I *love* it when people show up at the time they said they were going to show up! I called these guys yesterday to have them come out and fix my garage door opener (after another company failed to show up...grr). Academy said they could be here between 9 am and 1 pm and -- hey! cool! -- they guy was here at 9:15. He was courteous, wore a jacket with the company's name on it so he didn't look like some fly-by-night operator, and had a truck equipped with all the parts necessary to fix the door. The price was reasonable, too. If I ever need garage door opener repair or replacement again, I'd call Academy first thing. I called Academy on a Monday morning about a double-wide garage door that was about to self-destruct from jamming. Cindy was courteous and friendly, and she scheduled me for a service call later that same morning. Within a couple of hours, Al was at my door. He quickly identified the problem and the very affordable fix. In addition to replacing a couple of pulleys, he also installed safety cables in both extension springs. He inspected the whole door assembly and lubricated all of the rollers. In an hour everything was working smoothly, for a long time to come, I'm sure. I purchased a lift master 8550 it is suppose to come 2 springs and 2 cables, they charged me 130.00 for the springs and 160.00 cables, and did not give a new key pad. so aim not happy at all. So refund my usd 290.00 i will write a better review and install my key pad. Thank you. read more

Academy Door exceeded our expectations. Our garage "situation" was a bit complicated; we needed to widen the opening to buy us a few inches to accommodate a new, larger car that had fit with difficulty through the old garage doors. First, Dave gave us a thorough explanation of work involved and a detailed estimate. Basically, we needed to have some wood removed and PVC siding replaced and still match original colors. Dave even dropped off a sample for me to use with the PVC folks. Jorge then came out and spent most of the day installing the new doors. He was exceptional - friendly and dedicated to doing the job right on one of the hottest days of the summer! Jorge knew exactly what he was doing. He has tons of experience from doing this for so long, and you can tell that he really enjoys what he does. He put in two fabulous new doors (!) and expertly explained how our new garage door system works. He was very patient, knowledgable, and professional. And, we love our new garage doors! They are so much quieter, more efficient due to thicker insulation, include a backup battery to deal with power outages, and come with nice options like keypad and motion detector lights. Horrible, horrible company. They came to our house about a year ago to re-fix the job that they did poorly the first time. It was done so badly that the springs came flying off causing the door to suddenly fall shut from above, nearly killing or maiming my kid that was standing in the path of it 1 second earlier. The guy who came out to fix it was abusive and weirdly insulting and vaguely threatening. He re-did the job then tried to charge me to repair his bad work. I refused, I spoke to the company--but never had it resolved really. read more

I needed to replace the garage doors and was very happy going with Academy. They came for an estimate the next day. John explained the differences in the doors versus the insulation rating. Academy turned out to be cheaper than some others that we got and only a little more than the big box retailers. Installation day and Jorge came - he had everything done in about 6 hours (2 doors, 2 motors, and all new hardware etc). The doors are so much better than we had. I had to call 2 days later for squeeking which didn't sound right but they had a technician out to my house a couple hours later (same day service) who had to lubericate everything and check the torsion spring. Academy Door & Control (Chantilly, VA) installed a garage door opener and springs for me on 4/16/19. Academy didn't ask what I wanted. I trusted the company. BIG MISTAKE! They installed a new AccessMaster Contractor Series Wi-Fi garage door opener. NEVER LET A CONTRACTOR INSTALL THIS unless you don't mind an opener that shudders and clatters each time it is used. The support bar bends and shakes with each activation. It works but I have never had an opener in the last 30 years that I hated more! It doesn't have a lock button. You have to unplug it! Academy charged $519 for the unit. I can't find a price for it anywhere on the web. I am an unhappy customer. read more

I called them this morning at 8:00 am and they were here at about 10:00. The chain drive gear was worn down and Jared had it replaced and adjusted in about 1/2 an hour. Also adjusted one of the tension springs, lubricated the rollers, hinges, and trolley track, and mounted the switch to the wall. Done by 10:45. Very thorough and professional service, great quick response, I would not hesitate to recommend them. read more

First, I requested a service call for a new garage door system and was assured by the tech who came that I only needed a repair (to the tune of $147). This repair lasted all of two weeks. Then, I made arrangements to have a new system installed (what I asked for in the first place!) but when the tech showed up, I realized that I was misled on the phone regarding the price for the new system. Finally, when I called to try and resolve the misunderstanding and asked for a credit for the so-called previous repair, I was denied. They may be knowledgeable and capable, but their customer service is unacceptable. read more

Academy was great. quoted me over the phone (wasn't cheap but not their fault). The door manufacturer Wayne Dalton (who I would give a 1/2 star) discontinued the patented spring system. The guy came out and said it was a 30 minute retrofit. Actually took 40 but great gravy it was 11 degrees out. He lubed the door and opener and the 2nd door and was done. Extremely efficient. Poor first impression. Poor customer service. I went out to the showroom on Saturday to buy a new garage door and flooring. I was asked to wait for a salesman to assist me, and the receptionist went and told him that he had a customer. I waited while I heard him on the phone going on about golf in the next room. after about 10 minutes listening to him on the phone, I left. I can only assume his lack of customer service is indicative of the company's overall philosophy towards their customers, so I will purchase my door and flooring elsewhere. read more

My garage door broke yesterday. They were here the next day, on time and fixed the motor in minutes. Cost $109 for the service call and $68 for the part. I had a very good experience doing business with Academy!!! Harry & John the sales guys were nice to work with. They let me change the inserts design a day before installation, although it was not in stock they came within a week to install the new inserts for no additional cost. Recently bought a house in Centreville, and for the first time in my life, had a garage!! Only problem is that I had a terrible time with the openers. One would constantly 'forget' that my truck remote was supposed to open it, as well as the keypad. Very inconsistent, and frustrating. The other one worked fine, but only with the factory provided remote. It wouldn't ever sync with anything else. Keypad or my truck's HomeLink. I called a few places, and finally found someone who took the time to actually LISTEN to the problem, and work with me on finding out some things about the units. Turns out, they were original equipment and 25 years old. Not surprised they were having issues after that much time. Jodi was the person that worked with me, and after finding out what my needs were, she suggested a pair of LiftMaster 8550W openers. Check the reviews on these, they are top-of-the-line and highly rated. I was actually surprised the price wasn't outrageous, so we set up the appointment. On the day of the appointment, just as I was told, I was contacted when the tech was on his way to my house. I had a early afternoon appointment, and they were right on time! Something rare these days with most service organizations. William came out, and got set up and went to work. Along the way, he pointed out that one of my springs was worn and may possibly break soon. He had a spare on the truck, so that was replaced as well. Installation was done in the time promised, and let me tell you, this was a GREAT installation with attention to detail. Wires were run in nice straight lines, and tacked to the wall/ceiling well. Clean, and thorough! William helped me set up the remotes, keypad, and the HomeLink in my truck. I've NEVER had such a positive experience with ANY service company in my entire life. These guys are Grade-A professionals! I hope I don't have a need for their services again any time soon, but I will refer them to anyone who needs any garage door/opener work!! read more

Top drawer service from Academy Door. Mario is the garage door whisperer. Our door mysteriously would just stop working. Everything in the Chamberlain lift checked out but Mario stayed with it until he could get it to do it again during the service call. And it did, letting him know it was the circuit board. It's running perfectly now. Earlier this year the house shook when the spring broke and Academy was out to fix it within an hour. Prices are reasonable and service is without compare. read more

Went here looking for a part I couldn't find at any hardware store. Instead of typical "let me sell you something cuz your here", I got waited on by a friendly receptionist who seemingly extracted a manger from a meeting. He was fast and friendly as well and went on to school me on the fact the part I had would suffice and I Really didn't need to replace it. I called Academy Door at 5pm yesterday and they scheduled a service call for 9am - 1pm today. The service department was very friendly and professional and worked to accommodate my schedule. They gave me the price up front and the repair was exactly what they quoted. Harry showed up right on time this morning. There couldn't be a nicer and more knowledgeable person. He knows his stuff and spent extra time explaining exactly what he was going to do and what my options were. There was no pressure. Called for service on our garage door (would only open about 1/3 of the way), and was offered an appointment that evening. I could not make it, so scheduled for two days out. The day of the appointment, Academy's dispatcher called and asked if I could see the techs early. I was already home and said "sure." Technicians arrived about 10 minutes later. In 20 minutes, for $109 (their published flat rate, excluding parts), the garage door opener and spring were adjusted, and spring and tracks were lubed. Door opens now, almost silently. We have used Academy twice and had a pretty good experience overall. The first time was to fix a minor problem with our door a couple years ago. They came recommended by my father-in-law who also had a positive experience with them. The second and most recent time was when our opener stopped functioning properly. It was about 20 years old and at the end of its life anyway. Linwood and Mervin came out on short notice, accommodated our family's schedule, and installed a new opener on a Saturday morning. Reasonable prices, comprehensive walkthrough of the new opener, etc. All and all, we were pretty happy. Unfortunately, they had to come back two more times to address issues we were having with the opener. But, in fairness, the first time seemed to be a problem with the hardware, which periodically became non-responsive. Ok, they replaced the defective control pad and things seemed well. Then we noticed that our door was seeming to open on its own at random times. They again came out immediately. This time they were sure of the problem other than maybe we were on the same frequency as a neighbor. They reprogrammed the door and we have not had any problems since. All and all, they are a good, reliable, prompt, and fair company. We would definitely use them again. Linwood and Mervin did great work and I don't feel the issues we had were any fault of theirs, but I still feel obligated to hold back at least a half star for the defective pad and the uncertainty as to what was causing our door to mysteriously open. (And no, there were no kids playing around with openers.) Simply put... two thumbs up. read more

We moved into a home with a two car garage, but amazingly without a garage door opener. I have no idea how the previous residents got by without one for over two years. Then again, they didn't put up any window treatments either, but that's another story... Back to the garage. Their prices are reasonable, and we found a door that we liked and that we could get in the color (green) that our HOA requires. In addition, we were extremely impressed by the installers who came. They were courteous and clearly well trained, even meticulously adjusting the new door to the floor of our garage, making sure it sealed tightly. I've been an Academic Door customer for many years but after my most recent experience with Academic Door, I will never again use them. One of the two coil springs unwound due to the loosening of set screws. The Academic Door technician showed up and spent an hour or so trying to fix the door. He was unable to properly tighten the set screws and re-wind the springs and, in the process, he managed to damage one of the parts. He left after advising that the only way to fix the door was to replace the spring torsion system or better yet, that I buy a new door and left; of course, I could not use the door. I called Academy Door several times to explain what happened and solicit a proposed action plan. I was assured that they will respond shortly. After more than a week and more phone calls, I called one of their competitors who was able to repair the door for less than $100 without replacing the torsion system or the door. read more

My door essentially fell apart on me and was in a sorry state where I literally had to rig up a system to keep it from bending itself in a way it was not supposed to. He fixed the door so it closed but had to disconnect the automatic function. The door had no lock, he told me how to secure it. I will never use these people again. We needed to replace the weather stripping on the bottom of our garage door. It is a fair simple job and I decided to do it myself. Home Depot and Lowe's did not carry the style we needed so I decided to drop in academy and see if they had it. At first the people were nice and took the sample I brought to match what they had in the back. While I waited I noticed they will epoxy garage floors, which I was interested in having done. Their price? $10/square foot, around $4-5k for an average two car garage. Seemed high to me. For that price I ft like I could tile my garage floor. The guy came back with the weather stripping I needed. The receptionist produces my bill... $5/foot...$90 in total. Having done my research already I knew this was 4x the price it should have been. When I respectfully confronted the women and told her that their price was very high and that I could get it online for $1.30/ft her response was "are you going to take it or not?". Not "That can't be right, let me check with someone". Northern Virginia is filled to the gills with extremely overpriced contractors, please shop around and use the ones that aren't trying to get rich quick by inflating their prices. read more

I had first called up Sears to check out/repair my garage doors openers. They finally got back to me three days later. In the meantime, Academy scheduled the call for the next day, but then came out the same day I called because their technician had finished early. He cleaned both door systems and expertly repaired the broken cables - all for an extremely affordable price. I gave this company 5 stars because of the first time they really impressed me. However, things didn't go that well for the second time. This time is on Friday evening when a cable on one side of my garage door fell off the track, so I decided to call them as my first choice. The guy answered my call quickly, but gave me a quote of $350 because they want $200 extra to work during weekend, while my garage door could not be closed or opened! What the hell! Then I contacted another vendor and they came on the same day to fix it with only $100! So I decided that I would not use this vendor any more. read more
