Maybe I came at a wrong time? It was an hour or so before closing. A custard filled donut and a chocolate cupcake, I felt - were a tad stale. The the custard was oozy plentiful, the donut's interior was kinda crusty and the chocolate cake portion of my cupcake, was crumbly and not very chocolatey. read more

Yes please! This is a wonderful little Dutch bakery along the side of the road. If you aren't paying attention, you will drive right but it....and then you will be sad. We got a dozen donuts here yesterday day and it was hard given that their pies looked amazing! I might have to come back for dessert. The long Johns are nice and simple unlike other bakeries. If in the New Holland, PA area, you must stop at Achenbachs! They specialize in the long john, but I've yet to have a pastry is didn't enjoy. Three helpful hints: First, get there earlier in the morning. If you don't, they tend to run out of a lot of items due to their popularity. Second, it gets busy and parking is very limited. You may have to park alongside the road and walk. Finally, be patient. The inside is not large and you may need to wait in line to get in during the busiest of times. I've never been to the shop so my review is just for the treats. I came to the area from Philly for my cousin's wedding. The wedding cake was made out of long johns. I've never had one before but I will definitely be sure to get one when I'm in the area again! They were so good. I had a chocolate one and my fiance had a vanilla one. Both were equally as good. We also took home some whoopie pies (red velvet and chocolate). I had my red velvet whoopie pie after breakfast and it was delicious. I was only planning on eating half because they are big and full of cream, but the cream wasn't overly sweet for my taste so I finished the whole thing. I'm kind of sad because I don't have anymore but I hope to be back in the area soon to visit family so I hope I can stop in and try some more treats! read more

One of my family's favorite bakeries for 3 generations. However, I have to take a star off for an emerging trend of inconsistency. Over the past 9 months or so we've all noticed that the quality, flavor, size, etc of their pastries has started to vary a lot. One day everything will be fine. The next week a certain doughnut will taste like only half the flavoring was added. 2 weeks later that doughnut tastes great again, but another one is half the size it's always been. Following week all is back to normal, but the chocolate long John frosting tastes weak and slightly like peanut butter. Then, magically everything is perfect and the same as 20 years ago. Achenbach's Pastry has been around since '54 and offers baked goods made from scratch. They have their famous Long Johns, breads, pies, and cakes. The hubs and I stopped by while in the area and picked up some of their famous Long Johns. Three flavors were available: vanilla, chocolate, and peanut butter - we got one of each! The vanilla one was the best, as the doughnut itself was fluffy and fresh, and the vanilla frosting was nice and creamy and not too overwhelming. The chocolate one had a nice cocoa powder taste to it, but the bread itself was stale. The peanut butter one was the least favorite out of the three, as the bread was also stale and the frosting didn't really taste strongly of peanut butter. I highly recommend in stopping by early in the morning to get their fresh batch, as that makes all the difference. Supposedly they run out closer to the 1PM mark. They also have cute little stuffed 'Long Johns' to purchase as a souvenir. I haven't been to their store, but I picked up some of their baked goods during a recent stop at Javateas in Ephrata. We had a chocolate cake slice with icing, and a sandwich cookie. The cake slice was good, but the cookie was great! The cookies had pieces of peanut in them and the middle was peanut butter frosting/icing. Very good and I would absolutely get it again! read more

Three Words: Peanut Butter Longjohns! This place is amazing! And well worth a drive from ANYWHERE! I got a baker's dozen of their fresh doughnuts, including both the chocolate and peanut butter longjohns. Both were amazing, but the peanut butter longjohns are to die for! Their homemade custard is fluffy and light, which makes for an incredible mouthfeel. Finally, the Pecan Sticky Buns are AMAZING! My mother, who spent a fair amount of time in the area as a child, was ecstatic! She said they were exactly like the ones she used to have as a kid! I ordered a long John birthday cake and was expecting quality decorations and delicious fresh baked long johns just like I got here many times in the past. Instead I got a cake with very poor quality decorations and very dry day-old donuts. Of course not discounted for the very poor quality. So very disappointed and quite frankly embarrassed to serve it for his party. Please don't let this place go downhill. This was always a no-brainer for good quality baked goods. I'm giving this review/rating based mostly off the few items I have tried. Once I have tried more, I may update my review. The longjohns are what keep me coming back! They are so good, that I find myself leaving the house 5 mins early for work just so I can stop and get one - or two. The frosting isn't sickening sweet, it's creamy and perfect. The donut itself is airy and not dense, which means it's a winner in my book. They offer a great deal where if you buy a dozen, they throw in one donut of your choosing for free. This is great incentive for me to bring in donuts for my coworkers as well. Here is where I knock off a star. I have tried a couple of their other pastries as well, and haven't been as nearly impressed as I am with their longjohns. Their cannoli was rather disappointing. I may be more unforgiving since I'm Italian and have had my fair share of amazing cannolis, but the one I tried here was just not right. Also, the pie I tried was rather bland in flavor and nothing to write home about. I will be back to try more of the variety of pastries that you have to offer. I would like to try some of the cakes soon, so hopefully I can update my review. read more

Very disappointing experience. Ordered our wedding cake here and it was totally a disappointment... it was so dry our guests were throwing it away and neither were our instructions for the layers followed. I'm a professional baker so I know what quality is. I called expecting an apology and compensation because that's how I would respond but instead they accused us of lying and offered to send us 25 dollars which I found very insulting. They've lost our business, not from product quality because things happen sometimes, but because of their attitude and customer service. I won't be recommending them to anyone. read more
