By the way, once you book the classes online for the AMOS Riding Academy, Mae sends you a personalized video intro of what to expect including what gear to get and what classes might be like (she's not one of the teachers but is very helpful and knowledgeable on any questions you might have about the classes). Then she'll schedule a quick 5-10 min practice session on an H-G Street 500 that's bolted down and on dyna rollers so you can get acquainted with the controls, upshifting and downshifting. Our in-the-field instructors were Adam and Andrew... Andrew has such a positive energy and gets you really excited about learning. Horrible! I cleared my schedule for this course. A few hours before class was set to begin (on Zoom), I realized I didn't have the zoom link. I messaged the instructor, who told me to retrieve the link from the Chat Bot on their website. The chatbot provided a broken link and the instructor didn't know what the problem was. Long story short, I couldn't get in, they removed me for the class, and when I asked to be re-enrolled in a future class (duh), they refused. They said my only option is stand-by, which is ridiculous. I disputed the charge with my bank. They fought it. It took me 5 months to get my money back, but I finally did. These guys have no integrity. Stay away! read more

This motorcycle academy is great place to learn how to ride a motorcycle. I had no experience with riding before I took this class and I learned the basics of riding safely after taking the beginner course. The staff here are very knowledgeable and patient with every rider and they are the reason why this academy stands out. I had Vincent and Corey as my inclass instructors and they were both awesome in keeping the 3 hour class interesting and making the students understand all the safety rules and skills you will need to know as a beginner rider. I had Anthony and Lauren who were my riding range instructors and they were awesome too. They teach you how to ride a motorcycle safely while making you feel comfortable as possible. Very happy with the school. Vincent led our theory classes and was very descriptive, highlighting the more important aspects and making sure that we actually understood they "why" behind all the ideas and were not simply forced to memorize. G and Nemo were great on the range, taking their time to ease us into our first steps (for most of us it was the first time on a bike) while also moving things at a perfect pace - not rushing and making sure we have adequate time to practice the bits but also not moving slow enough for us to get bored. I don't know how they orchestrated the whole thing so well but I guess it comes with practice on their end and genuinely caring and wanting to teach us how to ride safely. The honest feedback was also appreciated. Personally I went from never being on a motorcycle and feeling awkward just trying to balance it on its place to feeling comfortable enough to continue practicing on my own and eventually getting out on the streets, all in just a couple of days. 100% recommend for riders with ZERO experience. Motorcycles were not nearly as simple as I thought and the instruction and practice with AMO was very comprehensive and thorough. The drills were all great for learning and all felt very safe even in the rain. The beater bikes provided were good for the purposes of this training. Bike #41 would not go into neutral unless you were moving so maybe avoid that one. The classroom session was good and convenient. The information was valuable. I would say death-by-PowerPoint but the presenters were actually pretty engaging and very knowledgeable/experienced. The range sessions were run by G, Anthony, and Nemo. Anthony was amazing. He gave great instruction and feedback for all of the drills. He has a good understanding of what struggles new riders have and provided expert guidance for novices. The MTC exceeded my expectations by a mile! Ryan, my classroom instructor, went above and beyond repeating the student handbook by using examples from his own experience, which made the information really accessible, and sharing his deep knowledge via clear, detailed answers to a range of questions about bikes, specific situations encountered on the road, etc. I liked the pace Ryan struck in the class--he moved fast enough to always be engaging but never overwhelming. On the riding range, Anthony and Karima both found time to provide lots of personalized feedback. They made our time on the range fun, and I left each day of instruction feeling confident that I had genuinely made some progress developing useful skills and well-informed judgment thanks to their guidance. Academy of Motorcycle Operation is the best MSF course out there. The staff is absolutely helpful, positive and direct. Anthony is very uplifting and makes the online course very informative while catering to students' questions. "G" and "Nemo" are like the Lethal Weapon of instructors. G is like your Riggs, a bit out there, fun, positive, but gets the job done when the time comes. Nemo seemed like Murtaugh, very stern, direct, this isn't play time, but incredibly professional. They are like the perfect pairing of characters, an introvert and extravert training students on basic riding skills while trying not to sigh every minute for 5 hours. I do not have their patience. They are both very gifted and talented. I just wish I could hear their stories of them bad mouthing us to their friends on how God awful we were started off. The John Muir location has plenty of street parking, a designated area for riding, and rotating shade from the handball courts between 12PM and 5PM for shaded breaks. Paid for a class Jan 19th, about 2 weeks after the fires in Altadena were done. AMO had full availability to sign up for classes, so I assumed they knew that the class location would be ready to use for the class. On the 22nd, AMO emailed to let people know that the upcoming weekend class would be cancelled until further notice. I've been emailing and calling for a refund since then--no reply/update. They emailed about a week after the cancellation making a vague reference to being able to "get into a class at a later date" on March 1st or after. Still no response about a refund. A woman I was able to get ahold of via phone said "we aren't doing refunds". I understand that there have to be reasons to avoid a refund when there are unforeseen circumstances (rain, etc), but this is different. I signed up for a class on a specific date that I was available to do it. After researching on my own, I realized that it should have been extremely obvious that the school in Altadena was still closed off by the city. AMO should have known this. Whether it was lazy ignorance, or they KNEW and decided to amass fees that they knew they would deny refunding, either scenario is negligent. The idea that they should be able to sit on my $425 with no concrete plan to reschedule something in a reasonable time frame is ridiculous. They couldn't deliver. Luckily I paid via AMEX so they were able to reverse the charge the same day (today) that I disputed the transaction. Do this class somewhere that is incentivized to care about you as a customer, like HD. AMO is unprofessional. read more

The gear requirements are up to whichever teenager they got that that day to teach the course. 1000% recommend!! I had zero experience on a motorcycle.. didn't even know where the clutch was kind of bad. I took the AMO beginner course and learned so much! Pros: -helmet/gloves provided -Fantastic online and in person instructors (patient, funny, knowledgeable). Shout out to Karima, Danny, Sonny, and Vincent!! - really focuses on safety - easy bikes to learn on (kawasaki eliminator 125) - can be for anyone with literally zero experience - only riding during morning or nights (it can get really hot in full gear midday) - as a student, I felt supported through the entire process - CHP endorsed and monitored - passing means certificate for the driving portion of the DMV test Cons: - loooong days. You get breaks, but it's a mentally tiring process for two days - a tad expensive, but they offer a lot of loaner gear to save you money in case you're unsure I took the Monterey park class, with on site instructors Danny and Karima. They were absolutely amazing! Clear instructions, extremely patient, super helpful, and would have funny remarks throughout the class. The driving portion was LONG. 5 hours each day for two days. But they give plenty of breaks and are very understanding. The online courses were also long. Three hours each session, two sessions over two days. SUPER informative. You're given all the material you need. I had Zoom classes where the camera had to be on. My husband and I took the course together and we were able to share one computer which I appreciated. The course includes a driving test and a written test. I was terrified for both, but AMO truly prepares you for it. If you don't pass the first time on either one, you can retake it again for free. If you don't pass the 2nd one, I think it's $25 for the 3rd retake. My entire class was able to pass both the driving and written. The course itself was a tad expensive ($350 for anyone 21+ older). But you truly get what you pay for, and it was worth it. There's no substitute for safety, especially in such a risky vehicle. Overall, i recommend this to anybody who's curious about motorcycles or knows they want a motorcycle. Once you pass both tests, you'll get a certificate to prove to the DMV you passed, and that waives your driving test requirement. And even if you pass, you don't NEED to get your license. This is a great way for those on the fence to truly see if this is what you want (much cheaper than buying a bike). Don't worry about looking like an idiot if you're totally new to this, everyone is understanding and truly cares about your safety. read more

This review is late. I took the MSF course back in Nov 2020 but in reflecting where I was back then to where I am at now? I decided to post a review on my experience with this training company. First off, I had only basic knowledge on how to operate a motorcycle but no riding experience. I attended the two day course. The online training went seemingly. The first day, going over the basic controls, clutch, brakes, gear changing...ect, made sense to me. I was able to pick up on riding pretty quickly. However, when it came down to the testing? I was not doing too well. I did not pass the course. I struggled with riding the motorcycle at slow speeds. Even after returning to do the test a second time. I failed miserably! I was extremely saddened that I didn't pass. I decided not to continue pursuing the MSF course and opted to practice for the DMV test instead. I had already purchased a Harley Davidson Iron 883 at the time I took the course. 4 months after failing the MSF course, I purchased a bigger Harley Davidson. It was with this bike that I practiced the keyhole test there at the DMV. I went on youtube and studied those who provided videos on how to pass the test. I also came across a retired motorcycle officer named Robert Simmons who teaches people how to operate a motorcycle at slow speeds. His instruction made everything click for me. All of a sudden I was becoming a real champ at riding a motorcycle. I practiced the keyhole for 5 months before taking the test at the DMV. I passed my riding test on the first try. Thanks to Robert Simmons. So why post a review on here if Robert is the real Jedi Master of motorcycle operation? Well, AMO gave me the initial knowledge that I needed to properly operate a motorcycle. AMO taught me how to ride and they deserve recognition for that. I've given Robert Simmons alot of praise too because he sealed the deal for me. I currently have an even bigger Harley Davidson, a bagger and I can ride that with full confidence, even at slow speeds. I don't know whether I will sign up for another MSF class, but if I do, I can go in with alot more knowledge and I will be better prepared for the training provided. I am pretty comfortable riding at highway speeds and splitting lanes now on my brand new R3, and I really appreciate AMO's help in bringing me along my first steps. Vincent was very straight to the point, which I appreciated and took the time to treat us as if we were in the classroom. Absolutely loved Ryan and Karima. Both are super chill, down to earth, and clear (not that Vincent isn't ). Karima provided life experience and lessons to apply outside the range. Laura and Jacob were so encouraging! My bone to pick was with admin. Though Evan was extremely helpful, they should update their registration form. I had to postpone my riding class due to a mishap at the Glendale range. I felt like I would have to be bouncing around until finding a stand-by spot. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CLASS! Besides this being an introductory course and a FUN course, you also get a waiver to take the DMV written test to get your M1 license IF you pass the class exams . If you're paying attention and practicing in class, you should be fine. Truly a beginner course. I took the Pasadena, 2 day weekend course with a course of 6 students. Teachers were Karima and John. Class: The classroom training was very informative and it's vital to focus on the stats and speed zones for the test! Most of the exam questions are usually covered in the class by the instructor so just pay attention and answer the review questions towards the end of each lesson. They also allow retakes and you can see what you got wrong on the test to know what was wrong. 50 multiple questions, no more than 10 wrong answers. Field: The field training was pretty fun - especially for me as a beginner. I got to learn and use all the different controls - throttle, clutch, brakes, gears and it was really enjoyable once I got the hang of it. There's definitely an adrenaline feeling when speeding up on the tracks. Basics aside, the instructor will show you how to drive straight ahead, slow down, swerve, turns, and use your eyes to look. I was the "dumb" student and had the toughest time in the riding course, so if I made it then so can you! Everything was difficult for me but what really helped with was the coach's instructions. Every time I did something wrong, he would correct and advise how/what to do. Everyone else in the class was also very helpful and gave me really great advice when starting the vehicle and how to maneuver especially when there were a few pro riders in the beginner course. Throughout the entire course, I think the hardest part was just staying in the friction zone because my vehicle would stall a lot (it was a cruiser/eliminator). My instructor traded out an older bike for me because I was too short for the bike! Some of the students said my bike was older so it's a little finnicky and whenever I stopped, I would hold onto the clutch and not seconds later, it would just stall out so that was a little frustrating but after a couple tries, I slowly got the hang of it by holding onto the throttle ever so slightly. Practice is key - and learning what went wrong to apply to the next practice really helps. read more

4.5 stars Learning how to ride a motorcycle has been on my bucket list since I was a kid, but I never got around to it because of the fear of getting into a serious accident. It was and still is a very good reason to never touch a motorcycle. BUT I figured, if I never try, I'll never know if this is something worth learning/doing. And I'm here to tell you that I absolutely enjoyed every second of what I learned! Their courses are either 2-day or 3-day courses. My friend and I went with a weekend 2-day course...and, honestly, it was tough. The online classes started early - 7am on the first day and 6:30am on the second day. It lasted for about 3 hours each day. The most physically challenging was actually riding the motorcycles in 90 degree weather for approximately 4 hours each day with a written and driving test on the second day. Now, as someone who has never been on a motorcycle before, these machines were really heavy for me and the clutch and the brake were really hard to squeeze. At 5'2", I was kinda on tiptoes on these Kawasaki motorcycles that were considered small and light by my instructors. The first day was the toughest for me. Everytime I went in to squeeze the clutch to change gears, brake, then stop, I would tilt to the left and drop my bike. Yes, I dropped it. I dropped it 3 times. I wasn't injured, but they're definitely really heavy to lift to an upright position. An instructor helped me each time, but I genuinely don't think I could lift it on my own. In the heat, I got tired quickly and, by the end of the day, my hands and left arm hurt like crazy. I learned that I have no upper body strength... The second day went way better even though my arm and leg muscles were sore. I was still kind of struggling to change gears quickly, but, no matter how slow I was to change it, I accomplished it without dropping the bike. And for the rest of the day, I didn't drop the bike during any of the exercises. Some of the exercises included weaving around cones, turning in tight corners, and quick stops. I enjoyed the challenges more than I thought I would. And the heat wasn't really a concern anymore. I took the test with the rest of my class and passed! Both my hands and forearms were pretty dead...As a matter of fact, I had difficulty turning my car key when it was in the ignition and I haven't been able to use chopsticks for food for the last 2 days...but, hey, WORTH IT! My experience with this company has been better than positive! My instructors, Karima and Sheryle, gave amazing advice, corrections, and were encouraging. As someone who has never been on a motorcycle before, this was a great first time! The feedback at the end of the test was also very helpful because I know what I need more practice on on top more practice. I think the only thing I wished this company could improve on is including a third (purely) riding class to practice the tight weaves, tight corners, and gear shifting. One additional improvement could be the size of the lot they use. I went to the John Muir location and thought it was too small to really be able to shift into third gear, which was in one of our exercises... But, other than that, wonderful learning experience. If you're thinking about taking a class, I say go for it! AMO lets you borrow helmets, gloves, and boots if you're iffy about motorcyling and don't really want to invest in any equipment yet. Sizes are limited and first come, first serve. And if you're shorter than 5'2", you'll probably struggle on the bike they provide in terms of height, fingers to clutch/brake ratio, and even just reaching for the turn signals. read more

Took the two day course over the weekend and it was great! Sheryl was one of the instructors and she was amazing! Very informative and instructional! I have very little patience with things and I felt that it wasn't boring at all. The course consists of basic training, learning how to ride a motorcycle, safety instructions and a few different situationals. Seriously, don't be intimidated by this type of class, with the way they teach the course, a baby could learn how to ride. I signed up for the beginner's course because I eventually would like to own a scooter. At first I was a little nervous about riding for the first time, but the instructors really made it easy to learn and show you the ropes. By far, they are the best thing about taking the course. For the online class I had Laura and for the riding range I had both Jacob and G. Laura was excellent and very clear and so the online class was very smooth. At the most if you take notes to help digest the information you shouldn't have any issues with the written test. On the range, Jacob and G were very patient and knew how to communicate the techniques and feedback I needed to get better. If you make mistakes or you're not doing something quite right, they'll help you improve. They really are a treasure trove of knowledge, simply amazing people. On top of all that it's really cool to see who else signed up for the class, it's a really wide range of people and you'll enjoy meeting some of them. While I passed the course, the learning really doesn't stop here. I'll definitely be taking the intermediate course when the time is right and hope I can see them both again! read more

It had been a long time since I had been on a motorcycle so I took the MSF course. The course taught me a lot. They were patient with my wife who has never been on a motorcycle. Danny and Karima were solid teachers and gave me a lot of useful pointers. I now know that I have to work on my clutch control, low speed maneuvers, and my weaving. My wife has to work on learning how to stop. The class can be a little tiring but I appreciate all the riding time we managed to get in. I now have the confidence to buy and ride a motorcycle. I know it's a dangerous activity but after taking this course I feel significantly safer. I successfully got my motorcycle endorsement last week from the DMV. At no fault of the instructors, they were really nice and tried to help me the best they could but i was struggling with getting comfortable on the bike my first time in the riding portion. This review is basically on what i thought was a easy process to do standby or get into a another riding portion of the class which is nearly impossible. So I passed the classroom part but during the riding portion, i had struggle to balance and was lagging behind the course (given i never rode a bike before). The instructors suggested i self drop and to come back as a stand by another day to retake it at no additional cost when i was comfortable within 60 days. I tried to do this a couple of times and each time, i could not get in as a standby. I emailed a couple of times of how i could better my chances getting into as a standby and was basically just told it depends but i have to do it within 60 days or pay again. I wouldnt have self-drop the first time to not lag the class behind if i knew the stand by policy was not to help in my favor for me to retake the class but possibly make me pay again. I just completed the course and the instructors were great. It was "G" and Nemo the first day and Karima and Nemo the second day. All the instructors were competent and patient and knowledgeable. I wanted to take this course to help get my M1 license and gain new skills. I did pick up some new techniques which I appreciate. The course was only 2 days with a combination of zoom instructions and riding time. Highly recommended for anyone new to riding. These skills will keep you alive. read more

I completed this course this past weekend, and passed both the written evaluation and the riding skills test. It is a grueling 2 days (did the afternoon weekend session at John Muir HA in Pasadena) starting May 6:30/7 am online for class, and riding from 11:30 until 4:30/5. But all three instructors at the range site were fantastic (Finn, Laura, Anthony), supportive, and encouraging. I have some dirt bike riding experience, but there were a few in my class that never had been in a bike and passed because the instruction was that good. I will say, you need have really good balance on 2 wheels, so if you are an avid bicycle rider that does help. Highly recommend. Horrible experience, especially with the Altadena instructor, Sheryl. Inpatient and rude. Unhelpful as can be and although I didn't want her to hold my hand during the training, I could not believe her unprofessional and demeaning comments in front of the class! I filed a complaint and the person I spoke with admitted that Sheryl can be really bad, yet there was never a follow-up or an attempt to offer a refund. Don't waste your money or your time with this place. And Sheryl, buy yourself some professionalism and drop the attitude. read more

These guys literally have saved my life. The streets are full of people who do not know how to drive ( or ride ). Cheryl ( hope I spelled that right ), Francesca , and Vincent not only taught me how to ride but also how not to let some idiot take me out . I graduated knowing my weak points and that you never stop practicing , learning , and perfecting that muscle memory. I signed up for the Motorcycle safety course for 12/31/22 and 1/1/23 because thats the only weekend I have time to spend 8 hours a day and I am glad I did it finally. The good thing about AMO is the classroom instruction is done via zoom so you don't need to drive in which is partially the reason why I chose to take it through AMO. The zoom classes with Sheryl were great, she kept everyone engaged and offered a lot of her own tips on stuff she thought we would find useful as beginner riders. On the range I had Guillermo and Nemo as instructors and Neal who was helping out and learning to be an instructor too. G and Nemo were patient and gave me tips and instructions on how to be a better rider and what I needed to do to turn better and exit tighter, etc. Even though it rained the first day and we were all miserable G and Nemo kept a good attitude and helped us get through it. Karima, Indie, and Jacob were all great instructors. I had very limited experience riding motorcycles on the street and had only done a lot dirt biking. They were able to help me improve my on road riding techniques and teach me skills to avoid an accident. Both the riding and the written test were not that hard because of all the training they give you before you take the tests.
