Tom and the crew were fantastic! I took a solo trip and my car broke down on the Blue Ridge Parkway (one of my nightmares)! I was two hours away from home and really needed the best support. I've been taken advantage of before when dealing with car issues, so I did my due diligence and read reviews on local car shops. They were able to do the diagnostic test at an affordable rate and got back to me before the end of the day. After researching long tow options, I decided to go with getting a AAA membership. I had to store my car at the shop for a week and trusted the team to care for it. This shop is honest and straight forward. I had heard about this place by a high recommendation from a neighbor / friend, and it was an excellent referral. I have an old Ford P/U that needed some attention (clutch, EGR). I took it in to have Kerry take a look at it. Usually you have to try and explain all your vehicle's little idiosyncrasies to the blank stares of mechanics, but Kerry instantly said "lets take it for a drive". We drove a few blocks around town with him behind the wheel and me talking about all the little quirks, what I wanted repaired and why. He was quick to explain to me a variety of things that could be the problem as well as how he would be able to tackle them. Back at his shop he popped the hood, he did some initial manual diagnostics while explaining to me all the while what he was doing and why. He was VERY thorough in explaining the causes of the problem and how to repair them as well as possible costs. He also WROTE EVERYTHING DOWN that we discussed for repair. I really liked this. There was no doubt about the things we talked about.. He confirmed TWICE with me the things I wanted fixed and explained the anticipated costs. He also said he would use his judgment in making sure we got the best part for the best price based on the age of the vehicle and anticipated future usage. He found a few other minor things while inspecting the vehicle and I made verbal approval for the addl repairs but the costs were minimal but the impact was great. I would highly recommend this shop. Very honest people. He didn't fix my car, but the phone call was great. I called and asked if he'd change the ignition switch in my VW Jetta. Kerry said no, not to bring my car in - he said that while he could do it, they weren't experts in Volkswagens so he couldn't be sure he'd do a good job, and it would be better for me to take my car somewhere else. How honest! Then, he gave me the phone number of a man to call who he thought COULD fix my car. Very cool guy. read more

Nothing like being over 500 miles from home and trusted mechanics and experiencing a car problem that cannot be ignored. Luckily 1) I'm a Yelper 2) Advantage Automotive was every bit as helpful as Yelpers suggested. Note: They have recently merged with Jack Smith Transmission. I called and spoke with Kerry, who was mentioned in other reviews. Kerry explained it was a short week for them (closed Thursday and Friday) and Monday was jammed but that they could take a look Tuesday. Not only did they take a look Tuesday, but they got the work done (no small job, either) by day's end for which we were very appreciative. Moral of the story is this: If you live in Asheville you're lucky to have this repair shop available. If you are visiting Asheville you're STILL lucky because these people will take care of you as if you were a local. Great place; great people. read more

I feel very comfortable turning my vehicles over to Kerry to diagnose and repair. He's very straight forward and up front with you, and will not take advantage of you. I may have to live in Asheville forever so Kerry can always be my mechanic. My beloved Nissan Frontier gave up the good fight on the drive to Asheville for a relocation. Based on a Yelp review and the shop's proximity to my hotel, we chose Advantage. Everything Eric said in his review is true. Kerry was friendly, honest, knowledgeable, candid. I just really couldn't ask for anything more. While it was a bummer to spend my first day in Asheville trying to get the truck back on the road, I am almost glad it happened as I now have an Asheville mechanic. More than that, if the truck is still running, I would drive a hundred miles to take it to Kerry. read more

I was traveling through, about 3 hours from home when my water pump gave out. The dealer in town could not tell me within a week when he could see me. Tom and Kerry were able to take a look and get me back on the road by early afternoon. After sitting around the shop for a couple of hours you can tell these folks are honest. I can't say enough about Kerry and his staff at Advantage Automotive. The local auto repair shop I had used since moving to the area informed me I had a stripped oil drain plug that they couldn't remove and consequently, I would need a new oil pan. The cost for a new oil pan replacement was estimated at about $500. I brought my car to Advantage for a second opinion. Kerry and his staff used a little old-fashioned ingenuity to get the old drain plug out and replaced it with a brand new one. The cost was only about $40. They could have thrown up their hands like the other shop and hoped to make many hundreds of dollars off me. Instead, they chose to be honest and ethical and in the process earned my continued business. They are now my regular repair shop. read more

This shop was a blessing. I found myself 400+ miles from home with with a car I couldn't drive home because of potential transmission problems. I yelped a few shops in the Asheville area and found this gem. When you're traveling with a 15-month old and a 2 and 1/2-year old and your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, you're not exactly holding the best negotiating card. The only thing you can hope for is an honest mechanic--and that's exactly what I found at Advantage Automotive. Tom was straightforward about what he knew/understood was going on, and he thought critically about alternatives to replacing the transmission. He was willing to try a much less expensive solution to see if the issue would resolve itself, when he could've easily suggested that we replace the transmission. He worked quickly and kept me informed throughout. He was not dismissive when I tried to explain what had happened, and he did not push his solutions on me. Instead, he explained what he suspected might be the problem and gave me space to decide what I wanted to do give the different options available to me. He walked me through some solutions, and I felt well-informed to make the decision that seemed right for me. I was in a tough situation and needless to say, meeting Tom was a gift. I went to Advantage Automotive for a pre-purchase inspection specifically because of the great reviews that Kerry got on Yelp. Well, y'all were right. He was very nice, did not speak down to me, and even took me around the truck and showed me all of the areas of concern visually which no mechanic has ever done for me before. My daughter was experiencing trouble with her brakes on her way down south. She stopped to have them checked out. They were able to service her right away. They charged less than we would have paid with our usual mechanic who is a friend of ours. Very fair prices. read more
