addition:after i posted the review i proceeded to checkout to find a line literally wrapper around the store. i just dropped all of my items right there and left. i dont even give one star reviews. im just sitting here mad. mad mad mad. It's deceiving when you look for something online and it says it's "available" here. So you stop in and look and it's not there. Then you realize that yes, it's available to buy online and SHIP TO STORE... it's not that it's available to be picked up right away. (Sigh). About 4 or 5 workers walked right past me while I was searching for this bbq item and not one asked me if I needed help. Found a similar item available at Sam's Club so I went there and bought it... didn't have to order it and wait a week before I got it. Academy's prices are generally higher anyways... Definitely not worth getting curbside service and customer service does not answer the phones... or at least if and when they do it's almost as long as it takes to have an item brought out in the quoted "10 minutes or less".... Which that too was an additional waste of time as it was much longer. Went in to buy the baby some boots that were on sale. Well I couldn't find the size in question but the website stated they had in stock, so I found a worker that stated if you don't see we don't have. I looked around anyway just in case I ran across another worker that probably didn't know her own name she just works there so I went to customer service that wasn't really customer service because there was a line and was told they were all customer service but she did assist me anyways in which I had to make the order for boots on line and would get a email when available for pickup. Well I got a email immediately after stating that my order was ready for pickup the same day go figure. No problem I just need them. read more

Went here on a Saturday at noon. The store had recently been remodeled to a new checkout setup similar to Dick's. The line to checkout was wrapped around the front aisle all the way to fishing and down that aisle too. Nothing in the store was marked at a price worthy of waiting in a line as long as that. I have never seen this at this store before. I can only assume the remodel and new checkout is not working as they envisioned. The employee at the fishing counter looked on helplessly. Maybe he could've tried checking a few of us out? Idk. I dropped my attempted purchases on his counter and vacated the store. Maybe on Black Friday this is acceptable but not on any old Saturday. read more

Understanding the bare shelves and minimal customer support due to Covid, the staff is the rudest I've dealt with since the beginning our "new normal". During my most recent visit, I asked for help finding a few things and was treated as if I was bothering them or inconveniencing them to simply point me in the right direction. I'm a firm believer that customer service can break you or make you. Academy management needs to take a good hard look at how they are training their staff in dealing with customers. read more

Let me start off by saying I don't come to academy's but the time I did I was in line waiting and I didn't know that they used the number speaker to call up the next person because they weren't using them when I got up there. So I walked up to the register and VIRGINA who is supposedly a "lead" was there and had just finished taking someone so I see her writing one a paper so I let her finish without rushing her and this lady looks up and in a rude tone is like "that's why we have a button and we click the button so the person can come up to the register" and I was confused because I never once came up to her rude and for her to be a "lead" is absolutely crazy. I told some friends and family and crazy enough they said that miss VIRGINA had also been rude to them in the past. I called about 10 time and nobody was answering the phone until finally I talked to the manager. All I'm saying is virgina shouldn't be in a higher position if she doesn't know how to act with the title . Tonight I sent my daughter and one of my employees into Academy to purchase a ninja 30 quart ice chest. I gave them cash and wanted one employee to check it out before having other employees purchase one. The lady at the register did not take the tag off and the alarm went off when they exited the building. They showed the receipt and the person at the door removed the tag. However, the problem started next. My daughter turned around and the lady that had checked them out at the register was leaned over the counter, laughing. My daughter exited the building and called me. I told her to get the managers name and the employees name and to bring me the receipt. Customer service is so bad in most places these days. It is really embarrassing when this happens in any store but to turn around and have the lady at the register think this is funny is beyond me. I will be contacting the manager tomorrow, returning the ice chest, and purchasing it at Home Depot. There were eight of my employees that would've purchased this ice chest at $200. That is $1600 this employee has caused this Academy location to lose. In the long run, it will be more than that because I will never shop in any Academy again. I'm a runner, so anytime I am near places that have shoes, hydration belts, moisture wicking clothes and Sport Beans, I get giddy. So I do love to come here, although lately they don't seem to have as much to choose from. But they are remodeling so maybe that's part of the problem. They do have almost everything you want or need for the outdoors, and even stuff you didn't know you needed. They also have clothes if you want to show your love for your favorite sports teams. Really, I don't know what they don't have...except maybe super friendly, helpful people. I mean, they're not overly rude, but they don't typically go out of their way to help you. If you know what you're looking for, or just looking around, you'll be fine, otherwise be forewarned. All in all it's a fun place to hang out and kill some time, especially if you're an outdoor or sports enthusiast. read more

My son is a Marine and went in and was buying some workout clothes and I asked if they did military discounts and the sales associate said no. I'm here a lot with active kids. Customer Comes 3rd here. I like the store but it would be nice if the staff approached me to offer help. It bothers me that I can stand In front of store staff as they tell stories to each other and only get offered help when I interrupt their conversation. too often I have to hunt down staff for help. 4/23/17. Update. Went back again today when they opened. Someone greeted us at the door offering to help us. It was a good start But it ended there. Not only could we not find help after that but had to wait in a line of about 20 people with only 1 register open. Again staff all over the place and I had to ask them if someone else could check us out. Then and only then did they bring in help. My wife has been pushing me to go to Dicks. Three days ago I went to Academy to search for the new Nike Mercurial Vapor XII in a black and orange color way, pro model, was very satisfied with the wide variety of football boots they have, not soccer its called football also was quite surprised with them having Adidas Yeezy boost which are quite hard to find in regular retail stores like Footlocker raffles or Pacsun. Terrible place to find shoes, great place to find guns. Every time I've been shoe shopping, they never have any in my size. They never offer to order some, or help find something else. There has been one person in the shoe department that was helpful but everyone else has either ignored me or wasn't helpful. I even got pushed out of the way while someone moved and stair case and they never said excuse me or anything. But the gun section, oh man the fun gun section. There have been many times I have gone to academy and found guns for $100+ off the price of other retailers. Then I found out some other gun retailers will price match. Whether you buy from academy or not, their gun prices are fantastic. Another great area if the clothes. While they don't carry many clothes above size XL, they still have great selection. read more

For having 'Sports and Outdoors' in your name, you sure have a sad selection of athletic shoes. For women, at least. Sad part is there is definitely space to fit more styles of shoes because frankly, I don't expect to find casual day sandals or hip heels here so one would think they would specialize and selection would be awesome. Nope. I do purchase other items like hand weights, athletic shorts, etc. from this store so I have utilized it enough to have certain expectations. Shoes, don't live up to that. Carry on. For the most part, I am a fan of Academy. Typically, it is my go to place for running shoes and sporting good products. Most of the time, they have my shoe size (14). Occasionally, I will even see sizes larger then that too. I also buy my camo hunting clothes here and they are a huge hit when looking for items for camping (Boy Scouts etc). I will say that over the past few years, on some items, Academy has seemed to prefer price over quality and some items do not last as long as they should. When I need high-end archery equipment, I find myself going to a professional archery shop like Santa Fe Archery. Also, when I need high-end clothing brands like Marmot, Patagonia, Kuhl etc, I find that I have to go to REI, SUN & SKI, Bass Pro and Cabala's. However, most of the time, Academy is my first choice when looking for general sporting goods, Houston sports teams gear, and active wear like Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour. They also have decent deals on mid-range camping tents and sleeping bags. Again, if you are a weekend camper, their stuff will do. If you are hard core, spend the money elsewhere on something of better quality. With that being said, they will have what I need most of the time. I am definitely a fan. Went in on August 13th to buy a new swimsuit for my 4yr onld son and myself. THERE WAS NOT 1 SWIMSUIT FOR BOYS OR MEN IN THE ENTIRE STORE. ITS AUGUST!!!! IT IS 100 DEGREES OUT AND NOT 1 SWIMSUIT!!. Best store I've seen in the area for sports wear. I have been mostly happy with the store except for the parking lot. Plenty of spots, but the speed bumps in the parking lot are stupidly large. Honestly, watch out. There is really no reason to have them that big, and they really piss me off. Otherwise, its a great store with reasonable prices. These guys are either lazy or incompetent, I brought in a bottle of CO2 to get filled. One I had filled at academy before. Drive 30 minutes, due to all other academy's in my area having there CO2 fill station being out of order, to be told they can't fill my bottle. Keep in mind that they have filled the exact same bottle before. Spoke to a manager and he couldn't tell me what the issue was with getting the bottle filled. I'm at lost for words read more

I have not had an issue with this place. Everytime I've been I found just what I needed from workout clothes to fishing equipment and more. The staff are always helpful and seem to know exactly where everything is and they even offer to go look in the back if something isn't out. The only reason I gave them a 4 is because the restroom was not pleasant but overall they are a great place to shop. read more
