History
Established in 1982.
Located in southwestern Pennsylvania, Johnstonbaugh's Music Centers was started in 1982 as a band instrument repair shop and in 1984 began renting instruments. Services continued to expand, and in 1989 the Penn Hills store opened and became the first full-service music center in the community. Convinced of the value of a community-based concept to its mission, the Gibsonia store was added in 1995. Our new South Hills store, located in the Chartiers Valley Shopping Center in Bridgeville, had its grand opening in February 2006.
Today, Johnstonbaugh's Music Centers offers a wide range of personalized services and accessories for individuals and schools in the Pittsburgh area, including sales and rentals of band instruments and orchestral strings; in-house brass, woodwind, string, and percussion repair and maintenance; print music and accessory sales; and private instruction by qualified music educators.
Meet the Business Owner: Robert J.
Like many musicians, my interest in music began in elementary school with lessons. My interest grew through secondary school and ultimately led me to study band instrument repair at Western Iowa Tech Community college from which I graduated in 1980. After gaining repair experience, I set up my own repair shop in the basement of my parents' home in 1982 and began calling on school districts. In 1986, I completed an associate's degree in business administration. Also that year I began renting instruments, in addition to repairing, at the request of an educator who could not find someone to provide rentals for her rural school. In response to customer demand, sales were expanded and lessons were added, as was a second community-based store in 1995 and a third community-based store in 2006. Today, I continue as President and serve as one of five school educational service representatives.
