THIS TRIP WAS AMAZING!! This was our first ever visit to New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, and lodging with Adventures on The Gorge was the BEST decision we could've made. We stayed in a beautiful cabin that was extremely clean and spacious with a picnic bench, firepit, and trees for hanging a hammock. We took a phenomenal 5 hour white water rafting trip down the New River with our very knowledgeable and personable guide, Greg! He guided us through huge rapids and even a thunderstorm! They even gave us snacks halfway through! We also zip lined with Adventures on the Gorge, and all of their employees are just so humorous and you can tell they love their jobs. 10/10 experience!!

Our guide Ben was amazing for our all day rafting trip that took us through 30 rapids over about 5 hours or so and we managed to stay in the boat for most of the trip!!

Stayed for 3 days in a glamping tent. The tent is really quite large, nice and sturdy. Very much enjoyed making a campfire in the firepit and sitting in the chairs provided to watch all the stars in the dark West Virginia night sky come out and twinkle--so lovely. This is something that we can't do in DC due to all the artificial lights that are on 24/7. I like the fact the glamping campsites are somewhat far away from each other, not on top of the next campsite, like some places are. Check-in was super easy and everything was in order upon arrival. I appreciate that when here, you can be as involved in the various offerings as you want to or just commune with nature. There's no pressure to do anything. All the staff I engaged with were friendly, with-it and welcoming. The walking trails were just okay, perhaps need a bit more TLC in spots that get washed out. Went to the Java Falls coffee shop one time during normal operating hours and it wasn't open; no one could tell us why this was so. Overall it was a good experience. I would definitely come back here.

Adventures on the Gorge is an all in one package! They have several options for lodging including tent camp sites, RV sites and cabins. This is a perfect place for the whole family to enjoy! There are quite a few activities to do on site like whitewater rafting, horseback riding, zip lining and more! The property has tons to offer and amazing views! There are gift shops, restaurants, a pool and bars on site. We went whitewater rafting on the lower New River. Our raft guide, Tri, was a rockstar! He made my first rafting experience one that will be hard to beat! All of the staff were friendly and the views were on point! This is a place you definitely want to check out!

We just got back from a 5 day and 4 night stay at AOTG, and can't wait to go back. Last summer my family of 4 spent 2 nights camping and did the ducky trip on the Upper New River. We loved it so much we brought our extended family. We reserved 2 camping spots in campground K to accommodate all 11 of us. Our group ranged in ages from 81-10, with both experienced camper and 1st timers. The sites were adjoining and spacious enough to spread out our 5 tents. Both sites had a picnic table and fire pit and plenty of tree cover from the midday sun. The Sunnyside bathhouse was just a short walk away (~5 min), which had clean showers as well as a laundry room. We showed up in a Saturday and there was live music that evening at the Rendezvous Lodge, which was a little further away. After a 7 hour drive it was cool to be able to relax at the campfire and to hear music in the distance. The next day all 11 of us did the Upper New River kayak trip with Guido. Guido and his team were expert guides whose focus on safety was apparent. They all were very personable and open and made the entire trip very enjoyable. Most of us were in kayaks, while seats on the raft were available for my parents. The trip is the perfect way for people of all ages and experience levels to take on the New. The whole family enjoyed lunch on the beach, especially the pasta salad! The kids loved Jump Rock and getting the opportunity to swim through out the day. The adults enjoyed the beverages on the trip back to campus after a long day on the river. That evening we had a wonderful dinner at Chetty's. The burgers were tasty, and the prices were very reasonable. The next day 7 of us took on the Lower New rafting trip, while my parents and the kids too young for the trip (under 12) explored New River Gorge National Park Visitor Center and some hiking trails. The Lower trip was so much fun, and we will definitely come back when our little ones are old enough to do it themselves. Our trip's lead guide was Thomas, and our raft guide was Hannah. Both were awesome. They both showed the same level of safety as the guides the day before, and made the first time rafters in our group comfortable. We all enjoyed the rapids, and lunch again (pasta salad 10/10.) After the trip the entire group from the rafting trip met at Chetty's with the guides to watch the trip video. It was a really cool way to end a great day. The next day we celebrated our daughter's 13th birthday with a fun morning on the Timber Trek Adventure Park. There were courses of 4 different difficulty levels. After a short intro on safety and the use of the equipment, our entire group spent 3 hours climbing ladders, crossing rope bridges and other obstacles, and zip-lining around the course. Our guides (Bree, Cam, Ivy and Will) were awesome and helped the little ones face their fears, and fostered an environment to have fun while doing hard things. That evening we had a birthday celebration at Smokey's On the Gorge. Everything there is amazing, we had steaks, pork chops, salmon and bbq. The star of the night was the bread pudding desert. Once again the servings were big, and the prices were very reasonable. We are already looking at a way to make another trip up to AOTG for Gauley Season this fall.

The New River in West Virginia was an awesome experience. Experienced some Class 3 and 4 rapids. It was cold in April. But we had such food. Beautiful water, beautiful views. Fun people. A definite recommendation.

This was a great first experience with white water rafting. We did the half day tour of the lower river, and the rapids were absolutely thrilling. Everyone on our raft got soaking wet, but no one was thrown out. Our guide, Amanda, was funny and kept us safe during the trip. She explained interesting features of the river to us as we cruised along and always prepared us for how to handle the upcoming rapids. I highly recommend this experience for anyone visiting the new river gorge area. I'm withholding 1 star because we had to wait around for a bit longer than usual in the morning because of some unforeseen staffing issues that the outfitter was having. However, we eventually got back on track and had a perfect day on the water.

So yeah...I did the Gravity ZipLine and I've never ZipLine'd in my life before. How was it? Well, if you've ever wondered what it was like flying without wings or an airplane this is for you (Also, I'm terrified of heights) INCREDIBLE. Probably top 3 things I've ever done in my life. They really set you up for success during the three hours you're doing the tour. You start small, medium, then of course the Adrenaline AKA LARGE. It was all great. You go over the safety equipment, you go over what is correct/incorrect, what is tight/loose, the ZipLine equipment, and expectations. You do about 7 Zips with #7 being the main show. Even being terrified of heights, I was 100% comfortable the entire time. Flying through a mountain on a ZipLine going about 70 mph I just have one thing to say after it all..."zip it away zip it away zip it away now!"

Whut water rafting on the New and Gauley Rivers has come a long long way since I first started enjoying this high adventure sport. The Upper Gauley is one of the greatest and most challenging white water rivers in North America when running during "Gauley Season" in the Autumn. Growing up around this area have been a number of white water guide companies. Adventures on the Gorge is at, in my opinion, at the apex of that experience. A campus has developed with a variety of lodging, from tents to cabins, on site, and amenities including a pool, coffee shop, restaurant and gift/clothing shop. Zip lining is an offering here, but on my most recent trip I didn't come for that service. I was exclusively here to run the Upper Gauley. Then of course is the actual guide service. I've contracted with several guide services on the two rivers over the years and have always been pleased with my experience with AOTG. The staff are friendly & helpful. Video services ate available to have a record of your visit to the river to look back on. I highly recommend using this offering. My most recent experience on the river was with 2020 Guide of the Year "Mogul" Mike Hunn. It was quite a day. Mike has been rafting in West Virginia since 1984, is a consummate professional, & quite knowledgeable about the Gauley River, how it runs at various flow rates and how it's changed over the years.

This year in addition to rafting we did the treetops zip lining canopy tour which was fantastic. Cullen and Ryan were informative, entertaining and extremely knowledgeable. The zip lining itself was a bit scary but at no time did I feel like I was in danger. It is definitely a safety first adventure where you are tethered at all times, even when changing lines. Even the guides follow the same rules. The value added piece of this adventure was the amazing information the guides dishes out. We learned a lot about the flora and fauna and also the genesis of why this zip line facility was built. There is an invasive Japanese beetle that is killing all the conifers in this forest, So they installed the zip line tour to fund treatment of their 40 acre property where they treat every tree every three years as needed. So not only was fun, it helps to save this amazing forest!

Lower New River trip in June 2021.

White-water rafting here at AOTG was definitely a highlight of our June 2021 family vacation trip to Fayetteville, WV. My wife, two sons (15 yrs, 13 yrs), and I enjoyed the full day-trip on the Lower New River, but did not stay at the lodge. We rented an AirBnB house in Fayetteville during our stay. The AOTG facility is located about 1 mile off Route US-19 on the northeast side of the gorge (opposite side from Fayetteville). Check-in will be in the main facility complex on the left as you enter. The resort was founded by visitors from Cincinnati, Ohio and has the feel of a corporate retreat area - which may be appealing for large family reunions. Check-in was easy. I liked that they asked folks to arrive early and get settled before orientation. Fooz was the expedition leader and he conveyed a fun sense of humor that put people at ease. After a 20 minute bus ride along narrow roads, everyone was dropped off at the initiation point (Cunard landing). The full-day expedition includes a catered lunch and gives you plenty of time for swimming, jumping off a rock (optional if you wish), and even "surfing" on some of the rapids. First, the Lower New River was delightful with a nice temperature in June for swimming. It was a perfect mix of moderate and challenging rapids for my teenage sons. My wife and I appreciated there were calm sections of the river where you can swim. Second, the final section when you pass under the New River Gorge Bridge is amazing. It's really something to stare up 875 feet to the bridge span and hear tales of people catapulting off the bridge in October (for Bridge Day) and landing everywhere. It makes you grateful to be doing this trip in June (and not on Bridge Day). Third, our raft guide (Amanda) was excellent and had a lot of prior experience. Finally, one advantage of going with AOTG is that the website makes it easy to sign-up for a rafting trip. I would definitely go with AOTG again! Be sure to do the full-day option. In my opinion, a half-day would be too rushed to enjoy the river (and you miss out on the delicious lunch!). At the end of the trip, my teenage sons asked when we could go white water rafting again!

I want to preface this review by saying that we did not stay overnight in a room at The Greenbrier,…read morebut we did spend most of the day there, and I'm glad we did. When you pull in, you will be greeted by security at the front gate. We advised them we were there for the bunker tour and to do some shopping and they gave us a parking pass and directions to the best place to park. The resort is iconic, huge and pristine. We walked our dog around the grounds and up to the main building. Unfortunately, even though they say that the resort is dog friendly, there are some areas where dogs are not allowed. So I waited outside while my husband spoke to someone at the front desk about reserving a spot for the bunker tour. When he returned, I went inside while he stayed out front with our pup. When you walk in the decor hits you all at once and, if you are a Fallout fan like I am, everything just feels so familiar and comfortable. The bold, eccentric colors and patterns, the chandeliers and unique furniture... It's all there. I wandered through the shops which are upscale and fun to browse, even if you're just looking. I bought some giant macarons which were priced incredibly reasonably and really enjoyed them. All of the staff I encountered were friendly and helpful, and even without reservations, we were able to get tickets to the bunker tour. Be advised that they made it very clear to us that getting tickets "day of" is not the standard experience, so I do recommend reserving tickets if you want to do the tour. The vault tour itself is probably closer to four stars, but it's definitely a must. Knowing there was a fully built secret congressional bunker hidden underneath this glamorous resort for decades is wild. You walk through the old dorm rooms and meeting areas and see how it was all set up so long ago. You're not allowed to take any photographs, but I did read some basic information before coming. Still, reading about it and seeing it are two totally different things. It cost well over $100 for the two of us to do the tour and that is before tip so it definitely isn't cheap. It would have also been nice to have more seating, especially for things like watching the video, etc. My feet hurt a little after the tour from standing so long on the hard concrete floors of the bunker. The only reason that we did not end up spending the night is that we really wanted to be inside some of the main buildings and although they do offer dog friendly accommodations, they are only located within certain cottages kind of on the edges or outskirts of the property. There is also a $250 fee for dogs so we decided at the time that it would not be worth it for us, however, full disclosure: we regret that decision. We definitely should have spent the night. It was a once in a lifetime experience for me and if I ever get the chance to come back here I will definitely get a room and stay as long as I can, soaking up the ambiance and anemoia.

Dorothy Draper began transforming the Greenbrier in 1946 after it had been used as a military…read morehospital, and it appears the updates have been minimal, if nonexistent, since! Slouchy couches, stained carpet pulling away from the walls. The cheapest daily rack rate on a weekday is a whopping $400+/night, not including all their BS fees: $49 daily resort fee per room and 9.75% Historic Preservation Fund, 6% sales tax. SO NOT WORTH IT! Seriously, I get keeping the iconic Draper theme, but you gotta upkeep everything to warrant that price! I stayed here for 3 nights for a conference, and had multiple interactions with staff from calling to make reservations for activities, the bunker tour, dinner at the main dining room, bowling and the conference room facilities. Customer service ranged here from very nice, cheerful and helpful to unaccommodating, aloof, and just plain rude. When asked questions about the facility or amenities, the staff would often give me blank stares or just shrug and say they didn't know. I was checked in by a trainee who did not give any direction on how to get to my room in the BOONIES (Copeland Hills) and we drove around aimlessly until we gave up and went back to valet to get directions. When I asked if I could be in the main hotel with my coworker at check in, another snooty employee (senior or the trainer, I dunno) blatantly said "no, your group is assigned to the cottages", which was 100% a lie because my coworker simultaneously checked in with another trainee and was given a room in the main hotel. The next day, a second coworker was also given a room in the main hotel. They both complained their rooms were creepy feeling, dirty and in need of some major renovations. So I guess depending on how you look at it, I had it better since my cottage in the boonies wasn't as old and was in pretty good shape. The wait staff at the conference was too efficient! I left my untouched dessert literally for a few minutes at my seat and when I returned it was gone! My fiancé did the bunker tour and the bourbon tasting. He was the only one at the bourbon tasting at 5:00pm and no one showed up for the 6:00pm either. At the end, he was given a non itemized bill for $88 (the base price was $65) and then he tipped on top of the $88 thinking that was the base rate! Clearly the astronomical service fees were already embedded in there. Throughout our stay, we wondered where everyone was. Despite being reservation only, the main dining room was at best 25% full when we were there on a Friday night. Everywhere we went: basically empty. The many random sitting rooms, the restaurants, the casino, the bowling alley, indoor pool, the bars. The only activity that had a decent amount of people was the bunker tour. There were many private events we saw set up everywhere though, and our conference alone was about 300. So maybe that's their thing. My coworkers had mini fridges in their room in the main hotel, my room in the cottages did not. My coworker called room service for ice (there are no self service ice machines) and it was delivered 2 hours later when she was sleeping. The room service delivery fee is $5 for the main hotel, but $20 for my cottage in the boonies. Why do I have to pay 4x in delivery fees when I asked to be in the main hotel to begin with? Ridiculous. The Greenbrier is old and busted and riding on the "historic" factor to draw in guests. If I stayed here for leisure and paid for this out of my own pocket, I would be even more pissed.

Being off the beaten path, it's easy to forget about life in the "real world." It was so quiet and peaceful; you only hear the sounds and see the sights of nature that have been lost in far too many places. I stayed in the Farmhouse Inn, the main house of the resort. It was clean, tastefully designed and well-furnished. I was the only one staying in this space, so again, it was very quiet. I spent a few hours outside in the evening chatting with a few other guests who were staying on the grounds. We sat out on the patio area during this time, and even decided to have our dinner there, as the weather was beautiful. While we ate, several deer payed a visit to the grounds to get dinner for themselves. Speaking of dinner, it was fantastic. I had a fresh salad, that I can only assume came from the organic garden on the grounds. Additionally, I had a vegetable lasagna and finished my meal with some delicious apple cake. Since I was leaving early the next morning for work, a breakfast basket was prepared for me with a variety of baked goods, orange juice, fruit, and a serving of the best baked oatmeal I ever had. Gail and Gary, the owners, were fantastic as well. They were extremely helpful from booking through my checkout. There were several emails sent to me prior to my visit with all the directions and information I needed to know for my arrival. Since I was arriving during their off hours, they prepared a binder for me that got me to my room and settled in until we had a chance to meet later in the evening. If you are interested in connecting with the outside world during your stay, cell service is spotty. I was told that only some cell service work there. However, there is a public phone that anyone can access if needed at no cost. In addition, the Farmhouse Inn has wifi. I don't believe this is true for all the outer houses. But since you come by the Farmhouse for meals, and any other time you want to, it shouldn't be an inconvenience. Overall, I have absolutely no complaints. I would HIGHLY reccomend this place if you're in the area.

Service, food and ambience were great. Price was right, too. The trout sandwich was tasty and the…read morebeer was cold!

The resort was fun and relaxing however, there were items on the menu at the resort restaurant that…read morewere not available. We did not have cell phone service at our cabin online. It showed that we would have a landline service at our cabin however, it did not work I reported it to the front desk and they told me that it was unknown problem throughout the resort that they were unable to get fixed. we stayed in the ERICA cabin and it was super clean very comfortable although the couch needed a great deal of updating the cabin was very cool with the AC running. The bed was super comfortable when it was very hot. The cabin was in a very secluded shaded area along the river. We did get amazing service at the resort restaurant by Autumn. She was our waitress every time we dine there and she provided amazing service and deserves a promotion. She is an exceptional waitress and make sure her customers are happy and meets the needs of their dining experience. The front desk seem to be unsure about any of our concerns regarding the phone not working the TV literally being 14 inches to corner and diameter in the bedroom. If you are like my husband and I we have to have the TV on to fall asleep at night and this caused a great deal of issues. The TV was so tiny. I am a germaphobic. to the point that I do not shower, barefoot or sleep on the sheets or blanket provided by the resort, hotel, motel and breakfast, etc. at this resort I felt completely comfortable walking around barefoot taking a shower barefoot and I even slept in the sheets that we're already on the bed even though we brought our own to put on the bed just in case the only changes we made is we took the beautiful quilt off the bed and use our blanket that we brought from home and that's only because from experience the quilts don't always get laundered every time the place is cleaned. Not to say that this does not happen at this resort but in past experiences, this has happened at other resorts hotels/motels so we just play on the safe side if you are a germaphobe you will feel quite at home there is no dishwasher in the ERICA cabin and there is no Wi-Fi at the ERICA cabin. I did utilize the washer and dryer to wash a blanket and it worked perfectly. They provided laundry detergent, fabric softener, and they had little bottles of shampoo and conditioner for use when showering One thing I do want to mention is that if you rent the ERICA cabin, you do have to carry all your belongings across a fairly long bridge to get to your cabin. The cabin is not accessible to motor vehicles. as far as the restaurant is concerned, we did not have a single bad meal. Everything was excellent but it was $20-$30 a plate depending on what you ordered and if you ordered a soda, it was almost 3 dollars Per person they did have a nice gift shop where you could buy shirts and different souvenirs and of course, if you are a fly fisherman, this is a fly fisherman's Paradise. We did not go there to fish. It was nice and relaxing to just stand there and watch the trout swim in the water overall I do recommend this place and I would go back again. It was a wonderful getaway for the weekend just to forget about everything that is going on in your present life and stress that you deal with daily. I completely forgot about all that while we were there what a wonderful experience!!
