This is one of those little gems that deserves WAY more attention. African Dream Cuisine offers traditional West African flavors and recipes inspired by generations of culinary tradition, and you can absolutely taste the love and care that goes into the food. From the moment we ordered, we felt welcomed and taken care of. That kind of genuine hospitality makes the whole experience even better. For my meal, I ordered the braised chicken with yam fufu and egusi sauce and WOW. The chicken was incredibly flavorful and so tender, the kind of meat that practically falls apart. The egusi sauce was rich, savory, and packed with flavor, and the yam fufu was the perfect pairing. My husband ordered the chicken with Banso-seasoned potatoes, and those potatoes were TO DIE FOR. Seriously, so much flavor! I may or may not have stolen more than a few bites. And whatever you do... DO NOT SKIP THE SWEET PLANTAINS! They were cooked to perfection, golden, caramelized, sweet, and absolutely delicious. They were the perfect way to finish the meal. Another HUGE plus for me: they have great gluten-free and dairy-free options, so it was really easy for me to find something delicious that worked for me. And guess what? They cater too! This small restaurant in a food court sandwiched between others was a place I've been meaning to try, but I waited until I had another stop nearby. The indoor mini mall it's inside looks fairly new, with a nice upbeat atmosphere. I wasn't expecting to find authentic African food in Lenexa. African Dream features Nigerian specialties like fufu, and that also looked tempting, but one good meal was my objective. My server Ria was gracious and helpful. She helped me select a meal for takeout, and I had a 20-minute-plus drive to reach home, where I devoured this memorable meal (had at a reasonable price) in less time than it took to drive home. I had the brisket platter with sides (served in a takeout container). The brisket was, in a word, delicious! I'll be back for sure. The cabbage and rice dish sides were nice, too, and they complemented the brisket just fine. I'm glad that I arrived in time for the last small portion of their brisket. It looks like it usually sells out at lunch, but it's Monday and the entire food court wasn't busy. It was tender and smoky, with a light au jus style sauce. Yum. Parking was just okay on the street, and most spots were taken around my near-5 p.m. arrival, but I lucked into a parallel spot very close. I dream of eating at this place DAILY. I want to try everything on the menu, and then try them all again a second and third time. I believe the owner was present and helped plate my order! I kept it small with the potatoes and peanut sauce, but boy was my "small" order plenty! The owner was also very kind and helpful with the selections! The peanut sauce reminds me of a Filipino dish I grew up eating called Kare Kare. It has a creamy, yet light peanut sauce/flavor that you just cannot get enough of. If I could buy a bucket of their peanut sauce, I would and I'd eat it with everything! The potatoes were soft with the perfect bite, combined with the peanut sauce just simply divine. We stopped in to the food court. I had African Dream bookmarked. The people there were super sweet and kind. I got the chicken bowl. It had a nice grilled plantain on top. The chicken was excellent and tender. It didn't have a ton of flavor. The rice and cabbage side dish was super. They shared a hot sauce and peanut sauce that were very nice. Located in the Independence Mall and the food is so good ! The owner running the stand is wonderful and so mindful when it comes to her food. The egussi and fufu were delicious and hot when we received it! Also tried the brisket which was decent but not the best in my opinion. This location is in a mall that is very slow so please go show her some love and order something new! Having never had African cuisine I didn't know what to expect. The gentleman behind the counter was very friendly and explained what the dish contained. He offered us both dream sauce ( a red pepper sauce) and peanut sauce. The food was very filling. The chicken was stewed and I used both sauces to add flavor. First of all, I have met the owner when he first opened as a pop up and when he was in the first stall space - he is incredibly nice and when he runs his own business it is fast and great service. However, the last few times I have been it has been hired workers he has staffed that are incredibly slow with service and busy checking their phones and wearing AirPods while customers are trying to order. First, they handed me a door dash order (which was exactly what I ordered as well) had me hand it back after I had opened it and touched it and then wrapped it up for whoever it was for. They were very inconsistent with wearing gloves and food handling. Also very disappointed that they were microwaving all the food to heat it up before giving it to us. I was with others and they got their order wrong. Incredibly long wait for a place that had no one else in line, two workers, and food that was scoop and serve. Definitely will not be door dashing here and will only come back if it's the owner running the stall. read more

We decided to try out the African dream restaurant in the Lenexa marketplace since it had good reviews. Unfortunately, we were highly disappointed. I had their salmon with rice, a potato, and cabbage mix. My husband had their brisket skewers with the cabbage mix. He had a particular sauce that he does not remember what the name was and I had their peanut sauce. Upon walking up to the counter, I felt like the owner or the person taking our order was rushed, even though we were the only people ordering at the time. The salmon was overcooked with no good flavoring to it. The other foods were bland, and I was hoping the peanut sauce would help and it was extremely bland and oily. My husband said that the brisket skewers were tender, even though they were bland. He said that his sauce was completely bland with no flavor, and I tried it as well and could not detect any noticeable flavor. The cabbage was quite firm and somewhat difficult to chew. It was really just a disappointing lunch, especially for the price. The ambience is pretty much like the inside of a food court at the mall. read more

My first time eating here and trying Cameroonian food for the first time. This restaurant is located in Lenexa inside the public market. African Dream cuisine is BEYOND AMAZING! I got the chicken bowel with 3 sides with the peanut sauce and it's on sale at 10.99. It is an amazing value for the amount of food you get and it was very tasty. Aside from the flavors being SO ON POINT, the owner is just such a pleasant person. So kind and accommodating and made sure I knew what I was ordering and made suggestions based on what I told her I liked. That was so helpful because I'm definitely not an African cuisine expert. My suggested meal: chicken, lamb or goat with peanut butter sauce (extra sauce) and either rice or corn fufu. I met a friend for lunch and ordered the braised chicken, fried rice, sautéed cabbage, a buttered potato with bell pepper sauce, and peanut sauce. Surprisingly, the entire meal was delicious. Although I wouldn't say the chicken was braised, it had a good flavor that suggested it had been boiled in a good broth. The rice wasn't fried but steamed, and it was also delicious. SO flavorful~the chicken was smoky and delicious, the sauce was very complex, and the portion was plentiful. Ordered a side of the samosas and they were also fantastic. This is so good for no reason. The menu isn't large,, but what they offer is filling enough. The chicken and pork meats are consistently tender and carry a robust, distinct savory flavor, and the sides of rice and veggies always compliment the meats so well. It's set up to be a cafeteria style setting, so it's pretty nice to be able to fill up your plate with whatever (reasonable) servings you desire. I had the chicken peanut butter rice special and it was delicious. Not spicy at all. The shredded chicken and rice was covered by a lot of thin, peanut flavored sauce. I don't believe I've tried Cameroon food, before; Not sure if it is true of most Cameroon cuisine, or just the specific dish I had, but it was not spicy/hot at all if you are curious (differing from some Ethiopian dishes I'm more accustomed to). The chicken in the sauce was so tender it easily broke apart with my fork. The missing star is because I don't like portions that leave me super stuffed; would have happily ordered a half portion (even if 75% the cost of a full plate). I went in search of a pick up dinner at the Lenexa Market and found this little stand offering a make-your-own-mixed-plate for $13.99. The smell of smoked meat was instantly appealing! So glad I bought dinner here! I also noticed that as I was making my plate. a line of people who probably smelled that amazing smoked chicken and pork was forming behind me. The veggies were crisp tender and the rice pilaf flavorful with plenty of parsley. Food was not spicy, just full of delicious, full flavors. I'll be bringing friends next time!
