Years ago I complained about coughing in the mornings and after dinner. Dr. Lamaster had me do annual chest CT. The second year the CT showed a gallstone. The coughing progressed into choking, gagging and recently trouble swallowing. After the coughing complaint, I reported random diarrhea, which was dismissed. Then I complained of vomiting. For years my symptoms got worse. Finally the vomiting was so bad, I insisted on seeing a surgeon. The gallstone that was documented on my medical records years prior turned into Chronic Cholecystitis, which can be life threatened. It can also lead to Pancreatic cancer, from which my mother died; she too was undiagnosed for years. Advocate Ravenswood let me suffer for years and harmed my long term health. This is not the only undiagnosed issue. Dr. Mikesell and Dr. Lamaster both dismissed my complaints about cognitive dysfunction for years with repeated complaints from me. The dysfunction now seems to have been caused by seizures. Two head injuries are in my medical records and they dismissed me and never followed up. Negligent or incompetent? Does it matter which? Also I rarely saw Dr. Lamaster. His residents were the only appointments I could get. One told me that I did not need to check my blood sugar... I am diabetic. Another put in my medical records that I had high blood pressure, which is incorrect and caused me problems with the anesthesiologist prior to gallbladder surgery. I have many other more examples of incompetence but individually they do not seem important. However, when a medical practice has consistent mistakes and the residents do not read your chart, they put your life at risk. Chronic Cholecystitis can be life threatening. It inflamed my pancreas and liver. read more

I'm a little shocked to see all the negative reviews! We've been visiting this doctor's office since my son was born back in October and have had nothing but positive experiences. The building is bright and welcoming, as are the folks working the front desk. I also appreciate how clean it is. Our Doctor, Dr. Serrano, has been absolutely wonderful. From the jump she's always expressed genuine excitement to see us and our baby. We feel so comfortable and confident in her care, she really eases any worries we've had as we navigate parenthood! I've called the help line more than once when I've had questions or concerns and there is always a doctor ready to assist. So far, I'm really impressed with all experiences I've had here and want to thank them for keeping my baby healthy! read more

I had a gallstone documented in my medical files for years. Each year I would complain of signs of gallbladder disease: coughing, gagging, choking and finally trouble swallowing, intermittent and random diarrhea, stomach issues and at the end violent vomiting. Finally I insisted on seeing a surgeon for my gut issues and by that time I had development Chronic Cholecystitis which inflamed my pancreas and liver which is a precursor for pancreatic cancer, from which my mother died. Dr. Lamaster shrugged his shoulders and told me to find another practice when I confronted him about this negligence. This is not the only undiagnosed problem they missed. Dr. Miksell and Dr. Lamaster never followed up with repeated complaints about cognitive disfunction I have been experiencing for year. How much damage could have been done to my brain by years of seizures? I will find out at another facility. However, dismissal of any and all of my symptoms has been a difficult life and made me more likely to get cancer and possibly dementia. I have been going to Advocate Medical Group for about 20 Years or So, I have had the best doctors here. My Previous Dr. Retired In 2019. She was an Caring and Compassionate doctor, she cared about my health. I miss seeing her. I now have another Caring and Compassionate doctor here at Advocate Medical Group. I have been seeing her since March of 2019. She takes the time to listen to when I have a say. I also love ILL Masonic Hospital Medical Center. I have been in that hospital a few times. I have multiple chronic illnesses and I have been coming to this clinic (4600 N. Ravenswood in Chicago) since before any of those got diagnosed. I have to go in a lot, and I don't always get to see my specific PCP because of this but I love Dr. Gutsell anyway, the quality of care he has given me over the years has been top notch, plus he never ever tells me anything is "just anxiety," and any requests I make, we have thorough discussions about and if I need a referral, he gives me one. He treats me like the person I am, and not just a number which is saying a lot considering our healthcare system as a whole. Every single practitioner I have met with at the clinic has been amazing. I've got a complex medical history and sometimes, you just need to cry it out. Dr. Gutsell and the rest of his associates/colleagues they let me have the space I need to do just that when it's necessary and that means a lot when I've had experiences elsewhere where I've felt dumb either for coming in or for getting a little emotional. There are tons of staff that there deserve raises and then some. I can't remember every single persons name but as far as nurses and medical assistants, I regularly come into contact with Brit (she's amazing and if I'm on my way in or out of the hallway and it's not with my normal PCP she always asks what's going on and is genuinely interested in my wellbeing). Jake B. is one of the nurses there and he is hands down one of my favorite people both in a professional sense and just interpersonally. He is really good at his job, knows a lot, helps if I'm ever actually dealing with anxiety about a new/possible condition I am dealing with and has even been respectful of my anger if and when it's ever showed up because being chronically ill is a whole ass job and sometimes your emotions get the best of you. I will never forget most of the things Jake has done for me especially. Hannah, oh gosh, I don't remember her name, but she's another nurse and has blonde hair, she is also one of the most kind people I've met, but I haven't known or interacted with her since the begining of my time with this clinic. Still lovely, and I always ask someone to tell both herself and Jake if they could tell them I said hi whenever I do have to come by. Now onto the office staff. Carlos and Norma are two names that I have known since my first trip in. to establish care. Carlos always offers a smile and a laugh, and Norma?! she's normally a person I get on the phone, and she's held my hand through some of the most difficult moments in my life, going out of her way to listen to me and validate when it was needed and that I will never forget. Yesterday I had to go in for an ER recheck so that was on Tuesday July 29th around 4:10 PM and I ran into Carlos as usual, said hello. He said hi, and called be my name. Another front desk staff said, "Wait, did you say insert name here and the other lady said "wait you both know insert name here and my face lit up when I realized it was Amela and Edina talking to one another about me. It's crummy, because it's my doctors office, but all of those names I have listed literally make me feel like a VERY important patient/person and while that might not mean much to some, when your body is always actively trying to mess with you? Stuff like what all of the names listed above and will always do for me goes such a long way. I wouldn't be doing nearly as well as I am without Dr. Gutsell's help, Jake, Hannah, Brit, Carlos, Amela, Edina, Norma, and so on. So I guess even though this is a review, it's also my like trying to tell all of them that I appreciate and see them? Oh, during yesterdays visit, the resident I saw, Allison!? She's going to make a phenomenal doctor because she already is and she has that empathy on point. Please, please, please, if someone in management for this particular office sees this?! Please tell all of them what an amazing job they are all doing and the lasting impression they have left on this 30 something woman who constantly feels as though her body and immune system are falling apart. If I could give 0 starts I would. Called in June to make an appointment with gynecologist, they ran my insurance (BCBS PPO) and confirmed I had coverage and scheduled an appointment for July. Went in for the appointment today to be told by receptionist that as of July 1st, the hospital has ended their contract with my insurance and I was no longer covered. No one informed me of this change and am extra frustrated about this since I had called out of work to come to this stupid appointment in the first place and now I have to find care elsewhere. read more

Physician Charles Crotteau appears to have dementia. I was off work for a few weeks and I tried to go back to work with restrictions but Liberty Mutual wouldn't let me because this is workman's compensation and all my follow up's had to be completed first. Then Dr. Crotteau has the nerve to ask me when am I ready to go back to work even though I was told to stay off work. This physicians team I don't know who, but one of them put in false entries into my chart of conditions I never was diagnosed with. Then I ask him to fix the issues and he completely ignores me because the task is way too mentally challenging to simply call me and fix some error. I don't think Dr. Crotteau is fit to be a physician. read more

I came here a couple days ago to get a flu shot because they were doing a drive-through clinic during COVID-19. They are the only place I could find doing it in the city, and luckily they're less than a half mile away, so it worked out well. The nurse who administered the shot was quick. We had done eCheck-in the day before, so that took care of any need for an insurance card, consent forms, etc. she asked that I wait 15 minutes after receiving the shot to make sure there were no complications, and that was that. I'd taken the first appointment for the morning so I was in and out just as the next was arriving. Quick, efficient, as physically distanced as possible given the treatment. I would definitely recommend this for anyone else who, like me, breaks out in a cold sweat at the thought of being near someone who's not in their household or entering a building that is not their own home! read more

As I sit on hold for the second time today I am reminded of the extremely poor service you receive via Advocate. If it weren't for my 2 Drs. I would leave and never look back. The customer service is terrible to the point I would like to know who is training these people. The wait times in person and on hold are awful. And the app response time is no better. Often time they just read your messages to be nosey and have no solution or don't pass messages to the appropriate department. The customer service team should be fired and revamped immediately. read more

However, AMG/Advocate-Aurora a nonprofit has turned this into a business. Survey after a phone call, survey after a visit, survey just because, and the infamous white thank-you cards that get sent to you after a procedure. All the time, money, branding can be ruined when you can't get regular customer service, which ironically is what they are striving for: 1) 4-6 months for an appointment 2) Can't call the office directly; the call center may send the right message and the office if they get it may return your call 3) The problem I had 3-5-2024. My appointment was for 620pm. A system was down at work and got to my appointment at 642pm. The receptionist a female black with blonde and black braids who was not wearing an ID and refused to give me her name when asked said I was late and needed to reschedule. I asked her to call in back as they are usually around after the appointments. She said she would not do that and I needed to reschedule. I asked for a supervisor, she told me I needed to reschedule my appointment. I sat in the waiting room as I had not way to contact the office. Finally, I did leave a message on the portal. They spend a lot of money on a campaigns for customer service and am seriously looking to leave advocate because of the items listed above. "Would you recommend us to family and friend?" REALLY? Please me a survey after reading this if you really want to fix it. I have been in law enforcement administration and HR for 40 years, I know how to treat people and what is expected. I went there because of possible broken ribs. I was examined and had xrays taken. They said I had 2 broken ribs. After reading my release papers, I discovered that at my visit there, they had recorded my Blood pressure at 207!!! Yet the doctor NEVER mentioned it to me!!!!!! This was life threatening! Yet no doctor noticed or mentioned it! I went there again, to complain about their incompetence, and they basically told me that "sh*t happens". For this visit they charged an additional $595. The irony of these vistis was: A visit to Sarasota Memorial hospital in Florida showed that I had 5 broken ribs, not 2. immediate Care Center on 98th Western Chicago is horrible. Customer service and patient care is despicable. I took my elderly mom who is a dialysis patient and has cardiac concern, in for possible pneumonia. There were approximately 8 people in the waiting area. At 1259pm we were notified that there was no Dr on duty only a nurse practitioner and she was going on break and would not returned for an hour. At 1pm we were told she'd left the building and would not return to resume seeing patients until 2pm. The receptionist took a 30 minute break and people coming in had to wait to check in. Upon her return she informed new comers that the nurse practitioner was on break until 2pm and that they could wait or go somewhere else. An ankle sprain was seen before an asthmatic and my mom who has dialysis concerns as well as a heart condition. Where on earth do you stop patient care to eat. DO NOT GO HERE PLEASE!!! read more

Do NOT go here. I went to see an orthopedic Dr. Brown for an ankle injury that happened 4 months prior to seeing her. She took a very conservative approach and wasted 2 months trying to test to see what works best. She was supposed to order me a script for anti-inflammatory and pain meds but it never got called in. Finally she ordered an MRI and found I had torn ligaments but still thinks icing it and resting it will be enough for it to heal even though it's been like this for 5 months at this point. During the whole process she never listened to me and was condescending. I ended up getting a second opinion at my dr where I moved from and was able to diagnose and schedule me for surgery in the same day. I am now happily on my way to a full recovery post surgery. So bad that physicians set up own portals, but how does one know that ? One may choose instant entry to LiveBad to last 14 days, but that doesn't work either. I went on the app to get an urgent care appt. The nearest sites stated no online appt. I went to a site at 2535 S. king drive at about 5:45 to be told that they only had a virtual doctor. I informed that my knee was bothering me. The nurse reached out to the doctor who did not respond until I was prepped for the appointment. (Timing is good but awful services. I would not have driven there had I known the appt was only virtual). Upon leaving them, I called the OakLawn Advocate site at 6:15 where I was informed they were not taking anymore walk-ins. (Seriously). I considered each site because of its wait time. the OakLawn site doesn't close till 8:00. I did not know that urgent care would turn away people like I live in a third world country with limited resources. read more

I have encountered nothing but personable, kind, efficient interactions with staff members for all in-person events.With phone scheduling people, sometimes I do end up with someone who doesn't seem to understand the questions they are asking when I ask for clarification. Spaces are always very clean and prepared. My doc and the specialists have been very knowledgeable and take their time during appointments. I don't know what others expect in this age of numbers-driven medical care, but Advocate has been terrific. read more

Doctors are rushed. They do not review and follow up on previous issues. The lab is sloppy. Frequently forget to verify name and DOB of patient when drawing blood. The transcribing of recorded office visits are usually faulty. English doesn't seem to be the first language of the people who are transcribing the recorded visit with the doctor. Much of the equipment at IL Masonic Hospital, the preferred Chicago hospital, is antiquated. Medical care is = to that of 3rd world countries. Doctors are hesitant to refer patients to specialists or for MRI's because the cost involved lowers their bonus at the end of the year. When referring a patient for a test they op for CT scans--much more radiation but much lower cost than an MRI. Corporate medicine of this nature is detrimental to one's health. If you want top quality medical care, try Northwestern or Rush. Teaching hospitals and affiliated doctors do more for their patients without cost being the first consideration. Both treat patient as people not numbers and dollar signs. All patients should be given options related to their care---not given the least expense option. read more

Waited 4 weeks for an appointment before they cancelled on me 2 hours before. Asked for a reschedule told me it would be 10 weeks out. Said it didn't matter if they cancel the appointment is it is "Acceptable". Going to NorthShore where they got me an appointment within 48 hours. read more

Desk staff was polite enough, but booking anything with the same doctor is nearly impossible. Many of the doctors are in training, so are unavailable to see after a few months or cannot be booked more than 4 weeks out. This makes continuity of care nearly impossible. Policy is that desk staff will call you when your doctor's books are open, but they do not call. This happened a number of times, causing me to be late on immunizations. My daughter had trouble gaining weight, had milk pouring from her nose, made a clicking sound when nursing(lack of suction), and many other medical issues. They had me meet with their lactation consultant whom I later found out had absolutely no certifications or expertise in breastfeeding. I was shuffled around, ignored, and told to "do more" to provide for my child who was not gaining weight. Their treatment suggestion was to "monitor her weight" to see what happened. Two years after first coming to Advocate, I finally got a diagnosis of a cleft palate for my child. This is an incredibly common birth defect which is visible when a child opens their mouth. It is usually diagnosed within minutes of birth. My daughter saw 19 doctors at Advocate and not a single one did their job with care. I went to docs at Masonic, Ravenswood, and Irving and Western. If you want your child to be safe and healthy, go somewhere else. read more

I cannot stand Advocate Medical Group any longer and have recently made the shift to Edward-Elmhurst with already far better results. The quality of physicians in Advocate network is so inconsistent from one hospital location to the next, with Good Samaritan being by far the worst. Generally they seem to lack job satisfaction or patient empathy, but worse, showed incompetence in missing important findings that were picked up in follow up care elsewhere. There were exceptions but they didn't make up for the sub standards of other physicians and departments, namely urology and mammography. Customer service across the board was a joke. How many individuals does it take to change a light bulb? No customer wants to be shifted through the phone system, retelling their request a dozen times only to not get a straight answer or a satisfactory response. Personnel clearly hate their jobs. Read the employee reviews on Glassdoor. Enough is enough and I've taken my care (and my money) elsewhere. read more

Good doctors. TERRIBLE office support staff. What follows is a list of ways they have dropped the ball in dealing with us as we prepared to have our first baby: - No ability to communicate with my wife's previous doctor to retrieve her medical records. Instead, they put the burden on my wife to get what they needed. When she spoke with her old doctor, he was absolutely shocked that they conducted their practice like this. - In advance of an ultrasound appointment, they gave us a scare by calling my wife on a holiday weekend and leaving an extremely vague voicemail telling her she needed to get a COVID test in the next couple of days (again, during a holiday weekend). It turned out to be a basic communication problem that could have been easily avoided if the support staffer had known what she was talking about. In the meantime, we spent a long weekend being worried over nothing, unable to talk to the specific staffer who left the voicemail because Advocate uses a generic answering service. - When their system went down the morning of a routine visit, they canceled my wife's appointment. When did we learn about this? When we arrived at the office for the appointment, after already taking a vacation day from work to be there! We're in the middle of a pandemic with a baby on the way, so we've decided to tough it out with Advocate until the baby is born, just to keep our care consistent and avoid complications with a change in doctors. (Also, we're scared that Advocate will find even more creative ways to screw up if we expect them to transfer our records to the new place.) If any doctor we have dealt with at Advocate were to leave to join another practice, we would follow that doctor in a heartbeat, overjoyed to leave Advocate behind. read more

Five stars for my new primary care doctor, Dr. Rebecca Krasaeath! She's still doing her residency, but thankfully she's staying in the city when she finishes this summer. It's difficult to find a doctor who a) really listens, b) takes women seriously, and c) doesn't ignore all physical symptoms after learning that a patient has a mental illness (PTSD). She's warm, friendly, down to earth, thorough, and explains things clearly. I've never felt rushed or dismissed, and when mysterious symptoms persisted, she treated them instead of waving them off as an exaggeration (something that happens to women far too often) or some bizarre manifestation of my PTSD. She has also been very kind about my intense phobia of blood draws. I had to knock a star off because the rest of the practice is... less than great. The front desk staff were incredibly rude the first time I arrived for an appointment - I didn't know I had to check in on the 1st floor, and when I walked to the elevator to go straight upstairs because that's where the sign told me I could find my doctor, they barked at me in an angry tone of voice. That was rude and uncalled for, and I told them as much. They've been fine ever since, but I'm uneasy with them after that. REVIEW EVERY STATEMENT VERY CAREFULLY before making a payment. I was wrongly charged for a $241 line item (it was some kind of 1st visit code) that my insurance company doesn't allow and cannot be billed to me - this was clearly stated on the EOB. I had to call to get this corrected, and I'm told it will take about 2 weeks to get the billing coding corrected and a refund issued. Finally, some of the nurses are warm and set my anxious patient self at ease, while others are chilly and stand-offish. I know they have a grueling job, so I try to be understanding. Also, I got my DTAP vaccine, and the nurse who administered it did an amazing job - it was over before I even realized! I got a flu shot during another visit, and ouch! Bottom line, if I didn't think my doctor was great, I'd look elsewhere. read more

Dr. Thalia Torres at Illinois Masonic is too busy to see existing patients in crisis (not bc of the condition, but bc there are no openings), too busy to schedule a post-hospitalization visit within 8 weeks, and too busy to return phone calls. (The number listed is for a centralized call center, and even THEY can't get through or cajole the practice into returning calls!) The last straw was that when I did present, I found they had MOVED but did not notify me. The response I got from the RN 'Clinical Supervisor' was "I'm sorry the USPS failed to deliver the letter to you." (The reminder text didn't specify an address. They are VERY concerned about confirming that you will show up, but don't tell you where to go even tho it is a new location!) When I asked why Dr. T had not called back despite 4 documented requests to do so, the man said only that it was up to her to return calls, not the practice. No apologies for multiple potentially life-threatening lapses in office procedures were offered by this decidedly rude customer service guy - only CYA justifications and excuses. Too bad, bc Dr. T is nice enough and seems competent. Unfortunately Advocate Medical Group doesn't seem to understand that if you can't ever get in to see your PCP, that doc serves no purpose. Hey, Dudes (& Gals), the reason I HAVE an Internal Medicine doc is so that I don't have to use your ER for an office visit! Someone should let BC/BS know about this, so they don't get stuck paying the exorbitant costs of Advocate Medical Group's short-sighted policies... My next stop? Northwestern Medical Center, where my medically challanged husband gets incredible care! I said so to the customer service (very funny!) lackey though he clearly could have cared less - my departure opens up appointment slots in this obviously overfull doctor panel, no doubt. I received some lab results that were high and when I came in the nurse practitioner was brash, rushed and had a poor bedside manner. At the end it was have a nice day in a condescending manner. Please do not come here. You simply are cattle and with this rushed care you more than likely will have serious illnesses or issues missed. What a NIGHTMARE. I called and set up an appointment, asking if they took my insurance. They said they did. Went to said appointment and confirmed again that my insurance was accepted. They said it was. Months started to go by after calling every month and them telling me they were having issues billing my insurance. EIGHT MONTHS later, I was told that they didn't accept my insurance and I was responsible for the whole bill. Talk about a punch to the gut. So now I'm on a payment plan because I don't have gobs of money laying around. I then get a call that I was sent to collections. Even though I've been paying on time, every month, diligently. Well, apparently someone thought I had not been paying every month. They couldn't even explain to me why I was sent over in the first place since I had been paying. They then reversed it. I figured I might as well put my hard earned health care dollars to work and get an annual check-up for the first time in the 21st century. It's not that I'm afraid of doctors. It's just that I a) am quite healthy and, 2) I recently got health insurance for the first time in years. It's such a nice feeling... Anyway, this was pretty much everything you would want for a "Family Practice." There was a big parking lot. The office was very clean yet not too sterile. The receptionist was friendly and actually seemed to enjoy her job. My doctor, Dr. Nguyen, was personable and knowledgeable. I was assigned to him at random but I will definitely ask for him again. The whole process was very efficient: I filled out the "first visit" paperwork, had my vitals tested, consulted with the doc, got a flu shot and had a blood sample taken in less than 1 1/2. I have since been back twice, both for this bad cold turned sinus infection. Drs. Vastola and Chen are both professional and concise. Their 8-10AM walk-in clinic didn't have a long wait as I had imagined and was taken back quite quickly. The staff is friendly. Note for uninsured: I've now learned it's $91 for the first visit and $53 for each subsequent visit as an established patient. 4 stars instead of 5 because the doctor knew I was uninsured and ordered what turned out to be $700 in bloodwork. Necessary, I know, but it would have been nice to know in advance somehow...or if she had acknowledged it prior to ordering. read more

Just saw Dr. Gong. Probably one of the only doctors I have been to in awhile who has people skills. Listened to me. Engaged with me. Didn't interrupt. Empathized with me. Made me feel like a friend. I have seen a lot of doctors who just get down to business and won't listen to all of my symptoms, etc. Dr. Gong listened to everything. Even my stupid anecdotes. He said so many times "I can understand that". It's amazing what those words can do. To be understood by a Dr? Fantastic! He also has a great sense of humor. Very personable. I would highly recommend this place... I went in today as a new patient needing both a PCP and help for back pain that left me walking around the city like a hunchback (I'm 24 and have never had anything like that happen to me). I called at noon because the pain was bad enough that I was afraid I had done something really bad and they had an appointment available at 2pm. Dr. Justine Parker is a miracle worker! She is a DO that is great at what she does. She was kind, efficient, and professional. I knew she was doing everything she could to make me feel better. So, Dr. Gregory moved on from the practice which was so disappointing. Well, I ended up booking an appointment with Dr. Andrew Guzman. When I got to the office, I checked in, and was sent to a room in about five minutes which was really great, I didn't want to sit there in the waiting room stressing about the appointment. The nurse was really super friendly and even shielded my eyes from the scale and didn't tell me my weight because I said, "oh no I hate this part!" She was just super cool. Then I asked her, "Is Dr. Guzman nice?" She gushed, "Oh he's wonderful!" I started to feel better. Then he came in, and she was right, such a nice person!! Really sweet, really caring, listens thoroughly, and doesn't do the whole blaming everything on 'you need to drop 20 lbs', which honestly I think people avoid doctors for this reason alone. I have had some good and bad experiences here. I usually see Dr. Cano and she's wonderful- very efficient and actually listens to you. She has dispensed some really great medical advice. However, I do have to agree with some reviewers about this place being way too busy with too many patients. There have been occasions where I have been waiting to meet with a doctor for over an hour which is infuriating to say the least. I also have to agree with some other reviewers about the front desk folks being surly and I would almost say rude. Overall, I would say I like this clinic because of my doctor, but if she were to leave, I would follow her. I'm not married to this clinic. read more

Doctors here are good. But the back office the billing and customer service is very bad and frustrating. The office had a referral for the visit we did, but they told my insurance they don't have a referral. I am being thrown between my insurance and the back office. Back office doesn't want to verify with my doctor's office, whether we have the referral. On top of it, the rude behaviors and answers is totally not acceptable, better avoid. My regular doctor here, Dr. Schuneman, is the greatest. I've had to go in for emergency "doctor-of-the-day" visits a few times too where I got a random doctor and they were great too! Edited to take one star off for the attitude of the reception staff person who acted acted like I was a big pain in the arse because I called twice in 48 hours regarding a prescription I desperately needed refilled. read more

Review is based on staff. Extremely rude staff. God forbid you have questions. Poor communication from staff and nurses. I had to call myself to receive blood work results after waiting over a week. Why work there if you are that miserable? Came in to pick up paper work and staff claimed I was in the wrong location and was very rude.
