Ace has been my "GoTo" store in Oak Harbor for over 20 years. I have ALWAYS been treated with friendly, helpful attention as soon as I enter the store. Even when I don't know exactly what I am looking for or what I need for a project, someone is there to patiently listen to my dilemma and help me find a workable solution. That being said - I was more than amazed and impressed last week, when I came in with my "tale of woe" regarding my need to quickly replace an old riding lawnmower that just died. I had looked on-line to order one, but the choices were to have one shipped directly to my home - but I have to put it together myself OR have it shipped to the store for them to put it together and then I can pick it up to take home - HOW? / WITH WHAT? The Oak Harbor ACE staff worked together to figure out how they could help me get a fully functioning new riding mower delivered my home - in 4 days. The cost was less then having one shipped to my home in a box for me to put together - AMAZING. I can't find enough words to thank them for their "over-the-top" "above and beyond" effort to help me. I love this Ace! Mainly, my affection is based on the variety they offer ranging from the obligatory hardware to the boutique filled with home decor items. I think it's great that they have some souvenir items considering the tourist traffic on the island. I didn't have reason or the need to actually be assisted by an associate, but at checkout the staff was pleasant. The pricing was average for an Ace, and I will make a point to stop in on future visits to Whidbey. read more

I have encountered Some Biased, Unprofessional, Self centered, Superior and Manipulative employees there who did not have boundaries. They confused customer service with judging or labeling anyone or anything they were unable or unwilling to comprehend. They advertise as a pet friendly store but the employees do not understand any K9 etiquette nor k9 languages. As soon as they spot my dog, they made direct, unblinking eye contact, and quickly approach the dog making high-pitched vocalizations, thrusting their hand in the dog's face, some of them will block the other end of the aisle facing and shouting at my dog. All these things were rude, confrontational and aggressive in K9 languages. My dog and II managed and tolerated well but they started picking on us. When I pointed out their own problems, they just threw mocking expressions and condescending remarks. They even scold my pet in my face. They must have had a theory that I gotta be less intelligent or trustworthy and was subject to scoff. Motivated by their bias, they became very hostile, bitter and resentful. I was harassed, bullied, intimidated, insulted and humiliated by not only low moral employees but also a clueless yet rather toxic, big mouth shopper who I could only see in this store also making derogatory remarks. Don't expect to be treated with integrity or dignity. This is what one employee said to me "we are a private business/property and we can do whatever we want". In another words, instead of "customers are always right", it was "we are private business so we are always right!" Does it sound familiar? Go figure! read more

I found that Chad and the other guy @ the Sporting Goods section to be most helpful. Was in there twice, once to ask about fishing lures and poles and licensing, and other time for another transaction. On both occasions, the Sporting Goods workers were friendly and professional; so it made me wonder about some of the 'negative' reviews posted here. I must assume that those who were negative came 'in' w/their own @$#% swirling in their heads and that nothing would have gone right for them at ANY business establishment. I have used ACE to send guns that I buy online. I try to support local stores so I again used their FFL (Federal Firearm Licensing) service and am never going back. This is the 4th gun I have bought using their services but the newer staff working the sporting section were rude from the first word exchanged. Both "gentlemen" seemed agitated from the get go and I have no idea why other than they don't like their jobs. They stated "Don't call us, we'll call you" which I already know and I obliged their request. But after 18 days of hearing nothing I called to check in. Their was a mistake with the handling of the paperwork and probably not to Ace's part and I was more than understanding but simply stated that Washington state law ALLOWS them to release the gun after 10 business days, which was well past that point. I didn't get mad, didn't say anything rude, but regardless the gentlemen followed me to the front door to escort me out (this is required by law) and proceeded to chastise me once outside the doors. I simply walked away after asking him why he was so upset and he said I insulted him in front of his other customers by explaining (not telling) my viewpoint. I will never do business there again. I don't want to call his manager and tell him what a jerk his staff are because I don't want to ruin his lively hood, but I've never had that type of experience in over 30 other transactions. I would give 0 stars if allowed because yelling at a customer in the front entrance isn't good for their store. Just had horrible customer service where the cashier repeated called me stupid. The bill due was $29.99 and $20 was paid a week earlier; I said okay, then the screen was around $50 total. She kept calling me stupid and saying the cost is $29! Anyway, the manager was called and I then let my son deal with it and the cashier was still just shaking her head no....omg. I came to ace looking for a hose for a pressure washer. When I entered the store there was a gentleman who greeted me with a smile. I showed him the hose I had that was broke and asked if he could help me find another. Right away he knew where it would be and he took me there. He even helped me remove the hose from the wand to see about replacing just the hose. But the hose had a special attachment that wasn't on other hoses and meant I needed to replace the whole thing:wand, hose, and nozzle. I had already gone to another hardware store looking for the hose. I even bought one from that store and unfortunately came home and it didn't work. This other store helped me find a hose, a wand and a nozzle for the pressure washer. They even opened a package to see if it would fit and it didn't so they kept the part and didn't charge me. Now at ace, the guy was not only not as helpful as the other store but he was kind of rude when I asked if we could open a package to see if it worked prior to my purchasing it. While this gentleman looked threw products that were sealed in a way that you could not tell exactly how the nozzle would attach to the wand, there were two workers in the next isle talking. One was yelling cruse words and was unhappy about another department "not wearing their headset". The other worker was trying to tell her to calm down and that the department had customers. Neither employee went to that department to talk to them and they were just venting. I get it, sometimes we need to vent, but if I was yelling curse words at my job, no one would be calmly trying to tell me to chill, I would be sent to the backroom to chill out for a minute, I could even be written up. Upon checking out, I told the checker I was unhappy with the yelling and that if I had kids with me I would be even more angry. He was very nice and asked about where I heard it and if I could identify the worker but I could not because they were in another isle. It seemed like he took it seriously though and I was pleased that he didn't just blow me off. In the end, I will be purchasing the hose I need online. And I will not be returning to this paticular ace hardware. I've never been to an ace that had this bad of service and I hope their higher ups can fix this one because I usually love ace. read more

My wife recently visited our local Ace Hardware, like she does on a regular basis. She shops and tries to support the local businesses and community. Their prices are higher than anywhere in town, but they always advertise they are local family owned. We spend quite a bit of money there. Today she was followed by a lady who owns the boutique in there. She was followed aisle by aisle. Lady had her hands on her hips at the end of each aisle. When my wife confronted her and asked if ahe was following her, she declared that she was because they had a lot of theft there lately. Really? So you follow potential customers aisle by aisle? Was it because she is a person of color? We will not be supporting this business anymore. My wife went to talk to the manager, who was no help. You will no longer get our money. I hope others reconsider buying from them as well. This is NOT small town charm. This is BS! Plenty of other places to shop who's prices are MUCH lower. Ace is the highest price in town but we shop there because they are locally owned. Not anymore. read more

There is always someone around to help and if they can't help you they will find somebody in the store that can and if not they will come up with some creative ideas that will work with your situation and that is very important I think it's important that we work with the mom and pop shops read more

I went into the Oak Harbor Ace Hardware for the first time today, and was stalked by a large male employee the entire time I was there. I'm not sure what vibe I gave off that he needed to follow me like a bloodhound and pop up in front of me repeatedly, asking "are you finding what you are looking for??". Before the owner responds to this review and says he was just trying to be helpful, he absolutely was not. Once is helpful, FIVE times throughout the store isn't. . It wasn't being helpful, it was being intimidating and intrusive. The first time he approached me, I said "yes, I'm finding everything ok, thank you" and kept walking, actually thinking he was trying to be helpful. Then he did it again about 3 minutes later down another aisle, as I stopped to look at humming bird feeders. Ok, weird since he just asked me, but again I said "I'm fine, thank you." I put the feeder in my cart and kept shopping. Down the next aisle I stop to look at an attachment for a kitchen mixer that there is a display of, and I'm reading the back to see if it will fit my model of kitchen aid. I feel a presence looming and there he is just silently watching me. When I make eye contact he says " need help with that?" I said "No. I'm good...." and I walk away with the humming bird feeder, and mixer attachment in my cart. Then as I'm looking at the plant hangers I had originally come in for, he pops around the corner at the end of the aisle I'm standing at, and asks again "is there something you need help with?" Literally made me jump. By that point I was so flustered and uncomfortable I put the hangers back, and went looking for my husband who was picking out a rake. I told him what was happening so we decided we would make our purchases at Home Depot instead. We come around the corner to the front of the store to leave, and there he was again, cuts in front of us and says "You decided you didn't need anything?" My husband says "not from here." And we walked out. When we got home I told my daughter (whom is an assistant manager at a retail store) exactly what happened, and she rolled her eyes and said "he followed you because he assumed you were shoplifting... that's what we have to do at our store as well when we are suspicious..." suspicious of what? I'm middle aged, wearing jeans and a top, face mask as required, and carrying a small purse. Looking at humming bird feeders, and hanging basket brackets. What on earth was suspicious? He followed me around from the minute I walked into the store. We moved here in March, and our realtor (a life long islander) recommended the place. We still chat with him regularly, and will be sure to let him know how we were treated. This was not customer service, this was borderline harassment. read more

The boutique is cute but I was followed out to my car by someone to let me know I wasn't charged for the "wrap" that went around the pillow I bought . Well the tag was on the INSIDE of the item. Well shucks, I had some unopened paint for the exterior of my house sitting on a shelf for a couple of years and decided to take it to ACE to have it shaken. When I took the can to the paint department I was told that they changed their policy on shaking paint that was brought in. I kindly informed the aging gentleman that I bought the paint at the store five years earlier but lost the receipt. He then told me that he would shake the can for $5, I gave him the money, he put it in his pocket and began shaking the can using his hands! After a couple of minutes he handed the can back to me along with a can opener and a stir stick. Appalled, I asked him why he charged me $5, he told me the stick was free but not only did the can opener open paint cans but doubled as a bottled beer opener! I suppose the giveaway was that I was holding a bottle of Budweiser but regardless...$5? Thats OK, when he gets home tonight from work I'm going to make sure there is a can of Coors waiting for him with dinner! He hates Coors... read more

They are wonderful, compared to the big box store where you stand around and no one will help you, this place I am in and out with just the right parts every time. I have been shopping here since I moved here in 1992. I am able to find things I can't find in other stores. When I first moved here I needed a broiler pan, I went to every store with no success, so one day while browsing at ACE for stove pans (which I couldn't find else where) I found my broiler pan. Once in a while they don't have what I need. I have never had bad customer service, they have always been friendly and helpful. read more

If I could give them zero stars I certainly would! You would think that in this day and age a smaller hardware store would bend over backwards to provide good customer service, as most of these types of stores have been forced out of business due to the big box store hardware stores unfortunately they just do not provide customer service at all!! There are many of the people that have worked there for years that are rude, bitter, and angry. Then you have the younger women employees where I can't even say without using vulgar language (which I will not) to describe how horrible they treat their customers. I have to say that the local Home Depot has wonderful customer service and employees that really do smile and make you feel welcome in their store, ace hardware Oak Harbor makes you feel like you are really putting them out if you ask a question.
