My husband and I dropped our dog off (miniature dachshund, 9 months) along with my parents dogs (2 yorkshire terriers, 13 & 11 years) on June 30th. Our pickup was scheduled for July 7th. Aside from my father calling to schedule grooming for the 2 yorkies, we received no contact from anyone while our dogs were at Academy Kennels. When we picked up the 3 dogs on July 7th we were told that they had "some diarrhea" and that they were given some medicine for it. Obviously this information shocked us, considering no one had been in contact with us regarding their care. However, the dogs seemed fine at the time. Upon taking them home on the 7th all 3 dogs were not themselves, they were all very sleepy which may be expected from boarding. However, the night of the 7th the dogs began throwing up in addition to the diarrhea. My husband called Academy Kennels the morning of July 8th and asked for more information regarding their sickness and the medicine they were given. The owner stated that they called and left a voicemail but when they never heard back they decided to give all 3 dogs medicine anyways. When my husband asked which number they called, they listed one number and then stated that they might have called the second number as well. That is definitely something that they should have kept note of, and regardless, they should not have given our dogs the medicine without our consent. The owner kept trying to assure us that the dogs were just stressed and that's what caused them to have these symptoms. However, they also stated that the diarrhea for all 3 dogs did not begin until July 6th. While on the phone, we were told that all 3 dogs were given half a tablet of Loperamide. After speaking with the owner on the phone, we checked missed calls and voicemails of both phone numbers they had on record and they had never called or left any voicemails. We then did some research on the medicine that was given to our dogs, Loperamide. We quickly became aware that animals under 20 pounds (this applies to all 3 dogs) should be given Loperamide LIQUID, as the tablets can cause an overdose. I personally called and spoke with Donna, the owner, on July 10th. I explained that we never received any calls or voicemails and she said that she was the one who called so she must've dialed the wrong number. I then explained that the dogs should not have been given Loperamide in tablet form as per the facts when doing our research. Donna told me that's just what they normally do and they've been doing this for years. Donna then stated that if we ever wanted to bring the dogs in again to speak with her and she would give us a discount. I told her that would not be happening. She simply said she was sorry and that was the end of the call. As a business owner myself, I was very disappointed with how she handled this information. Needless to say, our dogs will not be returning to Academy Kennels. Their lack of organization, communication, and professionalism was like no other. When boarding your pets you should have peace of mind knowing they're in good hands. Instead, we made the mistake of leaving our pets with them and picked up sick, lethargic dogs. Do yourself a favor and find somewhere else to take your pets. read more

Took my dog into her groomed When I picked him up the groomer informed me that my dog had a nick the way she was holding him it didn't look like it was much but when I got home he became sick throwing up pooping all over the place gave him a bath and looked at the cut again and it was a Nick from clippers I called the kennel to let them know that my dog had been sick and that it was a clipper cut and the owner was listening in on the conversation that I was having with the attendant and she chimed in and wanted to know why I was taking pictures outside not how was my dog ? is the dog OK ?is there anything we can do ? No she want to know why I was taking pictures outside which had absolutely nothing to with her business I was actually taking a picture of a sign next-door from a business that sells trailers She has no customer skills Acted like I did something wrong what the heck I will not take my animal there ever again this is a new owner and she is absolutely horrible listening in on a conversation she should've made the phone call herself read more

I would not recommend Academy Kennels to board your animals. My dog was hurt twice on 2 different stays when she was there. The first time she popped a nail and the second time when I went to pick her up the technician had no clue as to why she was "favoring" as he said her paw. She was limping and couldn't walk on it. Only to call them the next day and they put the blame on my dog for "hitting the fence" when other dogs walked by. I had to take my dog to emergency vet due to the infection she got on her paw. I don't think they are supervising the pets and the lack thereof. We pay a decent amount of money to trust them with our animals and this is an unacceptable business to have confidence in. I will be contacting the BBB to report them. Please don't trust your animals here!!! read more

I would give this kennel a zero rating if could. My dog was there for two weeks, when I picked her up the owner quickly ushered her into the wash room saying my dog had gotten herself dirty. They gave me her bag of food that I had packed and she had 12 bags of food that she hadn't eaten. My dog was listless, sneezing and green snot was oozing out of her nose. We took her to the vet and she had lost 8 pounds! I called the kennel and asked why they hadn't called me and let know that she was not eating. They informed me that they had followed protocol and added cheese to her food and she had eaten. They made no attempt of any type of recourse and seemed rather defiant rather than remorseful. I brought my dog and cat here over Christmas, which is their busiest season. When I came to pick them up, they were both extremely skinny. I portioned out all of their food and when I came to pick them up, there were multiple portions of food left untouched. They also refused to send any pictures or video updates. They also demanded a tip when I came to pick up my pets, before I even saw them. I'm disappointed because a friend referred AK to me and I was hopeful. Great experience with boarding our babies at Academy Kennels. We have struggled to find the right fit since moving from Marietta, GA 2 years ago. We live in Cape Coral now so it's not the most convenient option but worth the extra drive. Donna, Evan and all staff we have come into contact with are very helpful and caring. We boarded our pup here for a week and were extremely happy with the care he was given. For a dollar a day we were able to add an extra playtime per day and they also cut his nails:). The cost was very reasonable and his belongings were all neatly folded and waiting for us when we picked him up. It was very apparent they spent quality time with our furry boy and gave him lots of love! The staff is nice enough, they took inventory of all of our dogs toys which was nice. But I got both of my dogs back with Kennel Cough, and one with a urinary tract infection. This tells me that they did not either 1. Give my dog enough water or 2. Let him outside enough. Also, when I walked into the building to pick our dogs up, all of their stuff was sitting out in the lobby. We didn't say when we would be picking them up so for all they knew we weren't coming until later. I thought that was weird. We picked them up at 2:00, one hour late and still got charged for a whole extra day. And no one told us anything about our dogs stay. They just took our payment, gave us our dogs and that was that. We don't kennel our dogs often, but next time it will not be here. read more

My family and I were vacationing in the area (Sanibel Island) and wanted to board our dog somewhere close by and we chose Academy Kennels based on their positive reviews. Our bulldog loved it! She had an indoor / outdoor run, so she could go outside whenever she needed to, they administered her daily medications, took great care of her, and did an awesome job on her bath before we picked her up. We were very pleased with the quality of care they provided for our baby and will definitely use them again if we travel back to Sanibel in the future. Really great staff. read more

My beagle stayed for 4 nights. Ended up having them bring her home. I live a few miles from the kennel and thought the charge was very reasonable. She was worn out when she came back- just as you would expect. Staff was friendly. She was allowed to have her bed and treats. Worked out really well for both of us. I've used a place over on Metro in the past, but never felt really comfortable with the free for all pack thing. Glad I found a new kennel. Felt that she was safe and well taken care of. read more

I am sad to write this review. My pets have stayed at Academy several times. They are usually happy to see me, and its a whirlwind picking them up. The first couple stays seemed alright. The price is less expensive than others. Last time they stayed my 1 year old aussie developed diarrhea and a fever within a day of being home. After an expensive vet trip and a bunch of medicine, I chalked it up to chance. About 1 week later my older Aussie developed labored, rapid breathing and a hacking phlemmy cough. After another expensive vet trip, my dog was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection that was on the verge of being pneumonia. I have worked in the veterinary field and understand this happens. About a week after that my other dog started coughing...more medicine...During this stay I asked that My 1 year old have behind her ears brushed out after their bath and was told they don't get brushed, just a quick wash off. Her hair is very fine and this causes matting when wet and not brushed right away. I took them back this weekend, this time made my own grooming appointment to avoid the dreaded ear matts. I picked them up at 0815. They smelled so bad i literally gagged. My youngest Aussie's leg hair was wet with urine and poop was all in her leg hair. ( like she was laying in it) . They were just handed off to me with the man saying they were just getting ready to let them out so they hadn't gone yet nor had they eaten. The woman behind the desk came out to me while i was walking them with a wet rag and towel to assist me. There was no"wiping them off" that was going to make any difference. I am so sad to think my kids were wallowing in urine and feces while I was gone. They did seem nice enough. I just didn't leave this time feeling that they were cared for. disappointed, and shopping around. read more

It is very rare for me to give a bad rating, however I had a bad experience from the moment I walked into Academy Kennels for a tour. I called and made a reservation for my 2 dogs for a 4 day weekend. I was advised I could tour before leaving my dogs and on Saturdays tours were 9:45am-11:45am and they close at Noon. I arrived at 11:30am, walked in the door and the two women behind the counter just stared at me. I wasn't greeted until I spoke. I literally got an eye roll and loud sigh - they didn't ask about my dogs, when they were staying, or offer anything helpful. I was very rudely advised that tours on Saturdays end at 11am and 'lucky for me' they got their chores done already so they would take me back. I have never experienced such a RUDE & UNPROFESSIONAL attitude from a business when I am about to pay for 4 days worth of services and be a repeat customer when I travel- not to mention I am pretty certain the lady with the worst attitude was actually the owner. The other lady who did my tour turned her attitude around and became helpful and answered what I needed. But it wasn't enough to fix the damage done. I just called and cancelled my reservations with them- I will be talking my puppies (and my money) to a more friendly place. read more

After a 12 day vacation I picked up my 8 1/2 pound Min Pin who had lost over a quarter of his body weight. and my 18 1/2 pound Dachshund who had also lost 2 and 1/2 pounds. At first the owner and her manager did not want to bring them out telling me they had not been bathed yet. I said I would take them anyway. I had told them before I left that I would be there to pick them up when they opened on Monday morning since we would be arriving home on a Sunday and they are not open to release the pets on Sunday. I also bathed them before leaving them at the Kennel and I have never witnessed them smelling so terrible as when they were picked up. Even though we normally only bathe them twice a month. I left bedding and blankets for them and their raised Wicker dog bed since they usually cover themselves in the blankets and on the morning I picked them up the dogs were without their bedding the night before as it was sitting in the lobby. I will never again use this Kennel and I will be inspecting any future place that I leave my dogs before leaving them. I can only Imagine what went on for the 12 days that was not so obvious when I picked up my pets. Having one lose more than a quarter of his body weight is inexcusable. When I tried to talk to Kerry the owner she would not shut her babbling mouth full of excuses long enough for me to finish telling her that which I had proof of about her negligent care. The only reason this service gets one star from me is that I can not leave ZERO Stars. Be sure to thoroughly inspect every part of any place you plan to leave your pets and my nose should have told me that this stinking place was to be avoided. Also They do not take checks. Kerry told me that she had long time good customers who had paid with checks before and bounced them and never returned. Now I can see why. I wanted to add a photo of my Min Pin with his new bony little body after less than two weeks but Yelp does not allow it on the review so I will try to add it to the gallery for this business. read more

First time boarding here and definitely the last. Had a gut feeling when we walked in that I shouldn't of left her there. Our dog stayed Friday - Monday and when we picked her up all of her things were sitting in the waiting room and bedding was still wet from being washed. Bedding had been washed which lead me to believe she might of gone to the bathroom on it because she wasn't walked enough. She never had accidents at our last kennel or at home.. When I was letting her I found a tick on her so I did a thorough inspection and found a few more on her. She is on flea/tick control but my vet informed me it's not a deterrent. I don't believe they walked my dog even though I paid for "Extra playtime" and I feel they do not treat their grounds with any flea/tick treatments based in all the ticks I found in her. My husband and myself have 3 large dogs and we used academy kennels twice. Worst mistake ever. First one of my females came back with a nasty infected foot. I brought her to the vet as soon as I picked my dogs up.The owner was not only rude, but acted as if she had no idea my dog not only couldn't put weight on her foot, she was whining in pain . Next they don't stick to their hours, we called to make sure we were there to drop the dogs off as soon as they opened, one problem... When they finally opened everyone and their dogs rushed in to drop their dogs off and the owner literally told us we had to wait outside. And she was not a peach about telling us she would "get to us when she got to us". We had an emergency in ny about a month later and academy kennels was the only kennel with openings last minute. And once we picked up out dogs, yet again a different one of my dogs came home with a horrible cough and a puncture wound. IF YOU CONSIDER YOUR DOGS YOUR BABIES DONT USE ACADEMY KENNELS- we now use best friends animal hospital which has boarding and grooming- only the best for my babies read more
