I rode a scootuh for 13 years when I lived and worked abroad at universities. I only got it for traveling around campus to my classes and my university apartment for professors. Some of us had to teach at the other older campus which required public or private transportation. I started having fun with the scootuh and traveling long distances, even for hours. It was too slow and dangerous for traveling along highways. Pretty soon within 5 years I finally bought a new HD Night Train with 1450 CCs, something pretty rare at the time in that country. It wasn't my first choice but it resembled a 1970s chopper. The riding test for motorcylces was too simple: ride in a number 8 pattern without touching the ground with your feet, which can be accomplished in a few minutes. The written test in English was even easier. I rode for 7 years and wasn't aware I was riding unsafely. It's a miracle I only had two minor accidents at very low speeds, one on my scootuh and the other on my motorcycle. Both were by people who opened the passenger doors, subsequently knocking both the scootuh and motorcycle sideways on two different occassions. I wasn't found at fault on both of those accidents (only 10% on the bigger bike) and the other parties paid for everything. I stopped riding altogether for 13 years after I returned to my home. I was overcoming several things througout the years, especially my mother's sudden death which really messed me up. I was her caregiver for many years and it was time to move on, so I decided to finally resume riding again. I sold my convertible and my mother's Volvo. Driving cars just doesn't have that joy it once had when I was younger. My goal was to get a late 50s or early 60s chopper many years ago but I settled for the Night Train at that time. Now I wanted something more adventurous like a dual sport because that cool era of riding chopped bikes is long gone. Taking this course really piqued my interest in sport bikes especially when I heard Ron and Carbon talk about their adventures. It's about the ride, not the image. I mean at least when you mature and get older. That's one of the lessons that I took from this class, even though it wasn't my goal. It was inadvertant because I was still thinking about a 1950s/early 60s chopper a little less than a year ago. But my main goal was to pass the course because I had taken only the written test a year ago at the DMV. I failed the written test twice there because I didn't study hard enough. I assumed it was going to be easy just walking into the DMV after I began the registration process where they take your photo and test your eyesight. A week later I finally passed the written test after studying hard. I was hesitant to take the riding test because of how hard people say it is to pass it. But I thought my 13 years riding experience might be sufficient to pass it. So I was deciding between that and a class like Arroyo's. I hit severe depression and didn't do anything about getting a license for almost a year. I finally decided it was now or never and I registered for Arroyo's, hoping that I would get the certificate in time before my registration process at the DMV expired. It wasn't meant to be and that was good. I didn't need to rush through the process. I assumed that the classes would be easy because I had 13 years of scootuh experience and 7 years riding a big bike. I also had studied well for the written test at the DMV before finally passing it last year. Very little of that mattered as I would later find out. I didn't pass the written test at Arroyo's the first time but I didn't complain. It only compelled me to study harder. I was able to take another class the following week and subsequenlty completed the course. I was surprised by how many mistakes and bad habits I had when I took this class. As a result of taking this course, I retook the DMV written test today and passed it. I only made one mistake, which I knew but hesitated to change my answer. The primary lesson that stood out from this class is the concepet of expert rider. I don't think I aimed for that goal while riding abroad from 2001-2013. I was having too much fun especially in a country where laws are subjective and controlled chaos reigns supreme. Both Carbon and Ron are competent instructors and I did enjoy some of their humor. The only complaint I have is that one of the bikes wasn't functional, even though I was making mistakes. A week later, I saw a student on that same bike experiencing ignition problems with it. Ron finally took it away to be repaired and replaced it with another bike. I hope to take another class after I get my motorcycle. I read from other older riders online that they've never had an accident. I always heard that it's not if you have an accident but when because all motorcycle riders eventually end up having one. But that's false. I've already experienced two accidents but they could have been avoided if I had been an expert rider. read more

I am so grateful for Arroyos Motorcycle Course. I am a beginner rider who had never even rode a motorcycle before. My reason for coming here was to mainly learn how to operate a motorcycle safely and to learn how it functions. Sheryle and Brian were thee best .... I learned so much from Sheryle as she was very detailed in class and on the range. One thing I liked most is that Sheryle and Brian were both straightforward and very detailed in their exposition and demonstrations. Took the motorcycle training course this past weekend and Sheryle and Brian were awesome. I highly recommend this course to anyone who's interested in riding a motorcycle. Sheryle does a great job teaching the class curriculum. Within the first hour of day 1 in class, I could tell I was in good hands despite my lack of knowledge and anxiety stemming from that. I appreciated her additional comments because it provided more insight on the motorcycle scene and what to expect. Onto the course, both Sheryle and Brian were amazing instructors. They were clear at explaining everything, answered questions, and pushed us in ways that helped us learn, but not over the top. Thank you Carbon and Ron for leading this Instructional course on both Theoretical and Hands-on techniques on how to ride a mototrcycle. I took the 2-day in person CMSP and it is a fast-paced course. First few hours we were going over the CMSP handbook ( not the DMV one, its different), and by the afternoon we are on the bikes riding. ( This depends on the class size) As a beginner, with zero knowledge and zero experience this is THE class to take regardless of skill level. Emphasis on THE, because this class breaks down the very basics and the details of the dos and donts. Its very encouraged to take this class, dont let your ego or clout thinking "naw i'll just learn it on my own from some social media influencer or Youtuber". Yeah no dont. Carbon was great because he uses his own experience as a motorcyclist as an example to some of the everyday scenrios every motorcyclist will and potential face whether on the road, street, or racetrack. He will always stress that this is for your safety. Both Carbon and Ron were very patient and encouraged us all on what we did well or messed up. Easily pointing out what to work on. I took the Motorcyclist Training Course over the weekend (03/22/2025 - 03/23/2025) at Mt. Sac. I went in thinking I would not learn a lot (as i learn best by doing) and would spend little time actually on a bike and a lot of time in the classroom. Well... Darrel and Ron were the instructors with Darrel providing the classroom instruction and both he an Ron training riders on the rage with class provided motorcycles. Classroom: There is no way you will leave this class without a firm understanding of the dangers of riding a motorcycle AND what you can do to avoid them. You will be taught all of the controls that are on a motorcycle so when u approach one u will know exactly what you are looking at and what it does. It did not go into grave detail about engine parts or anything like that but how to control the bike in all situations is thoroughly explained. If you apply yourself, you will leave the classroom ready for the range and ready to apply that newly acquired knowledge to hone the skill of riding. Classroom experience was 5-Star Range: Everyone was assigned a motorcycle that suited them and their learning experience. HERE IS WHERE I WISH I COULD GIVE 10 STARS!!! Have you ever heard the phase "He on yo helmet!". They were on our HELMETS!!!! You could not make ONE wrong move without getting the feedback from BOTH instructors. No matter how good you did riding, they found your flaws and made you address them. They were HARD on us. Why? Because riding is dangerous and you have to ALWAYS be on your toes. First day riding I was nervous. But after a few exercises I got the hang of the basics by applying what I learned in the class and read before class. By day 2 it felt like I had been riding for much longer than 2 days lol. I passed the written test in the class with a 96% and got a perfect scoring on the riding skills test. Had Darrel not been on my Helmet reminding me "TURN YO HEAD BEFORE THE TURN! COVER THE CLUTCH! DONT COVER THE BREAK!" and triple repeating what would be on the written exam, I don't think I would have done as well. If Ron had not been on my helmet reminding me to down shift when I come to a stop, I would not be ready to take off when need be from a stop. These brothas spared no feelings in favor of safety and education. But no one is hard on you while encouraging you if they don't believe in you. There were 12 students when we started. One student was excused. Everyone else passed and got the certificate. The student was excused for their safety and the safety of others (Non performance on the range). I completed the course yesterday and am currently waiting on the DL389 to come in the mail. I went to DMV this morning (03/24/2025), took the M1 written test, and passed that too. Most of what was on the test at DMV was covered in the Class with Darrel. If you plan to ride and are looking to educate yourself to be safe before hand... Pay the $425 and take the class. Its well worth it. It will save u so much money, heartache and pain in the long run. I have no regrets and will be sending anyone who asks to this particular class. I didn't have any experience when starting out the Arroyo Motorcycle Training class at Mt. Sac, but I was welcomed by Coach Carbon who was a big help with both the written exam and the motorcycle riding training. The class was very thorough and had a clear lesson plan from the start. The structure was organized and I was able to learn the 9 chapters required for the written exam on motorcycle safety. The riding portion was with a smaller group of 6, but it was a good pace and beginner-friendly for both days. I was able to learn the basics on how to ride a motorcycle and also the more advanced techniques on day two. The enthusiasm and passion can be felt from Coach Carbon as well as Coach Roy at this program. I definitely recommend this course for anyone who has 0 or a little experience riding motorcycles because it made me want to ride one even more. read more

best experience i could ask for. Derryl and Cherryl are very great at their job. the training was informative and detailed. ive been riding off road for some time now and i learned a lot how to handle my newly purchased bobber. im going to add a story of why derryl is a great and funny man. im new to motorcycles and ive left my keys in the ignition 2 times now. the first was at work and the 2nd was on the 2nd day of my training course. we were on our first break. my motorcycle was in my eye sight from the parking lot. i noticed derryl checking out my bike and thought he wiped something off the bike. well another hour later we completed the test and he instructed us to drive over to the course if we passed. being the 2nd done i went to my bike to show a few others so they had a reference for when they bought their bike. at this time im telling the people yea check it out i just gotta find my keys. as im looking through my pockets and back pack i told them all "i think i did something dumb. i think i left the keys in the ignition" then it hit me derryl was checking out my bike. a few asked "you think he stole your keys" i said no hes teaching me a lesson. i did the long walk of shame back to the class seen him grading a test and asked "hey buddy......by any chance.....did you happen to find some keys?" his response was nothing short of comedy gold. he said " you know i was checking out a bike, and i did notice some keys in the ignition. now i knew that couldnt possibly be one of my students" the whole time im looking down laughing because this man was having a good time busting a new riders balls. we spent the rest of the time joking about turning off the practice bikes because some people in the course has a problem with letting bikes die. so i would yell back WHO!!!! NAME HIM!! after all this and the class passing the course i went to get AAA to jump my bike with another student and who comes pulling up? Derryl asking wheres my battery. i told him and he says "no problem well get you jumped right now. no need for AAA" before leaving Derryl said just dont have a stalling problem or youre in trouble. shook his hand said bye and got ready to leave. because i was on their bikes for 5 hours i let my clutch out too quick and stalled. me and the other student just said fffuuuuuuuuuu@@@@%%%%%. but i got lucky and it started again. derryl is a great instructor and i wouldnt have wanted to take a course from anyone else. I'm so happy with my experience with the beginner training class. I was lucky to have Carbon and Ron as my trainers. Keep in mind, they are training you to do something that is dangerous. They are firm in their guidance and won't let you just pass because you paid to be in the class. Their goal is to ensure your safety and knowledge of the dangers of riding as much as possible before letting you pass. After weeks of struggling to get into an AMO class closer by my house, having it get cancelled, refusing to refund me (but not giving me options to pick a different class time)--and also considering MTC classes are a state/DMV thing, I wasn't really hopeful that this would be a good experience. It was just something I had to get done. This class turned out to be great, and Darrell specifically was great. He teaches with a perfect balance of being knowledgable but concise, and inserts just enough humor here and there to keep everyone interested and paying attention, but never so much that it's a distraction or wastes time. First of all, if you haven't considered taking the CMSP Motorcycle Training Course at Mt Sac THIS IS THE TIME TO DO IT! The class is a two day course where you learn how to become a safe rider. My instructor was Darrel. He's super knowledgeable in his craft with many years of biking experience. Day one you start by watching slides and mini videos on how to ride safely. You will also learn life saving riding techniques. Later that day you WILL be on the range on a bike! They have many different cc motorcycle options. I chose the Honda Grom! (Super fun and light weight bike, btw) Once on the field you will immediately learn about the foundations of your bike. Each step is a learning process but the process is quick! Darrell will take the time to ensure you're ready for the next step. If not, you will need to go home and practice what you've learned. But don't be dismayed! You have the opportunity to come back within a certain time span for free. Darrell wants to make sure the rider is completely capable before he passes you to the next round. On day two, we spend most of the morning learning more advanced techniques. This day will be "THE" testing day. First is the written portion which is 50 questions (I only missed one!) once you pass that you are now back on the range practicing those advanced techniques on your bike. The day will end when you pass the riding portion of the test. Once you have successfully completed the course you will receive your certification of completion. Things to be considered: 1. Wear your gear on DAY ONE. You WILL be riding! 2. Take notes! 3. If you've never been on a motorcycle or you're not familiar with one I highly recommend you YouTube the basics of the bike (ie: how to shift, bike gears, etc) although you will go over that in the class expect the class to move fast! Give yourself time to become acquainted so you're not super lost when you get there. 4. Bring snacks and water. We do not take long lunch breaks just a few 10 min breaks throughout the day. 5. Come in with a positive attitude and the willingness to learn! 6. Once you pass this course you will still need to go to DMV and pass the written exam there. This training course only waives the riding exam. 7. ARRIVE ON TIME! Id like to express my deepest gratitude to Darrell at Mt Sac for teaching me what I've learned. I will take these skills to become a safer and skilled rider. He made the class fun and enjoyable. I was excited the entire time. I passed the course on the first try! My entire class did actually! I am now comfortable riding motorcycles on my own. Having absolutely no previous experience on a motorcycle, I now feel confident about the learning of how to operate a motorcycle. They teach you at a beginners pace and don't move forward until you grasp the current concept. They teach safe practices and habits as well as what to do in unexpected/dangerous situations. Hands down the best experience! I had Darrel and Carbon! They provided me with great feedback and would also trouble shoot your riding issues. If you come in with an open mind and unlearn what you learned in YouTube University, guaranteed you will come out a better and safer rider. I was only riding for 3 months on my permit and still couldn't grasp specific techniques and concepts. I now understand stand what they mean when they say LITERALLY look through your turns. Shoulder placement when leaning/ turning and most importantly know how to stop in an emergency. They even taught me how to do the tight slalom which was set up much more difficult than the DMV test (hint, you don't even look at the cones when doing it) Key Terms to know would be the A3 and SPAT. 96% and Lightning.
