The amount of respect and self discipline this camp instills in these kids is incredible for both on and off the court.

The parking lot is medium size and during swim meets the church across the street was kind and allowed overflow parking, so the walk was not too far. During my younger years, the blocks were a bit like a very thick and durable plastic table and the backstroke hand rungs were sharp (not piercing) on my fingers. The top of the blocks could get slick and were on the flatter side. Some of the Klahaya swimmers expressed glee about how their pool had the "cleanest" blocks because they were flat. There was some debate on whether using slightly tilted and rough-surfaced blocks constituted cheating in a race. It was commonly agreed upon wedge technology for starting blocks counted as cheating. I was thankful for the flatter blocks because it helped me realize how much a rough surface on a block and a slight tilt could change the depth of a dive off a block and overall dive form. The pool was well designed for waiting for races both on the benches and behind the blocks, watching the swimmers from the bleachers or the side/end of the lanes, and a large grassy area next to the tennis courts provided space to spread out a blanket and/or chairs. Concessions were easy to find, though the line could flow into the walking path if long. Locker rooms were easy to access from the pool deck.

Membership is limited and the wait list to join takes a bit but those in the know, enjoy this little private community club. Starch-boy, our son, has enjoyed attending several birthday parties here. The staff is well versed in safety instruction and they have requirements of the swimmers to allow them into the deep ends of the pool. The facility is always clean, plenty of parking and the staff are always helpful. Only knock against it is the pool is only open seasonally.

One of the ways I got so tan during the summers was by playing tennis outdoors. Also, swimming, playing water polo, and working outdoors. So the summers, especially the years I took part in Innis Arden Tennis, were full of consistent plays on my name. Honestly I didn't mind it one bit, it added to the overall experience. I participated in the beginner to intermediate lessons/session(s) and did not partake in tournaments/matches between tennis clubs. For me playing tennis here was more social than competitive and a fun way to pass time during the day in the summers when my parents were at work. Those of us in the lessons tended to coordinate what session to take during the summer so we were guaranteed having at least one or two friends in the class. It was also fun to meet new people and see who signed up for the same session as us. Coaches/instructors vary and I had good ones. The tennis courts are well maintained and one of my favorite aspects of practice was picking up the tennis balls after running out or low during different drills. And then there were the times I'd hit a ball over the fence surrounding the courts into a tree, those ones could be a pain to find. At the end of the year there was a banquet for those who took part in tennis during the summer and different awards and participation items were handed out. My first year it was a trophy for a participation item, later it switched to t-shirts. I loved getting t-shirts and other attire for the sports I participated in, that formed the bulk of my wardrobe for a good many years growing up and into college. Tennis courts are located next to the Innis Arden Clubhouse and pool which was nice when racing from swim practice to tennis practice and needing to minimize travel time.

Due to many cars during the meets, there was a bit of a walk to get to the pool for competitions, but not really hills to make the walk difficult. The pool deck around the pool was small, so we came with the be extra considerate mentality when swimming here because everyone was cramped. My first-ever post-season swim meet was here in 1999. It was B-Champs, a meet for those who failed to make the time cuts for prelims. I loved the pool and how fun the meet was. There was more joy on the pool deck than I later observed at the meets reserved for the fast swimmers. If there was one hook for me competing the full 12 summer seasons I did, it was that first B-Champs in 1999 for me and that I would get to swim at the Sheridan Beach pool again if I continued competing. I loved the four-lane pool. It was a unique competition environment and a tight fit in the competition space that I liked. Outside the pool deck was concessions, a large grassy area, and a playground. Our coaches encouraged us not to waste our energy playing on the playground. We found that allowed for some healthy rebellion, playing for five to ten minutes during the meets to make sure we did not lose sight of the fact we were kids. The space did not lose its magic when I became a teenager.

The space was large, looked clean, and well laid out. We enjoyed the expansive family changing areas, different and a great surprise. Lockers are available, too for use while swimming in the large pool. The pool was separated in half. One half was composed of four lap lanes; good signage for those wishing to swim slow, medium or fast. The second half was also split in half, creating two smaller, square pools, one shallow (2-4 feet) the other deeper (4-5 feet). The shallow side held a water structure, shaped like a mushroom, that showered upon the kids splashing and playing in the area. (To turn this feature on, a lifeguard must be notified.) In order to be free to swim in the deep end (where there is a tube slide, which wasn't in use during our visit), one must prove to the lifeguards competency and skill - jump far enough in to hold your head underwater, swim the length of the pool without resting or stopping, and float or tread water for 30 seconds. This is a great tool for encouraging up-coming swimmers, as well as keeping people safe. Well done! After our swim session, our friends gave us a little tour of the class spaces, gymnasium, workout machines, free coffee/tea/hot cocoa, and kids/teen play and hang out spaces. It's a great facility and we look forward to coming back!

After a few years of happy learning alongside great friends in a nurturing environment and we sent our daughter off to Kindergarten with a full heart and a thirst for learning. April's Play School was a very peaceful place filled with laughter and respectful friends. A couple years following her final Pre K class, she decided to bring the same fun curriculum to an outdoor summer camp and invite older kids to join along as participants or even junior counselors. Our youngest joined in for a week of camp along with her cousins. They had an amazing time. It's so fun to know that the kids are just being kids (with supervision), in nature, making up games and stories, building forts or even doing a structured project like washing berries and making jam. They took hikes and collected bugs. They did kid stuff and got dirty and maybe a little sweaty and they just had a blast. I was thrilled to hear that Camp Roots was gearing up for a 6 week run this summer. I immediately signed my little one up for 3 weeks and my Freshman aged son up to participate in the volunteering program. I'm expecting the same old thing as last time: slightly dirty, extremely happy & tired kids, competing with each other to over share their accomplishments of the day with me over dinner. It's soul filling to drop the hyper academic stuff for a few weeks and watch the kids truly enjoy (fairly) unstructured summer play. Go Camp Roots!!!
