The little Kentucky towns across the river from downtown Cincinnati are really cool. The culture is totally different, with different architecture, different people, etc. Newport used to be the place to go drinking, but it appears to be gentrifying a lot, with artists' studios and cute boutiques springing up everywhere. The Sweet Tooth looked intriguing, so we parked and stopped by. Cincinnati is already known for Graeters' ice cream and candy, so any independent place had better be darn good to distinguish itself. The Sweet Tooth does the job quite well. From what I can gather, the specialties of the house are "Opera Creams" (that's Cincinnati-speak for vanilla creams covered in dark chocolate) and "French Nothing" creams (same thing as an opera cream only with chocolate cream instead of vanilla). We sampled one of each, and that was enough to get me to buy a half-pound box to take home. My husband got a small peach milkshake, and the ice cream was rich and buttery with a wonderful peach color and flavor. I have been driving by Sweet Tooth Candies often for about a year now and I've never stopped to check it out; it never stopped me from wondering if it was good though. I suppose the appearance and the location of the building never really drew me in, even though at a smidge over a mile from my house it's really convenient. For whatever reason, today I happened to notice a sign that said "Homemade Peach Ice Cream" and so I asked a native, who happened to live close by to this location for ~30 years, "is this place for real?", to which he gave a fairly emphatic "yes" reply to. For that reason, I decided to make my first trip to Sweet Tooth Candies today - I needed to quench my curiosity if nothing else. When you walk in, you can tell the staff is far more used to the "regulars" crowd. They have a more of a "what'll you have today, sweetie" type attitude than "welcome to Sweet Tooth, let me showcase our lovely product". For that reason, I tried to blend in and actually deferred to several other guests behind me in line as I perused the offering. I settled on Banana ice cream and Peach Ice Cream, both served up on a sugar cone. This may sound strange, but when I'm buying ice cream, I always like to see the product, which Sweet Tooth doesn't really openly do. I do this so I can gauge the quality of their ingredients. Even though I asked if all were homemade, and the staff member said "yes", I still like to see if the banana, for example, is a neon yellow color, or a more natural cream / creamy brownish color. Taking the blind leap, both cones came out and looked fantastic. Once I finally took a taste, I felt like I was in heaven. Sweet Tooth's ice cream was by far the best quality ice cream I have ever tasted. Having tasted a lot, you can tell they don't stop short on using a high butter fat cream (i.e. the ice cream was super creamy - creamier than any I have ever had), and I detected no "fluff texture" that you get from some places that pump in copious amounts of air to inflate the appearance of their product (that drives me batty). In addition, the fact that you can only get some of their ice creams a few months out of the year tell me they really go after quality and fresh ingredients to go in their ice cream. All-in-all, I came away super impressed with Sweet Tooth Candies. They have a new Super Fan with me. I try to stay away from ice cream as much as possible (for obvious reasons) but this place is so conveniently located near my house, and it's so damn good, I just can't stay away. I'm fairly certain that all their ice cream is homemade, but I don't even care because it tastes sooooo good. The prices aren't lower than any of your standard, run of the mill ice cream establishments, but they're very generous with their portions and will pretty much make whatever it is you want them to make. Recommendations: (1) Anything as a sundae (2) ICE BALLS! with ice cram ...My friend got a coconut/strawberry ice cream mixture and I swear to you, all you needed was a bit of rum added to the mix, and the heavens would have opened up. There are many things to love about Sweet Tooth Candies and Ice Cream in Newport. The first being (for me, anyway), it's all local--local folks working, neighborhood and local folks buying, and locally made confections and ice creams. I frequent Sweet Tooth about once a week--it's very close to my office, and I treat myself to a butterscotch sundae, cone or ice ball after lunch. The ice balls are incredible--if you've never had one, it's definitely interesting at first and I will be totally honest and say that I poo-poo'd the mere idea of a snow cone with ice cream in the middle...but I was SO wrong. And I don't admit that often. I usually get the strawberry ice ball with vanilla in the center. It's like summer in your mouth, but without the humidity because eventually, your mouth gets really cold from the ice ball! I also buy all the "candy holiday" treats here--Valentine's Day, Easter and in the fall, their caramel and candy apples are just wonderful! I even purchased 20 of the apples to take to a ladies gathering where people would be coming from all over the country, to "represent" my part of the country. They were cherished! My husband is totally miffed if his stocking doesn't include dark chocolate covered Oreo's, and my little girl likes to give those to him as "just because" gifts now and again. I've never had an unfriendly encounter with a staff member, nor have I been ignored (unlike the bored teenagers at any/all Graeter's locations). The Sweet tooth candy shop. Its so old fashion and quaint. Plus they have snow cones with Ice cream in the middle. It reminds me a lot of Schneider's candy in Bellevue. Even the decor is about identical. And like Schneider's it is equally as good. I stopped in and got an ice ball then tried a variety of candies. The truffles were delicious as were the caramels. I didn't care much for the nut roll but she warned me it was sugar free and I didn't listen. The ganache was thick and rich just like it should be. I do realize we are in the middle of a pandemic, however when I was in the store, with my husband and 2 young kids, I was standing next to my child who couldn't hear what I was asking. I pulled my mask down only long enough to ask her (again) what she wanted, and the cashier rudely asked me to pull it up. I was clearly 6 feet away from her, and no one else was even in the store at the time. She asked me again (very rudely) before I was finished ordering to pull it up over my nose. The opera creams are perfectly sized and coated with a dark chocolate that contrasts nicely with the sweet filling. The caramels are sensational, as is the fudge. However, the ice balls....oh the ice balls. This is not your generic sno cone you can get at the local generic place down the street, my friend, but something far more special. This is an intensely flavored syrup that coats every last piece of freshly shaved ice, and for a little extra, you can add some homemade vanilla ice cream to that and have yourself a lil foodgasm. I love this place! I've lived in Newport since 94, but didn't try Sweet Tooth until 2005. What a shame. It is delicious. I've been to all the local ice cream places in the Cincinnati area, but this one is my hands down favorite. There is usually free samples of candy, though I always seem to get a scoop of chocolate,chocolate chip. I drive past Sweet Tooth almost everyday and have wanted to try it. I thought the holiday season would be the perfect time to get some candy for myself and for everyone on my list. I walked into the store and did not feel very welcomed. The two women behind the counter were on their cell phones and acted it was a bother when I asked questions. I did make a purchase and the employees complained under their breath about boxing the candy. I'm regretting the purchase because of the service I received. I love caramel apples, and this is the time of year when you find them. I have purchased several of Sweet Tooth Candies' caramel apples with pecans at Remke Supermarket over the last few weeks. The caramel and pecans are wonderful, however they totally ruin the whole experience by using crappy apples....Why? That's probably the cheapest item in the whole receipe? This last one I bought today, was bruised all over, with black spots on it. Needless to say, I got a fresh, green, granny smith apple out of my produce drawer at home, took the caramel and pecans off their inferior apple and tried to make one good one. Not quite the same, but at least I could eat the apple. I don't understand why, when you have such a good product, you would totally ruin it by using soft, bruised, non-flavored apples? Why wouldn't you use a good firm Braeburn or Granny Smith? The apple is just as inmportant as the rest of the product. I have given them more than enough chances, and I won't be buying another one. At this point, I think I"ll just make my own. At 2.99 each, I should be getting what I paid for, a good, fresh product. They're only in Newport, and I'm in Florence, so it's not like there's any shipping involved here where the product can go bad. They're just using bad apples on purpose. read more
