I went online to see how long the waits were for a smog emissions test. Every single location had a 10 minute wait. Great. We headed to the one closest to our next destination which is off Raintree and Northside. You must drive up to a gate where you will take a ticket. Follow the road to the building where smog checks are done. We didn't even wait 10 minutes before our turn came up. Staff motioned us to drive forward when they were ready and took our ticket. The staff has you turn off your engine and restart it again. You are asked to leave your car running and to leave the car momentarily. There are small rooms for customers to wait while the test happens. It took maybe 3 minutes at most. We paid the test fee, passed the test and drove away. Smog test results are sent electronically to MDV. All we need to do is renew the registration. Staff are super efficient. read more

Zero stars if I could, just created the worst experience I have had interacting with another "human" if they can be called that. Completely unhelpful when requesting information in order to pass there inspection and was instead told I could "go F* myself and get off the property". Definitely was profiled into an assumption and was not only completely disrespected by this women but after kicking me out she even sent one of her dogs (same guy who failed my car) to try to intimidate me off the property when I was already leaving. Now I have a car that I have dealership mechanics green lighting and this department telling me no with zero explanation or resolution. I don't think he knew how to count because he was stressed out and partially intimidated when I whipped out a $20 to pay for a $17 smog fee. He said " I can take cash but would prefer a card" lol. I ended up just giving the guy my Amex card to get out of there sooner. Cash is king but not for people who can't count. Not sure how those types of people can get these jobs. They always are quick and efficient here. Follow the easy instructions, wait for them to test, pay, and you're on your way with your passing paperwork (assuming you do pass). This was the first time I've needed to get my car tested in Arizona; quite a different experience from back East. Drive up to the gate on the north side, take a number ticket, and drive through the gate to make a 180 degree turn. Hang on to that ticket because the inspector will ask you for it. Get in the appropriate lane for your vehicle (read the signs). Stay in your car until you drive it in the bay. You'll need to turn off the A/C and open your gas cap door. They'll let you either stay in the car while they inspect it, or you can wait in this convenient little safety booth next to your car. It took about 5-7 minutes, and $20 later I was on my way. A helpful sign tells you which lane to get in, depending on what type of vehicle you have. Another sign conveniently estimates the wait time, and it was pretty accurate. Supposedly your inspection information is uploaded to the AZMVD within a few minutes. read more

I have never had my emissions tested since I've lived in AZ (2 years) and when it came time to renew I was required to get them tested, so I picked a location which they have a ton to chose from and convenient times for everyone, and headed that way. I was a bit thrown off by having to pull a ticket then go through the drive way up to one of the open garage doors, the guys were getting all of these cars in and out within 10 minutes. The guy who was directing me was really nice and seemed surprised that I had thanked him, the guy who did my testing was very direct but was also nice. Make sure to check the estimated wait times online, if you plan it ahead and choose the right time you can have a better experience. For second time in a row we had fast and courteous service. Mero performed the inspection and he was super fast, friendly and professional (he is a young man with beard and curly hair in a pony tail, if you see him pay attention, we were in a different line and moved to his because he was super fast). Other than that, the location is kind of tricky, I never remember how to get here, always have to Google it, but once you are there you can get in and out in about 15 minutes if the line is not too bad. I left this place about an hour ago and debated on writing. There appears to be a very loud woman in charge here. She screams at her employees and rants around the emission area. I stood there in disbelief as how she treated the guys working on testing our vehicles. The poor guy doing my test was great. However, someone needs to check in on that loud woman. My visit was relatively quick, the service provider was friendly, and is one of the only emission test centers in the area. The test cost $17 dollars and be prepared to wait 20 if you go in the middle of the day. There is a small office that you would go in if you didn't pass your emissions test, but otherwise you stay in or with your car the entire time. The crazy State of Arizona has this stupid rule that you have to get a smog check from one of their ADEQ centers (Arizona Department of Environmental Quality). Well, I took one of my cars there to go through the tests....it failed because the Service Engine light was on....what?! Why? What does that have to do with anything? Ok, so I go to a mechanic and he fixes it and resets the light. 3 days later, I go back to the ADEQ center and it fails again! Why? Because they said that the computer in the car is "not ready"....what? What's that?! To get an answer, I have to park my car and go inside an office...out comes a manager and he says that the computer in my car is not "reset and ready" and so I have to wait until it is before I come back. Perplexed, I asked..."how will I know when it's ready"? He says..."I don't know, ask the mechanic". I say..."wait, I have to go back and ask him when it's ready"? He says..."well, that's the only way you will know for sure. The other option is that you drive around for a few days and hope that the car's computer is ready and then bring it back in for a test. However, if it fails again, you will have to take it to a location in downtown Phoenix and have a mechanic check it out...it's not convenient or cheap". I leave extremely frustrated and angry. Two visits in one week! I needed to take both Mom's and my car in for emissions testing (first one since we bought our Priuses in 2010) before purchasing two-year registrations** through servicearizona.com. $20 cash per test, and the testing takes less than five minutes***, or so you hope, because some of the people here perspire and leave AWFUL body odor on your driver seat! The rep who handled Mom's car last week (3'ish pm) was much cleaner (and not as big) as the guy that did my car test two days ago (630 pm). Last week's tester was also older, friendlier, and knew how to bid me goodbye with a smile. As soon as I got home from the test two days ago, I changed shirts and went back to my car, armed with a can of Lysol disinfectant. I then went back to the apartment and took a shower. Lesson learned: Visit earlier in the day to avoid bacteria and sweat-drenched testers from contaminating your driver chair! I wonder if I may get my car tested earlier in the year to avoid this malady in the future? If not, then I suppose I need to cover my seat with plastic sheets, or a towel I don't mind throwing away... **Registering two years at a time saves money. This year, I saved about $70 total for both cars, and another $40 next year, since we won't need smog checks for another two years! ***There were at least two sites online that gave estimated wait times at different valley locations. One even provided webcam links to show you real-time captures, so you can see just how busy each location was. Pretty nifty! Great location to check your carbon footprint and do the global warming / global cooling dance. It is mandated that you get your vehicle tested once they turn 5 years old or older so you can then shell out some serious ducats for a new shiny sticker. I have been to several locations throughout the valley with company vehicles as well as my own and this one so far is the best. My older Mercedes turbo diesels were like a couple of mosquito foggers and no longer could bare this "do si do" and they were happy to let me know. Sadly I miss my 300TD and 300TDT built in Stuttgart with over 2 tons of bulldozing madness. Auf Wiedersehen! I arrived at 4pm and was out the door in 10 minutes. "Ol Blue" passed her nine year inspection without having a tube stuck up her rear. She had passed her seven year inspection and I didn't expect any problems. After all, she had had her stomach pumped, her joints lubed, all of her arteries replaced, her belt replaced, her shoes replaced and rotated, her blinders with cracks replaced plus survived a left rear leg cosmetic mishap. I corralled her into a line with four other horse and buggys while she waited patiently as the heat started to rise in the early morning. When her turn came I handed the ADEQ gentleman the ticket and was told to stand in the booth while he checked her pedigree registration, her intake, her cranking, her running lights, her malfunction indicator and her connector integrity. Luckily, she wasn't exposed to an evasive physical exam that would have made her strut her stuff. Why push her in her old age? Yippee "Ol Blue" is OBD Compliant and should be good until year eleven unless she follows "Big Orange" and "Brownie" to the glue factory before then. read more
