I have been traveling a lot lately and have been searching Yelp to find good boxes. I'm looking for a well established box with excellent coaching & programming. Oh, and good parking. The reviews of the members are very helpful in gaining insight to the workings of the box. As I have been visiting other boxes, I long for my own box and fellow athletes at Crossfit Active Performance (CFAP) and realize that my own review is long overdue. Visitors and those in the area who are looking for an EXCELLENT box need to know how AWESOME CFAP is!! The search is over!! This is the right box for you!!!!
I was never an athlete in high school or college. I was the girl in junior high who had to WALK halfway through the annual 1 mile run test for physical fitness. Ironically, I picked up running after I had my second daughter 8 years ago. I ran several half marathons & smaller races, but my body didn't show that I was athletic. The license to eat carbs before the race always left me with super tight shorts on race day. I also had a membership at a local gym for years. Sometimes, I did 3 sets of 15 biceps curls, tricep extensions, leg abductors/adductors, etc. You get the point. I just did what I felt and it didn't give me the results that I wanted. Neither did doing a year of yoga.
My husband started crossfit at Crossfit Active Performance 6 months before I did. I was leery to try something new, but I couldn't refute his results and his excitement to work out. After months of urging, I started my series of 5 On-Ramp classes. I've noticed that a lot of boxes don't have this, but it is crucial to learn some standard movements & the expectations of the box with an On-ramp/beginner type classes. I was sore in crazy places that I never knew you could be sore!! Yet, I went back because I wanted to see what my body could do.
I started going to the 6am WODs with my husband twice a week. Every morning, I would drive in feeling queasy, like meeting someone after school to get beat up. (Sometimes, I still do!! Haha!!) I'd look at the WOD and think, how can I do that??? Well, I only had one hour of class, so somehow it was gonna get done...and I did!! I would drive home on Cloud 9 feeling so amazed at what I had accomplished during the WOD!! After about 3-4 months, I increased my WODs to 3x a week. After 6 months, I wanted to increase my progress, so I started going 4x a week. Crazy, right?? But my body could handle it. I just showed up, trusted the programming and the coaches to make sure I was doing the movements correctly. As a result, I have become the strongest and the healthiest that I have ever been!! Before Crossfit, I could NEVER do a real "manly" push-up, but in April, I did about 150 in one day (catch-up during the push-up challenge), with good form, of course!! Also, after 14 months, I just realized my dream of doing a kipping pull-up without the aid of any bands!! I could've cried that day. I knew that I could do it one day...I had to just show up and keep getting stronger!!
This is where the importance of knowledgeable coaches comes in...
I could have NEVER become stronger and the athlete that I am today without the EXCELLENT programming at CFAP and the EXCELLENT coaches who ALWAYS demand the highest level of technique and safety. The WODs are expertly and thoughtfully planned in advance by the owners Scott and Markus, who lead by example in working hard & eating clean!! The strength movements will always coordinate with the movements in the WOD. They are never random. Also, I never feel unsure about what I'm doing because the coaches will always demonstrate the movements before the WOD and of course, what not to do. I have learned volumes from Coaches Scott, Markus, Cameron, Ryan, Mike, and Janece!! You can't miss them!! They're the ones with the raddest bodies!!
