Don't write this off as just a sports goods store. Sure, that's what it is and it has a large selection of fishing, hunting, camping, baseball, football, softball, etc stuff. I love the wooden baseball bat section. It's also a great place for active clothing, shoes, and grilling and smoking/grilling gear. I bought my offset smoker here and love to visit the smoker accessory aisle. It is the best place in Winston to buy wood chips and chunks for the smoker. They have a big variety of woods (apple, cherry, maple, oak, pecan etc) and sizes from chips to chunks. I just found out they're dog friendly. My pup is definitely going on the next trip here. read more

You will not see very many people using an Academy Credit Card at the store for several crazy reasons. 1. You apply on line at the store and are informed that in 7-10 days you will receive a letter requesting additional information. The letter is from Comenity Capital Bank. 2. You call the bank and they verify basic information. 3. The bank then tells you to contact all three credit bureaus and update your information that is on file. 4. Once the bank checks to see your credit is updated they will send you another letter. I don't know anyone who must contact the credit bureau's before obtaining credit. In the real world a credit application by the company issuing the card checks your credit and makes a decision. Don't waste your time with a Academy Sports Credit Card. read more

I placed an online order and waited 2 weeks for it to finally tell me that it was being shipped or so I thought. Was supposed to be shipped by FedX and received by 12/9 12/10. Never received. On top of that I was charged 2X. $53.49 and $37.44. Should only have been charged $37.44. Try to get a hold of someone, its a joke. Save yourself aggravation and don't shop here. Dec 22 2024 came in the store bought the display of the air hockey/pool table. Paid for it, left got my husband to get someone to help pick it up they got to the store my husband gave them the receipt and him and his friend got it on the truck ( Major Heavy) got it to the house I was like...this is not the one I bought, it was the display and it said that on the receipt...THEY HAD SOLD IT RIGHT UNDER ME!!!!!! And told me if I wanted a refund I need to find a way to bring it back!! The manager was very RUDE so of course there Christmas wasn't like it should have been because someone else not doing their job right. But of course they don't care so I had to hire someone to bring it back to get my money back. What happened to doing your best for the customer. read more

I love shopping at Academy Sport! I love that they are building so close to home. They have a wide variety of sporting ware to your general outdoor clothing. Reasonable pricing than any other outdoor store. Huge section on fishing items and hunting, as well as guns and ammunition. Their firearm section is cheaper than most places I've been to. They carry some of the best name brands in clothing and products in general. Customer service is always around and helpful! read more

I was in dire need of lantern wicks and could NOT find them anywhere in Winston (Walmart Supercenter, various hardware stores, etc.) until I ventured into Academy Sports and hit the hiking department, which a friendly female-of-color sales associate with broads personally walked me to, herself. Upon checkout, the cashiers were quite kind and personable, making my brief but mandatory visit a sweet and successful one. read more

Went to Academy to look for some running shorts. As we walked in, we looked at the check out line and it was LONG! Found a pair of running shorts I wanted but it wasn't easy. Looked in several areas under several brands. Few options but not the traditional running shorts. Got to check out line and it was more reasonable. When I got through, I noticed a huge wall of traditional running shorts for women. Asked an employee, "is there an area like that for men's shorts?" He said yes and was very helpful, leading me to an area that I hadn't found before with a few more. Found what I was looking for and headed to check out. GEEZE the line was about twice as long as when we walked in. Decided to come back another time to buy them. The moral of the story is, "ask first!" (not easy for men) and if you go to a very popular store, expect to wait to check out. read more

My son bought me a pair of pants from these guys for Christmas. Unfortunately they were too small so I took them back with the original price tag still attached for $55. As usual, they only had smalls so I asked for a store gift card. After some discussion, they gave me a gift card but rang it up at $37. When i showed the attached price tag at $55 the cashier told me my son bought them on sale for $37. Since it was a gift, and I had no idea what my son paid for them, I assumed the cashier would not lie to me. I called my son and told him about the exchange, and he blew up, he paid $55 for the pants. He took the card, my receipt, and his original receipt back to the store. After arguing with a couple of cashiers, the store manager got in on the discussion. The manager did not believe my son, even with the receipt, and did not refund his money until watching video of him actually buying the pants. All of this over $18. Poor customer service and Academy has now lost business from my family, all my sons, all their cousins, and everybody we can tell about how they treat their customers. Happy New Year. read more

I was browsing the gun selection, and the guy behind the counter was so helpful, answered my ignorant questions without judgment, and made suggestions. I couldn't have asked for better. read more

Never Buying from Academy Again! Picked up my online order today and they delivered it to my car. I got home thinking you would be buying a sealed box of bullets, but no. I open the box and 9 of the rounds were missing from the box of 25! I immediately call the online number and was told to contact the store. I call the store and they said we cannot accept any returns on ammo. Once it leaves our front door it's yours. I said well your person brought it out to me. Then I was told the person filling the order should have checked it better and sorry about my luck, but we cant do anything. We could give you 10% off of this order if you come back in. Yeah, a whole $3 to go back for 9 missing bullets ($1.28 each). I would spend that much in gas. Never buying a single thing from Academy and letting all my friends and family know as well. You all need to catch who is stealing the ammo from the boxes at the Winston-Salem location. read more

At 6:30 pm, I went to the Academy Sports website to purchase some click-together mats for my new home gym. I saw that I had the option of paying online, then picking up curbside. Perfect! I finished my order around 6:40. Realizing the store closed at 7:00, I was totally content in getting my merchandise the following day. Within a couple of minutes, I got a text and an email stating my items were ready for pickup. I drove the 5 minutes to the store, pulled up to curbside pick-up parking....replied to the text...that I was there. One minute till closing time, and an associate comes out with my merchandise, checks my ID and placed the mats in my trunk. SO easy and quick! I highly recommend this method of shopping. I went by the Academy Sports store in Winston Salem Sunday, March 28th, wanting to look at some treadmills and rowing machines. As I walked in, there was a sign on the door that mask wearing was mandatory, but there were no employees, cleaned carts, etc in sight. I quickly saw that a very large number of customers were maskless and crowding together, with no attempt by staff to enforce mask and social distancing. A couple of times I stopped to look at an item, only to have someone else leaning over my shoulder. By the time I'd walked halfway through the store I'd seen several dozen people without masks and no employees seeming to care, so I turned around and left. If I ever go back, it will be long after the pandemic has passed, and the store has received a total deep cleaning. read more

Perhaps the slowest front checkout and worst customer service. Store employee Deja needs an attitude adjustment and a lesson in consumer-centric service. Manager Brittany is clueless and was more focused on trying to give me a coupon to remedy the situation rather than deal with the poor attitude of her employees. They had the large item I was purchasing in stock and on sale. I also picked up a pair of tennis shoes and socks for my daughter. I went to this store on a weekday morning looking for a pair of pants that was featured online. After wandering for 45 minutes and being chased by the person with the vacuum, I finally found a sales associate willing to speak to an actual customer. She brought me to the pants but told me they did not have the color I was looking for. She mentioned a pair of exercise pants totally different from what I was considering. I wandered around aimlessly for a while more and returned to the rack thinking I could at least try the pants on for size in the wrong color. Behold, the color I was looking for was on the back of the wall peg. My size was not in stock, so I gave up on the pants. I was also interested in purchasing an activity tracker but couldn't find anyone to show me the model in the case. I did purchase a folding chair and the salesperson asked me if I had found everything I was looking for. When I said "no", she said, "well at least you found a chair" and completed the sale. The prices are good at this store but the poor customer service will keep me away. read more
