This review is for THIS specific location and specifically based on customer service - especially in comparison to the one closer to Cannery Row. Cannery Row location had EXCELLENT customer service and is where we actually signed up. I arrived and there was only one person helping, so that may attribute to the lack of customer service. But there was also only one person in front of me and they were simply returning a bike. Seemed pretty straight forward. But, stood there (6ft away to social distance), still - no acknowledgement of me being there at all... When it did come to my turn, the person seemed less than enthusiastic to help and behaved like it was a nuisance to help me. When I informed him that I had a reservation to rent a surrey and had already paid, he said ok and did help us - but seemed confused and got on the phone. He was in the back for a while & I was confused as I had already filled out all of the paperwork and paid. Turns out he didn't see where they were, as they weren't where they're typically are parked. But seriously - they were in PLAIN view...if he had looked up, they were literally right behind us. When he finally realized where they were parked (I could almost hear the person exclaiming "DUH" on the other end of his phone, he finally helped us sign out the surrey. Mind you - this is all during COVID, so I was hoping to see something in terms of sanitizing it. NOPE - he just had me sign a paper, and said the bike was unlocked and we could go ahead and take it. Good thing I had sanitizing wipes on me to clean it. But seriously, he could have at least brought it over and/or asked us if we had any questions about how to ride, park or steer it. But, the Surrey/Bike worked great for the four of us and our pups. And it was a pretty amazing ride...so beautiful and relaxing. Played music along the way to add to the experience, too! I rented a traditional bike, and the only bike the shop could provide was a rustic relic. This bike inevitably broke down deep into my ride. I had to walk the bike a half mile to another shop for assistance. When I called, no one offered to pick me up from my location. I wasn't even offered a discount for my troubles. Thankfully, I didn't let this abysmal customer service ruin my day. An e-bike would have been perhaps better; if that were to breakdown, you'd still have slim-to-no-recourse. read more

Tl;dr Our family of 4 adults had a lot of fun renting a large surrey to ride along the recreation trail. It's $40 for one hour, or $80 for two. Half day and full day rentals also available. They have an online booking system now, but we were able to get a large surrey on a walk-in basis on a Friday around 12 PM. It looked like they only had 2-3 large ones, so a reservation may be a good idea on a weekend if your heart is set on a certain activity. We were able to park for free at the Portola Hotel parking garage, as I guess the hotel isn't reopened for business yet. There were other hourly parking garages nearby if needed. We always used to point out people on surreys thinking that looked fun for one day. That one day was finally here. We have 4 adults so we rented a large surrey. They spray it with sanitizing spray in between uses. There are two steering wheels, but only the left one is actually functional. The right wheel is perfect for your child or partner that needs to feel like they are in control, but can't actually be trusted to navigate. Pedaling was easier than I thought it's be, as I was expecting this to be pretty clunky. I did have a sore butt after, but it wasn't too physically challenging during. We did have to take breaks, but mainly because it was a hot day, and there are pretty things to look at. Getting through the posts at the crosswalks was a bit nerve wracking, but our driver steered us through no problem (not me. I'm a right steering wheel kind of person). We did this on a Friday 12 PM - 2 PM, so the recreational trail wasn't terribly crowded. The bell was in the center front basket where small children or bags can be kept. It was a bit awkward for me to reach when we needed to use it. I am 5'2, and maybe my arms are short. I have no reference. We rode from this rental spot to Lover's Point, which took us around 50 minutes, including 2 breaks we made to enjoy the scenery. Going back took us around 40 minutes, including 1 break for scenery. You are given a lock to put around a wheel and a bar on the surrey so it can't be ridden away by scoundrels. You don't have to worry about finding a post to secure it to. You pass a number of other Adventures By The Sea locations, so sometimes we just parked by their surreys to make sure we weren't blocking the trail at all. We weren't sure how long we would be gone for, so we paid for an hour at first and they said they would charge us additional if needed based on the return time, which ended up being 2 hours total for us. We felt this was the perfect amount of time to enjoy the surrey, and not feel rushed or bored. read more

Adventure by the Sea (ABS), has a few location along the Monterey Bay. Located near fisherman wharf, ABS offers variety of bikes to fit your need. Monterey Bay is a great area to rent a bike because of the bike path makes it easy to ride along the beautiful coast line. You are only allowed to stay in the bike path when renting a surrey bike. The whole process is pretty simple. Sign some forms, get instruction, and your on your way. Rates are by the hour, $20 for small and $30 for large surrey. It's definitely money well spent. Bike path leads to all the major attractions. The surrey bikes allowed the whole family to enjoy. The kids had a blast sitting in the front. The bike path and the surrey bikes was a big plus for wanting to rent. It provided a safe path. Will definitely rent again. read more

Convenient to fisherman's wharf but no parking close by - park in the wharf parking lot and walk over, not 5 minutes and easy to find. We rented 2 bikes for 1/2 day [4 hours], planning a 2 hour ride and lunch - the ride was cut short due to one bike battery being non-functional about an hour in. They sent another bike in a truck to meet us up near Ft Ord but took almost an hour from malfunction to new bike in hand. Our bike trip was cut short -- to the company's credit they refunded the rental on one of the bikes. Recommended. read more

Great place to rent bikes for the day! It was a beautiful day and what better way to explore the area than on a bike! The rental process is easy... let them know what bike you want to rent, fill out some paperwork, and start hitting the road. At first we rented the surrey but found it a little difficult to pedal; we decided to exchange it out and go for the cruisers instead. We ended up riding to the pier, lovers point, and everywhere in between. They do provide locks which was convent when visiting the pier. Yes, Monterey is beautiful. Yes, what you'll see on the bike is breathtaking. But... it's not anything you couldn't see on your own two feet. I found the bikes to be extremely uncomfortable. We are three people who are two large to fit in a small surrey but our weight was unbalanced in the large surrey. I spent the entire ride falling off the side and trying to sit on one butt cheek to compensate. I would only suggest getting a bike if you have small kids and forgot your multiple child stroller at home. Otherwise, this is a big waste of money. If you go past the hour (by a minute) they charge you the next half hour. Also, the area is very hilly and it is hard to bike that. There are metal poles along the street to "guide" your surrey. Why it is harder to drive that thing than a normal car, I'm not sure... read more

My family rented a few single-rider bikes at $8/hour to ride around Monterey. The process of renting them was fast and easy - it's just signing a waiver form while they take a copy of your credit/debit card. I really appreciated that they weren't sticklers for time since we came back a little past the hour and they didn't charge for an additional hour. The bikes are admittedly pretty old and the chain actually fell off one of our bikes. It was unfortunate but we were able to fix it ourselves and keep going. There's a nice bike trail from this location to Lover's Point with a great view of the water. Once you hit Lover's Point, the bike trail ends and you would continue on the streets. I believe they do take reservations for bikes but only if placed 24 hours in advance. We came on a Saturday at around 3pm and didn't have any trouble renting out bikes but I would recommend calling in beforehand to be safe. read more

My wife and I had a fantastic experience renting and riding an e-bike this week from the Alvarado location. Cloe was very kind and took care of us from the beginning to the end of our 3 hour rental. In fact, I accidentally left a valuable item in the front pouch of the e-bike and when I called to try and locate my lost item the following day, she found it and saved it for me until I arrived to retrieve the item. A very honest person and a great employee to the organization. I verbally notified management and wanted to extend the appreciation in writing. Today was so busy with the car show and sun out, there was a line in order to rent and there was ONE AMAZING employee holding the place down all by herself (shouts out Olivia). This is a review of the bikes. I know you can't expect much for a $25/4-hour tourist bike, but the bikes ("Breezer" bikes) were really much worse than I expected. Poorly maintained. My front wheel was out of true (not straight), causing the brakes to rub. The rear tire was under-inflated. The rear chainring skipped jarringly in some gears, due to either a very worn chainring or old chain. The fenders are loose and rattle noisily. They are very very heavy - very slow going up hills. The fenders and cargo rack add a lot of weight onto what is already a heavy beach cruiser bike. Next time I would try Bay Bikes down the street. They also have heavy-ish cruiser bikes, but maybe they're better maintained. And they have road bikes at a cheaper rate than Adventures by the Sea. When I told the owner about the maintenance issues he basically laughed and said yeah, these bikes get a lot of hard use. Ok, but I wish he had told me that before we rented them. And when I had said we wanted bikes that weren't too heavy, he shouldn't have said the Cruisers met that bill, and could have suggested their road bike option. On the plus side, the bike ride out to 17 Mile drive is phenomenal (we made it to the Lone Cypress). It's well worth doing and way better biking it than driving it. read more

Went in the store just curious about prices and the worker (bald guy with tats and glasses) answered every question in a rude manner. Tried to be friendly but all I got in return was rudeness and annoyed looks. Then when I came back to rent a large bike and he annoyingly told us to scan the sign and that was all the information he gave us we didn't know what to do after that. He kept telling us that we were blocking the way and told us to leave and go outside while we figured out how to rent the bikes. When we looked back 5 minutes later he saw a group of people, IN THE SAME SPOT WE WERE IN!!! He was helping them and gave them their bikes way sooner than us and we had gotten there sooner. Horrible experience if you see that particular worker don't even bother looks like he only cares about his pay check and time. read more

Rep says is an hourly rate and "rounded to the nearest half hour" to rent. We drove our two seat bike for 1hr. 13mins but were charged for 1hr. 30mins. So if you come here and rent a bike for 1hr. 1min. based on their policy they'll charge you for 1hr. 30mins. First bike rental place we use that runs their business this way. read more

Located right next to the Candy store and next to the Portola Hotel, this Adventures by the Sea location offers strictly Bike rentals. The staff here was super helpful and nice, and helped us set up bike rentals in a timely matter as we were eager to bike the 17-mile drive. The rentals come with a helmet and bike lock as well! We did the whole-day rental and returned the bikes by 7:30PM in the evening for $30. The comfort bikes we rented had a little pouch to store your valuables, and had a little map attached of the 17-mile drive. Rent the bike early, return the bike before the close and see a lot of the Monterey peninsula! read more

This was probably the big highlights of my vacation. Monterey is stunning and seeing it while touring around on a four seater bike just took it to the next level. The gentleman in the establishment was very professional and the bikes were in good repair. Our transaction was quick, he shows us the features and we were on our way. It's just a short jaunt to Cannery Row from this location and I highly recommend it. Great place & great service! We rented 3 bikes for 4 hours and rode al over the place! Down to the lighthouse, past PG - back toward Seaside, stopped for an amazing lunch & had a fantastic day. There was a bit of frosting (?) or something of the sort in all of the carry bags on the front of the bike, so I would just say maybe check those before sending them out, but other than that...great service! I went kayaking with this company and enjoy myself tremendously. First off, I want to praise our tour guide, Jan (If I remember properly). This woman was nice and full of information. She took her time with us and made sure we were properly fitted into our gear. She even double checked our life jackets and explained the importance of a proper fit. Then she took us down to the kayaks and gave a brief, simple explanation about paddling. This information may be repetitive for those who have kayaked before, but it only takes about 3 minutes before you're on your way into the water. They have doubles and singles but I opted for a single kayak on this trip. I am glad I did and I recommend this for people who like to be in nature. You feel more connected sitting on the water in the seaweed next to the otters and seals. The first few minutes of the trip you slowly paddle along the shore towards the aquarium as your guide explains about the water, seaweed, and wildlife. Our tour guide knew a lot about the water conditions and migration patterns of the animals. She explained the caring process for seals and otters and made sure we never disturbed the animals while paddling. She was aware of where our kayaks were and paused whenever we struggled to keep up. You can select a private tour or open tour where anyone can join. We chose the open tour but we were fortunate enough to go during the time of year when not many appointments are booked. This meant we got a private tour for a discounted rate! All the staff members are helpful and each one will help you to properly get into your gear and into the water. Our tour guide was very down to earth and talked about herself to bond with us. She also asked questions about us and made sure she knew what we liked or not in order to improve our visit. When she noticed we enjoyed the seals the most, she made an effort to stay longer and explain more about them. I do not recommend this trip for the elderly as you must paddle yourself around. Depending on the weather, you could possibly be going against strong winds and feel as if you aren't moving. At one point, I felt as if I was never going to reach shore but I knew I was safe with my tour guide. She was confident and explained how to paddle to avoid overworking yourself. Towards the end, my grandmother grew tired and Jan turned around, hooked her kayak up to my grandmother, and helped pull her back into shore. She understands that people grow tired and she looks out for her group. Once we got back to shore, she explained what to do and helped us get out of our wet suits. Yes, you will get wet but it's not too much. I did not need to change my clothes after this tour. But bring sunblock and lather up before you leave! After we were taken care of, she went straight to the back to set up her next tour! Very dedicated to her work and appears to enjoy herself. Never seemed to tire and even looked to be excited to do the bike tour for her next clients. I do recommend going during the morning trip as typically the winds are less aggressive but weather is unpredictable. The company is also great at helping you get a reservation and when I called a day before to move my time slot to late afternoon, they were very helpful and did it instantly with no complains or up charges. This most likely depends on how busy they are but the person who helped me was very understanding of my situation. Great experience and highly recommend to those who wish to see the wildlife and become disconnected from the crazy world. Very relaxing trip with interesting facts! read more

I went to UC Santa Cruz I have lived in Monterey I have seen these bikes all my life and for the first time rented one! The service was good (They do charge to the nearest HALF hour) We had 3 adults, 1 child, 1 infant Biked to Lovers Point Definitely NOT the easiest to peddle OR steer Also BE CARFUL when going through the poles on the bike path! I loved our adventure on the bikes. Be aware, they are quite difficult to peddle, but lots of fun. However, the gentlemen working was extremely rude and unprofessional. Treated me and my children very rudely. He spoke to the family that was waiting in front of us terrible and preceded to treat us the same way. I said "you are being very rude to the customers and there is no reason for it" he looked up and said "oh my god" as he rolled his eyes. I understand he was young and may not know better, but management needs to be more choosy when they hire. I will never return to store and do not recommend anyone else to either. read more
