I am really surprised Ace Sporting Goods has such a low star rating. My husband and I have been going to Ace for many years and we have bought several handguns from them. Ace is my favorite gun store around Pittsburgh. The staff is very knowledgeable and willing to take the time to explain things to you and show you multiple guns. Their selection of handguns is huge. And a plus is their prices on guns are a little less than other stores. I do agree that sometimes their staff can be very difficult to speak to because they are always SO busy and you may have to wait a little bit till one of the sales guys are free. This place has good selection and usually a good price because it is located outside of Allegheny County. I have done business with them before. One simply has two choices to consider upon entering Ace. One must either choose waiting for long periods of time or not being served at all. I understand that some stores have a climate of buying and friendliness. The climate here is you will wait unless you arrive exactly at store opening, or you are carrying a large item for sale. The customer service here is below par, and the culture here is to be ignored. Perhaps the volume of the store is so high, management does not care about customer service. If I went there today, stood at the counter and didn't make myself very known, I wonder how long I could stand there without being noticed... Mind you, I'm a large man. I recently started a hobby of target shooting and went to Ace for their recommendation in regard to a quality 22 caliber pistol . The sales team there is extremely knowledgeable and they gave me the pluses and minuses of 10 different options! I had so much information that I had to think about it overnight and return the next day to make a purchase. I visited a target range over the weekend and was extremely happy with my 22 . The staff at Ace are very knowledgeable and can help a novice like me or an experienced enthusiast in regard to all types of sporting goods.Five Stars ! read more

Been there numerous times and the "pitchmen" are always in a hurry to break the ice, if you're not spending a lot of money... they walk away! I had multiple needs and when he didn't have a particular Magazine I was searching for (cz) he just told me No and walked away? Maybe if I had a small hat he would have catered to me? I realize they have expenses, I take valuable time and travel 60 miles one way to look at their stuff and I feel cheated because of a poor employee. I recently visited Ace Sporting Goods on the recommendation of 2 close friends to trade in (for purchase) a number of firearms which I acquired due to my fathers death on Fathers day. Being from out of State and not having the luxury of time to sell the guns privately, I opted for convenience to have Ace help us with the task of purchasing them, thinking it would worthwhile. After speaking briefly with someone in the store, I was asked what I wanted for the guns. - Not being the original purchaser of the firearms, or familiar with them as a whole, I told two gentlemen, that again, I am being completely vulnerable here, and could really use their help. I had only recently acquired them due to the death of my father on Fathers day and had the Certificate of death as proof. I also had my mother in tow, who would be the one to receive any monies, as I only wanted to help her with her finances by selling them.. That all being said, the gentlemen then stated that they would have their appraisers review what we had and let us know while we waited. When they returned, the chose to offer us money for the Remington's (a 30-06 and Single Barrel Shotgun) as well as a .22 Long Barrel Revolver. Not knowing the true fair market street value, and really trusting them to assist us under the circumstances, we agreed to their offer.. While waiting to be processed out, I then happened to look up on their wall behind the register and notices the same exact Remington rifles listed above also for sale, but (if anything), in slightly lower condition than ours at more than double the offering price to us. Needless to say, I know they need a window for mark up, but I personally feel that they took advantage of our vulnerability, trust in them and our situation by only offering us 40% of what is apparently true fair market value. I stopped in hopes of purchasing a Sig Sauer AR15 on Sunday. I walked around looking at all the rifles that they had after almost thirty five minutes of no one asking if I need any help I approached two workers that were just talking, They acted as if I was bothering them and were very rude. I told them my money was good anywhere so I ended up at Rural King in Washington county and purchased a new AR15 a case and 250 rounds of ammo. And the men at Rural King were very helpful and did not seem to be bothered with someone that was making a purchase over $2000,00. I was there on a Saturday morning to buy a revolver. I got irritated at the front door interview by the owner asking why I was there. None of his business unless we agree to carry out a transaction. I said I wanted to browse. He said "If you're not here to buy a gun I can't let you in." Then added, since we are slow I can let you browse with an assistant. Worst customer service I have ever received in my entire life. As a member of the armed forces with 16 years on active duty I was told that they couldn't sell me a handgun since I didn't have a PA drivers license. Have purchased a firearm several years ago and the experience was great. Wow, what a change for the worse. First, I was interrogated at the front door as to why I was there (after waiting 30 minutes in line). Next, two out of three employees in my opinion acted like total jerks - they seemed stressed and were barking demeaning responses to some basic questions I had a about a substantial spend on some long guns (in excess of $3K). Felt like they thought were doing me a favor by tolerating my existence. The culture was "hurry up and spend your money" we don't have time for you. Bad move guys - this pandemic and national shortage will be over one day and customers never forget how you make them feel. You really lost out on a very large purchase this time and possibly in the future (and people do tell their friends and associates). I understand the public can be really difficult to deal with, especially during these trying times. But remember, you are providing an essential service - ensuring our 2nd amendment rights. We are all under a lot of stress. It's Ok to be direct, but never Ok to be demeaning or visibly aggravated without justification. Went to purchase a knife. One staff was friendly but helping a customer. The one that "helped" us was clearly put out for doing his job. He became condescending and rude when I told him the knife came with a leather sheath and much larger box. The box he brought out and demanded was for the knife, clearly was too small and the knife would not fit. As a collector of these knives, I know a tad bit about them. I never did get waited on and after standing at the counter looking at a $1,000 gun on the wall for an hour I left. Cabelas doesn't mind waiting on me. They weren't even busy. When I asked for help I was told to hang on and I did, for an hour. I like to support the small local shops but not when they don't care about their customers. I've read other reviews and lots have had similar experiences. This was my first trip in and my last. Cabelas field and stream dicks etc. don't mind taking my money. I bought my first firearm here. I couldn't help but feel like I should have been more familiar with guns than I was. It's hard to know the right questions to ask when you don't know what you're talking about. (And this guy is buying a gun, you say). Not to worry, I have had experience handling weapons in he past and am familiar with safe practices. Still, I wouldn't have been able to pick out ammo were it not for the sales rep picking it out for me. This felt less like a sales experience and more like a "what do you want" experience. Was it a bother that I came in? I couldn't tell. You don't want to talk back to a bunch of guys open carrying in a gun shop. The whole process seemed to fly by. Me: "I'd like to look at this one." Sales rep: "Ok." Me: "Well, you sure convinced me. I'll take it!" Granted I did have a good idea of what I wanted before I went in. I actually had the specific model picked out. Still, it would have been nice to have someone "selling" to me instead of just taking an order. I do feel that I got a fair price. No special bargain as I bought new, but it was in my budget. Overall the experience could have been much better. It's hard to beat the selection though. read more

Ace Sporting Goods is a large gun shop in the Pittsburgh area (certainly one of the largest around the South Hills region). It's also one of the most popular gun shops in the area. As a result, as others have said, (a) parking can be scarce depending on when you come and (b) you might end up waiting a bit longer for service than you would in a smaller place. Issue (a) is a matter of location (and as a result, can't really be helped) and issue (b) to me is primarily a function of how long it takes for background checks to be processed given the current political climate (and the resultant rush to buy guns; can't really be helped either). In my book, neither issue is worth downrating a place for. As one of the largest gun stores in the area, Ace Sporting Goods boasts one of the largest selections of firearms around, both new and used (for instance, they've currently got the best selection of Ruger revolvers in the entire area). This has its pros and cons: on the one hand, if you're looking for a specific gun, you have a good chance of finding it here. On the other hand, this gun shop has a hands-off attitude toward sales -- the staff here are respectful of your time and do not make assumptions about your gun expertise (or lack thereof). While this is much appreciated for a veteran gun buyer (I was gratified to watch female gun buyers being treated with equal respect, for instance), for the first-timer the experience can be a little confusing and/or intimidating. Pricing is very fair -- you aren't going to get the absolute lowest price on a gun here, but for most part prices will be well below MSRP. Even the used guns will come with a 1-year in-store warranty (on top of whatever manufacturer warranty the gun may have). I've never had to use the in-store warranty, but those who have tell me that Ace Sporting Goods does its best to do right by you. I've never been to another gun store that officially warrants its guns in this manner. In summary: this store is at its absolute strongest when the customer has a good idea of what he/she wants already. More novice buyers might be better-served by a shop that features a more "hands-on" sales experience. Recommended. read more

I've been to Ace in the past and had some decent experiences but I would recommend staying away from them during COVID. I saw a specific gun I wanted on their used guns list which claimed to be updated the day I checked so I tried to call and confirm it was there. After a dozen calls (not exaggerating) and no answer, decided to make the hour drive to see if it was still there. Waited in line for a little which I don't mind but then was rudely greeted by and older gentleman and escorted in. No staff was wearing masks and sure enough the gun I was looking for already sold. Literally any other gun store is more helpful and better priced, don't give them your money. read more

I've lived in this area for 10 years now and the worst customer experience I ever have, always comes from the employees of ace sporting goods. I'm a gunsmith and a ffl holder and am routinely treated like a moron who knows nothing about the products they sell. If you can get one of the terrible sales staff to actually help you they will either treat you like complete crap or make insulting remarks to your wife. Both of which they have done. Ace is the only place with real selection among sporting good stores in this area but be ready to pay more than else where. If you don't know anything about building firearms or how things should be, you should be fine to deal with them. If you question a salesman's remarks like you should be glad you don't have to get a background check for a non-firearm part or find a manufacturing defect in a firearms you'll be treated like an idiot. All the while they whisper behind your back like you can't hear. These folks have a decade long history of treating me poorly. I gotta give it to these people this place is great, I decided to stop by for the 75th anniversary sale to check out some firearms. They where having a cook out and giving away free drinks and hot dogs. The guy on the grill was super friendly and welcoming. Inside I was greeted on walking in I was helped by a few people letting me handle a few firearms and helping me compare models and what might work best for me. I definitely was schooled and learned a lot of new stuff here and I gotta say the staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. They ended up giving me two shirts for me and the lady and also a few Glock keychains and other cool stuff. I was impressed they where raffling off a few different firearms and you didn't have to be present when the drawing was held and everyone got one entry per day. I'll definitely be returning here in the future for any questions or concerns I may have. read more

Hate to bad mouth a local business but a change in staff is much needed. I completely understand working with the general public (15 years customer service) can be trying. That being said...this attitude of your doing us a favor has to change. The younger staff at this location are great! but anyone over 40 good luck even getting a basic response. As a ton of other reviews I too was greeted at the door with "what do you want" after waiting 20 minutes (not very friendly). After explaining I'd like to purchase some ammunition and a possible firearm they allowed me to enter. An older gentleman with dark hair was at the register he did not great me, ask what I wanted, NOTHING.... after literally 2 minutes of standing at the counter awkwardly staring at each other I spoke up and asked to purchase some ammunition. Even his coworker looked shocked. The cashier then pointed to a shelf with ammo (guess that means "what would you like" in mean old bastard)... I purchased my ammo and will not return. There are lots of places here in Washington but we choose to support local business but with this doing us a favor attitude I will not return. Please be warned this shop suffers from mean old dude syndrome... went to sportsman's warehouse friendly as can be... do yourself a favor and avoid this location. read more

I bought my first handgun here in 1994 after turning 21. I have purchased all sorts of shotguns, rifles, handguns and even some Benchmade knives from them since then. Their staff is always knowledgeable and professional. The negative comments on here don't make any sense... especially the one about the manager not knowing gun laws.... please... If you go there on a Saturday during peak business, you may have to wait your turn - firearms transactions take time and require one on one interaction for privacy of the purchaser. Be patient, look around and enjoy being in the presence of all of those beautiful guns. I have had a couple of issues with some of the used guns that I bought there in the past during the 1 year warranty period that they offer as part of a purchase. In all instances, they have taken care of the issue even when they had to buy parts that I am sure eliminated any profit made on the purchase... all without giving me any grief about it. That is standing up for your customer and products that you sell!! Try to do that at Cabelas, Gander Mountain or any other mega chain. Those chains have there place, but if you want to purchase a firearm and have confidence in it, go to Ace. Also, they are a family owned business that seems to treat their employees well. read more

My wife and I have purchased handguns here on multiple occasions. Pricing isn't always the lowest, but we've found the staff to be very knowledgeable and helpful. They know the right questions to ask in order to make suggestions. We have also discovered that Ace will have newly released models when other stores are saying that they won't get them for months. I just made my first purchase and my first visit here this morning. Previous I had spoken to a nice knowledgeable guy on the phone to see if they had the gun I was looking for. The store is bigger than it looks from the outside, and has a huge selection of everything firearms related. I didn't catch the name of the clerk that helped me with my purchase but he was extremely helpful and polite. Many years ago I used to listen to Jim Quinn on the radio and he always did ads for Ace, but at that time I lived too far away to go there. I still live a decent drive away but Ace had the gun I wanted, and I'm glad I went! Also the sale was quick, which I appreciated. The clerk wasn't trying to pressure me into that particular gun, and gave me honest info on it and some other guns I was curious about. I've never had a problem here. Usually have what I want at a decent price, pretty much right where it should be.I have seen a few firearms outrageously priced during political turmoil or panics but accusing gun shops of gouging on some items during those times is like accusing water of being wet. They all do it, unfortunately. I've got great service for years but I know what I want going in. Admittedly it doesn't seem like the best gun shop for those who like to browse while asking many questions and hang out but thats what I like about it. I don't tolerate Bubba clogging up the counter taking up staff's time telling BS stories when I'm waiting to spend money. If you go in knowing what you want, get a salesman's attention and they'll take care of you. If you're trying to wheel and deal on a $400 handgun, or you don't know the difference between a Glock and a Taurus Millennium and gotta ask what's different about them go to Billy Bobs Bait and Tackle or one of the other tiny shops that like to BS with you but have a whole lot of nothing but they sure can get it for you. read more

I've bought several firearms here over the years. Outstanding selection of guns to choose from and extremely helpful and KNOWLEDGEABLE staff! They've always been very patient and helpful with me from answering questions to helping me fill out the paperwork (eye issues and the print is sooo small!). I've been a customer for over 10 years and always recommend people to go check them out and talk to them if they are in the market. If you are a first time buyer, they do a great job at finding the correct, suitable gun for you! Parking can be hard to come by and wait times will vary depending on when you go. Went into Ace Sporting Goods on Sat 4/25/2015 to trade in a gun and buy a new pistol. I have bought 3 pistols over the last 3 years and have always enjoyed dealing with the staff at Ace. Until this trip. The young man asked if he could help me I told him what I was in fore. He took my gun to the back and then came back and told me they were not interested in my gun because they already had one in stock. This was when it went bad he set my gun down on the counter and then walked away to talk to another employee, never asked if there was anything else he could help me with. They were not busy and I was still interested in buying a new gun even with out the trade in , I then called him back over to look at some guns. It seemed like it was a real bother to wait on me so that sealed the deal no new gun. I am sorry to say ,I do not see myself ever buying another gun from Ace. read more

Went just to buy a pa hunting license. 1st employee just pointed and said look for the pink tags, second employee point over their, third employee just was starring at a computer while I waited, when another employee walked up ask asked what he was doing and he said nothing, I asked a fourth employee who was walking buy and he decided to help me. The store was not busy, Have been a customer not on a regular bases but have purchased numerous firearms over the years, since their original store in Washington PA, not anymore such bad customer service. read more

Every business should have an appreciation for the revenue stream...this place DOES NOT. Made a trip on Sat. Feb 25 2017 for a Smith&Wesson promotion. Purchased a handgun putting almost $400 into their till. I had an issue, made another 55 mile round trip only to be scolded by Keith who apparently suffers from "little man's" complex. The tone was abrupt and dismissive...NO APPRECIATION for the revenue stream. You can purchase firearms anywhere, so do it elsewhere. Oh...and I had to track down a salesperson at a time when they were not at all crowded...with one even walking right by me while I was at the counter making no effort to help me. Again, you can spend your money anywhere, and I suggest you try anywhere else, the service cannot be worse. Oh...and the restroom was musty smelling. I left sneezing for hours.
