Nobody answers the phone! Very frustrating when you attempt to find out if even still in service.

I brought two pair of cowboy boots to him for new heel caps (Black rubber caps). Simple task. I specifically asked if the new caps will be same color and thickness and he said yes. Picked the boots up, different color heel caps and almost twice as thick. Changed the whole angle of the boot and sent them off to the manufacturer for repair. he has no idea what he is doing and should not be in business. He is a disaster and A complete waist of money. You have to pay when you drop the shoes off. Found out WHY! You would refuse to pay when you picked up due to the horrid work. Lovely pair of formal shoes - worn twice. Lost a lift on one shoe and had a side come out of the sole. Wanted the lift replaced and the side reinserted into the sole and glued. He RUINED my shoes. Satin shoes (formal) and glue all over both shoes! Where the side was reinserted in the sole, it was puckered and uneven. Also, someone apparently wore the shoes, as the soles were worn down to bare leather! Gorgeous shoes that I cannot replace as they don't make this style any more. I am heart sick! This shop USED to do good work, I've used them for many years. The new owner is NOT a good shoe repair person. read more

I needed some heavy-duty sewing, canvas and straps, and asked if I could wait. (10 minute job at most) ~ Quoted one week yet he was not working when I stopped in. I got the feeling that he did not want to do the job, instead of saying no I was 'blown off' with a long time frame instead of just saying no. I took 5 pairs of shoes with various issues, some had stitching undone others needed heel replacement. I dropped them off, pointed out the problem areas and requested that each shoe be cleaned. There was a huge language barrier that necessitated me repeating each request several time over, but I received my shoes two weeks and -$110 later in beyond poor condition. Every repair had visible glue over the outside, one of the heels hadn't even been fixed, and the stitch job made one of my nice white shoes unrecognizable from the other. Nothing was cleaned nor polished, and I was refused a refund. Thousands of dollars in high end sneakers ruined, would leave zero stars if I could. read more

RUINED BOOTS. I just got home with a pair of ruined boots. Took them to Ace Shoe Repair to get heels replaced. Got boots back and now the seams are all torn up. It looks like he dragged them across a concrete floor while he was working on them. Seams on both boots are now torn and frayed. THIS THE WORST SERVICE EVER. Showed frayed seams to guy at counter and he just shrugged. read more

I have these quite expensive combat boots I bought in Austria that have become my workhorse for almost 10 years now. I never needed any repair until the leather strip that covers the back of the heel started peeling off and also the soles of the heel are starting to wear off. Mr. Ace glued the strips right there in front of me, and like magic, my boots looks new again! While the soles are irreplaceable (I guess I have to go to Vienna again to purchase new ones, if I'm lucky they haven't closed), I may still have 2-3 years of wear with these boots! I was tearing up while walking back to my car because Mr. Ace didn't charge me anything. He said it was an easy fix. All I can say is that he was one of the few kind people I've met in my life. I will definitely bring my most precious shoes here, especially, the ones just waiting to be loved again! read more

Don't go here. Original owner who was amazing must have sold the business. Brought in a pair if boots and sandals. There was glue everywhere...which took me hours to clean off. The sandals needed the sole replaced and replied in places. Everything is crooked. And he just replied old soles and didn't replace. At a cost of 38.00, which had to be paid in advance. He doesn't understand English very well so he didn't understand why I was upset with service. Never again...time to find a new place. read more

I have tried this place twice. Worst place ever. Never on time, and then when you get them you cannot wear them. He put cuts all in me bottom of my dress shoes. Then he put Viabram soles on Johnson and Murphy shoes. Cuts, glue, late, and then not polished. I said "I thought you were going to polish them?" He grabbed them and through polish on them and gave them back. He makes you pay first because his work is terrible. If you want some crappy combat boots or something, he might be okay. If you want to put soles on a good pair of dress shoes this guy is clueless. So he ruined my shoes, I offered to give them to him for my money back, but he refused. I am an over tipper for bad service at a restaurant just the way I am, but this guy is either blind or crooked. He has no competition so he gets away with it. Don't go here. In the end, my sandals were repaired, but that's the only reason this shop gets more than a 1-star review. I dropped my sandals off on a Tuesday to have the elastic on the clasp replaced. I paid $20 (I double checked that this was the full amount and not a deposit) and the lady told me they be ready in a week. I came back to pick them up the next Tuesday and the repair hadn't even been started yet, so the man told me to come back that Saturday and they would be ready. I ended up not being able to come pick them up until today, a full week after he told me they would be ready and the REPAIR STILL WASN'T FINISHED. He had me wait while he finished sewing the elastic in place, and then tried to charge me $20 again because he said I hadn't paid yet. I told him I had already paid but he insisted I hadn't. He had already handed the sandals back to me, so I just left the store with him yelling behind me. It's really fortunate for him that I had already prepaid because i don't think I would have given any money for the crappy service from this shop. read more

The original Mr. Ace is gone, and his replacement does substandard work at his best! Unfortunately for now in my opinion, you would do best to avoid getting work done on your shoes at Ace Shoe Repair - until the original Mr. Ace returns because his substitute's craftsmanship is most unsatisfactory indeed. He appears to be the gentleman Dry Cleaner located next door and not an actual shoe repairman because his work is not reflective of much skill or talent when it comes to shoes. For over 10 years or more I have been taking my shoes to get reheeled and resoled by the kind elderly gentleman at Ace Shoe Repair at Seminole Square. For those many years the cobbler always did a fine job, although as the years progressed so did the wait time to get my shoes back. Him being a one-man operation, he was always busy and overflowing with work - and I did not mind waiting the extra week or two. Starting this summer, it appeared Mr. Ace was experiencing a bout of Pneumonia and was not well at all; his shop was closed several days when I came by to get some work done. When I last saw him and left a couple of pairs of Cole Hann loafers with him, he mentioned he was struggling with his health and so understandably I agreed to wait an additional week or so. I ended up waiting an additional month or more and discovered (apparently) that the gentleman running the dry cleaner next door - was now doing "shoes!" This new person, a man of few words to begin with, only had one thing to say to me - "come back next week." After two times of this I came back to discovering him working on my shoes right at that moment, and again his refrain was "come back early next week." I finally got both pairs back today and am in utter disappointment with what is clearly unfortunate workmanship. On one pair along the edge of the half soles they were separated from the shoe. On the other pair it looks as though he squirted a lot of adhesive, and it is visibly apparent it is coming apart. There were small slops of adhesive on the side of the shoe as well. This gentleman then proceeded to jack up the price of my bill by 20 dollars more than what Mr. Ace had written down. When I pointed this discrepancy out to him the man just said the price was now "20 dollars more." As I tried to speak with him further, he simply dismissed me a wave and goodbye. I don't know what feeling was worse; getting my sloppily repaired shoes back or the fact that Mr. Ace may never be coming back. Either way - the current workmanship being done by this dry cleaner pseudo cobbler - is lacking indeed. A sincere get well soon goes out to the original Mr. Ace! Your customers miss you! read more

This was my first time bringing shoes in for repair. I was impressed- on time, beautiful new sole added to my boots, and he replaced the sole of both shoes even though only one needed it (so they would match). I highly recommend, it's much better to repair shoes than to throw an old pair away that could be fixed! read more

Be aware, this shop is under new ownership! I've had multiple good results under the previous owner but the new owner I will never recommend and never go back to. This is my first negative review on Yelp but this really got me going! I took him two pair of Bass Weejuns for half-soles. I've done this several times before on my other Weejuns but these two pair were still on the original soles. My first clue should have been that the price was about 50% more than my previous visits and, or course, that there was a new proprietor at the counter. The old owner never asked to be paid in advance, though I always did, thinking it was only fair. This new guy charged me before the work was done, which is understandable but now I know why. My wife picked up the shoes for me and as soon as I got home I looked them over. One pair was properly done but the other had one of the two shoes done okay but the other had had the entire sole removed and replaced with a half-sole simply glued to the remaining leather shoe. That's an awful shoe repair, turning a welt into a cement, and especially when each shoe of a pair is soled differently. I went back with the bad pair and he offered to hack the sole off the shoe that had been properly done and make it like the other. I said of course not. I told him he had ruined perfectly good shoes and now I had no use for them. Communication was difficult but eventually he gave me back the $35 I had spent to half-sole this pair and I simply gave him the shoes since they were of no use to me. So, I'm not out the money but I am out the shoes which for decades I've had resoled at least once, and often twice, before chucking them in the trash. These $130 shoes were only good to me through the original soles. I wish Bass would still take their own shoes back for re-soles like they used to, but we're stuck with hack repairs like this. I can't recommend this shop to anyone after this, or at least don't pay for your repair until you see the result. And don't give him any shoes you really care about, or you may get them back in a useless condition. If anyone knows a shoe repair shop that does old-school work, please let me know. I'm still wearing all-leather shoes with all-leather soles, and just think they should be good beyond the first soles. Again, I'm not out money. I wasn't defrauded. I just got such poor service from the new owner that my shoes were ruined beyond any repair. read more

i was only in town for 2 goddamn days and this wonderful man fixed my favourite pair of old brown shoes. george harrison woulda been proud to wear em. he slapped on some beautiful cowhide 'neath em and i'm walking on damned sunshine. if sunshine was meat, skinned, tanned. some sort of messed up leather-sun-tanning situation under my soles. This is the only place I will take my boots in Charlottesville. The owner appears to work alone, but he always has my boots ready as scheduled. He takes good care of my leather footwear: pressing out scuffs, polishing, and waterproofing. He's also very reasonably priced. I will continue to bring my boots here at the beginning and end of each season. I have faith that he is extending the longevity of my boots! read more

I have taken shoes and boots to Jeffrey at Ace Shoe Repair for the last few years. As others have written, Jeffrey is professional, efficient, and one amazing shoe maven. 2 days ago, I drove into town wearing a favorite pair (very old) of boots and had a lunch date scheduled. When I arrived in town and began to walk from my car, I noticed that one of the heels on the boot was loose, as I continued to walk, the heel further separated from the shaft, finally completely falling off. My socked foot was rubbing the ground by the time I arrived in front of Ace Shoe Repair. I had 75 minutes before my lunch date. I had no idea if the heel was repairable. Jeffrey said he could fix it, but it would take a week. "No," I said, I don't have another pair of shoes and I live out of town. "Okay, but you'll have to wait," he said. I sat down. He stopped all his other work to repair my boot. It took 35 minutes, during which, other customers were dropping off, picking up. I watched him: he was diligent, focused, determined. I asked if he thought he could really fix it. The whole bottom had disintegrated; to my untrained eye, it appeared hopeless. He said, "You'll walk out of here with both boots on." 35 minutes later, he was true to his word. I was speechless. 3 new customers were now in the shop, with 2 waiting to enter outside. I could have run behind the counter to hug him, but didn't want to embarrass him. I had expected the bill to be at least $45-60, given the amount of time he spent and that it was certainly a "rush job!" "What do I owe you, Jeffrey?" He looked at me, and said, "Nothing, it's okay." "WHAT??" I thought he was joking. He was not. Jeffrey at Ace Shoe Repair Shop is as good as it gets! He is a prince among men. GO THERE.
