These are absolute scammers! My husband and I signed a contract for both of us at $28 per month each with a manager named Andrew, but we were charged $28 twice a mounth from each of us! After a long illness, I came back to the gym and was told I had a $350 debt and my account was blocked. Later it turned out that this Andrew was a fraud and had been fired for it. When I asked them to review my case, they said I was still required to pay the full amount, even though the front desk staff had told me that this issue could be resolved and that many people had experienced similar situations. The head manager was absolutely unpleasant, showed no understanding, and simply shifted all the responsibility onto me instead of their own employee.This has been the worst experience of my life with a gym. AFC FITNESS decided to move their billing to a bi-weekly cycle. By paying the monthly amount every two weeks, corporate makes an extra payment every year. Paying bills bi-weekly instead of monthly involves making payments every two weeks. This means you'll make 26 payments per year rather than 12 monthly payments. Note: There are 52 weeks per year = 26 biweekly periods equals 13 payments. No matter which way to look at it, I am being duped by the 13th payment. Members, check your records and compare, every situation is different within your own personal billing matter. Owner, If you wanted to raise the monthly rate, just do it and be transparent and not try to sneak in through the back door like a thief in the night just to make a couple of bucks from members that are not under a medical insurance plan who pay outright. The worst gym I have ever been a member of, with dirty bathrooms and smells like mold everywhere. When I went to cancel the membership after not attending for over a year was forced to pay over $330 and late fees, with additional month of membership fees. I saw no need to look at other gyms, because this one fit all my needs. I was warmly greeted by Demetrius and introduced to his father and trainer, Ricky Moore on my first day. I contracted with Mr. Moore to be my trainer and have not regretted it. So far, I've lost 19 pounds and getting stronger every day. Mr. Moore pushes me more than I would push myself, but yet he instinctively knows when to back off. I would highly recommend this gym to any serious person who wants to get fit. I've also enjoyed meeting other members and have developed great friendships. A friendly place to work out and develop a fit lifestyle. read more

I was called after my membership was was done for the year (the contract I signed) Not once when I was on the phone with the front desk individual to communicate that I did not want to renew my membership and if there was anything I needed to do and that individual said no. Not once did that individual mention that it would auto-renew and I would have to come to cancel. I am still being charged. I called today and the front desk person was rude and dismissive. I was told to I have to come in the following business day to speak with the manager... which he will probably try to charge me and looking at the other reviews. he is hardly there and is rude. When I joined AFC, I had to sign a 12-month contract. If I wanted to cancel my membership within those 12 months, I would have to pay some fee of a few hundred. Ok, an agreement like this is pretty standard. No big deal. Halfway through my 11th month, I decide to leave and speak with one of the staff. We agreed that I will complete the remaining two weeks so I don't owe the fee, and then my membership would terminate at the 12 month point. Great, that's ideal. I even have a written email confirming this. A couple months after leaving, I start receiving calls from AFC. They want their early cancellation fee. I explain to them multiple times what happened but they don't drop it. I don't pay. It was then sent to a collection agency who sent me frequent letters and calls. I'm unhappy with their handling of this situation which borders on harassment. I've found a nice gym elsewhere and won't be returning. read more

I was a member at this club for 3 years on a monthly membership. When I tried canceling, they made it exceptionally difficult. There is no way to do it online, and they have a policy against doing it over the phone, so you have to come in personally and HOPE that the person who manages memberships will be there. After multiple attempts and several calls, I was finally able to get the right person, but once they processed my cancelation, they will still charged me for the next month anyway, since they have a 30-day cancelation policy, which essentially means you have to cancel 2 months prior even when you have a month-to-month agreement. Today was an eye opening experience. When we signed our contracts, we asked Joe if my husband could freeze his account for when he was unable to get to the gym. He told us both that he wouldn't be charged for freezing his account. Fast forward to now, my husband's credit card bill was hit with two $15 "freezing fees". I went to the gym and asked about this and they were like "that is the normal fee for freezing an account." In the contract it says that there "may be a fee". Is there a fee or isn't there a fee? The manager was like "you signed the contract" this is a shady way of dealing with customers. The instructors are awesome and so are the trainers. Had a horrible experience. Tried cancelling my membership and they would not allow me to cancel and wanted me to keep paying for 9 additional months (total of $360, PLUS two $40 fees for who knows what) even though I had proof I was moving. Went in to the center multiple times and tried contacting multiple times a day via phone for WEEKS and they always said the person I needed to talk to in order to cancel my membership was not in, even though I would call at the specific days and times that they said they would be in. Not to mention that in my contract I was only obligated to give a 1 month notice for cancellation, which I did. Definitely will be advising people not to get a membership here. read more

I visited AFC with a 30 day free trial I saw on their sign and web site. I do agree with others that it is a bit run down but it seemed fine for me. I was only interested in swimming for the summer. Which I stated to Brandy at the time she showed me around. I felt the pool was extremely dirty. I did speak quietly with Brandy about this and she did say she would look in to it. I decided not to join. I was immediately told that i did not get the free trial only 30 free days. I stated my disappointment and was told to call Casey, email Casey and if Casey didn't get back to me to call her back. As much as I thought I should not have to be the one to track anyone down I did anyway. It's been 3 weeks and not a word, email or anything. I do not do business with companies that are not good on their word. Hopefully this will be addressed so I do not have to take any legal actions. read more

I like this place. I've found it to be clean. The pool is clean and kept at temp that is refreshing but not cold. A lot of equipment for cardio. A wide age range and body types. There's a physical therapy place as part of the facility and that's convenient. The staff is young and nice although it's clear they'd rather be anywhere else, but that's just an observation. I personally son't like perky and what else do you do while rowing except people watch? I had no problem understanding the pricing. Cancellation does seem cumbersome but try unsubscribing or opting out of stuff online. If you're older, it's a comfortable place to be although there are lots of young people there as well. Lots of classes and courts. I hated going to NAC. This place is more reasonably priced, has a nice pool area with hot tub and a warmer pool mostly for aqua-aerobics as well as regular pool. If you like swimming after 4, be aware there is swim team activity Mon-Thurs. Annoying but probably helps keep price down. If you want a a lot of options and don't want to go to NAC, this is a good place. read more

Front desk staff would benefit from customer service training as they can seem irritated at times. My husband & I joined here a month ago. I was sold by the pool plus classes that are included and he was in love with the cardio equipment. They have upgraded their locker rooms , super nice. Spa like. My only gripe is the hours the gym is open & the parking lot. I wish it opened a bit earlier than 530am. But I work odd hours. The parking lot gets packed and it's tight. The members actually clean off equipment when they're finished unlike my last gym. Everyone does their own thing and seems pleasant enough. So far , so good. read more

Got the runaround and was asked several times "when would be a good time for you and your family to stop in?" Well I have no idea the cost and three kids from 7 to 1 so um there really isn't a good time. I meet with a sales rep, not the same gentleman I spoke with prior, and let him know I was looking for a membership. He walks me around pointing out the daycare, pool, basketball court, nutrition, gym...you get the point. I am sold. It's a nice quiet afternoon not like the gym down the street that had a wait for machines. Now onto the pricing. I get all kinds of numbers thrown around. Paid in full, you only, you and family, initiation fee, card fees, annual fee,etc. I ask the salesman to email me the prices we went over and I will be in touch by the end of the week. I got nothing and good thing because I happened to receive an email for FREE 30 day membership. They had my email address because as I mentioned earlier I was trying to get online pricing and figured if I entered my contact info I could get a price online. Anyway I think to myself "sweet!!" I can try the gym for 30 days before I actually buy it. Maybe the quiet afternoon I experienced was a fluke. So I click the link, submit my information and wait. I receive a system generated email stating and I quote "Thank you for contacting AFC Fitness! Congratulations on taking the first step towards a healthier tomorrow. An AFC customer service rep will be contacting you to schedule your first workout. In the meantime, please download our "AFC Fitness App" for your Iphone or Android for more information about AFC. Send the following link to a friend and receive an additional free 30 days if they join." I am on my way to trying out the gym AND I can even get 60 days if I refer a friend. This is awesome or so I thought. I receive a call from another sales rep and he wants to know a good time to come in. See above, there's never a good time. I explained I came in earlier this week for the tour and I am ready for my FREE 30 day trial. Well it's not a trial, it's one month free with the purchase of a membership. Oh and their memberships are 12 month unless you move X number of miles away from one of their locations. Nowhere does it state the 30 days are free with the purchase of a membership. I joined this gym as part of my therapy for back surgery. I was not told that they "rent their facilities to youth organizations " and I have had 3 instances of non-communication of scheduling AND when I showed up to meet with the trainer they assigned to me I was advised he was no longer there! No one called to advise or reschedule my appointment! I met with the GM Casey who was unprofessional and showed an angry attitude and seemed like he could care less. He offered no apology or reason then stated he couldn't give me a receipt or confirmation of my cancellation and that all he could do is print the screen! I have escalated my complaint to BBB and the State Attorneys....this is a shady operation and they do not disclose information to you when you sign up. I had to request a copy of the contract twice! Facilities are down in the mouth but I joined for the pool. They overcharged us $50 a month for several months and wouldn't refund the difference. I asked them about the overcharge for one month and they said it was an admin fee. Then another person said an overcharge in a second month was an "admin fee" too. The jacuzzi is not really up to par and I have been having doubts about the facilities (roof leaks in the track room and we almost slipped walking a few times) but this is really upsetting. read more

Putting in lousy instructors that are personal friends, terrible new Pilates teacher that does shoulder rolls for 4 minutes. What that has to do with core is beyond me. Definitely one of the better Fitness locations around the area. I have been a member along with my son since 2001. The environment is sanitary and very relaxed, with indoor pool, bball court, spa, two saunas, treadmills, various free weights, great parking and a recently renovated locker room. This review is not for this location but for the northeast Philly location. They're the same crap. Besides the day that I signed up for this gym with my mother, I have never stepped foot in there. I signed up with her only because she needs assistance and I wanted to be there with her. Well, her feet are deformed and shortly after we signed up they began to swell up and she can't use the gym. her condition worsens everyday. She can't even walk let alone run or swim. She never made it in not one time. They have charged us full price for months and had the nerve to charge us a January administration fee as well. As if they haven't ripped us off enough. I called in and the lady on the phone told me to come in so we can sign the paperwork and pay the remaining balance/ cancellation fee. Why on earth do I need to pay more money when I have never and will never use your facility?! They need to change these policies because things happen, people get sick, change their minds and financial hardships are real. BEWARE if you're thinking about joining this gym. When you sign those papers and they give you a little card for your keys, they are written In stone and you will lose hundreds of dollars even if you don't ever use their services their classes or pool or anything.
