I've lived in Cincinnati for a long time and, believe it or not, I had never had Aglamesis Brothers ice cream until this weekend. The small storefront in Montgomery is filled with antique vibes. When you walk through the front door, you'll instantly feel as though you've stepped into a dollhouse. We went up to the counter but, to our surprise, we were told to have a seat and that there would be full table service. The service was fast and friendly. I ordered a Swiss raspberry sundae (chocolate ice cream with raspberry whipped cream). The sundae was delicious and the portion was pretty generous (It was enough lactose that i later came to regret eating the whole sundae). Don't ask me to compare it to Graeters, I won't. If you find yourself in Montgomery, definitely stop in and take in all the nostalgic goodness and if you're at all sensitive to lactose like me, maybe consider splitting a sundae to avoid the stomach ache! read more

When you walk into this ice cream parlor, it is like you are stepping back in time! Even the head manager wears a vintage pink uniform and hat. When I told the manager it was my first time here, she came over and talk to me about the history of the parlor. The shop in Montgomery is actually the satellite campus of their original store in Hyde Park. When you walk in, you can either get ice cream to go or have a seat inside the parlor. They will bring you a menu and some water if you decide to dine in. Considering the atmosphere, the delicious ice cream, and the assortment of choices--I did not mind paying five dollars for a sundae. For me, hands down, Aglamesis is the place to go for fine chocolates. While I'm not a big fan of their ice cream, my husband and I like to treat ourselves every now and then with our favorite chocolates from their candy counters or gift them to each other for holidays and birthdays. Aglamesis has a line of truffles, non parelis, chocolate-covered fruit, nuts, peanut butter, pretzels, creams and much more. We walked right in at around 8pm on a Friday night, and it was not crowded at all. We happily grabbed a couple tables in the back to try it indoors. I had what was probably the best chocolate malt I have EVER had. That's usually my litmus test for ice cream places, and they definitely passed. My oldest had a really good vanilla shake. Both the shake and the malt were served in a small glass along with the rest of it in the aluminum mixing canister. So good! We also had a couple waffle cones of chocolate chip ice cream, and this was good as well. My wife tried the "coffee" flavored iced coffee drink, and unfortunately this was the only thing that did not impress. It tasted like it did not have any ice cream in it, which was disappointing. It tasted a bit like watered down iced coffee. They have a good selection of flavors, and a number of seasonal flavors that sounded good as well - I want to try the peach Italian ice someday! They also have a candy counter that had some attractive looking candy, but we didn't need that after all the ice cream. We will definitely go back. This location is not very near us, but it will be good when we have some time to drive for dessert. Looking forward to trying a sundae next time. Our normal ice cream haunts have some competition now. read more

This little ice cream shop is adorable. Pink and white walls and staff with candy striped uniforms--this place is all nostalgia. The ice cream is creamy and sundaes are topped with handmade whipped cream and chopped walnuts. All the ice cream is served in old fashioned champagne style glasses or silver boats. Was curious why the sign says $2.60 a scoop and I was charged $3.25, which is the cost of a single scoop on a waffle cone, for a scoop in a cup when dining in. "You get a bigger scoop." It just seemed strange the original location in Oakley doesn't have that policy nor was it posted anywhere. I'm not complaining, just found it a little odd. The Oakley location is celebrating their 100th anniversary in August of 2013. I see you can get their ice cream at Blue Ash Chili and many local Kroger's too. I finally tried something different and the banana chip was very tasty. I like to let it sit in the cup just enough to let it soften up, as it seems to have more flavor, just don't cheat and taste any right away or you won't be able to wait for that second taste. This place has a cult-like following, and seems to have recruited some new members in my children. I say cult-like because one of the times we were here the power was out and the place was dark but people were still streaming into the place demanding ice cream! I am not an ice cream lover, but will try a bite or two. The brownie sundae seems to be the favorite of the family; had it on more than one occasion and it is consistently delicious. It is built as described: brownie with vanilla ice cream, home made whipped cream, nuts, hot fudge, and a cherry on top. I will say that it is MUCH better when they heat up the brownie, which I always ask for since they didn't do it once. I have tried a sampling of their candy, and I have to say I'm not impressed. Their chocolate is a little too waxy for me and the fillings are not so flavorful. They do have a rather large selection though and a very strong following for it so don't rule it out because I don't prefer it. Service can vary depending on how busy they are, but is usually pretty good. Last time they didn't have something I was looking for so the server gave me two free pieces of candy as a consolation. If it weren't for Graeter's, Cincinnatians might be calling Aglamesis Brothers the best ice cream in town. Aglamesis celebrated its 100th anniversary earlier this summer and has a long tradition of providing great "French" ice creams and gourmet chocolates to Cincinnatians and even to those outside of the city (they don't ship chocolates outside the city during the summer). They call themselves an ice cream "parlor," which is quite accurate considering how they have managed to maintain their old-fashioned look and style at the Montgomery location (and probably at the older Oakley store as well). It's tough, though, because everything about Aglamesis is compared to Graeter's (as you are seeing in this review). I'd probably give Aglamesis is five-star rating if it weren't four Graeter's, so instead I will resort to four. I still think their ice cream is really good, although I've tried only a few flavors. While Graeter's also offers delicious candy and chocolates, I'd probably consider buying the chocolate sweets from Aglamesis. I think of Graeter's as more of the go to place for ice cream, while Aglamesis may have the slight edge in the gourmet chocolate department. Overall, Aglamesis Brothers is a very good ice cream parlor and chocolatier. Although they have a few less year-round ice cream flavors than their rivals, they also offer seven flavors of Italian Ice, as well as friendly service and a fun in store atmosphere. read more

The Montgomery location of Aglamesis isn't as famous as the original 1913 Oakley store, but it was my first experience with their fine ice cream and has been a favorite of mine since the 1980s. I suppose everyone in Cincinnati knows and enjoys Graeter's Ice Cream, but there are two items, in particular, that I love most about Aglamesis frozen offerings: Their sorbets and their Chocolate Chip ice cream. The rich fruit flavor of their sorbets is superior to anything I find in stores or parlors and the intense vanilla flavor that combines with the dark chocolate chips makes that ice cream my first choice for any Aglamesis visit. The Montgomery store is lovely and old fashined. It's worth a visit for its atmosphere. The Oakley store, with its original old-world structure and interior, is even more fun to visit. read more

Every now and then, my husband is like, "let go get ice cream." And then we do just that. His go-to is orange leaf, but I was just not in the mood for that at all. So we did some googling and found Aglamesis Brothers, which I had remembered hearing good things about from a friend. So off we went! When we first arrived, it was very busy. There appeared to be a baseball team either just getting seated, or clearing out. Not sure, but we saw a sign that said to find a seat, so we did. We found this rather confusing, but it made sense shortly after when a waitress stopped by to welcome us, bring menus and deliver water. She gave us a few minutes to decide, and it was tough cause there were a ton of options. When she came back, we each ordered different kinds of souped-up sundaes.. although I really don't remember their names. We kind of felt like the service was a little slow, especially for their being three different guys behind the counter, plus the waitress. It wasn't so slow that I became impatient or angry, but with the being seated, waiting for menus, waiting for the waitress to come back to take our order, and then waiting for our order... it took a lot longer than our usual ice cream runs take. When the ice did arrive, it was very good and I enjoyed it. Only complaint was the size of the dish they put my dessert in. With all the fudge and syrups in the sundae, the ice cream was pretty melty (which I LOVED), but every time I went to dip my spin in for some ice cream, literally the whole dish overflowed. I made a horrible mess and spilled quite a bit of my ice cream. All in all, I liked this place. It's a nice change from the exploding froyo trend, and I enjoy the ice cream parlor atmosphere. While visiting some friends in Cincinatti, I decided to stop at a neighborhood ice cream landmark, Aglamesis Brothers. In late 19th century, the first of the Aglamesis brothers immigrated from Greece. His brothers soon joined him and in 1908, the brothers made enough money to open their own ice cream parlor. In 1913, they purchased their second shop (which remains open today). Over the years, the business has remained in family hands and is now operated by a third generation Aglamesis. In addition to specializing in French-style ice cream you can also purchase an array of homemade chocolates. The business has a national reputation and has been recognized in The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, Bon Appetit, and Chocolatier magazines. As you walk into the store, you can tell that the store hasn't changed much from the original parlor that was opened in 1913. Pink walls house a long ice cream bar and small tables where you can enjoy your ice cream. The staff is polite and the ice cream is served in cute, silver ice cream dish. I noted above that the shop specializes in French-style (custard) ice creams. Yes, I prefer to make Philadelphia-style ice creams, but I do not discriminate when it comes in sampling and eating ice cream. I decided to order the Peach Ice Cream, claimed to be made with fresh peaches. Upon first bite, I noted an excellent texture. Although the ice cream is made with eggs, it was not too heavy. The taste was a bit sweet for me. I felt that the peaches were over-powered by the sweetness and it gave the ice cream a peach-flavored taste instead of the taste of fresh peaches. Despite the sweetness, by the end of the dish I was satisfied and would have been happy to try another flavor...but I had to go to dinner. Alas, maybe next time. read more

Let me start by saying that I am not a Cincinnati native, so I do not have some odd nostalgic attachment to Graeters which has caused me to have a biased opinion. I will however compare the two simply because they are similar in almost every way. I want to love Aglamesis, I really do...but I don't. It's just okay. Graeters is creamier and more flavorful. There is nothing that Aglamesis offers that really sets them apart, but rather just makes them second best. Even if you have never eaten ice cream and someone asked you to describe what the flavor and sensation would be, this would be the de facto standard for that description. The place is straight 1960s Americana. The ice cream is just as it sounds: creamy, not heavy, light flavor, delicious and leaves you wanting more. I have been here twice now, only to the Montgomery location so far. I love their sundaes and they are simply amazing. I haven't had a fantastic old time banana split in a long time, and they had one of the best I have had. I have been to Graeters many times, but only found out about Aglamesis though doing a search on yelp. I love the old time ice cream parlor atmosphere and the staff were extremely nice and accommodating both times I have been there. If you go, you have to try one of their 3 or 4 Banana Split options, and if you like sharing they have a supersize one too. The first time I went I got the next to the largest banana split, the 2nd time, i got the two scoops of Ice cream and you pick your own toppings. I recommend the roasted coconut as a topping, as well as the normal trimmings.
