Just did my open water here. Couldn't be happier. The information was detailed and thorough & the instructors are extremely patient and knowledgeable. From classroom to lake day it was clear they sincerely care and I got 0 vibes this is a "pay-to-pass" operation. They took time with students to calm anxieties and make sure we understood not just the what but the why. But ultimately, the quality of instruction can be gauged from how a class is conducted when things are a bit trickier, and THIS is where the instructors really shined as high-level professionals. Everyone in a class progresses at slightly different rates, and not only can it feel stressful if you are not "getting it" at the same speed as other folks, but the added pressure of knowing the class is waiting on you can ramp the pressure up even more. For people who needed that bit of extra help, they had enough staff available to branch off and help them with skills development without other students having to wait. After the skills had been brought up to par, they rejoined the class and made huge progress. It was really cool to see. For the lake portion of the class, the student to divemaster/instructor ratio was nearly 2:1. At any point I could turn around and see a divemaster near by in case I had an issue. If you get your cert here rest assured you'll have many skilled pairs of eyes to watch over and get you where you need to be. Will def be doing more certs with them and can't recommend Adventure Scuba highly enough. read more

9/17/2018: I was searching for a specific silicon, scuba/snorkel mask which won't lose its visibility at a depth of 150-feet (I loathe trying to clear my mask at depths greater than 80-feet underH2O!) below the ocean's surface plus, have the ability inserting, adhering an optic-creatively made, eyeglass frames inside the scuba/snorkel mask; ironically, I have searched scuba diving centers to sporting good stores from SF Bay Area to Fallon, Nevada! Finally, I decided using my Garmin GPS searching for a scuba diving center located in Carson City and Reno, Nevada; the Carson City scuba dive center was unable ordering the mask I wanted so, they had no choice but, giving me an immediate refund. As a result of receiving my refund, I began haphazardly bumbling around Reno such as searching REI checking if, they would have the scuba mask I wanted-NOPE; I drove to The Outlet At Legends visiting Scheels-NOPE, nothing! I checked via WI-FI at Legends if, Cabela's had professional scuba/snorkel masks via their URL Catalog; sadly, they only carry the "tourist's throw-away" inexpensive types of masks. Round and round cruisin' throughout Reno/Sparks checking different stores for the specific mask I needed then, I bumbled upon Adventure Scuba!!!!! EUREKA!!!!! I hurriedly parked my truck, hoofed inside Adventure Scuba THREE MINUTES before they closed their store for the day: I met David standing behind the counter ready to perform his POS closing cashout while I was huffing and puffing running into the scuba center, crashing into the counter with my body, abruptly stating via Dragnet lingo~"Silicone mask for me, please!?" OOoooooooffff~I began guzzling H2O out of my YETI H2O stainless steel container regaining my composure . . . David calmly . . . David was so chilled out~he's so cool (!) showed me several scuba/snorkel masks: A few silicon masks were too large for my face but, David persisted finding me the correct mask which would comfortably conform to my facial bone structure. Eureka!!!!! David found me a mask within three minutes after I crashed into the counter-lol~which exactly conformed to my facial bone structure; it's crucial not having any air gaps otherwise, it would be extremely deadly wearing the wrong size mask while scuba diving! I was certified here about a year ago. Doug was my instructor and was fabulous. All of the dive masters who assisted on the open water diving were wonderful and everyone was extremely patient and helped you feel at ease. I have been on two of the trips organized by the owner's and they were extraordinary. The last trip I went on I was by myself, I slipped off a ladder and broke my leg and ankle. The kindness of all the staff from the boat, other divers and the owners of Adventure Scuba Center was so above and beyond. Scott and Amy took me to the hospital, took care of me and drove my car home. They are the definition of graciousness, hospitality and good will. Went to the store to sign up for the open water class. Amy (one of the owners) took at least 30 minutes to talk to me and explain things that were not even remotely in the scope of open water rec certification. Signed up for the class a few days later. My wife and I were certified open water today. All 3 of the instructors that we had were very good and took the time to help us feel comfortable about breathing under water. The folks that work in the store are extremely helpful and very knowledgeable in the sport. Everybody involved are very happy to answer questions and make you feel welcome. We had a great day Discovering Lake Tahoe with Sean! Everything about our dive experience was perfect, from scheduling to actually diving. Sean was very knowledgeable and was great about answering all of the questions that we had about diving in general. We felt that the day was really personalized to us, as Sean allowed us to go at our pace and skill level and provided lots of options for where to go and what to see. He took the time to teach us about setting up the equipment, and using dive computers, which was fun. I would highly recommend this shop, and Sean. This is a really cool scuba shop. The people are genuine! The location is really cool you can get on the interstate quickly. The parking is ample but tight for my large truck. They have everything you will need to dive here; the prices seem really high but I have nothing to base that off of other than my inherent cheapness (hey I got it honest and I wear it proud). They offer the NAUI and PADI dive certifications for multiple types of dives from recreational to master diver; along with tank refills, rentals and all the other gadgets. I've been going through the NAUI certification and it's been cool and intensive. But the fun stuff is more than likely accompanied by hard work. If you're into a diving or want to get into diving get them a try. I'd like to read about your experience. read more

If you like being yelled at by the owners of a business, go here! Back in March I booked my scuba certification for April. Closer to when it was about to begin, I started a new job. I had talked to Ryan and explained the situation to him. He was nice and so no problem we can move it to May. I explained that it might not be possible to make that either and that the enrollment would be contingent. So here we are, with May beginning. I get a voicemail from Ryan confirming. I instantly call back and get no answer. So I leave a voicemail, while leaving the voicemail, I get another voicemail from the same number. No noise or anything so I had assumed that they had received my message and tried to hang up. Two days later, while at work, I had two voicemails from Amy saying I missed my class and had to pay a fee. I called back, had to leave ANOTHER voicemail explaining the situation. The next day I receive a voicemail from Amy very aggressively stating that I can't cancel last minute and that she has reserved multiple spots for me and that if I want to continue I have to pay more money. I instantly call her back and sat through about 3 minutes of her yelling at me. I had explained the situation and she very aggressively just kept saying that if I had wanted that to happen I had to talk to an owner. I explained my perception of how I had talked to someone in the store back in late March/ early April and explained the situation and was informed that it would not be an issue. She continued to yell at me and say that, that was not how it worked and that I was taking up multiple spots for the price of one. I had never gone to a class because I was under the impression that talking to someone in the store and coming to an agreement about it was good enough. And the end of the phone call I asked for a refund because I did not appreciate getting yelled at for this and her only response was "I'll see what I can do" as she hung up on me. I was originally impressed with the store but am completely disheartened with the fact that I was treated like a child after I had believed to come to a conclusion with someone, as a business owner, I would never imagine yelling at a customer to try and prove my point. I did ultimately get my money back, which is greatly appreciated. But as an adult and business professional, it was hard to see an owner act this way towards a paying customer. read more

Just returned from a fun trip to Roatan, Honduras with Amy & Scott. I live in the Boston area and this was my 3rd dive trip with them. The dive sites that the resort brought us to were amazing. My son and I had a great time and can't wait till the next trip to Curacao in the fall. This part is in rebuttal to peter t's comments. Yes using nitrox was a good idea for this trip but unfortunately the dive resort's nitrox compressor was disabled at the time of our trip. The training and certification is not just good for this trip but you now have it to use at anytime from now on. To ask or expect a refund for the class when you will most likely use the Nitrox certification in the future, is not justified. Both Amy and Scott were and are very respectful to all the locals. You made it sound like Amy & Scott brought the MAGA hats to the bar, when in fact they came from another party boat. Hey I even gave the bar owner a N.E. Patriots shirt to wear and took a picture of him wearing it (even though he had the MAGA hat on). Did I ask him to take it off so I could have a picture of him with the Pats shirt on without the hat? No. Because I respectfully ignored it. I was on vacation and left my political views at home. Amy & Scott jumped from one table to another and from one boat to the other to try and mix it up with the guests. Were they Captain Stubing and Julie McCoy? No, but that's the beauty of it. We could do and plan our own things once we arrived. This was a great trip and can't wait till the next one. I would have given 5 stars, but there is always room for improvement. I came here to get more information on certification for open water diving and it was a really good experience. I am not a strong swimmer but would very much like to get diving certified. So, I came here to get more information. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. I explained that I was nervous and not the best swimmer. The lady (I forgot her name) was patient and explained that there are certain criteria that I would have to meet. And suggest that I try and see if I could do it in a pool before signing up. I am determined to do this so I am going to take her advice. But since I was there, I browsed the equipment that I would eventually need. So, she knew I wasn't sign up for class yet and that I wouldn't be buying the equipment today. Yet, she still spent a good 20+ minutes or more explain the sizing and fit is need for a mask, boots, and fin. I took my open water scuba certification with Adventure Scuba. It was awesome. My instructor was Marcus, the owner. He was great and very personable. Made sure that we (students) learned everything we had to learn. He also made me feel very comfortable which made the diving experience 100 times better. At the final lake tahoe dives there was another class from another Reno scuba dive shop. I talked to some of the students and they all seemed disappointed with the class and service they were receiving from that place. Made me even happier to have chosen Adventure Scuba. I can't comment on the shop itself to much. The prices seemed reasonable. I purchased my fins, snorkel, mask, and boots from them and the prices were good. read more

I sincerely love this place. I would go in just to hang out and chat with the staff. They know pretty much all there is to know about diving. Free, scuba, and anything else you might be curious about. They give an honest assessment of products they carry, and do great discounts on scuba gear. As far as classes go, Adam is the BEST!!! I give him 5 stars! He is highly knowledgeable, safety oriented, and a very friendly dude. He is very flexible with scheduling. His dog Casey usually attends class, but will win you over in a heart beat. If you are allergic, don't let that deter you. I'm sure you can get him to leave his cute dog home for a day. Other than Adam being an awesome instructor, Marcus, one of the shop's owners is also great. An eccentric diver that is always gung-ho to attend any diving classes to practice his photography, Marcus will keep you laughing in or out of the water. Don't forget to check out their frequent dive expeditions to exotic locations such as Bali, and Veracruz. They are all reasonably priced, and if I weren't so darned busy I'd go to every one. The equipment they offer is always top notch. They offer many brands, high-end and mid-range in pricing, and can order many more. They will make customized packages if they don't have one that suits your needs exactly. Oh, and did I mention that they carry the Cobalt? Only the best dive computer out there. Vivid color screen is the best I've ever used. Very cool, and worth the price. They attend the SCUBA diver conference every year and always come back with goodies! Although I have only lived in the area for 2 short years, I am very glad that they are a part of this region. They are the ONLY SCUBA shop (NAUI OR PADI) that is worth the visit. Check them out! I've been an Adventure Scuba customer for a few years now, and stumbled on these Yelp reviews. This review is a consolidated review of all the services I've received there over the past 4 years now. Adventure Scuba in no way prompted or asked me to post this review-- I felt compelled to post after reading the other Yelp reviews only. I first went in in January 2010 after becoming certified in Hawaii, and wanted to try to keep diving. I met Janet and Marcus, the owners, who were really friendly, and my new future diving instructor/buddy 'Scuba' Adam. I signed up for the Advanced Open Water, Nitrox, and Dry Suit courses. While taking them, we did all our pool time at the NW Pool in Reno. Scuba Adam was great! We tried to dive at Sand Harbor in March 2010, but found it was literally, "cold as balls!" [Entry made in dive log, exactly like that]. We postponed finishing the course until the following October-- a seven month delay-- with no increase in fees, or any difficulty scheduling. I've since bought a BC, dive computer, weights, lights, hoods, masks, and many other dive gear at the shop. Janet and Marcus are quite knowledgable as far as equipment goes. When a recall came out on my Atomic Aquatics Cobalt that might have resulted in a catastrophic failure of the device, Janet called me personally to make sure I brought it in to get it serviced. I've also had them perform warranty work on broken lights for no charge. I've taken other equipment in to get my annual service, and they always do so very quickly and promptly. I can't recommend Adventure Scuba enough! To the other reviewers that didn't have the same experience with them, keep in mind that: 1.) it's a mom & pop shop, and if stuff comes up, they have to go. Traffic in the store on a random Tuesday between 11:00 am and 5:00 pm might be one customer if they're lucky. Reno isn't exactly a desitnation diving locale. 2.) There's not a lot of gear for diving in town to buy. If they had a class, and one of their students wanted something, they should be first in line. I've shopped at both 'big' [chuckle, chuckle, chuckle] shops in town, the only two really, and had pretty much the same experience. I like this shop more because NAUI is not for profit, whereas PADI is. I've got no problems with Sierra Dive Center, but each business is just run differently. Not only did the woman attending us get really snotty when we said we were taking a class elsewhere, but then she repeatedly refused to let us see the BCDs they had available, since "The students in our class get first choice." She then continued to tell me why I may not even get the size I need from their shop if it gets picked by one of their students - which isn't really a good way to sell products, and then told me to come back on a day I had already informed her I was out of town for. read more

I just finished up a NAUI Open Water course and could not be more pleased with the shop or my instructor, Vic! So pleased I will be signing up for an advanced class pretty soon. Amy and Scott (the owners) are very involved in the shop and helping answer any questions. As a student I received a 10% discount so I was able to more comfortably afford all of the gear needed, and let me tell you, the 10% really does help. They have a lot of rental gear, and it's all in pretty good condition. I learned a lot in my class. My instructor was extremely patient with me too since I am naturally an anxious person which was really appreciated. Not to mention Amy and Scott have an incredible staff! Everyone there is so passionate about scuba which makes people more inclined to want to give it a try or further their scuba skills. read more

My husband and I just went through our first NAUI dive class to get open water certified. I'm not going to lie, it was an intense process but by the end, we felt very prepared and comfortable with the skills we had learned and practiced. Scuba is an intense sport and can be dangerous so feeling comfortable with the equipment and in the open water is pivotal. Amy and Scott (the owners) were fantastic and walked us through the entire process. Their instructions were very clear on how to get through the workbook and e-learning. We "commuted" from the SF Bay Area (we have a place in the Tahoe area) and they were very accommodating. The open water dives in Lake Tahoe were so much fun! We had a very small class so we were able to get a lot of hands-on instruction from the Dive Masters/Instructors but bottom line, we feel so confident now. We are booking our first dives away from class in Bali in a couple months and I can honestly say thanks to Adventure Scuba, we feel great and so excited! Don't even waste your time looking into other dive centers in Reno; just book your classes here! read more
