Piece of Bake Old-timey bake shop located in the heart of Lancaster County that bakes up all their baked goods fresh on the daily. The Good: *Their Shoofly pie is terrific and one of the best we've had. If you've never had this Amish staple, make sure to grab at least a slice or three whilst you're here. This and a nice big scoop of vanilla ice cream is simplicity at its finest. *Whoopie pies are another Amish/Lancaster that must be tried. *Discount shelf for day-old baked goods * Locally made jams, preserves and sauces *Annie's Kitchen Hot-Stuffed Peppers is dangerously addicting! *Petting zoo right outside. Bring quarters to feed the animals. *Pantry items, as well as bulk and canned goods *Souvenirs *They sell almost everything they have/make online at their website--including the aforementioned pies and peppers! The Meh: *Service was a bit gruff, which isn't normal for this area. Maybe I just caught them on a bad day? The Ugly: *The website charges a $16 "handling fee" no matter how small your order. The shipping charges are a bit absurd, too, but they probably don't get much of a price break from UPS being a small business, so I don't fault them for that. Plus, Amazon Prime® has def ruined our expectations for shipping prices, but the "handling fee" is a bit absurd. TLDR: Must visit spot to satisfy your sweet tooth and pet some baby goats while you're at it!

Nestled right in the middle of Amish country, you'll find all kinds of baked goods, jellies, jams, ice cream and knickknacks/souvenirs to take home with you. We had been on a horse and buggy tour through "Abe's" and our fine guide told us about this spot. We were thankful that we didn't include that on our tour because a very large tour bus had pulled up while we were riding by. There's something called "Snitz" that none of us had ever heard of. During our conversation she mentioned that this was one of the more commonly eaten pies of the Amish families in the area. This particular bake shop is one of the few that carries it. So, we purchased a Snitz pie and will give that a taste today. This is a lovely spot to go to as a tourist.

We set out on an awesome vacation to the East Coast and we wanted to make sure that we explored around Amish country. Prior to traveling, my husband mapped out our journey. After taking a ride in an Amish buggy through the countryside, we stopped by Bird in Hand Bake Shop. This was going to be an experience to remember. First of all, the fields of greenery throughout the area are absolutely beautiful. Amish homes are nearby and you'll see plenty of people working hard in farm country. As you walk toward the bake shop, you'll see the coolest swinging tables. It's looks like a covered picnic table but you can gently swing it back and forth as you enjoy an outdoors meal. The shop itself is a bit of an all in one location. Freshly baked Amish goods are readily available along with a great variety of nuts, chocolates, and pretzels. I did try the chocolate shoofly pie. It was different but quite delicious. It's difficult to describe the taste, but it was really good. We purchased some buttered pretzels and the smell and taste were undeniably butter filled. You could smell the butter in the air and the pretzels tasted like they were deeply immersed in butter. Different, but pretty cool! Along the wall, you'll find pickled vegetables and other goods jarred and ready for purchase. You'll also find various items throughout the shop. I liked the handmade bird feeders as they were painted with bright colors and were large enough to support birds that are larger than a hummingbird. Wind-chimes are strung up outside of the shop and if you listen carefully, you'll hear the beautiful music powered by the wind. Ironworks are also popular items that are handmade by the Amish. Several have been made into wall decor while others have been shaped into large hooks. Of course, you can purchase straw hats that are typically worn by Amish men. So there's definitely a nice variety of Amish food and souvenirs to choose from at this location. Bird in Hand Bake Shop is a great place to visit. It's just outside of the larger city of Lancaster. Tour companies also like to bring people here to indulge in some homemade Amish goodies. It's not uncommon to see horse drawn buggies pulling up as people stop by for ice cream and so on. Everyone is very friendly and you can't beat the beautiful scenery that surrounds the shop. I definitely can't wait to return to Bird in Hand, PA because the experiences are quite unique.

Great shop. The people there are so nice. Quality of the products is top notch. Prices are fair. Get a pretzel from the shop outside.

Bird in Hand bake shop not to be confused with the bakery on Rt 340 is nestled deep in the Amish farmlands away from the hustle and bustle of Lancaster. The scenic drive here is worth the visit alone. The sell all types of baked goods here with the specialty being Shoo Fly pies and fruit flavor turnovers. You can get all types of pastries and breads here made fresh daily. They even sell the local Schintz pie here. Too many temptations but I wanted to go for one of their seasonal offerings and ended up getting a strawberry rhubarb pie. You can purchase individual slices, small pies and full size pies. They even have a refrigerated section. The store is decked out with all your traditional Amish souvenirs for sale including jams, crafts, hats, cards, just about anything you can name is sold here. Outside sits a trailer selling fresh made Amish pretzels. Believe me your trip is not complete unless you invest in one of these buttery pretzels. The price is reasonable! Behind the pretzel trailer sits a children's play area and while we were getting into our car we heard a rooster crow! It's very calm and serene out here. I've shopped here on previous trips to Lancaster and have never been disappointed with their offering. Everything here is strictly takeout. You pay for your purchases at a cashier's desk. Staff is on hand to answer any questions you may have. They have their own parking area which fills up rather quickly due to its popularity. This place is definitely worth a visit if you find yourself in the Lancaster area.

It is the sort of landmark that promises something memorable, or at least something sweet. Inside, the place leans heavily into its role as a stop-off for visitors. Shelves are filled with faux-Amish goods, hex signs, and a cheerful assortment of bric-a-brac, along with shirts that seem very proud of nearby towns with names that invite, shall we say a certain kind of humor. It feels less like a bakery and more like a general store that wandered into a theme. The people working there are genuinely kind, and generous with samples, which is always a wise and welcome strategy. We tried a bit of the shoo fly pie, and in the past we've tried some cookies, root beer, and ice cream. They were all perfectly fine. Pleasant, even. But they did not distinguish themselves from the many other places in Lancaster County offering the same treats with equal or better competence. Nothing here is bad. In fact, it is all quite enjoyable in the moment. But it is not something I would go out of my way for again. Far less so when the tourist busses are around. It is a place you stop at because you are already there, because the windmill caught your eye, because someone offers you a sample and you say yes. Three stars, for doing what it does well enough, in a place where "well enough" is abundant.

What I personally love about these doughnuts , it's the "layered " part. The croissant like mix between a doughnut and a flaky croissant. They are also big doughnuts.. the flavors are good and very interesting. I got half a dozen to try as many as I could but still left some of the flavors out. Definitely opting for a full dozen next time! Another thing that makes this place stand out , is there savory doughnuts . I got one of those too because I just had to try them.. lol. I couldn't stop eating them lol they are so good! By far, my favorite doughnut in PA. They also offer Gluten free & vegan doughnut options. Which is a huge plus, since my daughter is gluten free. She said "these are the best doughnuts I've ever had" ! The place is really nice , modern like warm Bakery / coffee shop feel. The service was great too. I waited a bit for the gluten free and savory doughnuts, but the employees were very good about letting me know that they would be coming out shortly, which was nice.
