I brought an acoustic to have some top cracks repaired, and was mocked before opening the case! I guess an old Gibson is way too pedestrian for these carbon button microphone, handle-bar mustachioed gents to even consider taking a look-see without scoffing! But I was quite willing to part with some happy cabbage to have the repairs done, so I left her there. 6 weeks later, I was told that my guitar was "still not up to humidity yet, and is in the basement in a plastic bag". Something about this smelled fishy, so I decided to rescue her. I considered jotting over on my pennyfarthing, but didn't think those galoots would even bat an eye. This is really a first class stringed instrument shop. They have a wide selection of Guitars, Banjos, Mandolins, Ukes for any budget. The prices seem fair and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. That said, the repair service is excellent. I brought in my lower-end mandolin that was in a sad state, and Steve spent a good bit of time with it to bring the action down to acceptable levels (he had to modify the bridge), adjust the truss rod, and did an excellent general setup. My lower-end instruments do not always receive the attention they deserve at other shops but Steve definitely went the extra mile and I will continue to support them! read more

Well, I called about something I was interested in and I have to say I got a pretty unfriendly and impatient vibe from the person I talked to. Nothing horrible happened, but every other high end music shop I have called has been more than happy to answer questions and offer helpful suggestions. Just took my mother here as one of her guitar strings was broken, and wanted to look at both new strings as well as look at their guitars. There were four people in the store and couldn't get anyone to acknowledge us holding the guitar! Tried to get anyone's attention but couldn't. Waited for about five minutes then decided to leave. I live in the neighborhood so have had occasion to stop into this store. I got to tell you, every single time I walk into that shop I think to myself as I'm leaving "I will never go back there" The guy that runs the place is a pompous dick who has this kind of, I'm too good for you, attitude. I have three interaction in particular that I'd like to share. account 1. I purchased a guitar from a friend and wanted to install strap locks. It was an older gibson and it was particularly difficult to get the screw into place. So i went to this place, the closest shop to my home. And the guy just made me feel like I was an idiot for trying to put on the strap locks. He just had this attitude like "what kind of guitar player needs strap locks" He gave me a lecture on why they're not good for the guitar and then without even trying just told me that I had really "mucked it up" and the only guy he knew in town that could fix it takes about 6-8 weeks before he'll get to my guitar. end of the store, I hopped into my car, cursed myself for even wasting my time at this shop which always leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I drove down to the south side and the guys are Pittsburgh guitars jumped on the job, they were extremely thankful that I had come in. They took the guitar into the back drilled out the stripped screw replaced it for free. I offered them money and they wouldn't take it. Moral, the dude at acoustic music works doesn't really have a clue what he's talking about. account 2. My girlfriend also plays guitar professionally and was encouraged by a guy she works with to go to this shop. The owner was obnoxious, he showed her a couple guitars, used martins. nice guitars but when it became clear that she wanted to buy it from him, he became impatient and said "look you either want it or you don't" and when I suggested that if he threw in a couple packs of strings we'd call it a deal he became very stern... "NO, this is the guitar this is the price you're not going to get anything else for nothing" then he went on to say something like "in my day we paid for what we wanted" some crap like that. So she buys the guitar and he pulls out a case that doesn't match. "It's too big" we suggest..."NO no, it's just right, that's the way it's supposed to be" He's just a jerk off. account 3. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING IN THIS STORE is over priced... from the guitars to the picks and strings on the wall. It's almost laughable. I just really don't like this dude at all. I would recommend you go down to East Carson street and visit the guys at Pittsburgh Guitars. They're wonderful. read more

Both salespeople who were standing behind the counter refused to look up from their laptops to even acknowledge our presence as we stood in the store for a good 2 minutes. Horrible customer service. Every time I need new guitar strings, I curse. The guy that works here usually ignores me for 10 minutes while I stand at the counter waiting to be acknowledged. And heaven forbid I have any questions... I recently acquired a mandolin from a friend, and simply asked the clerk what kind of strings should I buy... I got a 5 minute lecture on how "basic" and "crappy" it was, and that it didn't matter what strings I put on it, unless it was one of their expensive mandolins in the store, it'd sound like garbage. I hate this store, and the day I see a "out of business" sign on the door, I will be very happy. read more

This place is great!!! They have the largest selection of high end guitars out there. You won't find these high end guitars at guitar center. The manager was a pleasure to work with. He was able to answer all my questions about the guitars in detail. You can tell that these guys have a true passion for high quality musical instruments. They even have a wood shop in the back where they build guitars. I bought a beautiful Collings guitar last year and it is by far the best guitar I have ever played. Having lived in Long Island, New Hampshire, Boston, and finally Pittburgh, no local music shop leaves a bad taste in my mouth quite like this one. Expect boutique prices without the quality to back them up. Yes, there are some good brands here, but they are overpriced. Lots of beginner/entry-level/economy brands too, but those are also marked up beyond reason. Even string prices are ridiculous. The business model here is clear: forsake lots of price-sensitive customers to milk whoever's still around. And combining this with the owner's off-puttingly glib demeanor is a difficult mix for me. If prices and your retail experience matter to you, I suggest you try elsewhere. read more

I've purchase several guitars from Steve and have spoken to him numerous times. I normally don't write reviews, but after seeing the nasty comments, I felt compelled to respond. I will say the following: 1) The person one of the reviewers met must have been Steve's evil twin, because Steve is a real gentleman. I have nothing but the highest respect for his professionalism, courtesy, and integrity; 2) I love "every time I walk into the shop". If you have had the experieces you have had, why do you return? 3) Love the end where another gutiar store is recommended. Yea, I get it now. 4) Steve sells high end guitars which happen to be expensive. He competitively prices them, and has one of the best inventories of any shop in the country. But boy those picks are dang expensive!!! Ive done business with a number of guitar shops, and Steve and AMW is as good as it gets. read more

Every year or so I'll stop by to check out the stock only to leave in a rage after having to listen to that jerk making snotty ridiculing remarks to everyone within earshot. I'm ashamed to admit I broke down and bought an instrument from the place a year ago. $1500 worth of guitar that seemed a nice deal at the time. I went twice, ( not sure why I went back the second time) both times in regards to my mandolin and some setup or repair work that I wanted done, and both times he made it quite clear that since I didn't buy the mandolin there, and that it wasn't a $5,000 mandolin, that I was less of a human being and I was not important enough to be in his presence. I have to agree with other folks' reviews. Beautiful shop, great instruments, but horrible customer service. The owner is truly a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Years ago I had a really awesome interaction with him, chatted about getting started in learning the banjo, and he was a pleasure to talk to. Since then I've had no less than three extremely negative experiences here. Long waits to be acknowledged, condescending attitudes, and pretty much every other problem mentioned by the other negative reviews. Each time I was made to feel like I was wasting his time. I bought a guitar on line and brought it into the shop for advice. It had a strange feel to the neck and I had hoped it could be adjusted and perhaps somewhat customized to be more of what I had expected. The owner, Steve assessed the guitar and advised me to return it due to the many problems he found. He spent a good amount of time trying to come up with ideas and making measurments to try to improve the guitar. When I offered to pay for his consult, he would not except any payment.
