You know I don't want to trade in the patchwork corduroys, sage sticks, and three-leaf hat for a briefcase, suit jacket, and courtgirlshoes. See, most superheroes are like a working stiff in regular real, and abandon the briefcase for the cape. I go the other way. I leave my purple cape (fastened by a lipgloss glow ring) at home and become Courtgirl during the week. Except Courtgirl is the working stiff with the suit and the briefcase. If there's one thing that hippies and working stiffs alike had in common this week, it was battling the elements outside. The salty snowy slush affects everyone, especially shoes. Yes, shoes are people, too. I don't buy expensive clothes and shoes, so I was extra pissed when I scratched up my new Sofft ankle boots. They were out of my price range, but I got them anyway because I knew they would be great for running through the pedway to court. But of course, I precisely scratched them up and they had a strand of huge digs cut in the front toe. I found myself with fifteen minutes to spare between court calls and thought I would see what Ace could do for me. Everyday I round the corners of the pedway and see the sign "SHOE CLINIC" and I figured it was as good a time as any. I am amazed by the work they did on my courtshoes! The owner of the shop spread some thin glue in the flapping leather bits, then the guy Walter used this giant bin of black shoe polish to fix it a million times over. There were a bunch of applications of show cream and polish applied with varying brushes and rags. It was $9 including the shine. I have to say, it felt extremely strange to get a shoe shine, but I highly HIGHLY recommend it. It was almost as great as getting a pedicure. The way they work the cloth over my feet felt like a massage, right through the courtshoes! I read the paper that was kindly left on the way-raised-up seat and pretended I was a famous business man in a train station, and not a non-famous courtgirl in a pedway. danananana *bam* danananana *pow!* dananana *~!zap!~* ACE Show Clinic... to the rescue! ...and yeah I did get in trouble with pedway security for taking that pic. ...and yeah I did win my Motion that morning. ... and yeah everyone else's shoes were super slushy and unshined. read more

Yelp (and Katie B) came through for me. I had this fairly new pair of MBT's, which I love, and which I'd managed to get some grease on while in London (see my review of Kappacasein). I'd tried several home remedies, to no avail. I felt doomed to many months of peering down at my own carelessness, until I finally thought to pull up my trusty yelp, to see if there was a recommended shoe repair/shine place near my office. My luck, the closest turned out to be great. Melvin, though pessimistic at the start of his very professional study of my shoe predicament, really came through. At first, he explained his pessimism by pointing out that the white colored stitching on my brown shoes required a clear polish, so as not to muck up the look of the stitching with brown polish. Though he opined that he could improve on the situation, he did not think he could completely vanquish the multiple grease spots dotting the complete top of my left shoe. Disappointed by the assessment, I encouraged him to carry on. Now, I could go on and on about Melvin's heroic efforts, the multiple shoe stuff applications, both by his bare hands and by cloth, and the towel buffings, and the brushings. He worked tirelessly for a good 20 to 25 minutes. But, suffice to say, my MBT's now look absolutely new, and there is not a hint of grease stain to be seen. For the $4 charge (and a very handsome tip), I now have a completely resurrected pair of $265 shoes, and I am happy to recommend Ace Shoe Clinic as a terrific downtown place to get your shoes taken care of. read more

Bought a pair of shoes at Knee Deep Vintage. They were adorable, but one heel was missing a tip and both had insoles coming off the toe portion. Shoe Clinic guy was like What did you do?!?!!!! Ummm it came like that. Why where you buy?? Dude, what's with the 3rd degree? How did I lose the heel tip, I hit some guy with it because he was asking too many questions and it fell off. He didn't jot down any notes so I was kinda worried that he would forget to do something. Anyways for $8, he did everything I asked. I thought I saw a new scratch, but it turned out to be a hair-fine piece of shoe glue that easily peeled off. He was pretty nice when I picked them up, but maybe it was because I had money in my hand. read more

I never had a professional shoe shine in my memory until I stumbled upon Ace Shoe Clinic while renewing my IL Drivers License across the hall. The main reason I didn't get my shoes shined sooner was I didn't like sitting out in the middle of a train station. Ace is real intimate and private and I like that! Personal service at its best! Now, I'm a regular customer. I am very happy, the guys are nice.... It's relaxing and you leave with your shoes clean and sparkling! Love it. Ace also makes keys, repairs all leather and will even polish your brief case or purse! Excellent discovery! ... Highly recommended ! read more

Brilliant. They resuscitated a pair of leather winter boots, which after 3 seasons was covered with blotches and spots and was looking super ragged. For 13$ the guys completely changed the look of it. They darkened the color of the shoe a bit, and its super shiny. Though I am not a fan of the new darker color or the wonderful shine, I'm just glad to be able to wear this out again. Also I'm sure if I had said that I didn't want it shined as much, they would have taken that into account. I had another shoe shined as well later in the week. Highly recommend it. read more

I never had leather shoes or a shoe shine before and I used to always pass this place by going on lunch and break. One gloomy day it finally happened it rained, I felt the pain my first leather shoes felt, like me leaving my first child wet and cold in the rain. I decided to give this place a try, nervous being a shy guy myself, I walked in and asked if they can shine and clean my shoes with all the water blots and wound on it. The workers made me feel like a king, the worker said please step up sir and treated my shoes like he would his first leather son. I felt spoiled and special, this being my first experience getting my shoes shined and now I'm afraid of going anywhere else because the service this place gave. I went out of that place with my first leather shoes looked like he was born again. I have been going to this place ever since. The owner is nice the workers called him " Mr. Park " and for every 9 or 10 shines you get one free! I take the train downtown now if I ever need any repairs or shine done to my shoe. This is what a man spa must feel like I will for sure bring my future leather children there again. read more

best shoe clinic around. I've seen that there are 2 other review things of this location with the wrong address, this is the only one that is worth going to. Best service all around, the owner definately can fix your shoe right on time for really cheap prices, I'll most certainly be going there again. The shoe shine is also nice, the whole place is just so friendly and they will get your service just right. Make sure this is the place you go to, you will not regret it! read more

This place has never been worse. It is the worst of worst. I let them deal with my boot that had a tear and they made it worse. Couple weeks later I went again and this time I let them repair my leather boots and they lost it. I now go to Ace Shoe clinic 55 E Monroe St in Chicago, IL 60603 it has reasonable prices and they do it on time and it looks brand new. read more

This place was horrible. I really don't know how they are still in business and they in fact should not be. I had a perfectly fine pair of boots that just needed the heel tip replaced. They charged me $8. After one wear, one of the tips fell off. I brought them back in asking that they be fixed. The guy tried sanding the heel tip for 10 minutes, brought them back out and said he couldn't do it and that I had to take them elsewhere. He said he didn't know whether anyone could fix it, but he couldn't. I told him that he ruined my boots and that I wanted my money back. I didn't even ask to be reimbursed for the shoes, which I could have. He said he would only give me $4 because the other boot was perfectly fine. As if that helped my situation at all. No responsibility for anything that he may have done wrong or any real offer to help. I'm never going back and suggest no one else does either. read more
