We sat there for 12 minutes with no service and decided to get up and knock on doors around the restaurant to find anyone on staff. Eventually a server came out and she was happy to help us. A man walked in after us and the same thing happened to him, and after 10 minutes he started to wonder and then found a bell to ring. Once we had ordered, our food was quick to come out and had good flavor. The server was very attentive and asked if I had eaten fufu before wanting to help me enjoy it if I hadn't. Overall the food was good. The service was fine once we got someone to come out from the back, but for restaurant week there was no savings. It was $20 whether I did the meal alone or chose the same meal on the restaurant week menu.

The fries were crunchy, well seasoned, and the beef samosas WERE SO GOOD AND CRUNCHY AS WELL! I like that you can pay via QR code on the receipt because it makes it so much more convenient; this was my first time trying african food and i would 100% recommend!

Entering this cove of Caribbean meets Nigerian, I was pressed by the woman behind the counter. According to her, I would only get plantains. In response I mustered my best antagonist energy to match. Sure enough the menu opened up before me! Remember kids, it's press or get pressed... While she offered the last oxtail, I couldn't muster yet another slab of meat in KC that day. Instead, it'd be a mackable Rasta Pasta for this white boy. After a serving of P's and Q's, my dish arrived in kind. Lucky enough to dine alone I employed my best ravenous dog impersonation, breathing all of three times in the next ten minutes. It was as if world peace actualized, even for just a moment, in that bliss of now. Four big WAHGWANS from me!

It's tucked away in a bit of an unexpected location, but that's exactly where you find the best hidden gems. The restaurant was busy, which is always a great sign, and the staff behind the counter were fantastic--super warm and genuinely caring. You could just tell the food was going to be incredible. I ordered the fried plantains and the Nigerian chicken stew, which is a killer combo of Jamaican jerk chicken topped with a traditional stew, served with their special rice and cabbage. The chicken had just the right amount of kick and those incredibly deep, slow-cooked flavors. Truly one badass bird, and the sides held their own, too. Of course, I couldn't run away without trying dessert. I brought home a piece of raspberry lemon butter cake and a piece of chocolate butter cake. Even out of a to-go box later on, they were phenomenal. This place is warm, inviting, and serves up serious comfort food. Highly recommend going out of your way to give them a try!

We were tired, hungry, and still searching for a good meal when we noticed the place. We arrived only about 15-20 minutes before closing and fully expected to be told they were wrapping up and couldn't take any more orders. Instead, the owner welcomed us warmly and made us feel completely at ease. He explained that they cook everything fresh, so the wait might be a little longer especially since they were nearing closing time. We were more than happy to wait and genuinely grateful for the hospitality. We started with drinks while the kitchen prepared our meals. My friend ordered swallow with egusi and assorted meat, and I had ofada rice and sauce also with assorted meat. When the food arrived, it was outstanding and I can say it was easily one of the most delicious Nigerian meals I've had at an African restaurant all year. The flavors were rich, the portions generous, and everything tasted freshly prepared and carefully seasoned. Truly off the chain. The owner and his staff were consistently kind, attentive, and courteous throughout our visit. What could have been a rushed or disappointing end to the evening turned into a memorable and satisfying experience. If I'm ever back in Kansas City, My Village - Grill Restaurant will be one of my first stops. Highly recommend

They recently expanded to a second spot right next door and its vibes! If you're interested in trying real authentic African food for the first time....this is the spot! I love ALL their dishes. Although it may be a bit pricey and sometimes a bit overly spicy which they do a great job at accommodating for those who don't care much for spicy food. Today I ordered the meat pie and beef suya, it was a bit too crispy but nonetheless was delicious. I highly recommend you try this place out and meet the owner. Great food and Great vibes.

It is a great experience as I was wondering if I would like it and it turned out better than I expected. The server was very polite and asked us if we need help with the menu. He recommended the sampler combo which consists of different meats and veggies options. I am glad that we listened to him as one sampler combo was very filing for two men. It is kind of like Indian food so if you are not sure why to try, go with the sample combo. I also ordered the Ethiopian iced coffee which is like a light roast flavor iced coffee and easy to take in. I would recommend you to try out this restaurant if you want something different than bbq or pasta at the Kansas City Market!

This meal made me just plain sad. Coming from a city that has great Ethiopian food I was excited to…read morefind a restaurant like this here. But the food was really disappointing. Nearly every item in the veg combo and doro wat was under-seasoned and certainly missing the complexity of spices that makes Ethiopian food amazing. Seemed to be missing butter too. The lentils in both dishes were undercooked and chewy. The doro wat was heavy on salt but again no complexity at all. It tasted like it was missing multiple spices. And was definitely missing the boiled egg that's always part of the dish. The mitmita never made it into the bag. They asked if I wanted gluten free injera and I was confused-said I'd only had the normal one before. It wasn't until I unwrapped it that I realized they were offering that option because they don't use teff flour! Which is naturally gluten free. Injera without teff? Really? I've never heard of that. It makes for a heavy, heavy meal and lacks the unique nutty flavor of normal injera. After eating 10% of the meal I wanted a nap. And didn't want any more of the meal. I guess this is heavily Americanized Ethiopian food? Or the chef isn't really a cook? Whatever the logic, it's simply not that good. Such a pity. When Ethiopian is done right it's a truly wonderful cuisine. The food here is fine if bland. But bears too little resemblance to Ethiopian dishes you'd find in a larger city. I suspect if they cooked the food with the usual panoply of spices that goes in, people in KC would absolutely love it. But as it is, it's a poor, dumbed down representation of a complex and delicious cuisine.
