Tl;dr: great advice, would absolutely buy from these guys again --- I live on the other side of the country and am an avid kayaker. I've gotten my kids into it, as well as my girlfriend and her daughter. We now have a mess of kayaks lying around the garage. Before the Seattle winter set in, i needed to sort out canopy covers for all our boats. Some are cheap lake boats, others are good quality near-shore ocean boats. After spending two afternoons trying to find covers, going thru sizing tables on multiple websites, considering buying custom covers, one single quick email exchange with Oak Orchard sorted me. I received clear explanations about which boats needed which types of covers and why. I bought 3 covers and had them shipped to the PNW. There's simply no replacement for friendly expert advice and the folks i exchanged emails with left me confident in my purchases. A few notes on the shipment. 1) Packed with care. It was obvious this wasn't coming from an Amazon DC with a few packets of SealedAir inside. Someone made sure to pack this so it would arrive safely on my end. 2) if your grandfather wrote you instructions, they'd look like the supplemental sheet included in the box. There are WORDS IN CAPITAL LETTERS. There's some underlining. Someone took the time to highlight an import bit in yellow. There are links to YouTube videos. They include their phone number! At least for me, that extra set of instructions was very welcome and the WordPerfect formatting just made it even better. I loved it. To me it showed that they care about my experience, that I'll be successful with the widget i purchased from them. 3) the included brochure! First, lots of things in it I want to buy in the spring. Second, this is what a brochure would look like if I sat down and laid it out in PowerPoint. In 2006. When i say it's epic, I mean that as a compliment. I read it front to back, there was lots of useful information in it, and there's a snapshot of someone's kids loading a canoe on an Dodge pickup from the early 80s. It feels a bit like a Trader Joe's insert, if Trader Joe loved being out on the water. In sum, I had a great experience and would absolutely buy from these folks again. Made in USA Super Seat is not as sturdy as the retailer claims. Zipper failed after just a few uses and retailer will exchange If I pay to ship it back. If I sold an inferior product and made such bold claims of it being better than the similar foreign made product, I would feel obligated to repair or replace at no additional cost to the consumer. Did you know that if you are committed to buying a boat, Oak Orchard will accept a deposit to hold it just in case you change your mind about the model when you get there and try it out? Untrustworthy company. Steer clear! I made a group reservation for rentals a month in advance. Myself and my wife called 3 separate times to confirm our reservations and get further information. Spoke with the same person each time. (The male owner) The day of the trip comes, we drove all the way from Buffalo with 2 car groups. Arrive, and they are completely closed. I go up to the house and knock on the door, the owner comes to the door and looks at me like I am insane. I said I'm there for the 10:00 reservation. He says he has no such reservation and they aren't doing river rentals because of the amount of recent rain. Besides they don't open until 12pm...um what? We confirmed multiple times!? He had our phone number, and should have called us to cancel if the water levels were a problem. However he never mentioned on numerous phone calls the possibility of a cancellation because of water levels. He was not in the least bit apologetic or helpful. Basically said too bad. Don't give your money to these people. They treated us like we were an inconvenience (even were rude on the phone) rather than paying customers. read more

I bought my first kayak from Oak Orchard in 2001. Because I knew little to nothing about kayaks I went to their location in order to actually try them out. The salesperson was extremely helpful. He helped me try out several boats based on my small size and the type of paddling I planned to do. He also gave me instruction on how to properly enter/exit the boat from a dock. I purchased a kayak, paddle, life jacket, foam pads for transportation and straps. I've never been disappointed in my selection and have paddled many miles. The experience was so good that I've referred several friends with good results for them as well. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of going back to Oak Orchard with my boyfriend, who is a beginner kayaker. We worked with Mark, who answered many questions and helped select and try out 4 different kayaks. My boyfriend purchased a kayak, paddle, cockpit cover, and foam transportation blocks. As always, Oak Orchard provided us with great information, quality products, and an overall excellent buying experience. To be able to spend over an hour working with a salesperson, trying out boats to get the right boat for your size, shape and experience, and having that salesperson answer many, many questions about equipment, is a level of service you won't get in any big box store. Mark even helped us load the boat and tie it down. Don't buy a boat if you haven't tried it on for size and handling. They are all very different. I was disappointed in Oak Orchard. I had a pretty good idea on the style of Kayak I wanted and I was ready to buy. But the sales guy showed me everything in the store EXCEPT for the type of Kayak I was looking for. He took a LONG time showing me canoes which he knew I had no interest in. He also showed me entry level boats and inflatable boats which again he knew I had no interest in. I appreciate introducing me to styles that I wasn't that familiar with, but how about showing me what I asked to see? The other thing that was strange is he didn't seem to know the selling prices of the boats. Some of the models he showed me I saw at places like LLBean and EMS for $50-$100 less. At that point I decided to leave. I suppose if you knew exactly what boat you wanted to buy or had no idea what you wanted just bought whatever they told you was good for you and didn't care too much about the price, this would be good place to buy a boat. I have been searching for the right Tandem Kayak for over a year and decided on the Necky Manitou II. I researched the best I could locally and on line for this make and decided to call Oak Orchard in New York. I Spoke with Mark from Oak Orchard on a Thursday and was very satisfied with Marks assurance that they had the Kayak I wanted and it could be shipped safely to me in Michigan I ordered it along with 2 paddles. I picked up the kayak on the following Thursday at the Forward air terminal in My area. I have been packaging orders for customers and unpacking supplies from vendors for 30 years and have never seen anything packaged as well as the job done on the kayak. Even the guys at Forward Air were impressed. I've received a lot of damaged freight throughout the years and was a little apprehensive about shipping something as oddly shaped as this. DO NOT SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS. THEY ARE RUDE, INSULTING AND ALL AROUND POOR. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. TAKE YOUR MONEY ELSEWHERE. Long story short, they may call themselves canoe and kayak experts, but the only thing they are proficient in is poor customer service. We were not greeted or welcomed and treated like we should be the experts while loading the kayaks we wanted to rent. The owner came out and told his employee that we had to take shorter kayaks to fit better on my trailer. He looked at us and hollered that "HIS KAYAKS ARENT GETTING LOADED LIKE THAT"... like its our fault the poor employee was giving us the longer ones. Their biggest thing was to make sure we got the equipment back to them on time, so they could go home. Then, when trying to pay for the rental, the guy at the desk made us wait while he took a 15 minute phone call trying to locate someone elses shipment online. Really!!? Get the guys number and call him back!!!!! Time is ticking! Oh, and the owner came in while the guy was on the phone and told US to keep his dog in the office. We don't work there, worry about your own dang dog. Maybe I should send a bill for dog sitting. They never gave us any pointers or instruction on how to properly use their equipment or keep us safe either. So anyway, determined not to let it ruin our day, we went kayaking. When we returned (on time) with the equipment, another employee started to help us unload. At which time the owner's wife walks by and gives us attitude and a lecture about the mud in the floor of the kayak..... Wait..... You run a kayak rental place. Kayaks get muddy taking them in and out of the water. (You dont need to be an expert to know this). I asked if they thought we should have a hose in my truck to wash them out? Maybe I should have taken them home first? But then they wouldnt have been able to close on time and charge me a late fee. She said that next time they will charge us to clean them out. I told her that there will be no next time. They didnt have a hose available for us to clean them out ourselves either, they just want to charge you more. And besides, I should charge THEM for having to clean out the birds nest and broken robin eggs and yolks all over the bottom of them when we picked them up. Pretty nasty for being so concerned about cleanliness..... Anyway, this place is WAY over priced and will ruin your day if you go there... In looking for a touring kayak, I opted to make every effort to support a local business. Their prices on actual boats is relatively the same as what you can find on line (most of the time, an on line purchase also provides free shipping). The last thing I found at Oak Orchard Canoe & Kayak "Experts" was a good experience. My test drive day was great! Had a really nice salesmen who listened and took the time to get me comfortable with the purchase. Returning a week later, the same salesmen was not available and boy, what a drawback that was. I ended up with a high pressure know it all sales guy who clearly had only one objective in mind - how much I was willing to spend and when. On multiple occasions, it was made very clear that my thoughts on what equipment I was in the market for or had access to were substandard - I didn't know what I was talking about even though I was the one who was going to be using this stuff. The only thing this place has in mind is gouging customers. I wouldn't go so far as to say, DO NOT shop here, but I say, go here only for a test drive. Boats, vests, paddles and car equipment are found elsewhere for equal quality, cost less and with far less attitude. read more
