This place was contacted to help my son get the fireplace working in his new home. When the service was scheduled, he was told there would be a $99 minimum and then priced based on what they found. The technician was there for less than 10 minutes and charged him over $300 for a repair that involved no new parts. Further, the technician gave him a bogus invoice that indicated that he had done a "Level II Inspection per NFPA 211 standards". Nothing in that inspection was to his fireplace or to inspect his home. I would no recommend this company to anyone. They showed up 2 days later than promised. We were told there would be a $79 service call fee plus any parts that were needed to fix it, which we were good with. When the tech showed up and looked at the fireplace he said it needed to be troubleshooted and there was a loose wire causing it not to ignite. He quoted me $699 to repair it, I told him that I could buy a whole new fireplace insert for that price. He called his boss and said he could do it for $499. Long story short he cleaned it up, fixed the loose wire and was done in about 20 minutes. He came for an estimate to install a fireplace unit with direct vent. He gave an absurd $9000 for installation. The fireplace is already connected to gas and 10in from wall- so he jyst need to install the direct vent and make a hole in the exterior wall. This company ripped me off. They apparently send out subcontractors to do the job, but do not make that clear upfront and then deny any responsibility if there are any problems. In October, someone came out and removed a dead squirrel from my fireplace. I paid them nearly $2,000 to remove the carcass, do a cleaning and cap the chimney. However, this spring, another squirrel showed up in my fireplace, and another subcontractor came out and gave me a quote - that included capping the chimney, which I had paid for last fall but was never completed. The receptionist never let me talk to a manager or owner, and claimed there was nothing they could do because the person who did the work no longer worked for them. Ace Fireplace Services came to inspect and clean my chimney liner for the exhaust on my boiler. From the time they showed up to the time they left was 45 minutes. They spent minimal time vacuuming the pipe and left me with a report stating that they cleared the blockage and everything was satisfactory and safe to use. I turned on my boiler after they left but the blockage in the pipe was still there as it caused a carbon monoxide leak that the fire department and Center Point Energy had to respond to. After calling numerous times to talk to someone about their lack of service, they said a manager would call me back as they shouldn't have made an appointment with me to begin with as they don't do that type of work. When the manager finally did call me back, Ace Fireplace Services offered a refund of the cleaning services but said they still had to charge for the inspection fee. I called them to come back out and they wanted to charge another inspection fee to come out and told me they don't just replace a gas valve. They have to replace the whole unit at a price of $2500. WE had a terrible experience with this company--they canceled twice and finally came on Christmas Eve. The man spoke zero English, therefore we communicated through google translate. I told him what was wrong with our fireplace (the pilot light wouldn't stay on). He first told me we didn't have gas because he couldn't get the light lit--then when it did light, he said we were good. But when the fire went out on its own (the exact problem we called him to repair) he told me to keep relighting the pilot light when the fire goes out--I asked him for an estimate on a new pilot light and he told me 1500. even though we put in a new one last year for under 100.. (and we could get a whole new set off gas logs for under that). We couldn't get him out fast enough. But not before he still charged us the fee for "diagnosing the problem and giving us an estimate". I was also told I would get 10% off since they canceled twice but he said he couldn't do that. I called Ace Fireplace Services to inspect my fireplace and clean my chimney. I was told the inspection would be $79 and the cleaning started at $99 up to $299. They called the morning of my appointment and gave me an arrival window of 9am to 11am. The technician showed up at 11:00 on the dot. He offered a brief explanation of what I had already been told. He looked up the chimney and asked if I had leaks because the flue was rusty. I told him there had been no leaks and I had the roof replaced 4 years ago. He immediately said that the roof was replaced because it was leaking. That was not the case at all. Heat will cause rust. He then went outside and climbed on the roof. He came back inside a few minutes later with photos of the cap and the flashing. He said the cap was very rusty (it is) and needed to be cleaned and painted to prevent the rust from eating through. He said it was "very, very expensive" to buy a new cap. I asked how much, and he said, "$2,000." I looked it up and caps cost under $100. He said that there were gaps in the concrete between the rocks of the chimney and showed me photos. He said water was getting in there. He then went outside to call his boss for an estimate. When he returned, he gave me a quote of almost $3,000 for cleaning the flue, coating it with a special paint, filling in the gaps in the rock, cleaning the rust off the cap and repainting it. I told him I could not afford that and to just do the cleaning. He vacuumed the flue for 10 minutes and charged me $379 for the inspection and cleaning. I asked why I was charged the full $300 for the cleaning, and he said because it was "very dirty". I asked what the $99 cleaning would consist of and he said, "just vacuuming the fireplace." He left my house at 11:25am. He was there for exactly 25 minutes. Oh, and he told me to make the check out to Air Duct Cleaning Services. I asked why since I had called Ace. He said they contract with Ace. I would not recommend using this company. And please don't ask for the $99 cleaning because all you will get is a vacuum job of the fireplace! Good grief! When I questioned the supervisor why it only took 10 minutes for the vacuum if the flue was "very dirty" and I was told "because our technicians are very good and work quickly." The worker pulled up in a non marked truck with out of state plates and he had no company designation on his clothing. We should have turned him away at that point but let him proceed. He first said the chimney had too much creosote to be cleaned properly the traditional way and tried selling us some chemical cleaning for over $500, our chimney is only two years old so we said no. At the end he failed the fireplace on "inspection" because of gaps in the firebox. I took pictures to the installing company, C Bennett, and they checked with the firebox company who advised the gaps are normal due to the flexing of the panels and I did some research online which supported that finding. I paid $370 for a cleaning and I'm not confident that was even done properly. This company is either not knowledgeable or were trying to get more money for a callback to pass the "inspection". On Monday, I made an appointment for noon on Wednesday. Noon Wed. came and no sweep showed up. I called the office, who said they had to call the technician, who called me and said the actual appointment arrival time was between 12 and 2 (the office didn't tell me that) but that he'd actually arrive between 2 and 3. The tech arrived about 2:20PM. Not a very good start. When I made the appointment, I asked if washing the firebox was a service that was offered. I was told (by Jackie) that it was. The service tech laughed at me when I asked him about that in person. During the appointment, I was told that this was a 'basic cleaning' and that there would be an extra charge if 'chemicals' were needed to clean creosote out of the chimney. Well, guess what? After running a brush up the chimney on a flexible pole turned by a cordless drill, the tech informed me (without providing evidence) that there was creosote buildup in my chimney and it would take an extra $300 to clean it. Which would have quadrupled the $99 charge that I had agreed to. So... I'm paying for a chimney cleaning... that doesn't include actually getting the chimney clean? Needless to say, I kicked this guy out of my home after paying him $99 for the 'basic service.' Apparently they want me to believe that it's still unsafe to use the chimney. Which means I need to get someone else to come in and do another assessment before lighting a fire. This is a classic bait-and-switch scam. That whole "There are no hidden extras" on their website is a bunch of horse manure. Avoid these clowns. I called about having my chimney inspected and cleaned. I was told my appointment was for Wednesday between 4-6 pm and they had a cleaning with inspection special for $99. My phone started blowing up about 1:30 with a number I did not recognize. It turned out to be the technician calling to tell me he will be there in 30 minutes. I left my husband at the house while I ran to the corner store and back. When I came back home the technician had come and gone already. I asked my husband what he said and was told "there is a build up of soot in the fireplace that will cost $700 to clean". My husband said he'll think about it and the technician charged my husband $50 to see ash in the bottom of the fireplace. He did not even open the flue. I would have paid more to get the things checked I needed - like the smoke shelf, the cap, and to make sure there is no damage from the house settling (like cracks or damaged masonry).
