Feels like you are stepping in to a Food Network You Gotta Eat Here! episode. Portions are enormous. Ordering a "small" fries gets you enough fries to feed a small army. Burgers come with double patties and have some serious weight to them. Even asking for extra ketchup gets you a coffee cup of ketchup. While I didn't have the poutine it looked amazing, if not overwhelming. Shakes were good. The owners/staff were as nice as can be. Had to knock off a star for the decor which is entirely lacking and perhaps there is a bit of quantity over quality. First time visiting Brantford, taking a journey down memory lane, we searched for the perfect late night noshing joint. The Admiral shone brightly on the corner, drawing us in. I was told to go grab a table wait to be surprised by the food! The place is not fancy by any means. If you must, you could call this place grungy. The place is clean but an old fashioned greasy spoon and at 230am when the bars are letting out, It's, well, definitely an interesting place to people watch if you decide to stick around. Ok so we ordered a meal to share: One cheeseburger loaded with two patties, mozzarella and cheddar cheese and fresh iceberg lettuce and tomatoes, etc all the fixings a burger should have minus the bacon, sigh...this burger is f'n huge!!! Next the small order of fries----SMALL!??! this could feed a family of four!! And pop on the side. I definitely didn't eat most of the burger and I slowly munched on 1/4 of the fries as we continued to people watch. This family owned business is a greasy gem in the rough and I loved it. Next time it's giant poutine and milkshakes, or maybe a giant gyro?? Open all night, I'm told I have to come after 3am so I can meet the older man, the father of this place, who has a dark mysterious reputation of his own. Gigantic portions of poor quality food. I think that pretty much sums up our experience here. We got a chicken fingers meal and super sub. The chicken fingers meal was a huge takeout box filled so full with dark brown (dirty oil?) fries and 3 chicken strips. It was $14 and honestly everything fries and chicken was so dark brown it looked and tasted gross. The chicken strips were so over cooked the hurt to bite into. They didn't offer any dipping sauce and when I asked I was offered a small styrofoam cup of ketchup. Wow, thanks. My husband got the "Super Sub". The moniker is very misleading as it was anything but super. He found the meats off texture and tasted no quite right. He did not eat more than 2 bites before it hit the garbage. Quality is poor and I was the only person in here and it took almost half an hour so. I don't think you will be missing much if you give this place a pass. read more

Stumbled across this place while looking for someplace open on July2 at 2pm 3 places we walked by were closed. Didn't expect much because the restaurant looked dated. We ordered a seafood sub, a small fry with side of gravy , and a order of cheese balls and 2 pops. Omg the cheese balls with a garlic sauce are amazing like 24 balls in the order. The small fries filled the square takeout container it could feed 4 people. And the sub I split it with my teen daughter we ate 1/2 the balls, the whole sub and 1/4 of the fries. The fries were like really good chip wagon fries, the gravy was a nice rich dark beef gravy. Everything was soooo good. Bathroom is tiny but clean. The staff were very nice. read more

Don't order a large poutine if you're just one. And if you do, call a cardiologist beforehand and set up a bypass surgery. The small is HUGE, I don't even want to see a large. That being said, it was really good. Not the best poutine I've ever had, but really good. They layer it so it's not just a layer of gravy on top of a pile of dry fries; there's gravy thru the entire thing. Perfect. I only wish they did meat on the poutine. Dropped in for lunch and order a burger and fries , the burger was huge but did not have any flavour to it , very bland but had generous amounts of toppings on it . The fries , 70% of fries were old and dried out and the rest were fine , obviously they mixed old with new , could not eat the old ones , had to toss them , but they did give you a big portion . One of the best greasy spoons I have been to. The bacon double cheese burger is insane. Double means three patties of meat cooked over a wood fire. Deep fries back bacon and a cup of cheese. All on a kiaser bun. Searved with a ton of fresh cut fries. The poutin is also giant size. Enough to feed four people. There is an item on the menu called the admiral's junk pile. I've always usually had a good experience. Use to get there all the time. Not sure what's happened but I got their poutine tonight and it was awful! There were nothing but dried out pieces of cardboard! Seems they were fried earlier in the night and weren't sold so when I called they just retried them and sent them out. I got nothing but thin pieces of skin which I could feel the dirt in my mouth. I called and told them they asked my address. I guess maybe cause I wasn't a frequent customer lately she didn't care that my fries were dried out and cold not to mention not even close to the portion size it use to be. Her explanation was maybe it was the bottom of the container. Not sure that explains why they were dried out and cold. Bottom line is they obviously don't care about customers satisfaction. Any other place would offer to replace especially in this time where every customer counts. Well she has lost this household not to mention a lot more that will follow me. Oh well, I hope their holding back offering to replace the dried out pieces of cardboard I got was worth the customer base they just lost. Such a disappointment! My first visit was roughly 1992 and this has been a regular destination since. This is a classic Greek greasy spoon restaurant filled with local characters at all times of day and night. The food is to die for (when looking for greasy spoon fix, not 5 star steak). The Admiral doesn't pretend to be anything than what it is... Good food at a fair price. Contrary to many greasy spoons though I have the feeling the burger platter is mostly homemade. The burger is amazing as are the fries. I have yet, in 22 years, been able to finish an entire burger platter and I would be described as a big dude. I'd also recommend you get the cheeseballs to go.
