Worst customer service!! I ordered 1 just 1 black Nike hoodie and got a navy blue 1. I tried 5x to chat and every time I got disconnected. I finally called and after 20 minutes of holding i was told they could offer me a $5 discount. Ever find yourself halfway to your destination, and you forgot to pack your swimsuit? Well, that happened to me on a recent trip to Galveston, where everybody was going to the pool and guess who forgot their bathing suit? I remembered all the other accoutrements: sunglasses, cute hat, flip-flops, sunscreen, and everything but, you guessed it, my bathing suit! Using my trusty Yelp app, I found a nearby beach place that sold bathing suits, and when I walked in, I was greeted by the sales person over the sound of large fans and classic rock. I tried on a bathing suit, but to my chagrin, these coconuts needed bigger holders. So I thanked the sales person and headed around the corner to Academy where I bought a two-piece front zippered top and matching bottom that looks like I should be surfing on a surfboard but if you know me, that is highly improbable. So I headed back to the hotel with a $91 purchase that I thought was overkill for a pool party and very unlikely for me to wear again. Once I got back to the hotel, it seems that pool plans were not going to happen and we were going straight to dinner. So your girl never got to wear, said beach outfit. She nice back home, a few days later, I looked at the bag with receipt inside, bathing suit pieces untouched, I decided to head to my local Academy to return it, and I wondered if I would have problems. When I walked through the door, I was greeted by security and he opened the bag and put a return orange sticker on it and directed me to a cashier who immediately scanned it And asked me no questions and the funds were immediately returned to my card, I just had to print my name sign and that was it. When I was in elementary school, they gave me a test where they instructed me to read all of the directions before taking the test. If you've been given this exam, you know it ends by telling you to not take the test. I failed it because I didn't follow directions. Flash forward to my adult life. One day I get a package that tells me I've won a spot batting at Minute Maid field to win a house. Apparently, I entered a contest that required me to use my sports skills in a competition. Obviously, this was another case where I filled out the form without reading the directions. Well, I decided to meet the challenge but I needed gear to practice so I went directly to Academy. Knowing that I was going to compete against a variety of people in a few short weeks, I knew I needed equipment as close to what I would use on the field the day of the competition and Academy had the best selection. Since I know next to nothing about baseball, I grabbed a helpful employee and had them help me pick out all the best wooden bat, regulation sized baseballs, batting gloves and a cap. Since I would also be batting from a tee, I picked up one of those as well. In my time of sporting goods need, Academy set me up to be the best I could possibly be on the field. This is a decent spacious Academy location right off the corner of I-10 and Grand Parkway. I've browsed here a couple of times. Prices are typical for a brick and mortar sporting goods store (i.e. more expensive than Amazon, but you get to try everything in person). Staff is reasonably friendly, but they could definitely stand to open a few more check out lanes. The one thing they do well here are special events. I normally come out here for when they have a local athlete signing autographs. On my last visit, Brad Davis of the Houston Dynamo was signing autographs. I met one of the most rude and inconsiderate persons I've ever met in my life today - working/managing the Customer Service counter at this location. No name tag, but she wore hair braids. She dismissed me because I was in line for an exchange; and, rather than help me, given I had been in line for some time. instead she directed me to the long checkout lines and telling the person behind me to step forward, without the slightest apology. This is why I hate this time of year because the employees like her, tend to be rude, without giving thought that some customers are year-round supporters of their business. I ordered two items for curbside pick-up this past weekend. I waited to receive email confirmation that the items were ready. I parked in one of the curbside spots, clicked on the link in the email, as per the instructions, and waited for my items to be brought out. I waited over 30 minutes with no response. I called the phone number that was in the email and on the sign at the curbside spot and the phone was never answered. I tried calling the number five times and started to try different options in an attempt to actually get through to someone. Eventually, I left without my items. I tried calling yesterday morning with the same result. Academy, your curbside service is a joke. Your customer service i.e. answering the phone, is a joke as well. This Academy is the closest one to my home and usually has what I need. I shop here for me and my son for all of our sporting needs. I have a closet full of tennis and athletic wear from here. This day I was shopping for a gas grill that I had seen at the one on Hwy 6 near my job. I guess I waited too close to the holiday as this store was out of the particular one that I picked out. This Academy is good for general, affordable sporting goods. Great shoe selection, bikes, and ski apparel. If you have kids in sports, come to this location. SHOES Shoes specials are posted weekly in the circulars, which you can also browse online. Major shoe brands include Nike, Reebok, Asics, Saucony in all price ranges. Note that most of the shoes in the cheapest category are usually the ugliest. You can find good shoes for your kids in the $40-$60 range. Academy also has a good selection of socks and insoles. My wife is a runner and prefers Luke's Locker and Sun & Ski to Academy's selection, but we always buy my kid's shoes at this Academy. BIKES For cheap bikes, Academy's bike selection is generally good, and better than what I have seen at Walmart or Target. Major consumer brands are covered. I have purchased bikes for my family at this location, and have been happy with most of the bikes. A couple of the last bikes purchased could have been better quality. In the last couple of years, I have shifted my bike purchases to Sun & Ski and Bike Barn. Bikes cost more there, but last a bit longer. Academy has a good a decent selection of bike accessories. Tires, tubes, helmets, gloves, lights, and more can be found at this location. I usually find Walmart and Academy a toss-up for for their good, general bike accessory selection. SKI APPAREL The apparel section across from the bike section of the store turns into a good ski apparel section in the cold months of the year. Caps, gloves, socks, thermals, pants are all good quality at a good price. Ski coat selection is good for kids, but could be better for adults. I have purchased many different ski apparel items over the years at this location. GENERAL SPORTS APPAREL Some sports apparel can be found at this location, although I have seen a larger variety and more brands at the FM1093 & Spring Green location. Academy's own BCG brand is generally good quality for the price. If you are into labels, Academy has the major brands covered. This location has a good selection of golf, cycling and general fitness apparel. OTHER SPORTING GOODS Other items I have purchased at Academy include weight lifting equipment, a pop-up shelter, gun equipment, camping equipment, watches and iPhone cases. Happy with almost all purchases. Academy also carries a good selection of local sports teams apparel and souvenirs, including high school, college and pro teams. Overall good product variety and solid quality and a great price. To sum it up, think of a Bass Pro Shop mixed with a Sports Authority and a SAMs Club warehouse. That's what Academy is...definitely not a boutique sporting goods store. No frills and prices similar to Amazon. Academy is my family's general go-to place for sporting goods. Absolute horrible experience where they held my wife's ID for an hour and a half and then refused to sell to her. My wife went to buy multiple things. One item was a shotgun for her and I to share when we go skeet shooting together. She filled out the background check done and continued her shopping. She was notified her background check came back completed so she waited to finish the purchase. She waited for over an hour while the only customer service representative argued with another customer. They would not give her her ID back or help her in any way until it was her turn. Finally the other customer left and they gave my wife her aid back and she went to pay. I had given her my credit card to pay for it but they insisted that the ID on the credit card had to match the person purchasing it. So I told her to go ahead and just buy it and I will transfer the money to her. At this point they go off on how this was an illegal straw purchase and they refused to sell her the gun at all. I talked to the manager on the phone and explained that a straw purchase was not one spouse buying a shotgun for her and her husband to share. And it is complete legal to purchase firearms for anyone as a gift even if it wasn't community property between husband and wife. A straw purchase is specifically buying a gun for someone who is not legally allowed to own one, which is not the case here. The manager then shifted and said it wasn't the law, it was their internal policy. I said, no it's not, you just don't know the policy and you're err on the side of caution instead of spending 5 minutes to look it up. She responded back, "oh my god. Can someone 'mansplain' this to him because he's just not fucking getting it?" So I told them they lost 2 customers for life and my wife left the store after an hour and half of wasted time. As my wife was leaving, the manager then shifted her argument back to "it's the FBI, not us". So she just kept flip flopping between blaming the law and their internal policy whenever it suited her argument because she doesn't know either of them. I have to say this is one of the most organized, friendly staffed and well stocked location that I have been to. We had to pick up some extra folding chairs on the way to the beach and you can't beat the price at $5.99/each. Upon entering the store the greeter told me that she would send someone to get the tape for me so I didn't have to walk. Two people ran to the back of the store and brought me every color of tape so I had options. As I was walking out someone even offered to carry my bag for me. First..... I want to say that I really like Academy stores and visited this location to purchase a firearm. After visiting three other local Academy stores in Houston I was able to find the item I was looking for at this Katy location. I was ready to make the purchase but learned that Academy has a policy of one firearm per week when I went to check out. I had made my first every firearm purchase three days before at another Houston Academy location . I offered to pay for the item and return to pick it up later in the week so they would follow the policy. Unfortunately, the store would not allow me to purchase it and they would not the item for me either. I did speak to the Store Manager to ask for an exception as I am new to firearms but he said it was corporate policy. Even after I explained that I had visit three other stores looking for this item. The store manager and salespeople were very nice but were not willing to make an exception for me. I left disappointed knowing I had wasted my time and gas. read more

I have been dealing with a return issue for almost a month. The company had a misprint on their web site and I have now spent hours on the phone, packaging a return, driving to Fed Ex and following up with the company to resolve the issue. While the company has acknowledged the problem being their mistake, they have yet to make it right... even after I have returned the product. The customer service representatives are extremely kind but have no authority to resolve any actual issue and honestly, I'm just tired of trying to deal with this company. ironically, I was offered a 20% off coupon for my troubles... Really??? This may be an isolated incident but based upon my experience as well as the prices and products at Academy Sports, I would NOT recommend doing business with this company. I'm writing this review days after the incident because I am still shaking from my experience. I was in the restroom doing number 2, when all of a sudden I heard a loud "BANG". Somebody had shot a live firearm inside the store!!!! Next thing I heard was somebody being verbally assaulted right outside the door. I was so frightened I jumped off the toilet seat without wiping and ran out the restroom. I have never feared more for my life than in that moment. I quickly made my way to the exit and fled the war-zone. I don't think anybody was hurt because I never saw any reports about the incident on Fox News. It was nearly a Walmart 2.0!!! read more
