I was greatest kindly when I arrived and asked to sign a check in log stating my business and the time I arrived. I very much appreciate that process is in place. I arrived early and was offered tea, coffee, or water while I waited. I was given freedom to look around the facility while I waited if I was interested in doing so. I found myself drawn to this really fun finch enclosure where you can watch the birds play. It was in the library and board game area. The facility was bright, well lit, clean, smelled great and marked with directional signs everywhere. When my scheduled time arrived for my tour I was greeted by Kristin with smiles and a welcoming handshake. She was very knowledgeable on the property and provided me with physical informational documents to take as well as information during our tour. Both the studio and one bedroom were in great condition. I appreciated that the balconies were cement not wood so it provided a safer more sturdy feeling. The dinning hall was also very impressive. The room itself had high ceilings with great architecture. Overall great trip and lots to think about.

From growing their own herbs on display to the VR headsets that take residents to another location. They really do their best to provide top notch care for their residents. We got to sample some of the food they serve each day and it was very delicious. They have various activities planned each day. Cats and dogs are also allowed! Mostly concoction of lots of vegetables over a biscuit or rice. It's wholesome food but not very appealing. The food is not hot and usually only luke warm and frequently cold. Aides serve it however they want. Often there are no napkins. Doesn't seem to be a process for serving food. Housekeeping ? It appears the don't clean residents rooms or dining area tables and floor. Management doesn't seem to manage. Lots of Directors but rarely see them. I don't believe they know what's going on in Memory care. My daughter spoke with the Resident Care director about dirty floor in dining room. Her response was "it's not my department". Choose carefully.

I have attended various events at this place, and once a year I brought our senior saints from church to their event in March and their staff was very friendly and happy to see us. I planned to this again this year but just got a call from Cheryl who basically told me that events are for people who are interested in their place as a future home. Well, that's a bad thing to say to an influencer on this topic. Within a year we had 2 familes move into Samaritas Senior LIving of Grand Rapids. And last year, I did meet a old work colleague who actually moved to Covenant Living. My point to her was "you never know when someone will need a place like this in the future", as my friends had to make that decision, last year. If I'm going to spend my last days on earth, leave my home, move to a new place, it better be a friendly, happy place and they should not be greedy with an emphasis on money.

After several incidents, UTI's from not changing her diaper, several falls, many cuts and bruises, leaving her unattended on the toilet, and missing items, my wife finally had to move her to a different facility. Two days in and the quality of care is amazing. They check on her a minimum of every 2 hours. When she rings the bell, someone actually shows up in a timely fashion. They wheel her to the dinning room instead of bringing meals into her room at no extra charge. Porter Hills is building a big new expansion and they have a skeleton crew working to help pay for the new build. Be very careful before committing your love ones to this institution.

Absolutely deplorable. Would not recommend this place to anyone. Do not believe "what you've…read moreheard". The aids require a ton more training and/or better vetting during recruitment and hiring. The administration is aloof and was contentious when discussing the care (or lack thereof) of our mother. Important note: The sales people are great! No doubt. But they aren't the ones providing the service. It's about revenue. Remember that! My siblings and I all now live out of state. We relied on a lot their former reputation. Our mother was not treated with dignity (left on the toilet unattended at times) and that was only when they "got around to" responding to her calls to use the restroom. She had multiple UTI's during her short time (6 months) and had fall related injuries that were not reported in acceptable detail or in a timely manner. (**And then later charged us for the wound care for injuries they didn't even deem necessary to share. Ridiculous) She felt like the moment she arrived, she was a burden to the staff. She was afraid to bother them and afraid to tell her children (us) so we "don't make it worse for her" The staff, especially evenings, were gruff and annoyed with her. ALL because she needed the very assistance she was paying to receive. Unacceptable. Whatever the reputation WAS prior to our decision to move her to this "premier senior facility" has long passed and in our experience, completely untrue today. Knowing what I know now, I would not let these people watch my dog overnight much less care for our mother one day longer. We have since moved her from this sad situation. After giving notice, we did not hear from the administration for almost a week and on the day we came with our truck, not one person there even asked why or where she was headed. Apparently They just let people come with a truck and take someone's entire belongings and don't ask a single question to stop by to ask anything. Trolly after trolly moving what was left of her personal items, (many missing with no follow up from PH) It was just more evidence that our mother was right about the complaints she would barely share. This is not written in an emotional state. We have since found her a better place. This is written as a warning and a plea to those who consider Porter Hills and take Yelp reviews under serious consideration. If you should choose this place for your loved one, plan on being VERY involved in the day to day needs, believe your loved one when they tell you about mistreatment and keep a close eye on the care they receive and more importantly, what they don't receive. I wish I had ONE kind thing to say. Honestly I do. However, there isn't anything I can point to. Due to the Yelp rating system, I'm force to even give one star. The stress and setbacks Porter Hills caused our mother and our family is impossible to overstate. Thankfully we were able to make a merciful and swift change before things became worse. Consider other options.
