There were a couple of schedule snags so that's why it's 4 instead of 5 stars. The first time we were waiting over a half hour and finally asked and receptionists checked. Apparently it was a nurse meeting that ran over. They gave a chit to Subway in the cafeteria while the meeting finished. The last couple of visits had to be rescheduled so the nurses could have another meeting, but at least this time we got notice. So, the waiting area is nice and comfortable, with a snack area with drinks and small treats. There are a bunch of puzzles, books, magazines, fish tank, and TV. There is an onsite masseuse for everyone on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and every Friday they bring out the big guns with chocolate candies (instead of starburst variety) and fresh baked cookies. I liked the doctor, who was very patient and answered all our questions, and although the nurse was a bit of a ding bat she was really sweet. Last but not least there is a graduation ceremony where the patient walks down the hallway to the music of Pomp and Circumstance Walking March, through sprouting bubbles, rings a bell 3 times, and gets a bouquet and gift bag. It was all a little cheesy, but I got teary eyed. I hope I never have to go here, but if I do I feel I would be in good hands and well taken care of.

I have mixed feelings. First pregnancy and I decided to come here. The first doctor I saw was…read moreOmaira Colon. She doesn't do hospital births any more so I only saw her once and then they switched me. Her attitude was "I've done this a million times" and she went over everything quickly and in little detail. I get that it's YOUR millionth time but it's my first. They switched me to Maude Vance after that. She has little personal skills if any. She walks into your room already talking about baby names and whatnot without even a "Hi." She says all the information so fast and direct it just goes right over me and I can't remember anything when the appointment is over. She seems very knowledgeable but I get the vibe of I'm here to get paid and get out. She asked the same two questions every time and if you don't have one question she offers up no advice and she's on her way out the door. Cool, again it's my first time I don't know what I don't know! She suggested I get the RSV vaccine but I wasnt the correct month range at the rsvp season time. She said no need for a birth plan. Whenever she measures me I'm either too big or too small and then she schedules another ultrasound. Not saying how big or small I am and why it's necessary. Actually delivery time, did multiple interventions which I didn't want and she literally said "it's my job to cut the cord" when somebody asked if anyone wanted to do it. The reason why they are getting three stars is the scheduling. They give you one time to come in and you either say yes or no. The main front desk lady is kind of mean, the one with the flashy loud keyboard. I saw numerous new ladies who were always in training at the front desk across my 9 month visit. For people who don't have a job, it's fine come in whenever. I have to take time off of work to come in. They do open from 8-5 so I'm able to come at 8, but only days where Vance comes in early, otherwise she starts her day at 9am. Another inconvenience. I always have to fight with them, no I'm not going to come twice in one day because you can't get me an ultrasound and see the doctor back to back. Then the doctor thinks I need an ultrasound every other week and that tacks on a while another hour and scheduling mess to figure out. The NP and ultra sound techs have all been very nice and efficient. I usually don't have to wait too long in the lobby or in the exam room. Also they draw blood and do testing here too which is very convienent. I did have to go to a third party to get genetic testing done. Their check in process is a little bit long and tedious online. I've only had to pay my $90 co pay for when I have an ultrasound visit scheduled. Otherwise just a regular doctor checkup it doesn't ask me to pay the copay on the check in process. When I had my very first visit, they had us see the financial lady after we were done with the appointment. Since I had goven All the insurance info when I scheduled before she had all the estimated costs written out for vaginal and c section birth, as well as the ultrasounds. She then charged us $500 for the first ultrasound and said the next one that we would have would be around $700. A little while later as I was looking at my insurance online it said that my insurance had payed Denali OBGYN for the amount of the ultrasounds and that I needed to ask for a refund. They claimed that they charge everyone for the first one even though they already ran my insurance. So they provided me with a copy of my statements so far and that I have a $500 credit on my account. They said at the end they will refund me if I still have a balance with them. I haven't had to pay anything since then except my $90 copay. I had to ask them about this process and where that money went, they didn't provide any of that info voluntarily, like "hey just so you know you have a credit on your account since your insurance paid us as well as you payed." It might just be how they have to do things or how the insurance side works but it was kind of annoying. I would see Kilby if I had to come here again. I saw him twice while mine was on vacation and he was awesome. That's all I can think of for now but I wasn't thrilled with this place. Good luck if you are on a search.

My first appt here was with Sarah Schultz and her MA Crystal. I was touched by how gentle,…read morethoughtful, and informative they both were, especially because I was really nervous. Sarah did a really great job at talking through everything with me and making me feel like I was in charge. When I had to come back for a procedure, I was r/s with Dr. Omaira Colon. I had a completely different experience with her. I wasn't told they would be taking a biopsy or urine sample until I showed up, so I was totally unprepared for either (I would've taken painkillers in advance for the first). They handed me the consent form for the biopsy without even telling me what it was for, and I had to specifically ask to talk to Dr. Colon beforehand. When I was talking through the procedure with Dr. Colon, she seemed annoyed and unempathetic about my hesitations. She offered me aspirin for the pain and expected that to take care of everything (when I knew aspirin 5 minutes before a procedure wasn't going to help me). During the procedure, I had no idea what she was doing next at any point, and I was experiencing a lot of cramping and pain. I felt extra tense and scared because she kept moving forward in the procedure without telling me what she was doing, which probably made it a lot more painful that it needed to be because I couldn't relax. Throughout the procedure, I was wringing my hands in pain and she never once paused to ask if I was okay. If she ever verbalized what she was doing, it was never to ask for my permission and it was typically as she was already halfway into doing it. At the end of the procedure, as I was still in the middle of really painful cramping, she goes, "Wasn't as bad as you thought, right?" I guess she was right- it was worse. Overall, it felt like a completely violating experience. I already had a lot of anxiety over going to the ob-gyn (which I think is pretty common) and now that is going to be increased 10 fold.

Then my nurse taking vitals was Paige very sweet & professional, reiterated everything to make sure there was no mistakes & I can appreciate that. Unfortunately I don't recall the operating room staffs names they were wonderful making me comfortable. In the recovery are I had Page & another nurse & that nurse also top notch! Surgery Center of Alaska employees Valencia and Nancy in the billing department only care about…read moremoney and do not care about people. I wanted to share my experience, hoping that this will help other people not get bullied into paying bills upfront. If you have insurance, which I do, you are not obligated to pay anything except for your deductible. I had unexpected surgery, and it got scheduled at the Surgery Center of Anchorage. I received a call from Nancy in the billing department regarding going over my insurance and payment. She told me the overall total was around $11,000. She then mentioned that I needed to pay the remainder of my deductible, $1,102.58. Then, I needed an additional $2,100.42 for what my insurance does not cover. Let me begin with that, and she had her math right. I told her that my responsibility is just my deductible, and then you can invoice me. I do not pay anything without knowing what I paid for and have a track record. I know my insurance. It is a $1500 deductible with a $3,500 max out of pocket and 80/20. However, this is not a typical guideline for a medical practice to pay upfront. On top of that, she refused to give me an invoice. Why would I hand anyone money blindly with no invoice before the surgery? I called my insurance, and they told me exactly what I thought they would and said I am only responsible for my deductible at this time if they ask for a collection. They are not following the guidelines that they are supposed to. I then called my PCP and explained the issue. She said to try and call back and speak to a manager. If they would not accept just my deductible, we can cancel the surgery with them and schedule it at Alaska Regional (Keep in mind that my surgery was one hour away now). I called back and asked to speak to a manager, waited on hold for almost 10 minutes, and then Valencia Elsberry picked up. I introduced myself and explained the situation and my conversation with Nancy. I also explained that I spoke to my insurance about how I am only responsible for my deductible at this time, and it is required to have an invoice. Valencia's said, "Well, that sounds nice, but that is not how it works here." I was so shocked by her choice of words and her delivery. Highly unprofessional and should not be in a manager role. I understand that they are a private practice, but that does not change that you still need to follow guidelines, and where is the care? Also, I wanted to point out this was my first surgery, and it came a little unexpectedly. They did nothing but stress me out the entire time. How are they in business if this is how they treat people? Looking at the other reviews, I am not the only one with the same experience. So.... that alone shows you this is an ongoing problem. Nancy and Valencia need to be held accountable for treating people and manipulating and bullying people into getting them to pay everything up front, even with insurance. With that said, I called back my PCP, and they canceled it at the Surgery Center of Alaska and scheduled me at Alaska Regional the same day. Alaska regional asked for my insurance information, and that was it! It was simple, stress-free, welcoming, and they took great care of me. I am so glad I stood up and switched. The insurance will take care of everything, and then I will receive an invoice for then I will be responsible for paying. That is the guideline, period. Surgery Center of Alaska only cares about money and does not care about people. However, they ended up losing $11,000. Interesting how that worked out. I have reported this company and hope they get a wide awakening, start caring for people and get a new entire team in the billing department. To anyone out there reading this, thinking about going here, I want you to remember you have the choice on where you go. Also, ALWAYS call your insurance and follow what the guidelines are. Although your insurance company will steer you in the right direction, they will tell you what other places they work. Remember, you have options, and you do not have to go here! The front desk staff was not helpful towards answering questions every time I would call. The front desk was not only unfriendly but they would talk to me in a cold and mean manner. My provider refused to answer my direct questions on the portal and via phone calls when I called every day. Instead, she billed me for "researching". When all I asked for was a referral- I did all the research myself. Not only did I feel like my care was dismissed but I was neglected and billed extra after messaging in the portal which I was not informed about.

They made the excuse that "other places are doing that too" and "you probably didn't realize since it was in the fine print on a form we had you sign." I'll take my business elsewhere.
