When I was trying to make my selection of door sweeps, an employee was in the aisle and asked if I needed any help. I shared my harrowing tale, and he let me know that they did have some snake repellant in an aisle by the register that worked pretty well. I picked up a small container of "Snake-a-Way" with my other items and was ready to arm myself against future snakes. I ran over to Ace and even though they didn't have the right key Prakash tried to make one work for what I needed. Ace is the place with the Helpful Hardware Man!! That's been there slogan for years and I have found it to be VERY true! When I first bought my house I had no idea this was so close to me but oddly enough I was excited to find out they were. Now I like big home improvement stores but sometimes you need to be able to walk in, get a screw and walk out. Ok, that sounded off, but it's true! I have had many occasions to need 1 screw, bolt, nut, piece of pipe, paint brush, sink washer, shovel, and my most favorite thing for yard work... Contractor Bags! This is one of the few places I can find to get them. Not those things that look like a heavy hefty bag. These are white almost plastic burlap woven things. They are absolutely WONDERFUL for putting trees in, broken tiles, drywall and basically anything else that would blow the bottom or sides out of a bag. These babies will hold it. I like that when you walk in there is usually someone who asks you if they can help you find something the moment you walk through the door. They will either direct you to the isle and radio ahead so someone is usually right there waiting for you or take you to it themselves if they are not behind a register. This has truly saved me countless hours of up and down isles of the larger stores looking for something they would have to special order more often times then not. They will also take your lawn mover blades for sharpening. Now the catch is, they only ship them out on Tuesdays. So mow your lawn over the weekend, take them off, take them in and 7 days later you will have them back just in time to mow again. I like Ace, and soon I will be in the marker for a new shed. Okay, so this is going to sound way sappy, but after going to this Ace hardware, I'm not really inclined to go back to Home Depot again. I needed help with a simple request: getting a lawn mower blade removed and sharpened. Called Home Depot, only to be transferred around a few times and eventually told that no, they can't help with that. Boom. Called up Ace and Steve said: "oh yeah just bring it in and I'll help you." Couldn't bring a mower into the store, of course, so he came outside, helped me get it off, and was so pleasant and fun-I ended up not only buying the right wrench for next time, but also a new blade as a spare, and a few other things. Then he and my wife started talking about hummingbird feeders and how to keep ants off, and he showed her to some hippy stuff we never would've found ourselves. At checkout, the "store mom" was getting something for one of the checkout girls who told us "I just love her." They were like a big, friendly family. Okay, so compare this to every trip I make to Home Depot, which is closer: can't find someone to help, get pushed off as soon as possible, always leaving just a little trepidatious that what I'm buying will actually work for what I need. I'm almost an annoyance from the lines of professional contractors that fill up the place. It may seem a little old school, but my experience at this Ace was so refreshingly different and pleasant, I may never go to a big box hardware store again. I was deeply upset today. Yesterday I gave them 4 keys to duplicate. I ended up getting only 3 back. I didn't realize it until later while at work, when I needed it. I missed out on some important business because I didn't have the key to get into my storage space. So, I returned today to seek the key. The sales reps were great with me about locating the key. Unfortunately, they found it in the trash can. How does my key end up in the trash can? Especially when I gave them 4 and I got 3 back. They gave me the key and an apology. It would have been better if they offered a gift card or coupon. That would have been better business than just an apology. I'm very disappointed. read more

I've had mixed experiences visiting this particular store. Today was just the most annoying of them all. Yes there was the usual insincere "can I help you find something" from the clerk as you walk in. Then the usual hovering of another clerk. But when you practically get ran over by an employee, whom I assume is either a manager or owner since he was wearing a different red/black polo shirt without even an acknowledgement you realize all they see you as is a dollar sign, not a person. This store is only concerned about profit and nothing more. I will never return. Figured it's been a few years since visiting the particular ACE Hardware so I would give them another chance. Nothing has changed. There is one individual who works there who is a complete ass to customers and employees. I believe he is either the store manager/owner. He berates employees right in front of customers and has no clue about customer service. He acts like your bothering him for being in his store. Well guess what? You won't be bothered by me anymore. Nothing makes me more upset than when you see an ad on tv and go the the ace hardware near you and you ask for the item advertized on tv and are told they did not buy that item. They are independent and buy what items they want. Advertised on tv should mean they have it. I just had to say I had a mostly very negative 2-part experience there going to get key copies made. The first part I had a nice guy in back at the key desk make 4 copies. Unfortunately, only 1 out of 4 worked. I realize this isn't a perfect process all the time, I have had keys made other places before. Occasional mistakes are expected. However, 1 out 4 is NOT a good score on this. So I had kept the receipt, and the cashier on the first visit warned me to bring the keys right back if they didn't work, with the receipt. I did this, came back a few days later, my first chance to get back there. I hadn't done a return at this store before, so I asked this elderly lady with the Ace uniform on near the door if she knew where I could do returns, and she practically screamed at me "AT THAT CASH REGISTER OVER THERE, WHERE ELSE?" as though I should just know her store automatically and it should be blindingly obvious to me (It's not, there's no sign over that register saying returns). Of course this pissed me off, but I was willing to let this slide at the time and just get on with my business. There was a much nicer lady at the cashier stand who started processing my return, but then of course Murphy's law, she had to ask the nasty one permission / instructions on how to finish processing my return. The old hag, whose name was Glorie, returned, and of course instantly tried to do everything she could to deny my return and give me 3 reasons why I couldn't do it and incredibly said "That's not their problem" that the keys don't work, but then also wanted me to go back there and give him a second try to make the keys. (I really didn't want to do this as failing on 3 out of 4 keys didn't give me a lot of confidence in their machine or their process). So I pointedly asked her what happens if the keys still don't work, and she said oh well that's your problem and walked away. So the young lady looked mortified and disappointed she couldn't help me and good for her, she grabbed a different manager, a young guy who approved giving me the money back. GOOD for them! However, this GLORIE hag / piece of work has lost them my business. Look, HAG. When your store messes up that badly to begin with, YOU don't get to dictate the rules. You should have fallen all over yourself apologizing for MY inconvenience of driving all the way home and back and wasting my time and gas money for something that didn't work, and not practically order and bark at me to do something futile again or that YOUR messup is MY problem. Management needs to shut her up, and get her the HELL away from customers. Stock in the back, so the old sourpuss can keep her undeserved income. She should have retired years ago. I will also be delivering this feedback to the regional management team. I further want to say that I really can't stand this group of people in retail who for some reason make every single customer the enemy. You have NO BUSINESS working in those jobs. When you walk into Ace Hardware, in less than 10 seconds someone with say "Hello," introduce themselves, and ask you what they can help you with. If you need help, they will walk you around the small, but efficiently organized store to find what you need. Oops, they don't have it? Well, let them order it for you! My most recent venture into Ace was because my sprinkler timer died. I had bought it at the same store about a year before and now it didn't work. Well after some diagnosis by me and then by Radio Shack (that's in another review) I knew the problem was with the power cord. Initially the sales person tried to help me find a replacement cord, which they didn't have in stock, then he checked the catalog, it appears the manufacturer didn't sell the cord separately, so, he went to the shelf, pulled off the same sprinkler timer, opened the box and gave (yes, I said gave) me the power cord. After I left, wondering, once again, why I ever go to the orange or blue stores, I realized I didn't have a receipt on me, the sales person totally took my word for it that I had purchased the timer there and totally went above and beyond the call of duty. I've had a number of experiences at Ace that has made me a loyal customer, but my favorite was a couple of years ago. My then middle-school-aged son had a science fair project he wanted to do. He had the idea but wasn't sure about all the implementation details. So I knew just the place to to go. We went to Ace Hardware. We were in the PVC pipe department and a sales person came to ask us if we needed help. I explained the situation, then my son explained his experiment plans and the ideas of what he was trying the build. The sales person helped my son refine his ideas, helped him shop for the right parts and even made some most excellent building tips. We took all our supplies home and my son put together his builds and did his experiments and the whole project was a success. Ace manages to maintain that small town hardware store level of customer service in the middle of suburbia. Way to go Ace! read more

When it comes down to home improvement stores this Ace is hands down the best. They greet you as soon as you walk in, ask you what they can help with and direct you right to it. They are always way friendly and helpful. They may not have the biggest selection and lowest price sometimes but I'll support a locally owned store with a friendly staff any day over crappy Home Depot. I will NEVER shop at Ace Hardware again. Even though the store at 17190 E Iliff Ave, Aurora, CO 80013 has a great selection of hard-to-find items that I use daily and the location is extremely convenient for me, my experience with on of the employees has infuriated me to the point I will have to resort to Home Depot and Lowes. I am working on a restoration project and needed some electrical supplies. I've been a handyman for over 50 years and I know exactly what I need. The teenager who greeted me would not let me look or browse the electrical supplies at my leisure. He peppered me with questions about my needs and would not leave me to shop. When I moved from the extension cords to the switches, he followed closely behind me and continued to question me incessantly. To put it coarsely, he was "up my rear end" the entire time I tried to find my items. Either he thought me an idiot who needed the guidance of a teenager to complete my project or he thought I was going to shoplift. Neither is the case. I actually ENJOY browsing and looking for the optimal items that will enable me to complete my projects. I often find things that I had not thought of just by exploring the available items. But the employee who pestered me today completely ruined my shopping experience with his smothering and constant questioning. Home Depot has less selection and lower quality, and Lowes is quite far from my home, but their employees are available when I need help but content to let me browse. They will be my only destinations for hardware from this day forward. read more

Tired of being treated like a criminal. You walk in and they hover over you. Not for service, this is some of the rudest help I've met in years. I have been coming to this store (off and on) for a good portion of my adult life. Moved back to the neighborhood 6 years ago and noticed a distinct downturn. On a recent visit,i used one of their grocery carts to carry out a bag of soil and some plants, they made me wait to take things out until someone could escort me.i told them I didn't need help but they insisted. Kid came up front eventually, we walked out and he stood there watching me load my car. I commented to him that if they insisted he come, he could at least help. His response was "Oh no, I'm just here to make sure we get the cart back." I decided right then that the only time I would use this store was when it was too inconvenient to go elsewhere. So that situation arose, where I needed a stud for a car repair and, as usual, the rude older guy snatched my old bolt out of my hand and when I insisted on getting items myself, he insisted on visibly recounting the items I picked out and double checking the prices I wrote down. Rude but I could deal with it. Today, once again it was easier to visit this place thank run to home depot. To buy a $3 drill bit requires waiting for some one to unlock them. I chose (stupid me) to go ahead and buy the $20 dollar set. The jerk of a clerk wouldn't even hand it to me to walk 10 feet to check out. Insisted that he had to carry it to prevent theft! When I complained to the manager, her response was not even apologetic, they simply don't care. Don't be fooled into thinking the kid working there is hovering over your shoulder to help, he is simply there to make sure you don't steal. read more

If I could give zero I would! Let me start off by saying I used to love this store. I have shopped at this ace for a long time. This time was different. I witnessed a manager who was laughing at a customer that was stuttering. As I set back and watch I was horrified. Never have I seen such a disrespect for a person with a disability. After the customer left mad and let me tell you he had every right to be I asked who the man was and to my shock it was a manager named Aaron. After finding out that the manager was the one who displayed this horrific behavior I put the items I was going to purchase and left the store! I have not been in here and not been asked if I was doing ok or needed anything, a huge change from a Home Depot or Lowes "big box" store where you cannot seem to find anyone. The reason I am giving it 4 stars is that the selection is somewhat small, has most of the things you may need but lumber and their electric tool selection is either nonexistent or very limited. I ordered some Yeti tumblers as Christmas gifts from their website and had them shipped to my local store. They arrived quicker than expected and the store called me to notify me they had arrived. When I stopped in to pick them up, I also explored the aisles as I have never been in an Ace store before. The store is clean and the employees are VERY helpful. I must have been asked 5 times if I needed help. This is a nice option for many common home needs. I like that they offer a rewards program and became a member of it online. "Like going to your neighbor" Maybe if you live in Cherry Hills! Ace is the convenience store of hardware stores. Went in to get some paint samples. The samples were Benjamin Moore samples. My fault.. while there is signage for Valspar and Clark and Kensington at 4.99 a sample (which is more than samples at Lowes or Home Depot ) There is no signage for the Benjamin Moore samples which are $6.99 each. Now this is not huge but when you are buying several it gets spendy. Would have been nice if I was told this in advance and or it was posted some where. A little deceiving While the customer service is great their prices are high not just for paint samples but every thing else I have bought there. Paying for the convenience. Just moved into this neighborhood and I needed to get keys made and they had up a sign for keys that said $4.99 each. I selected a key that said $3.99 when I tried to explain that to the cashier she seemed completely indifferent and so I asked someone else and he said that the sign by the keys I selected isn't accurate because they have to print that sign, but that the other sign that said they were more expensive is correct just to make it easier on them.
