Whenever I'm not sure of where to go or what to do, My friends and I hit up the Adelaide casino to mull it over. Generally we do our mulling on the deck upstairs where there is a corner bar, ample seating and live music or maybe we'll grab a cocktail in the lounge downstairs before we decide which area of the Casino to grace with our presence. Really we're spoiled for choice with 5 bars to choose from: The Chandelier, Balcony, Grandstand and Express bars and the Loco cocktail lounge. The chandelier bar is quite impressive, it's very new and sparkly with a really nice selection of wines & spirits. If sports is more your thing then the Grandstand is for you and then you can have a dance in the Balcony bar if your legs allow. The Adelaide Casino also has a number of eateries. There is the north restaurant, which is classy a la carte, Signals Bistro, slightly less classy more suited for lunch, The Casino buffet and Cafe Junction for cheaper eats. The Adelaide Casino does need a bit of a face lift, and sometimes I wish people would dress up for the occasion, but it's Adelaide's only Vegas so I guess we'll have to make do. read more

After going to Crown casino(Melbourne), The Star(Sydney), Genting Highlands(Malaysia), and Singapore's Casino, Adelaide casino is really really small and in certain areas, you'd feel they are incomparable. I miss all the fun that comes with 24 hours entertainment in Genting, the large number of new slots pokies, huge machines and deck games that's in Star, and the number of restaurants that surround the Crown Casino. Like most Casino's there's still plenty to offer, even if gambling is not your thing. A hallway with large marble pillars, mark the entrance to 2 levels of gaming, but the big question on my mind is, what the hell happened to the horse racing game? Cheap meals, and buffet style dining is available with a beer garden outside, and cocktail bar downstairs. Upstairs also lies a balcony bar where you'll usually find a cover band of some description rocking out onstage most evenings. The thing I want to write about the Casino which has been left out by everyone else is the very famous Casino Schnitzel Challenge. They only run it or a few weeks during the year but it is amazing. You pay $12 for a pint of Carlton Draught and an eighteen inch schnitzel with salad and chips and your choice of sauce. The idea is if you finish the whole thing including the beer you get offered a tacky t-shirt. Which in theory doesn't sound like that great of a reward but it has become a famous food challenge in Adelaide and is always very popular when that time of year comes around. I went here for my 18th bday and won 50 bucks on the lightning machine on a 5 cent bet. I think that although there's heaps of machines here to choose from I think that there's an aspect of excitement missing from the casino. I'm excited to go and try the buffet here one day. I think if you love playing the ding ding's (pokies) then you'll love it here. I heard that they used to give out free drinks here and it would be totally awesome if they could bring that back! I love the dress code policy of Australian casinos: There is none. You don't have to wear a fancy dress and can just walk in in shorts and flip flops. However, when we were there for New Year's Eve to have a quick gamble before going for dinner, it was a bit different. And it was packed! You'll find heaps of pokies here, roulette tables, black jack tables and everything you want when going to a casino. There's no special prevalent scene or type of people but it's just a mix of everything; young and old, locals and tourists. It wont take you long to find a bar either because there are plenty and service is quick. Overall, I like this casino, even though I've been to nicer and bigger ones. I hate to admit it but I used to regularly frequent this place. No, not to gamble, I have much more sophisticated ways of losing money, but rather because they had cheap drinks and quiet spots where I could sit and read a book before I caught the train home. I also had a friend who would regularly come here with me, but that was because we had such opposite tastes in late night venues that the only place we could agree on was the Casino. Hey, they had a dance floor which was good enough for me (even though they only ever played commercial pop). What I really like though is the grand hall. Okay, they have ruined it by dumping a whole heap of gaming tables on the ground floor, but at least it still retains its former glory. I also remember watching a world cup match here with a friend, and it is always great watching a sporting match surrounded by passionate fans. Today I celebrated my bro's birthday at the Casino Buffet with the family. There originally was a smorgasboard style restaurant, then they changed it to a la carte, now it's changed back again. I'm not the biggest fan of buffets usually, but this one has a really good selection of roast meats, salads, casseroles and vegie options. If you like seafood you'll go hog-wild on the side filled with prawns, oysters and other gifts from the sea (like I saw a family doing earlier). Make sure you leave plenty of room for dessert as there's alot to tempt the sweet tooth. The choc mousse and cream-filled brandy snaps were heavenly. Although not a gambler, I definitely have an appreciation for casinos and I actually think Adelaide's Skycity is pretty decent. Plus I'm sure if you asked any of the proficient gamblers who reside here that they would also not have too many complaints. Regarding the setting that is anyway. Apart from the gambling talk, the two story layout works quite well- although the much anticipated renovation will do wonders, I'm sure. There are also cocktail bars, restaurants, a food court, a sports bar, a nightclub (with a bit of a weird crowd on the d-floor), live music... in all, it is a fairly lengthy list. If I were to do a vast comparison I would have to conclude that Skycity is definitely not up to the standard of Melbourne's Crown Casino, however it does shit all over Sydney's (I am yet to see the newly renovated version though). Also for the record, even the Casinos in Monaco aren't really that grand- so Adelaide you're doing well. Having said that, I have never been to Vegas and so I have a feeling ignorance is bliss in this case. Ha. In the end, it's a mix bag. I don't mind it though. Love this casino. We enjoyed the Pokies and left with about $20 more than we spent. Good modern machines with loud fun noises and music. We did not buy any drinks in the bars and there is a outside smoking area with soft cushions. Opulent and glitzy. I love the masonic hall style ceiling and lights in the foyer and the security guard was pleasant. It is easy to load up a visitor's card with cash at the special machines in this casino. read more
