The admin does not care about you or your appointment. I had a receptionist laugh at me when an appointment she cancelled without confirming with me would be rescheduled to over a year from now. She then lied and said I received a confirmation by text. I checked again and nothing. No call. No response. Missed a day of school and paid an Uber 20 for nothing. He became in excruciating pain after a few weeks and had to go to urgent care. He walked into the dentist office to let them know he was in terrible pain the dentist would not see him and referred him to another dentist saying it's his wisdom teeth they need to come out. Went to the referral dentist and was told the cavity was not done properly and he actually needed a root canal. DO NOT USE THIS OFFICE IF YOH HAVE OTHER OPTIONS! After spending considerable time on the phone with my insurance to find out what dentist I could see in network I was told to call Gateway Advantage Dental. I told the receptionist I needed to be seen urgently as I was experiencing considerable pain in my jaw from two teeth. She informed me to come in as a walk in and that I had to be there by 3pm in order to be seen. I told her I had no vehicle so I would have to take the bus there and that I was headed that way immediately. I confirmed with her that the location was at the Oregon Clinic at Gateway and she said yes and they were on the third floor. I arrived at 2:30 but was told I was at the wrong location and I needed to go to the next building over but on arriving there I was told again I was at the wrong location and sent back to the building I had just left. I was now getting panicky as it was then 2:45. I tried calling the office to find out where they were but no answer which was exactly what I had gone through for an hour prior to heading out. I looked up Advantage Dental Gateway Portland in maps on my phone and saw I was too far of a distance away to walk there and arrive by 3:00 so again I had to go by bus but my bus was off schedule by ten minutes. I finally arrived at the correct location at 3:10 and told the male staff member at the front desk I had been sent to the wrong location and got there as quickly as I could. He told me sorry come back tomorrow I told him I was in considerable pain, I had called telling the staff I was on my way there and would have been there thirty minutes prior to 3pm if I hadn't been given the wrong location but basically was told too bad, bye. Come back tomorrow. I am in so much pain right now and my jaw is just throbbing like crazy. This is going to be one long painful sleepless night now and to say that I am extremely pissed off would be a huge understatement. Normally I would never say something like this but I REAĹLY hope one day this rude staff member finds himself in the same situation that I am currently in. So unprofessional. Don't answer the phone, and when I went in to schedule an appointment for a cavity, I was told I would have to wait 6 months (until May - this was in December) til I could be seen for a dental exam & x-ray before I could be evaluated to see when they could take care of my cavity. I was so nervous to go to this place because I have OHP. Obviously OHP has a stigma around it that you're not gonna get quality care and/or you're gonna have to wait a significant amount of time before you're seen. This place completely exceeded my expectations. I called in severe pain and I did have to wait a few weeks before I could get in for an exam, but once they saw me and diagnosed that I needed a root canal they did everything in their power to get me in as soon as possible to get it taken care of. They are a busy location just like any other dental office, but they make up for their busy schedule with compassionate care and quality care. The front office staff was very sweet and understanding of the situation. The dental assistants were so nice and accommodating and nonjudgmental. And the doctor that I work with has been a doctor for 30 years and his expertise definitely showed. He was gentle and asked me if I was OK the entire time during my procedure. He even personally called me the next day to check in on me and make sure that I was OK after the procedure. Like I said, I was extremely nervous to go to any OHP provider because of the stigma. This office changed that view for me and treated me better than I've ever been treated before even when I was on commercial insurance. While the staff are super welcoming and friendly, the process of trying to get an appointment is almost impossible. They say that if you leave a message they'll get back to by one business day. This is an outright lie as I've been calling and left messages since Friday night. It is now Thursday. They even have a text number you can reach out to and again haven't been able to get through to anyone. They rang me back once and when I immediately called back, again crickets. It's been 4 years since I first went into advantage dental. Since then, my life has been ruined. I went in for basic fillings. One larger than the others. They failed the fillings. I had to go back 7 times for them to shave down the filling composite because they ruined my bite. Within 6 months of my first filling, I get diagnosed with TMJ on my left side. Because my bite was uneven, the jaw joint disk of cartilage fell out of place. My jaw now clicks, pops and gives me 3-6 migraines per week. I lost my ability to work. I went back after the pandemic allowed dentists to open. They claimed I had another filling to get done. So they did it. I told them about my previous issues and they didn't care AT ALL. My tooth was uneven on its bite for so long that now, the tooth's root was damaged. The nerve dying. They refer me to get a root canal. I went to this new dentist. They felt better organized. I paid them $2300 for a root canal and 3 weeks later. The root canal starts to hurt. The tooth is dead. The root canal a failure. My money is gone. I go back to my advantage dental and they tell me the tooth has to get pulled. So after over a dozen visits on the same tooth, diagnosed with TMJ, our $2300 of my own money, they send me to a new dentist to get my tooth pulled. I had the consultation with the extraction dentist last week. He was unshaven, not showered, sweaty, he didn't make eye contact once and he didn't listen to my issues at all. I went from being an energetic 30 year old to a 33 year old with chronic migraines, toothaches, jaw pain and inability to eat cold, hot or crunchy foods. This place needs to be shut down. You all should be ashamed of yourselves. You aren't dentists. You are pimps. Whoring out your patients to the OHP insurance companies. read more

I took my son there today. They were great with him! He felt very comfortable and relaxed. However, we came in, I was asked if I was vaccinated. That was NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS. I wasn't even the patient. I answered, mostly out of shock, but I wish I hadn't. They had ZERO legitimate reason to ask me that. I should I have said, "I politely decline to answer." I am really wondering if asking a non patient that was a violation of HIPAA. I would have given them five stars if not for that. When did it become socially acceptable to start asking random people about their personal medical choices?? Just be forewarned if you go there. They are great with kids, but they have no legal right to ask the parent about his or her personal vaccination status. read more

I don't know about this place. I had two root canals done but they made my appointment too far out that one temporary filling came out when I was eating and my tooth broke in half due to there being no support for the tooth while eating. They said they have to extract the tooth. They also recommended to extract another tooth that is next to my front teeth that had a crown fall off. I asked them could I just glue that crown back on? They kind of laughed as if that was a ridiculous question. So they extracted that tooth. Now it's hard to sound right when I talk.. I find out online, that crowns are indeed glued on with tooth cement and it is possible to reattach the crown or replace it. The root canal was already done and capped and it fell off because I had to use my front teeth to chew because of the cavity in my molar. That tooth was not in pain or infected. I think it could have been saved. In summary, I go to save my teeth and get two root canals and temporary fillings only later to have two extractions and still have a temporary filling on one tooth. That's my complaint along with it's very hard to make an appointment because it's rare they answer the phone. read more

I left DETAILED voice messages and they have not been thorough about connecting back with me. I explained in voicemail that my toddler was in need of seeing an emergency pediatric dentist due to a fall and out of place teeth! Where to start. This was an abusive experience for me. Still in the process of reporting them. My teeth feel much worse after going here. My first filling probably should have been a root canal and now it hurts to chew on the tooth they filled 8 months later. Second, My dentist stabbed my gum and left a divot in my tooth during a filling. I was feeling it with my tongue and mistakenly thought he had left something stuck in my gum. I asked him about it and he was offended , then proceeds to floss my tooth fervently. I said it was painful but he instead on doing it again and again until the floss was dripping with blood. The dental hygienist had to stop him and explain what happened to me. Suggested I go home and if it still felt like something was in there the day after, so that the swelling went down to come back the next day. Thank God for her, because she was right. Side note he leaned his stomach and crotch against me the whole time and made me feel very uncomfortable. read more

I missed an appointment because of uber and I can't get these people to call me back. You call you leave a message they never answer their phones ever I mean ever and when you try to call them back and leave a message they say they'll return your call in 24 hours that never happens I really do not like this place at all they get paid well for my insurance company and all I get is problems from them granted I missed my appointment and it was partially my fault but Uber didn't get to me in time and I have to give them some of the responsibility which really upsets me. Negative 10 stars if possible. Worst customer service/office management!!!!!!! Unfortunately, I couldn't post my review without selecting as least one star. 1 hour appointment for a 1 root canal and 1 filling . Checked in 8:55am. Appointment 9:00am. Walked to the back 9:22am. Seen by dental assistant and dentist for 27 minutes. Work done 1 filling instead of the root canal. 2nd filling not done. Checked out 9:55am to 10:24am. This office has the worst customer service / office operations. My five year has been coming to this office since she was two years old. Unfortunately, this is the only pediatric dentist within five miles of us. In her last routine cleaning appointment, the office made a follow up appointment because it was discovered that she had some cavities that needed to be worked on. Her grandpa took her to the cleaning appointment. They gave him an appointment card that said 9:00am Friday hand written on it. No additional details on it. I called multiple times and left multiple messages with the office asking what date the appointment was for and what work was to be done. No return call ever received from the office. The day before the appointment, I received an automated phone call saying she had an appointment at 9:00am tomorrow. I had to put a request to ask for the morning off from work. When I got home that night, I received a estimate letter for nitrous for $298 with an estimate of the insurance paying in full. When I got to the appointment that morning, the front desk stated I had to pay some outrageous fee before we leave the office. The appointment we had was going to have to be broken up into three appointments. Nitrous is highly recommended for each appointment. Nitrous is not usually covered by insurance. In summary, 1. The office gave me no details about the appointment beforehand when I called and left more than five appointments in the three month span prior to the appointment date. 2. I had to request the morning off from work the day before the appointment. Thank goodness my employer was understanding. I didn't want to wait another three months for the appointment. 3. I had no idea I had to pay up front for the work. What's the point of having insurance? 4. I had to come back two more times for the additional appointments which means asking for the morning off again and paying for nitrous again. 5. Their estimates are wrong. Nitrous is not paid by insurance. Their patient portion estimates are wrong. I've never seen kids filling covered at less than 30%. Insurance covers preventative work at 70-100% and major work at 50% up to your calendar year max. I have not maxed out my calendar year benefits yet. 6. If your 15 late to your appointment, they automatically reschedule you. What happens when the office is more than 15 minutes behind? Do I get reimbursed for my time? Am I compensated? The dentist and dental assistant was great but office front desk and office management definitely need major work. read more

I said I had a dental emergency, so they put me in their special "emergency" appointment wait list, which consists of waiting for two hours, only to have the doctor say "yeah, we need to schedule you for a full examination. You have a cavity and will need a root canal" Are you serious? I'm bleeding in your office and your emergency appointment consists of you scheduling me another appointment in two weeks!? And you charge me 90 dollars for that? How much would the actual examination and surgery have costed? I found a different doctor who examined me fully the next day AND gave me temporary medicine. And the surgery was a few days later. Oh, and the examination was cheaper than the so called "emergency" appointment here. And no, I didn't have a cavity. I had gingivitis . Who gave these people their degrees? How can these people sleep at night with such a shotty business. PS forgot to add their emergency check up only covered four teeth. They asked me which four teeth I wanted to have looked at before they schedule me for the full examination. How does that even make sense when I have full mouth inflammation and bleeding? How would I decide which FOUR teeth to pick? My god. And they didn't have examine those four teeth correctly. If they had their way they'd give me a root canal on a perfectly fine tooth when in reality I had acute necrotising ulcerating gingivitis leading to periodontitis. I needed a debridement and antibiotics. read more

This clinic is awful, and it's a shame because the dentists and hygienists themselves are great and well equipped to interact with children, but it's as everyone else on the reviews is saying here: they do not have a phone system where you can communicate them. There must be some kind of in clinic policy where they are required not to answer the phones during the day or let them all go to message, because the fact of the matter is you cannot speak to the staff at ANY Advantage Dental clinics unless you go speak to them in person, for absolutely everything. They never answer the phone and they will only call you back first thing in the day at 8am if they even do call back, and if you don't answer at 8am on the 1 in 10 chance that they return your call, then you're shit out of luck. It takes months and months of calling to try getting in touch with anyone and in the end you just have to go in person for any matters, no matter how quick of a chat it would be. I would have left this clinic long ago if I could have, but I have no choice due to OHP forcing you to only go to Advantage dental clinics for pediatrics. I would do anything to be able to change my daughter to another dental practice, but I can't. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Let me just say I have had a lot of work done at this place and my choice to remove 13 damaged teeth rather than save them with caps or implants was just not an option for me...like most of us dental care ins just pay enough or for most people have NONE....I am so damn grateful that have dental...years of pain is now over...in October 2017 12 teeth were pulled leaving my very front teeth speared...importantly these teeth serve as anchor teeth for my new upper partial and partial below...unfortunately in my case these partials were not functional in that my bite was too deep and headaches became a daily event... So what does Dental Care do for me? They completely remedied the situation...they sent me to a denturist named Melanie Block and with her expertise my partials will fit perfectly...it will be the first time in 30 years to have beautiful, functional teeth...today I had one more tooth extracted because it should have been extracted in the first place but it was unnoticeably weak and was falling apart... The staff are amazing professional compassionate....they have all seen me at my worst and I never felt uncomfortable...Jennifer Siefker the Orthodontic Practice Manager love her! Advantage dental as a whole is just ridiculous! I know they are desparately understaffed, as well as the entire ohp system, but even allowing for that, I cannot get an appointment in a timely manner for my father, nor can I ever get anyone on the phone! I've been dealing with them for a year. Dad's initial treatment plan started in 2/22, and here we are, 11/22, and we've accomplished one filling and a cleaning, it takes THAT long to get in! And forget getting a call back. I've left dozens of messages over the last 9 months and have NEVER received a call back. I have to actually drive to the clinic in order to change or make an appointment. Dad initially came in on an "emergency" visit with multiple abscesses, breaking teeth and pain. We were told that we could have only 1 tooth examined. How is that meeting an emergency?? If it weren't for the fact that dad has ohp, and therefore doesn't have much choice of where they send him, I would never go there. I gave them one star because the dentist we have seen has been pretty accomodating of dad's problems. He's not only a dementia patient, but has positional vertigo, and cannot lie flat in a dentist chair without getting violently sick. His dentist, although pregnant, keeps dad somewhat upright, and adjusts her position in order to treat him. I appreciated that a lot. This is at his regular dentist office. Now, I'm trying to get dad in to the Gateway office for extractions, and have left many messages, all unreturned, to just make the appointment. It's taken us over 9 months of waiting just to get to this consultation. Ugh. read more

Dr. Halpert and dental assistants were welcoming, kind. They were engaging to my (at the time) 1 and 2 yr old daughter. The only thing that is lacking is the administrative team. I was called on Sunday to let me know that they would be cancelling my daughter's appointment for the following Thursday because they were unable to verify her insurance. I missed the call and I tried to call them back but of course no one was available to answer the call because it's....Sunday. I left them a voicemail to call me back because her dental insurance had changed and I wanted to let them know. They never called me back. I called them back a few days later and the front desk person insisted on obtaining my social security numbers for both myself and my daughter. I know this information was not needed for my type of insurance and so she transferred me over to insurance personnel. Long story short, they can't see my daughter for another month so I scheduled an appointment for the same day elsewhere. It's too much of a hassle to deal with admin but I'm giving them 5 stars because the dentist and the dental assistants are awesome, caring people who really, truly care about their patients. Not only was the dentist condescending when I asked about what was going to be used on my filling and replied "it will be the color purple" (as if that's funny or appropriate) but the receptionists are extremely rude. One receptionist was so mean over the phone when I asked her to not be so harsh she simply hung up on me. The next I called and asked for my records to be transferred and she just went silent when I asked how they would prefer me to send them the form. The dentist was even irritated with the woman he had helping her with my filling and mean to her. Overall this must be a terrible place to work because everyone is extremely rude. I had a terrible experience for myself the first time I went a couple of months ago but I decided not to write a review. But today did it for me. First experience: I called this place to schedule a check up and teeth cleaning. After a long 2 months I finally made it to my appointment. The assistant came in and took 18 x-rays and when it was time to see the dentist she came in for 30 secs and then they told me I had to schedule my appoint for the cleaning. What!!! I made the appointment for the cleaning. They said to me.. we can't do that because you are a new patient. You are just here for x-rays. What a waist of time that is. A couple of weeks later, they sent me a bill for $200 with an envelope enclosed. They never bothered to bill my insurance first. After calling them and asking why my co-payment is so high they stated that what we received was not a bill. Again they just did not admit that they did not bill my insurance. What kind of non-bill comes with payment instructions and a return envelope. Today I took my daughter for her next check up. When we arrived, the receptionist told us that we have a balance of $38 due. I told her that we have dual insurance and that it should cover the whole visit. I requested that she look up our prior visit. She then told me that they no longer accept our secondary insurance. Well that would have been great if someone had told us that prior to us driving all the way there. If a company decides they no longer accept a certain type of insurance, maybe they ought to sent out a notification to their clients or patients. The manager came out and told me that they CANNOT see my daughter. I said what if i just pay for the $38 copay and that they can just bill my private insurance. He said that is against the law. Well at this point not only am i pissed off but I'm just at a loss for their reasoning. He said they cannot service her because she has dual insurances one of which they no longer take. AGAIN, they should have informed us that prior. The "supervisor" was very unhelpful. Not to mention my daughter is a special needs kid and to go anywhere or do anything take special planning. FRAUD ARTISTS! They ran my credit card AFTER they already received payment on that card.(See below) They told me permanent crowns are not covered by my insurance (their own corporate office said they should have billed insurance and appealed if that failed, and insurance website said metal permanent crowns are covered.) and told me I had to pay $760.00 out of pocket. Halfway through procedure I had to leave the chair to sign away another $186 "to build the tooth up".They charged $1,000 for that $946 bill from my VISA, leaving my account overdrawn. They tried for another $1,000 the next day! AND, they harassed me with phone calls and messages CLAIMING THEY NEVER GOT PAID, and demanding I bring cash to the office.
