This is the second time I've have reached out to Acorn. First time, I needed a living room lounge chair tightened up. All of the wood joints needed to be tightened. The quality of work was superb and the time it took to do the work was fast and fair. I decided to call again to have four outdoor Adirondack lounge chairs slightly reconstructed to eliminate any movement and had the seating of four white Richard Schultz 1966 lounge chairs and one chaise lounger cleared of all yellowing and touched up as they really looked terrible. Acorn did an amazing job. The Adirondacks were reengineered to hold their position at just the right angle and the Richard Schultz chairs/loungers were brought back to life. I had a vintage set of McGuire chairs . Years ago I got them from the Library public seating area and they were in pretty bad shape and quite dirty. My experience with Rick was so divergent of the other reviews on here. I found him to be condescending, shifty in his communication and his pricing is inflated, bordering on scammy. The TL;DR version: Beware ladies, have a (white) man interact with him, and you'll get better service and probably a much better price. Rick may as well be a car salesman. I had a fragile settee/bench repaired by him, and when I received the first quote was $250 based on pictures, which then jumped to $475 after in person inspection. Fine, fair enough, but it did seem high by what the scope of work called for. When I asked him what the actual work would entail, he gave some condescending non-answer and avoided the question, the subtext being I wouldn't understand even if he were to give me a straight answer. After pressing further, he admitted it was mostly just gluing the parts back together. So... let me get this straight, $475 for ... glue? Overall, the tone of our conversations was that a little lady like me wouldn't understand this man stuff. What affirmed my suspicions was when a male friend came in during the furniture drop off, Rick assumed the friend was my husband, and he would only speak to him, and his tone completely shifted from condescending to respectful. He then gives my faux husband tips on how to fix the surface of our old coffee table like they're old drinking buddies. The best way I can put it was, it was like when my "husband" came in, Rick was going to get caught for ripping him off (because obviously my husband is the one paying for this repair. Obviously.) and he was trying to backpedal his way out of it. In an earlier communication, I also asked if he guaranteed his work, which was again met with a non-answer saying, "we cannot guarantee the longevity of the repairs anymore than we can predict the treatment it will be subsequently exposed to." But when in conversation with my friend/husband, he says that he CAN guarantee the work and if anything happens with it in the future, he'd be happy to fix it. Seriously, WTF. Sorry Rick, in this time and age, your old boys club ways aren't going to cut it. It's anachronistic and gross and I'm sorry we ever crossed paths. read more

My partner asked Rick some questions about the process - apparently Rick didn't like the questions, because after a few questions, Rick said he wouldn't take the chair. :( It was more than an hour out of our way - bummer to deal with this kind of service. read more

I had a beautiful but worn 1930s oak dinette set -- finish in bad shape, some seams in the wood coming apart, upholstery worn and torn in a few places. Rick responded quickly and professionally to my inquiries, and they did a beautiful job. There was one small delay when they discovered a problem with one of the wood seams when it was otherwise done, but other than that, everything went smoothly. And it turned out gorgeous. Rick is awesome to work with! Over the summer he restored a hope chest that belonged to my grandmother and it turned out great. He was fast and communicated well during the process to make sure he got the desired stain shade just right. Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I noticed a water mark stain caused by a felt pad at the bottom of a vase on my new(ish) Restoration Hardware table. Rick made two trips to my home and took the time and effort to asses the piece. Instead of fixing it on the spot with what supplies he had, he waited to come back a second time when he had the right materials that would work better on the table. An extra step that I really appreciate. The stain is virtually gone. In addition, he advised me on how to better care for the table and left some supplies so I can treat the table and avoid stains in future. Acorn saved my life. I am an interior designer who had ordered an expensive 10ft high-gloss dinning table for my client. After waited 8 month for the table to be custom-made, we found the table arrived with a scratched surface. I was stuck between a very unhappy client and a heavy table that I couldn't send back for restoring. I found Acorn from one of its competitors, a restoration one-man shop that was too busy to take on my project. I spoke to Rick, the owner of Acorn, on the phone and emailed him the pictures of the damaged table. Rick was super responsive, accommodating, and transparent about the costs. Within one week, he sent his technicians out to restore the table. The technicians showed up right on time at the appointment window, and were very respectful of the property. If I could give six stars, I would: We had two battered and many-times-painted-over, 94 year old gumwood kitchen doors. Rick Vallejo (the owner) did a fabulous job of stripping, filling in screw holes from push plates so that they are invisible, and then refinishing the doors to as close to their former glory as they could be. Not only that, his price was WAY better than anyone else we talked to. AND, when he heard that we were planning to tie the doors to the top of our RAV to transport them, he picked them up and delivered them without a charge, because it just hurt him to put the doors at risk. (Here's a little plug for cabinet maker Al Henry from A Henry Fine Woodworking, who figured out how to fix the old doorknob holes, and hooked us up with Rick.) I unreservedly recommend Rick and Acorn. I will use him from now on for everything he is willing to work on. read more

Lots of extra work for them, but they did this professionally and cheerfully. Our 80-year-old original front door of our 1930's Mediterranean home was in need of some TLC. Another vendor (not Acorn) I had contacted earlier said nothing can be done to preserve the original door, and it's best to just paint it. I refused to believe that our beautiful original door could not be preserved. A neighbor suggested calling Rick Vallejo, and I am so happy that I did! Rick came out on a weekend morning, which was more convenient than a weekday for us, to look at the door and provide his expert opinion of a solution to preserve the original beauty of the door. While there, he also observed the original floors in our home, and gave us an interesting history lesson of the wood. Rick came back another time to remove the door to take back to his workshop. In place of the front door, he securely nailed in a large piece of wood temporarily so we'd be safe. When Rick returned with our door a couple weeks later, the door was beautifully restored and at a reasonable price. Again, while he was at our house and without mention from us, he observed that our dog had scratched up the wood on our foyer closet door. Rick got out his Restor-A-Finish that he happened to have handy and a cloth, and buffed out the wood scratches. That is truly going above and beyond!
