This is a hidden gem in Gainesville. I stopped here while on my way to Shenandoah National Park. I was greeted with a warm welcome and placed my order. What is great is that you can pick wherever you would like to sit. The ambiance is relaxed. Once your order is ready, you walk to the front to pick it up. We were visiting the Gainesville area for the first time and looking for a good local spot to grab a meal. We came across Afghan Famous Kabob Restaurant on Yelp and decided to check it out based on the positive reviews. Unfortunately, our experience was extremely disappointing and uncomfortable. As soon as we walked in, we witnessed the owner, an older gentleman, having a very loud and heated conversation in Farsi with a woman who appeared to be an employee. It became clear that he was firing her on the spot. She was pleading with him, asking for just two weeks to find another job and explaining how much she needed to keep working. She even mentioned that she had worked there for eight years. What made it worse was that this was all happening right in front of customers. The owner barely acknowledged us, even when we walked in. He looked at us briefly, then went right back to scolding the employee. The entire scene was deeply unprofessional and made us feel extremely uncomfortable, especially because we could understand what was being said. We turned around and left immediately. As we walked out, we could still hear the owner blaming the poor woman for us leaving, as if it were her fault. This is absolutely not how you treat people, especially someone who has given years of their life to your business. No matter how good the food might be, we could not support a place that shows this level of disrespect and disregard toward its staff or its customers. read more

The prices on Yelp menu are inaccurate. I was very disappointed when I arrived to an almost $70 bill when I expected it to be between $30-40. The menu provided at the restaurant has an inactive website listed and a QR code that takes you to that same site. The food was just ok. Not worth what I paid for it. Such a hidden gem in Gainesville. Afghan Famous Kabob is absolutely the best spot for Middle Eastern food in NoVa. You can see their whole kitchen right at the register and every skewer of meat is grilled fresh right in front of you. The restaurant itself doesn't LOOK anything special, on the inside or outside, but the food is phenomenal. I've got a few tips before you go. The location has really shoddy cell service, so if you are expecting an important call don't come here. Secondly, they only have free hot water and tea, no cold water, so you have to bring your own water bottle or buy one there. The wait once you order can vary a lot, depending on how far done the meats are. Be prepared for 15 minutes, and be happy if you wait less. My go-to order is the Boneless Chicken Breast Kabob. For $15, it's the perfect meal - you get your choice of meat, a salad, a side of chickpeas, rice, and a whole piece of naan. You can also get a yogurt-based white sauce or a mint-based green sauce. I always make sure to get extra green sauce, it's a spicy mint chutney that goes great with the naan. The meat is extremely flavorful, so much so that I sometimes feel bad dipping it in the sauce. The salad, chickpeas, and rice are what you'd expect. The naan is the right mix of fluffy and firm that is difficult for a lot of places to get right. It's rare these days to get a full meal for only $15, but Afghan Famous Kabob delivers. Don't let the sketchy shopping center put you off, it is definitely worth going to. read more

Exploring Gainesville isn't that exciting but the food at this little restaurant was! Starving per usual, I decided to stop by this place, the owner is so nice and suggested the combo. Wasn't the most expensive thing on the menu, which a lot of restaurants and servers will try to do. He was chatting up with me about different types of middle eastern food since I love me self a good everything! It took about 10 minutes, but it was worth the wait. The meat selection: chicken and lamb; amazing. Lamb was a bit tough, but the chick peas and the green sauce did the trick. You also get a long piece of naan which who doesn't like carbs right? Platters also come with a small helping of salad, a cup of tender chickpea curry, and a generous scoop of rice (specify the more flavorful and traditional brown rice option). Additionally, the green yogurt based sauce offers a spicy, fresh kick to the food here, so request it for your meal if you enjoy chilis. Prices here are fair for the quantity and quality. My fiancé and I were in the Gainesville area and we had this place bookmarked for awhile and finally had a chance to stop in. Big fan of chicken kabob and I wanted to try a different place. The choice this time was good in presentation and taste. I came to Afghan Kabob around 1pm in the afternoon, empty seating area not one customer but never less I wanted to give them a chance. The location is not a very appealing, dark lighting, dusty lightbulbs and dark faded out picture frames like they been out in the sun for too long. The bathroom is immaculate and left a good impression in me. The food was ok, took for ever to get more then 30 minutes but when we received it it was tasteful. The rice was flavorful, the chicken was hot not much flavor , salad was fresh and green. The best part of the good was the fresh, crisp bread. Nice and hot and shape like a stretch football. Sauce was limited but good. Overall good 3/5 stars, service 2/5 not a smile or small talk. Location 2/5 could use a lift in presentation. The Afghan music did not help felt so out of place. For carry out by default, the white dressing are everywhere e.g. soaked on gyro, salad, etc... messy and nasty. The white sauce/dressing by default need to be on the side in a small cup for dipping or pull on as needed. Very disappointed soaking white sauce/dressing over power many good dishes. During transport and carry out tipped/felt sideway, your food will look and taste disgusting of white sauce/dressing. I came here for a quick lunch stop on a Saturday and the place was fairly busy when I walked in. There's plenty of seating so you won't have to worry about fitting a group of 4 during peak hours. I ordered the #8 Deluxe platter which comes with Chicken, Lamb and Shami. It also has a side salad, chickpeas and naan. I loved their naan and the meat was still hot for my first few bites. The shami and lamb were my favorite because they were both well seasoned and tender! I recommend their #8 platter because it's a good sized portion and you can taste the three different types of skewers. The old location was in the Gainesville Village Square shopping center (located at the intersection of Gallagher Road, Linton Hall Road, and U.S. 29 - the shopping center was condemned and taken by the Commonwealth of Virginia for the massive road widening/improvement project in Gainesville). The new location is in the Gainesville Square retail complex off of U.S. 29 about a mile past the old location. As I walked in - I noted that the young lady standing at the register was standing there eating a banana - kind of strange. I ordered the Deluxe Kabob - Chicken, Lamb, and Shami Kabobs, with rice, chick peas, Salata, and bread with a side of a spicy mint, yogurt sauce, and a 12 oz. can of Caffeine Free Diet Coke. I asked how long it would be - she said 10 minutes. But instead it came up immediately - the manager came over to tell me that they had cooked two sets of the Deluxe Kabob when the last one was ordered a few minutes ago - so I got a hot meal immediately. Everything was so very tasty - nicely seasoned and pungent. The mint yogurt sauce was very spicy and delicious. All three meats were zesty. Try, and I cannot stress this enough, the bone in chicken wings. The spices are heavenly, the meat is tender and perfectly crisp, the spiced rice if you get it is incredible. Chicken is wildly seasoned-- nice flavour though, and no salt or additional spices needed to be added!! Plus it was very moist and juicy.. cooked just right!!! The meal was served with warm chick peas, cilantro yogurt sauce, bread, rice and a salad.The Beau got brown rice for some reason, which kind of tasted like a christmas tree... uh... But, the white (jasmine) rice I got with my meal was good, fragrant and flavourful. However, I like bigger portions of rice and because they give you a salad and chickpeas with the meal, I assume that's why the rice portion was small.
