I'm currently on the road for several months and wasn't able to return home to my dentist, so I was simply looking to get some maintenance and handle a small filling while traveling. However, I was required to proceed with a full deep cleaning plan or cancel the appointment, and couldn't move forward with a routine cleaning or separate treatment. Not a complaint--just helpful to know they follow an all-or-nothing approach, so it's best to clarify flexibility in advance.

I explained to the front desk staff, the dental assistant and Dr. Barrington time and time again that my dental insurance expired the end of March 2025. Repeatedly I was told they could accomplish everything needed in that 10 week period. My insurance had sent my preauthorizations and we were on the way. When I completed my appointment on March 20th the front desk clerk said I could not get back in until mid April. Again i explained my insurance would end in 10 days. To no avail was she helpful. I was so upset I went home and calmed down and then called the office and unfortunately got the same receptionist asked if I might be able to speak with Dr Barrington at this convenience. She said no he was with patience and said assumed i was calling because kg the future appointment. She said she would speak with the dentist as well as the office manager and i would receive a call back. Of course that call his never happened. I don't know if she threw away my message and Dr.Barrington never got it or that he did and simply didn't care. Either way I still need a filling and a night guard. This practice in Frankfort Ky made promises they couldn't keep. They put on the friendly small town smiles and collect their money and then the patient is forgotten. If you are looking for a long term dental practice that cares about your dental health this is not the practice to visit. You will be a number not a patient. M Wells

Pros include: To start with they do a complete standing scan that encompasses so much more than x-rays ever could (jaw, behind back molars, space above roots, etc.). This is followed by a complete in-office set of digital x-rays. They also look at your medical history and ask questions that are appropriate. They follow safe treatment protocol in requesting the patient wear safety glasses when being treated. Unlike other dentists I've been to since moving to Kentucky they also take precautions during dental work that include isolating a tooth during treatment by inserting it through a rubber sheet. The hygienists primarily use a water pick to clean your teeth. No more having gums sliced by the oops of a metal instrument. You say you can't afford dental work. At this office you can. They take most major dental insurances but additionally they offer their own insurance. Their insurance kicks in immediately upon purchasing it so it covers even a procedure you need immediately. Since this office has a group of dentists they work a patient in if an emergency arises. It may not be the dentist you see on a regular basis but all the dentists are good. The cons: They are busy, so if you schedule your hygiene appointment in six months you better put it on your calendar and keep it or you may have to wait for someone else to cancel.

It's not a bad dentist, but we've had to conclude it's just not the place for us anymore, and it's not the office we used to love. Dr. Herman is a bit curmudgeonly. However, he's gradually gone from charmingly curmudgeonly in that grandfatherly sort of way, to gruff and off-putting, like a bitter old man. The last straw was when my wife had trouble booking an appointment for dental work, because they kept losing her appointments. She'd book an appointment, come in on that date, and be told they didn't have a record of the appointment and she'd have to reschedule. After this happened twice, she got the hint that maybe we were being "fired" as patients. Either they were trying to tell us we weren't welcome anymore, or were too inept to keep our business. We realized that we'd stayed with Dr. Herman for years out of a sense of loyalty and out of habit, but objectively speaking, it was nowhere near as good a dental office as it was almost a decade ago when we started using it.
