He didn't try to lure me in, or sell me on anything. Upon my first visit, I was greeted by Emily, one of the owners, who led me into the class. I was then greeted by the other owner Art, who welcomed me as the class was doing warm ups. At the time, I had no clue they were owners, just based upon how integrated into the school they were/are. All of the schools I've been to I never met the owner. I think it's very cool. A lot of gyms feel like corporations. Not this one. It's a perfect balance between professionalism and fun. Emily and Art genuinely care about you and don't put up with any crap. If you get hurt, they will make it their mission to find out who, what, when, where, and, why. That brings me to my next reason why I love PBJJ. The culture at this gym is vastly different than the other gyms I've been to. Not only are the owners welcoming, but everyone that trains there is welcoming. Every single instructor will introduce themselves to you if they have never met you before. Instead of making you feel like a noob on your first, second, third day, they make you feel comfortable and a part of the family. Most importantly, the quality of the instructors and classes are top notch. Most of the instructors are black belts, which is highly unusual. They are all so knowledgeable, and each one brings their own style which helps you develop your game better. Additionally, from white to black belt, there is a very diverse mix of students that train there. This gives you the opportunity to roll with people of various experience and sizes. It also gives you the chance to have multiple rolling partners so you're not constantly rolling with the same few people. Overall, BJJ is a sport you have to love, obviously, but where you train makes all of the difference. If you're new to BJJ, or you're looking for a gym, I highly recommend just coming and trying out a class. You will soon understand why I've grown so fond for that place.

When I first came to Spartan I was transitioning from one gym to another…read more I knew I had to make sure I could tolerate the people that were around me that I would be working out with because let's face it, distractions come every day. I also knew I had to find a gym with similar equipment that offered strength toning for my injuries from a prior car accident Because I'm limited on some mobility and they understand this. However, when I walked into spartan and started taking the classes I was blown away. I felt like a kid in a candy store looking at all of the equipment they had to offer in the workouts. it excited me, but challenged me at the same time. Fear started to take over my brain, can I do this bc spartan was far more advanced from where I was coming from. I began taking the drop in workouts, sweating like crazy of course doing my best to overcome the challenge in front of me. I was also looking for a gym with an adult mindset, no pettiness or caddiness, because let's face it... when you go to a gym to actually work out, you shouldn't have to deal with childish distractions. But I saw that I really wasn't going to have to worry about this because everyone there was like a Big happy family that have known each other for years even if they haven't. Everyone here was here to really work out And no one acts as if they are better than you here, instead some of the other clients might come over to help you learn a workout in a different strategy if you aren't getting the movement down as fast as you would like too! I began to see that Spartan wasn't a drama show only drama free zone and when you choose a gym like spartan, you will be able to concentrate better on your workouts! The level of Friendliness from everyone is still there even after I decided to do a month to month contract instead of paying daily. I felt like I was at the right place at the right time if that makes sense, like I hit the lotto because the workouts were challenging and I knew that's what I needed. I know I have the mentality Where I need to be pushed. If I were to workout by myself at home or somewhere like a at your own risk type of gym, I wouldn't go because I have already tried that way before. There is a rotation of trainers for each workout or you can sign up for open gym or do both, whichever you prefer. The classes they offer are a mix of cardio and strength toning, so you aren't just toning but burning calories too and where I was coming from before didn't have much cardio mixed in. But they also offer open gym if you are experienced and want to do it all on your own. They also don't get frustrated with you when you arent getting a move down, instead they keep working with you till you do. It's a great mix and each class still continues to challenge me. Spartan works with you to make sure you are doing the movements correctly and they really do have alot of patience for clients like me who struggle learning a workout. The prices are very reasonable too! I wish I would of done my research and went to this gym first, I am forever grateful for finding spartan gym! Thank you for being so patient with me as I continue into my fitness journey!

This is a great place…read more I wasn't sure what to expect when I signed my 7-year-old up for BJJ classes, but we've all been pretty thrilled with the experience. The coaches do a great job running sessions with a wide range of ages and abilities. They strike a perfect balance between keeping things fun and keeping things serious. It happened to be super close to where I was staying so I went to check them out. Now that I've been to a few classes, I can say that even if I hadn't been staying close, I'd travel to get my training here! I was really impressed with the facility upon walking in. Honestly, years of driving down Old York Rd., I never noticed this place on the corner but looks are definitely deceiving from the outside. I was actually intimidated by how much space there was! I'm really glad there were water fountains too because I had forgotten my water bottle. Anyway, I was able to make it to mostly the midday gi classes that start at 11:30 and one evening nogi class and was glad to get instruction from different instructors, all black belts, and to spar with belts of all different levels. The academy where I train regularly in LA county is fairly young so we don't have too many higher level belts to train with so it was fun to continuously get challenged. I really enjoyed the focused skill training and the ample amount of time left in class to just roll. One thing that stuck out to me was that there was always room for everyone to start from standing instead of seated. Most academies I've been to start from sitting so I don't get much experience from standing, where all fights start from anyway so I was happy about that. All of this is to say that I will definitely be back!
