At Christmas there was a deal on Rochester Perks for a buy one, get one experience in Letchworth with Adventure Calls Outfitters, so I thought it would a great adventure and experience to share with my bonus Dad- and it was! We had a fantastic whitewater rafting experience with Adventure Calls Outfitters! We did their Genesee River trip, which runs through the stunning Letchworth State Park. It was the perfect introduction to rafting for my family, who were all first-timers--and now they can't wait to do it again! Just like planning any other river trip, make sure you check the water level before you go. We were fortunate to have high water levels and the rapids were awesome! I had always wanted to go white water rafting and luckily my cousin's girlfriend organized a friends and family affair to surprise my cousin for his birthday! There were 18 of us in total (!!!) and we all met at the Adventure Calls parking lot inside of Letchworth State Park, near the Castile entrance, around 9:15/9:30 in the morning. When my cousin, Mark, and his girlfriend, Carlie, arrived we all learned that Carlie had actually blindfolded Mark the entire ride from Buffalo so it really was a surprise!!! We went into Adventure Calls and filled out a waiver, were shown to the bathrooms/changing room, and then went back outside and got fitted for our life jackets, followed by a safety talk by Todd. We won't mention that I was the only one who chose to wear a helmet... Gotta protect this noggin of mine! Helmets aren't required for the class rapids Letchworth possesses (only class I & II). Everyone we encountered was super friendly which was definitely appreciated since it was about 10am and we had gotten up around 6am to get to Letchworth in time! So after the safety talk we all boarded the Adventure Calls blue school bus to be transported to the water!!! I should probably note that the water levels were particularly low and we didn't actually go white water rafting so much as white water kayaking. We were all in inflatable kayaks. Several of my family members and I chose to go solo while my brother and dad went in a tandem kayak together. We were led by Megan and supported by Dave, Paul, and Todd of Adventure Calls Outfitters, Inc. We had an amazing time despite the low water levels and getting stuck on countless rocks/boulders. It was about a five mile trek in total with a stop at a beautiful waterfall that we could actually go in!!! At the end we took the bus back to Adventure Calls and our party concluded a great day with a fabulous picnic in the park. I'd love to go back to Adventure Calls when the water level is a bit higher. They also offer two other locations, Salmon River in Pulaski, NY and at Zoar Valley in Gowanda, NY. Check out their website for more information on those trips. Some happen in the Spring... brrrr!!! So it was a great, fun, fit, friendly day and it was fun to see our [free] pictures on their Facebook page, too! Letchworth Whitewater Rapids: So much fun! $45 a person (over the age of 8). My family went and it was a ton of fun for a 6 year old, teenagers and adults. We went the day after it rained and the river was moving! Our guide said that they are class 1 (and sometimes class 2) rapids. You will stop in Wolf's Cove/Creek (?) and can slide down a natural waterslide and/or go under a waterfall (it was too strong to do this during our trip). Get there 30 minutes early to get your rain jacket (if needed), life vest and helmet on. There is a 30 minute bus ride to get to the other side of the river. Tips: - wear water friendly shoes & clothes (workout type of outfit was perfect) - wear sunscreen - take off any valuables before going (they won't keep anything except your car keys for you) - go to the bathroom at the office (there is a porte-potty where the bus drops you off at the start of the rapids) read more

Had a wonderful time with Adventure Calls. We found the staff to be very pleasant, helpful, and kind. We were lucky to have Danica guide our boat - she was fantastic! The river was low but the rapids were still fun - I wouldn't call it exhilarating but that was never suggested - they are novice level rapids. I thought that the price was more than reasonable and we appreciated the extra touches of water being provided for the trip, a small snack at the end of the trip, and free pictures available on Facebook a few days after the trip. I would highly recommend this company to anyone visiting Letchworth. read more

Booked over the phone 2 d before outing in late July for party of 5. Reservation was not on their books but they took us anyway. No one to greet us, amid a large throng of Boy Scouts and other random folks scattered outside w the gear. The first thing you see are tables w the release forms, requiring you to sign in multiple areas. I knew we were in trouble when that was the first experience w the business! I understood this to be a GUIDED raft experience w some history and natural world information. It's not- it is a paddle rafting trip. The group of guides is older, and there were NOT enough guides for every boat. VERY MISLEADING. I asked one of the raft guides what the river flows were that day and typically, and she had no idea. This is a very basic river terminology that she should have known. The one local river history question I asked her also went unanswered. Lucky for us, 2 of our group have decades of serious white water experience and we ran our own boat. I felt sorry for some groups w older adults who were not expecting to power their own trip and did not speak English well. The first rapid shortly into the trip is a class 2 (after rainfall) curve to the left requiring you to steer clear of a wall. NOT ideal for real beginners. There was no guided information on anything! The kids did enjoy the stop to float a minor rapid and the waterfall dip. The promised snack at the end of the trip was dollar store cookies from a package. No port a potties at the take out, not even a bottle of water for the bus ride back. The bus driver at least tried to give a bit of history about Mr. Letchworth, the park's namesake. He was my hero. I would not recommend this trip. read more

On a whim, I signed up myself and two sons for a white water rafting Adventure. With a little coaxing of the younger son we traveled to Adventure Calls on the morning of the trip following simple and easy directions. The staff is extremely friendly and are there to assist with everything. Had a Great time from the moment we arrived to the very end of the trip. Even sorry to see it ends. Great fun and an awesome introduction to rafting; we will definitely recommend Adventure Calls to all of our family, friends, and colleagues. Do purchase the waterproof camera you will definitely want to preserve all of the fond memories created while on your excursion. We had a great time and are definitely interested in pursuing more rafting adventures! Only thing I can say is I wish we had had a guide in our raft. There was so many people that some rafts weren't assigned guides. We were all very inexperienced (our first ever raft experience) and did a lot of bouncing of rocks/got stuck a couple times on rocks. The mom and her young daughters on our raft were really scared at one point and stopped paddling/sat down inside the raft, so we kind of took charge even though we had no clue what we were doing haha. We did have a lot of fun once our steerer got the hang of it and we realized we weren't gonna ping pong off rocks all day. The scenery was beautiful and we still enjoyed ourselves, but I would definitely suggest assigning first timers to a guided raft. read more

Absolutely recommend these folks. What a fun time. Was on a "misguided" boat with no guide (and was lucky enough to be the person steering at the back) at Lori's mention of our kayak experience. Even with this the guides are dispersed and watching all the boats shouting out helpful hints. Make sure you are at least a half hour early so you can sign in and for goodness to be on time for the safety stuff. The water was nice and not cold at all. And luckily there was rain to increase the flow. The various stops for swimming, body surfing, leap of faith are all amazing. Not to mention you are at the bottom of a 500 foot gorge, for goodness sakes look up every now and then and see the view! They take plenty of pictures if you do not have a camera. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and humorous. Could you imagine that for a job?? Wow. The trip back once off the river was equally as fun and educational. This may have sparked us to continue more and more raft trips on more rapids. I wish it wasn't over so quick! What a great time. read more

We did the whitewater rafting and had a lot of fun. This is really for beginners and for people who want to check out the absolutely amazing views of the true 'Grand Canyon of the East!' The staff was amazing and the price you can't beat. It was $45 for about 2 hours on the Genesee River. They take pictures and post them... and get this... They don't charge for them!! They do have other tours - some of which are private. So they do offer other trips for the more adventurous or experienced petiole out there. Definitely going back for more!!! read more

Just went today to whitewater raft, I was nervous bc I had never been. ACO was great! The staff was very friendly, they were very organized. They eased my mind of any worries, I felt very comfortable and safe. The trip was very mild at Letchworth. We stopped for a little hike and view the waterfalls, which we were able to get under. I would definitely go again! Maybe to a class III next!! read more

Terrible communication from staff! Called 3 days in a row, was told river to low not running, 2nd call was told not running because they were expectimg thunderstorms, 3rd time i called was told that they had run everyday that week and had been booked every day, and if we wanted to go that day they just had 1 run in a half an hour. they could return my phone call and tell me that they were not running the next day, but never bothered to call when they decided that they were running. read more

Wow! I am so disappointed. I called to participate in a trip sponsored by Adventure Calls Outfitters. When I spoke to whoever answered the phone, I was informed that the river was too low for the event and that it was cancelled. Imagine my surprise when I saw pictures of that trip that was "cancelled" posted on Facebook on Monday morning! When I reached out to the proprietor to understand the misinformation, I was informed that, in fact, the event was "full" when I called -- which would have been a perfectly fine answer to my request to participate-- yet, I was misled.
