I work for a school and every year for at least 16 or so years we have used Acme Bookbinding Co. to rebind damaged books. Students are so tough on their books!! Every year when we receive the rebound books back I am ALWAYS amazed at how wonderful they look. Also, they have even gotten better over time with technology. Without question this was the absolute worst customer service experience I've had with any company in any industry. I can't comment on the quality of their work as I was never able to even get a simple a price quote for a book binding service. Here is a quick summary of my experience with the company: November 25th - I sent a detailed email to Manny, who is listed as the 'customer service' contact, in which the project I needed done was described. I specifically asked if this was something ACME Bookbinding could do? No response back, not even a simple 'No' we don't handle projects like this. Okay. December 16th - After letting a couple of weeks pass, I decide to PERSONALLY go into the ACME office since I live only a few miles away. I thought that maybe my email just got lost or forgotten. Not a big deal since I live close and it would be better to speak in detail (in person) about what I wanted done. I met with Manny, who seemed a genuinely good guy, and went over what I was looking to do. We talked about cover, page layout and printing options. After about 20 minutes he said great, I have everything I need regarding the project, I'll have a price quote emailed out to you in a day or two. I never received any email. December 23rd - I made a follow-up phone call to Manny and left a voicemail. I basically just reconfirmed my email address to ensure he hadn't written it down incorrectly and reminded him that it had been a week and still no price quote had been sent. No response or call back. December 30th - I made another follow-up call to Manny and actually got him on the line! Even though I was losing patience at this point, I remained extremely polite saying that 'I know you guys are probably crazy busy with the holidays, and my project is small, but I just haven't received the price quote we spoke about'. He seemed somewhat apologetic and said 'I can definitely get that to you later today'. Great! Finally making some progress. Well it turned out not so great because again no price quote was ever emailed. January 6th - I made another follow-up call. I was told by the secretary that Manny was not available to take a call. I told her I would try back again. January 9th - At this point I basically knew that this project was never going to get done by ACME and I had just wasted a lot of time with this place. I made one last call to Manny and again got a secretary who said, oh he is just going into a meeting. I could almost visualize in my mind Manny standing there shaking his head and saying 'Oh no not this guy again! There is no way I'm taking that call'. I left a voicemail basically saying how I was failing to understand why I couldn't get a simple communication back from the company. And guess what happened next? No response back. So in summary, over the span of seven weeks I sent two emails (never a response), I made one 20 minute personal visit to the office in which I met with Manny, I had one follow-up phone conversation Manny and I left three voicemails (which never received acknowledgement or a call back). And still I couldn't get a simple price quote. Pretty amazing!! At the end of the day, I'm most annoyed by the fact that this company had zero regard for my time. Absolutely zero regard. Honestly, it's okay if you don't want my business (which I was expecting to cost anywhere from $500-$1000), but why wouldn't that just be communicated to me from the very beginning? A simple, 'No we don't handle that kind of work' at the start would have sufficed. Instead, I waste time and energy thinking that ACME is going to handle this project (I had a personal meeting and follow-up phone call with Manny going over the project in detail!!!!) and then there is no follow thru week after week after week. It was absolutely infuriating. I would say if you have a small retail project don't even bother checking with these guys. They obviously don't care about that type of business and you'll likely waste your time believing they do (cause they won't tell you!) read more

This place is a joke. For starters, they claim that you will be charged if you walk through the door. I had to go there for my thesis book binding because they were chosen by the school. It took 2 weeks for 2 books, which seemed like a lot. I called ahead to make sure the books were ready. Upon arrival, they tell me that it is cash only. I easily had one of the smallest orders there and my bill was still $100+, but its cash only? You couldn't have told me on the phone? No one carries that much cash on them. And to top it off, I am pretty sure that it wasn't done correctly. Since its the school picked them, the school can deal with that issue. The whole process was sketchy and unpleasant. If you have a choice, run, do not walk, to another business. read more

I was recommended to this company by Easton Press because I like nice leather-bound books and I have purchased many of theirs throughout the years. I have written and published 3 books through this company. The first was a history of my great-grandfather in the American Civil War entitled, "Sergeant Rose and the 15th Iowa in the War of the Rebellion." It gave careful detailed narrative on the battles he fought in for 3-1/2 years. It was published in 2006 and Manny Motto was my principal lead at the company. Manny was very easy to work with, gave us prices upfront as to what to expect and the product was better than i ever could've expected. It had a dust jacket and embossed red leather cover. A friend had made detailed, colored maps. It was a perfect project and I was overjoyed. I had 100 copies made to give to cousins, uncles, aunts, posterity of this man, who also said it was like nothing they had ever seen before as to the quality. I came back to ACME in 2013 with a book on my father, entitled, "Alton." Katherine Flamenco was lead for ACME on this project as she was on my book in 2014. This time I ordered 25 copies, some in leather, most in fabric embossed in gold leaf, with colored pictures inside. Dad had been mayor of our city and so i was very proud of him and wanted to represent him well. Again, the quality was first-rate. I was very pleased. In 2014, I wrote a biography on a special brother of mine who was 7 years older than I was and died at 20 of chronic glomerulonephritis before the advent of dialysis or kidney transplant. I loved him and wanted something high quality to remember him with. This time I only ordered 6 copies, 3 in light blue leather, 3 in light blue fabric, silver embossed for my 2 living brothers and my 3 sons, as well as myself, entitled, "Terry." Again, I was totally delighted with the high quality of the book and have been ever grateful for ACME for giving me such a great product. My oldest brother has written his life's story now and after receiving copies of my books, has decided he would like the quality I have had, so I have recommended them to him. read more

They were pretty terrible. I had to have my thesis bound, and they were one of the university's "recommended" publishers. I placed my order online, and didn't receive an email confirmation that they had received my PDF file. No big deal. So, I called them 2 days later to confirm. They told me that they would send me an email confirmation shortly. 3 days later, they send me an email asking me if I uploaded the PDF yet. When I told them I had a week before, they sent me a quote that was COMPLETELY different from my original request. First, they accused me of not knowing what I submitted in my original request. I thought perhaps I did screw up, and so I asked for a copy of the request; I still had not received confirmation that they had received my file. Then, they fessed up that they had lost my original request somehow. At this point, I had already waited 5 business days. The entire turn around is supposed to be 10 business days (unless you want to pay a rush rate). They offered to still have my thesis bound on time based on the date I submitted my request, at no additional cost to me. I thought, "Ok, they screwed up, but they are making amends". No big deal. Then, I got the quote. They wrote that they were charging me the 10 day rate, but actually charged me the 5 day rate. And, they charged me $35 for shipping when I told them I was picking the theses up in person (at this point I wanted to make sure they were printed correctly, etc, before I paid). So, I asked them to remove the shipping and rush charges. They removed the shipping, and ignored the rush charges. I had to call again to get the rush charges removed. Then, when I went to pick the books up 5 business days later, they couldn't find them immediately and gave me an attitude as if that was somehow my fault. In the end, I did get my theses. They are ok, but they are still printed on the wrong paper, but will suffice for my needs. That said, I would definitely not use them again if I had a printing need, and have advised my fellow grad students to do the same. read more

I cannot say enough good things about this company! I had them make 20 beautiful leather and gold bindings for an ancestor's memoirs and we will treasure the results forever. I also had an old cookbook rebound and made 20 for my friends, and an author friend of mine made 100 copies of her poetry book. We all are thrilled. All the representatives I spoke with were quite helpful, but I know they have a very large-run industrial printing side in addition to their fine art bindery and perhaps there was some crossover in customer service...But I give an A++++.
