THOR and I was told suddenly that they had turned to curbside service due to an outbreak at another location. I was told that Dr. Lewis would return my call today and this did not happen. I wanted to speak to him to see if l can come inside with my animal. This is a great practice, but in a not-so-great location. We take our dog to Dr. Lewis exclusively and really like him a lot. Our first interaction with him was when we came in to pick up our newly adopted dog. He was sitting in a chair holding a kitten and petting it while wrapped up in a towel. He told us that the cat was just coming out of anesthesia. I've never seen a vet do that before. We were sold. He is very caring and takes his time when talking to you about your concerns. He returns phone calls quickly and ENCOURAGES you to call him as your pet is recovering/healing as often as you want. The office has great hours and has a few late nights a week (don't remember which) when they are open until 7p. Most of the staff are just as friendly have have years of experience behind them. Now, let's talk about location. The office is located in a small strip mall in a not-so-nice section of Baltimore. I've been yelled at by the owner of a hair salon in their shopping center for parking in front of their store and have been blocked in to the parking lot by people shopping at the hardware store next door. There also isn't much room to turn pull out of your parking spot so you wind up having to pull out into traffic. Those are the reasons they lost a star. read more

Too start my neighbor recommend this vet. &if you ask me this Place is not to be trusted ! I took my 5 month old Doberman pup in for a new patient visit for his booster shot. I was offered the rabies shot for my dog & heart worm medicine all together ...I left paying about 120$. The staff we very friendly and helpful by making recommending HOWEVER, they didn't even actually give my pup what I thought he needed. So now I have to make another unnecessary trip to the vet for the 4th booster shot so when I was told originally that the dog only needs 3. I think the vet maybe with some shady business in my opinion. Also, when I called I was told that all new patient don't have to make an appointment and were seen on a walk-in basis so this time even tho we were a walk-in(by curbside). I think we spend about 1.5 -2 hours there (between the wait and getting seen)which was long ...looking for new vet recommendations.. read more

We've been bringing our 6 year old mutt here for 4 years and haven't had any problems until our last annual visit. The vet told us that our dog was very healthy but if we wanted to try a different food, he recommended Purina. I've checked several sites that analyze the quality of pet food, and Purina did not rate well. Found it very strange that he would offer that. Thinking about switching to another vet. I live maybe a mile away and haven't had any trouble with the neighborhood or with most of the parking issues that Adam S. has raised. I love Academy! They have been nothing but amazing to us and our wolf gang. We had a rescued dalmatian who constantly had an infection due to a bad spay. The animal rescue where we got her from did a horrible job spaying her and since then she would get an infection twice a year near her incision and belly button. For years the other vets from different states would simply treat the infection. Dr. Lewis from academy suggested a surgery to rectify the actual problem and using lambs skin. Splash had the surgery and since then no more infections. Our other dog Mr. Pogo was attacked by a Rottweiler, we called the animal hospital at 6:50 (they close at 7) and they told us they would stay open for us. They saved his life and worked hours after closing to stabilize him. There are 3 vets, all are great. Dr. Lewis is our personal favorite as he has been our trusted vet for 15 years. The other male vet is knowledgeable and friendly. The lady vet (I'm sorry I don't know their names) is just as knowledgeable and seems to really love cats. The office staff are caring and the most sincerest people you will ever meet. They love what they do and it shows. Bernie is the office manager and has been for 20 years. People often think she is short or a little on the abrasive side . What I can tell you about Bernie is she is actually one of the nicest and most caring person you'll ever meet. She comes off grumpy but will move mountains for you and your pups. She might be snippy when you first walk in but by the time they call you to bring your pooch back she is your best friend. The other ladies remember your pups names and genuinely care about them. We lost our boy George a year ago and these people were so good to my now elderly mom. They took care of him and her when she brought him in alone. They sealed the deal for me to continue to us them even though I live in Philly. Dr. Lewis came to our home with his nurse and put Mr. Pogo down. He was able to be comfortable in his own home on his favorite blanket. I can not speak highly enough about the staff and doctors at this location. I am not a fan of the road it is on nor the parking but there is also more parking in the back. I like that they are walk in and first come first serve. Obviously emergencies are priority. If you're looking for a good vet, you've found it here. read more

My cat paced and cried and yowled before using the litterbox, which is abnormal. My normal vet could not see us (they were fully booked) and advised I find a clinic who could see him ASAP to rule out a blockage. Dr. Heilbron was able to see us immediately. Although I felt bad having to send my cat in by himself (due to necessary COVID-19 precautions), the vet and staff kept me reassured and updated via phone throughout the visit, and were upfront about costs before the exam and treatment. Dr. Heilbron diagnosed the problem right away, and patiently answered my many questions. Today, my cat is using the litterbox without any indication of discomfort - no pacing, howling, or crying! I am so thankful to Academy Animal Hospital and their staff for being affordable, being able to see me at a moment's notice, for their thorough communication and reassurance, and most importantly, for making my cat happy and healthy again! I am so relieved knowing he is no longer in pain and no longer unwell. read more

I usually have good experiences here. I arrived and was given a number to call to schedule an appointment. I made 10+ calls and not a single time was the phone picked up. After about 45 minutes, I decided to leave and look for another vet. They were definitely busy, and I think too busy to take me and my cats health into consideration. I wish there was a way of scheduling appointments. The conditions outside are too dangerous to wait as it is 90+ degrees F and there are multiple cars idling with exhaust blowing. read more

I am a huge helicopter mom when it comes to my golden retriever, Riley, and I can always count on Dr. Lewis and Dr. Heilbron to not only provide the best care for Riley but they explain everything to me that is going on so I can be a better advocate for my pet. The front desk staff are all so nice and helpful, Riley can be a bit difficult when it comes to actually getting into the front door for his visit and they always happily help me scoot him in. Dr. Lewis is what I consider and old school vet (the best kind), he gets to know each of his clients and doesn't order a bunch of crazy expensive tests just to figure out what he already knows from his many years of experience and he is gentle, patient and kind, with both animals and their sometimes neurotic parents. I have never felt rushed or unheard, they take as much time as needed and are there long after you have left the office. I can't say enough nice things about the doctors and staff at this practice, I highly recommend. read more

I adopted a Shih-Poo on a late Friday evening. Uncertain of his health, I took him to AAH Saturday afternoon after having him groomed Saturday morning at a different facility. I live in Howard County, and the only walk-in clinic that I could find that actually answered the phone on a Saturday morning was AAH. The doctor was very friendly. I was able to get a check-up and shots for my puppy with a very short wait. AAH seemed very well organized. The Dr. suggested a shampoo for my puppy that I purchased. After researching how often I could bathe my puppy, I found that he could be bathed as often as desired if I used a soap-free shampoo. Luckily, I had purchased the recommended shampoo from the Dr. and I had soap-free shampoo on hand. I got a heart worm and flea-tick treatment chewables to give to my puppy at home. Overall, it was a great facility. This is my first dog and the Dr. made me feel very comfortable with my adopted puppy. read more

I don't know if it was an off day for the groomer, but we had the worst experience ever. Our Cavachon was pretty matted so we were advised to go where there was a vet on duty in case he needed to be sedated. He came home quite nicked and weirdly uneven...his muzzle was shaved so short (and uneven), it was scraped and raw on one side. I had to bathe him again as he wouldn't stop scratching himself and massage him with olive oil and a bit of bendryl. I can accept that anyone can have a bad reaction to a new product, but not the cuts and overall terrible grooming. I hope this was highly unusual because of the great reputation of Dr Lewis and the clinic. read more

I'm not a yelper, but THIS PLACE IS NEGLIGENT. My pet was in severely bad shape and was sent home, with a shot to help rehydrate him. They were closing and could not give him an IV, but I should have been directed somewhere else and instead was sent home. My baby of eleven years is dead, because it is more important for businesses to make money and keep potential customers than care for your pets. I was largely ignored the entire time I was there, and the doctor wouldn't let me be with my baby when he was hurting.I should have known before I arrived that this place was uncaring and unprofessional, because I was put on hold for 8 minutes after which I called back, in tears, for some desk lady to say casually, oh, I'm sorry. DO NOT BRING YOUR BABIES HERE. If I had gone to somewhere better in the first place, he might have been saved. They didn't even call me with the results of the blood tests we were waiting on, and they are making me pay for results that I got in 15 minutes at the second place I went to. Honestly I wouldn't take my dogs anyplace else. They get all their check ups at Academy Animal Hospital, they are boarded there often as I travel, they seem to LOVE going there, and the people that work there are so sweet to them. Such caring people. Dr Lewis performed an ACL surgery on my dog, and compared to other options at other places, it was SO much more affordable and the recovery time was faster than what the other places said it would be (I didn't realize he did the surgery, which was why I looked to other vets). A++, Do Not hesitate to use them as your primary vet. I cannot say enough about this place! I don't grade on location, I don't care, it's the quality of the service, the people, and how comfortable my dogs are going there and staying there for 5-7 days at a time. :) read more

My cat had been vomiting for 3 days at least twice a day. I thought it was a hairball but didn't see any. I tried everything to get him well but had no luck. I called my regular vet and they were booked up. They referred me to this awful place. Due to the problem with Coronavirus I wasn't allowed inside which I did understand. After about 45 minutes they took my cat back. In a short time the doctor called with questions and told me the blood work would be $330 which I did gripe about but knew it was necessary. She called back to say he wasn't corporating and they would need to sedate him which they couldn't do since they were about to close. The other vet has taken blood from this cat several times with no problems. Why they couldn't do it amazes me. They had huge dogs going in and out and they were unable to get blood from a 16 lb cat. I most sure he wasn't the only angry cat that they've ever had. I gave a different cat insulin twice a day for 5 years. She suggested I take him to the ER on Cromwell bridge. In summary, she showed no empathy in the tone of her voice. I think since I wasn't a regular customer and they were about to close she just didn't want to deal with it. I intend to let my regular vet know not to recommend this place. My advice is to look elsewhere. read more

If I could leave zero stars I would! The office staff behind the front desk has the WORST attitude that I have ever seen. They act like they don't want to be there, they act like how DARE you come in with your pet because now THEY have to do some work. They talk to you like you are stupid, they roll their eyes and they heavy sigh at you while doing their job. Are you kidding me? The thought of ever walking back into that place again makes me cringe. Due to their horrible disinterested attitude towards people I can hardly imagine how they treat the animals. I literally hate this place and I would never ever recommend anyone to ever take their pets there if they value their pets life and well being. I had to go there because I was adopting a pet through a rescue and they took care of the routine vet care until my pet was adopted. I was there approximately 6 times in 3 months. I know people have a bad day but not every single time I walk in the door. I am a very happy upbeat person, I always smile and say, "Good morning how are you this morning?" I was always met with, "Ok, why are you here?" If you value your own sanity and the treatment of your pet, do yourself and your pet a huge favor and do not take them to this vet. read more

We brought my previous dog here for the vet care during his last year with us, and we brought him here to let him go peacefully and without any more pain when the time came. The doctors and staff have been nothing less than wonderful to my wife and I and Bigwig, who we miss terribly every single day. We have been bringing our new puppy to them since day 1 with him and either tomorrow or Monday we will be bringing him in to be neutered! I have been taking my pets to Academy for years and have always been very satisfied with their vet and customer service. Dr. Lewis is AWESOME, and only orders or prescribes what my pets need at that time. He always tries option A, B & C before going to D which usually means costly bills. He is very genuine and compassionate and clearly cares for animals! The staff is wonderful as well and we have established one on one relationships with some of the girls that work up front. WE LOVE YOU JOAN! Couldn't ask for a more friendly and helpful atmosphere. The only drawback I have, which seems to be the same complaint as others is the location and parking situation. For as busy as they seem to be on a daily basis, it just seems logical to find a more suitable location that can accommodate their clients a little better. Although, that may mean them moving to a location further away, which may not be convenient for me or the community. Other than that, I highly recommend Academy Hospital!!!!! read more
