Update 11/8/20: see comments on my personal Facebook page…read more(Maureen Holmes) for comments on Robin Boyce after posting my review there. Unfortunately I am not the only one who has endured a bad experience with her. MH I warn anyone who will listen away from this unethical business and owner Robin Boyce. I had the misfortune to be her client and endure her careless, unprofessional, dishonest and ultimately abusive and vulgar treatment. My "custom kitchen" arrived without the custom elements and with a grossly oversized refrigerator. The kitchen designer blames someone else for a major kitchen error and refuses to fix it! (See photos) I had the exact same experience with the shutters and the custom stair-runner I ordered from her. They were both delivered with errors and missing parts, and Design West has done NOTHING to correct its errors. This is the worst experience I've ever had with another human being, period. I never received an apology on any mistake I swear to God. That's when I realized too late I had hired the wrong person. Robin Boyce/Design Center West scammed me by promising professional results and delivering dirt. Robin Boyce then turned verbally abusive when confronted with her easily disproved lies. (I have all documentation to prove my charges.) This last point deserves special mention. When I expressed my dismay at the errors, delays and lack of accountability, her demeanor shifted immediately from friendly to combative and borderline violent. It was a shock to learn the owner wasn't just a sleaze but mentally unhinged too. When I confronted her in her store after she ignored my contractor's emails and texts, she began screaming profanities at me while hurling insults about my appearance and character, which I presumed was an intimidation tactic. That felt sickening, but it worsened when she came at me with her arm pulled back as if to throw a punch, but thankfully she stopped herself before landing her fist in my face. I feel certain the only thing that stopped her was a possible assault charge. I would feel sorry for Ms Boyce if she wasn't a thief, and if her emotional instability didn't manifest in such an ugly manner. But no mental state excuses her dishonesty, mentally healthy or not. Not a word of this review is hyperbole. I lost thousands of dollars and was blindsided by a venomous verbal assault because I had the temerity to call out Robin Boyce on her mendacity and fraud. I could provide a colorful litany of her actions, but suffice it to say that it involved a lot of obscene finger, hip and hand gestures. Incidentally, her staff just sat there like dummies the entire time and let it all happen. Apparently they don't have an issue working for such a repulsive woman. Prior to my dealings with her, Robin was verbally abusive to my contractor on multiple occasions as well when he asked her about delayed deliverables. Following is an example of one the few correspondences between him and Robin that isn't littered with her F-bombs: "Shut up. Stop talking. Don't tell me what to do. Its not Maureen... its you. I'm surprised guys take your mouth, and the way you talk down to others; I suspect you've been punched a few times." This is the first---and I hope last--bad review I ever had to write. Let this brutally honest review serve as a public service announcement to warn others away from this troublemaker. Do not hire Design Center West. You will pay a premium for sloppy, mediocre results, and the owner will curse you when you express your dissatisfaction. This has been a yearlong nightmare that only ended after I hired someone else to fix all of her mistakes. Caveat emptor!

Even during the pandemic she has been on top of things and instructing me to get things ordered prior to shipment delays. She and her team have been responsible, proactive, and truly professional. They are communicating with my contractor and his team and his cabinet installer told me it was such a pleasure working with them he would like to do more jobs with them. Any mistakes (Fedex dropped a vanity and it cracked) were handled quickly and replaced at no cost to me. Her attention to detail is incredible. Additionally, she was very focused on saving me money and making sure I was not buying things I did not need. It has been a true pleasure working with Robin and her team again. I cannot say enough good things about them!

The item they delivered, however, was too deep and did not fit the space, actually blocking one of the entrances to our unit. We also had told them that the doors had to be reversed to open on the right, but that was not how it was delivered. When advising them of the problems, Hudson asked if we had checked the dimensions of the unit they recommended; to which I replied, "Did you check the dimensions we gave YOU?" No reply. When I asked why the installers didn't call Hudson to alert them that the refrigerator was blocking the door, I was told that they "just deliver and set up." When we told them that the doors were not reversed as we had asked, they told us that they could not be reversed; despite their telling us originally that they could. Despite this being clearly their fault, when we asked them to take it back, Hudson said that we would be responsible for a 30% restocking fee. We had considered going to Small Claims Court to resolve this, and we are confident that we would have won; however, we decided that it was not worth our time to save $250. They eventually took back the refrigerator and charged the 30% restocking fee. Having spent 30 years in senior management for large and small retail companies, I can say with conviction that this was extremely poor customer service and one of the worst experiences I have ever had as a consumer. I do not like leaving negative reviews, particularly for small box stores, but given their indifference to us, I feel compelled to call out Hudson Appliance for this terrible experience.

We bought our house 2 years ago and have had to put about 30K in repairs into a flipped house…read more Sure it looked all shiny and new but the work that was done was cheap at best. I don't even know where to start but our biggest expense by far was the cheap plumbing fixes that were put in place. The tub was not set in concrete so it creaks and rocks side to side when you stand in it. The toilet flange was installed outside instead of inside the pipe which lead to a sewage leak and clean up including replacing the entire floor and sub floor in the main bathroom. It turns out that they hadn't even installed concrete board and that the tiles were glued (GLUED!) to the floor with no thin-set. The main sewer line was never checked despite the enormous tree in the front yard, turns out that it was broken and the tree roots had grown through the line causing yet a second back up of sewage into the house. This time they came out the lowest plumbing point in the master bedroom and the entire room and floor had to be gutted. The plumbing in this room turned out to also be an issue and we had to redo the setting for the toilet and the outflow pipes for the sink which were slowly leaking. We found evidence of even more water damage and mildew and mold that had never been treated. They simply slapped a second layer of dry wall over the first and called it a day. The finish on the plaster throughout the house and subsequent paint job are also horrendous. We actually paid to have it redone. The trim in some areas didn't extend the entire length of the walls and the doors were not properly hung. The tile floor theme continued into the kitchen where tiles started popping up within weeks of moving in, they also were installed improperly. The first basement was suspiciously painted with "unknown" history of water. We had water day 1 and had to install a full perimeter drain and sunk pump to stop the constant water inflow. The outside of the house is another whole story. The previous owners appeared to be hoarders, but this guys solution was not to clean the trash up but rather to try to bury it. We have random plastic bags that have emerged filled with decaying trash, plastic in every variety and tin, forks, you name it. We also have dug up 17 plus tires since we've been here, they also emerge slowly from their burial location. The deck was installed and at best is shotty. It looks nice and was one of the reasons that we loved the house but it is not built squarely at all. The underside of the deck has supporting joists installed at odd angles and you can see where boards were not nailed down along the joist at all. We are stuck in a house where something fails on a weekly basis. Do not use this company you will regret it!!!!

Dex by Terra

This March (2016), we decided to do a major overhaul of our pool and pool area. I contacted Dex by…read moreTerra and another major stoneworks competitor. I wanted to replace about 1,000 sq ft of poured concrete decking with a nicer decking and cantilevered coping. And, I also wanted to replace a 3'-high wood retaining wall and pool house steps with a stone wall and steps. The wall traces around our pool house with garden plantings between the wall and the pool house. Dex by Terra won our business for two very important reasons: o First, Joe Medeiros from DBT, who is a landscape architect, presented a design plan that wowed us. Joe has an easy old-school manner, is a good listener and has great ideas and is good at explaining why some ideas are good and some aren't based on his years of experience. The plan contours of the decking and stone wall were absolutely beautiful. Joe suggested lowering the 30" height of the retaining wall to make it a sitting wall and added a beautiful wave to the wall that wrapped toward the deep end of the pool. Joe also designed an arc'ed bump-out near the back slope of our property that looks out on a vista of conservation land. A really nice touch. The competitor's plan, which we saw first, had no excitement to it, and I had begun to wonder if I really wanted to spend $30,000-$40,000 on a major decking renovation (in addition to $25,000 in swimming pool renovation and equipment/electrical upgrades). o Second, the competitor does not do natural stone work, focusing on Techo-Bloc and other manufactured products. While those products have come a long way, and can look like natural stone, as my wife and I thought more about the pool area, we gravitated toward natural stone for both the decking and the wall. We wanted a stone that doesn't cook your feet, that feels smooth, not rough, underfoot and on your hands and doesn't grab your bathing suit when you sit on the coping and dangle your legs in the pool. And, we wanted something that will still look like new when we sell the house in 10-15 years. We ruled out bluestone, which is beautiful, because it get too hot and is too rough. Joe Medeiros and I discussed travertine for the decking, and the more I read up on it, even though it added to the cost, the more travertine became the clear solution for us. We visited DBT's office/showroom in Hudson, and settled on travertine for the decking, and natural stone with travertine capstone for sitting on the stone wall. How well did DBT deliver? Absolutely stunning! We are ecstatic! Marco Resendes served as the project manager from DEX. Mark was responsive, helpful and resourceful. He came to me with issues as soon as they arose so the masons could keep the work moving. For example, the travertine decking and pool coping, now a few inches higher than the original concrete decking, would abut the last step of the stairs to our wood deck at too high a height for safety purposes, so he needed my OK to increase the downslope of the travertine). And, when I asked Mark what we could do to hide the ugly cinder block foundation of the pool house, exposed when the original 30" wood retaining wall was replaced with the 20" stone sitting wall, he recommended that his masons could create a stucco look which they did - just great work. The DBT team did the demolition work of the original concrete decking, the wood retaining wall, a concrete walkway and bushes in two-three days. The team, led by Jeffrey, were fast, efficient and got tons of material loaded into a dumpster and trucked away. Jeffrey is a pro with the excavator and a good guy. The stone wall masons worked fast as did the team that graded and prepped the decking area with sand and gravel, installed the coping stone along the pool perimeter and laid out the travertine in a beautiful pattern. They are all experienced craftsmen, led by Reuben who knows his stuff. Were there any negatives? None. But, like any major project, it's important to be there as the work gets done. So, for example, the stone wall team began to build the wall by laying the stone in a horizontal fashion when I had asked for the stones to be assembled with a vertical pattern. By being there, I was able to correct that almost immediately. My opinion is that the homeowner has a daily responsibility to keeping tabs on the work as it's performed to ensure you get what you want. The timing: First spoke with Joe Medeiros in early April. Signed a contract on May 20. Demolition occurred at the end of May. There was some wait time as the swimming pool team from Farrell Pool did their renovation work. And some wait time for the DBT team as they came off another project. DBT finished their work by July 13. So, overall, about a 6-week duration from the start of demolition. That's pretty good, especially since they've got a lot of jobs going and there is competition for resources. Kudos to the entire team - highest recommendation!!!

To anyone that is considering Dex by Terra (or has recently hired them for a project), I have one…read morepiece of advice for you: RUN AWAY AND DONT LOOK BACK We hired Dex By Terra to perform a backyard transformation (in 2024) following the install of our pool in Framingham, MA. The design phase, led by Joe, was wonderful. EVERY SINGLE THING THAT TOOK PLACE POST-DESIGN WAS TERRIBLE. We opted for a stamped concrete design, which was our first mistake. Every single person from DEX who has been at our house honestly has no idea what they are doing in regards to stamped concrete. When you look at reviews, every positive review is for non-concrete patio's. When it comes to stamped concrete... anything that could go wrong went wrong. 1.) Stamped upper patio area was completed first. Color was wrong. It looked like someone had poured curry powder all over my patio. Luckily, they were able to jackhammer it out and replace 2.) Stamped pool deck - after one winter, there was an erosion that took place all over the patio (think little white specks everywhere). They refused to repour concrete and opted to fix with a stain/sealer. Needless to say, while it did improve the white spots, we are in summer number 3, and it looks even worse now. In addition, the lines of the stamping, drains, and immediate border around pool are all not straight. 3.) Masonry work was shoddy all over entire patio. Big gaps, stones falling out of place, allowing rodents to make new homes. 4.) Supervision is an afterthought. Our project manager Delia wasnt actually managing anything. People would show up whenever, without any prior notification. Questions requesting specific dates and times for workers were not answered. General job site cleanliness was a total DISASTER - with items getting broken (all of our solar lamps), landscaping being damaged (from moving furniture into landscaping while working on patio), sealer hardening at bottom of pool causing white marks, and overall general sloppiness in terms of keeping areas of house clean (like siding, trim, and windows) while they worked. 5.) Zero accountability. I asked numerous times for the owners of the business to come on-site to see the horrendous work that they performed. Joe, Delia, and Tommy (head of ops) came out. Joe agreed the work was sloppy and terrible looking. Tommy didn't have a clue - he could have been a guy they grabbed at dunks to serve as "head of ops" for all we know. Now we are on year 3, they are still doing some work with the same problems and same lack of attention to detail and lack of respect of our time/money/house. In discussing with my wife, we are going to have to bring in actual professionals at some point down the line to remediate the mess that Dex by Terra have caused. Again - if you are considering hiring Dex by Terra for any work, I would run as far away as you can from them. Atrocious company, atrocious support, atrocious attention to detail, and absolutely ZERO accountability. I offer anyone the opportunity to come to my house to see the quality of their work first-hand. Know what you are getting yourself into and know there are better companies out there.
