Administration has a very hands-off approach to discipline and put the teachers in charge of handling it. Most of the administrators go through the same credentialing program, so they are indoctrinated into the beliefs the district wants to project. There is a lack of honesty and transparency with administrators to staff members. Students are not held accountable and the APs are ducklings that following the lead duck, but the lead duck has no idea what he is doing as he fell into the position due to some unfortunate circumstances. Sports (football) take precedence over education. It seems as though the district felt him to be qualified since he was the star of the football team when he was in high school. The APs spend more time on the golf cart riding around the parkings lots and sidewalks than they do working. The academics are lack luster and no one talks about state standards or how to help students achieve them. There is very little training or support for new teachers. The district mostly hires their own graduates back (or people that went to Calabasas), so new ideas are scarce. This is a very nepotistic district. This district rides on the laurels of being affluent and having opportunities provided from the student's parents. It's not the worst of the districts, but it could be far better. read more

Every year, my student take six classes and every year without fail they only have one acceptable teacher. Non of these teachers are teaching! The reason that students still score well is that we live in an affluent community where every family invests thousands of dollars in tutoring. read more

When I attended my senior year I volunteered to be a teachers aid. They assigned me to the janitor and asked me to clean lunch tables. All the other kids assumed I was in trouble, which was embarrassing because I was quite shy and never caused problems. The teachers would give lectures on off topic stuff like teacher pay. I heard the teachers pay lecture so many times I was sick of it. I'm like if you hate your job so much go get a real job! Not one teacher or administrator congratulated me on graduation. read more

I have a deep love for and relationship with Agoura High School. And oddly enough, I never attended the school. Yet, I've ventured often on campus, my boyfriend attended, several friends have attended, my favorite band, etc. Sitting on a sprawled campus in the Old Agoura neighborhood on the Calabasas border; Agoura High school has several buildings, outdoor courtyards, a pool, baseball/football fields, and handicapped facilities nestled amongst charming, green mountains/hills. Best known for its music program and several famous rock band graduates (members of Hoobastank, Incubus, and Linkin Park to name a few); Agoura High students enter to learn and go forth to serve. Academically, students score in the top 6% of all California schools on the SAT/ACT tests; proving the teaching methods and passion of the staff. Recently, Agoura High has expanded and added new buildings and lockers, constantly meeting the needs of the growing student body. A terrific school both academically and within the arts. A wonderful public school aiming high and readying students for the "real world". read more

When they make you do push ups in front of the whole class when you're 30 seconds late after the bell because your passing period is too short, take it as a red flag. I attended from August 2008 to June 2012 and hated very second of it. I attended the football games with my dad while I was at the middle school but never when I got to the high school I didn't see the point in showing school spirit for a school that showed school pride the wrong way and for a school that has FCA as a school club I almost expected better from them. My uncle claimed it was a good school just because my cousins had a cousin on my aunt's side of the family who went there the same time I did. Not an ideal situation if you didn't grow up in the area, which I did not. Very prejudiced towards LAUSD which the number one reason I hate the school with a passion to this very day. I can respect that if it's just an opinion but the way they talk about it makes it sound like fact, even though I know for a fact, they're liars. They disrespected my family with their comments. My uncle and cousin lived in Northeast LA, with my late paternal grandmother, and my other uncle was an LA Unified employee at the time. Some of the faculty are alumni of LA Unified high schools themselves, so I don't know nor understand why they would be prejudice towards LAUSD in the first place. What ever happened to the type of parents who used to tell their kids more often, "If you have nothing to say they don't anything at all." I had an incident one day at lunchtime during my freshman year where one of the other freshmen who was a classmate of mine during my only year at Lindero Canyon Middle School told one of the sophomores in the community based instruction class that I had a crush on one of the other freshmen who I met when we were at the middle school and then she proceeded to troll me about my feelings for her. Comments were made by some of the staff who were there that day to leave me alone. Sadly that classmate, Sage Guilis was her name, has since passed away. We did sign each others yearbooks at our graduation rehearsal so that was good. I commend a parent's one star review from back in January and would I have to agree with this mom. Some of the teachers don't care about students especially not the ones like me who moved back into the area after living somewhere else for a long time. My brothers gym teacher made a comment that one of his students was getting homesick during class two of his classmates picked on him, and when they were confronted my teacher made a comment, "How they like if one of them were and someone picked on them over it?" Almost made me want to lash out at them. As for the academics I would say they're average at best but I saw from some research I did it seems LA Unified is a better school district academically than Las Virgenes. To all of the LA Unified parents who say they don't want their kids LA Unified I beg of you, please stick it out because the end you'll be better off. STOP making the safety argument all the time please. When my father moved us back here from L.A. in August of 2007 it was not over him feeling like he, or my mother or me and my brother weren't safe living in Los Angeles with my uncle and grandma. While I liked some things there weren't very much, I did like that the instructional assistant who worked in my history teachers room my freshman year had a grand baby who I saw pictures of and asked about she was so cute. Small bullying problems that are never addressed too and some parents may be blind to the situation like my dad was. Not as good as advertised in my opinion. I will make sure me and my wife 100% do not send our kids here. We will most likely be sending them to Crenshaw High School instead. It's probably a far better school than this one. I also for a time wanted to only go here for 9th and 10th grade and then do 11th and 12th and culminate from Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village. Maybe I should have stuck to that plan. read more

The school is terrible. We met only two teachers who don't hate kids during my son's two semesters at this school. The staff is exceptionally unfriendly and unhelpful. The principle was so rude I almost started to cry. My son is a top athlete with a good gpa, I can't imagine what they do to problematic kids. Our two close friends withdrew their kids from Agoura due to multiple problems with staff and counseling. My son's counselor provided us with the erroneous information! Calabasas High and Chaminade College Prep are much much better schools. read more

Um, wow. The previous review seemed an oddly exuberant ode, especially from someone who never went there, and much more importantly, doesn't AT ALL reflect what it's really like to spend four formative years there. The vast majority of teachers I had "taught to the test," without encouraging much by way of independent or creative learning. Most hadn't overhauled, modified or even tweaked their curricula in years. (One history teacher read monotonously from a thick pile of yellowed paper, for an entire godforsaken year.) I would say a substantial majority had serious cases of burnout. I can honestly say I only had one teacher who conveyed a genuine enthusiasm for the material. It was clear that many faculty and staff didn't actually like us kids very much either. Yes, numerous limits need to be set for teenagers. However, many of us were good, smart, well-raised young people trying to figure ourselves out, and it would have been nice if adults there were actually interested in us as people, or attempted to mentor us in some way. But no. This alumna, at least, wouldn't find that till college. Socially, the environment was downright toxic since I wasn't wealthy, gorgeous and/or a cheerleader. Bookworms, goths, potheads, fat or ugly kids, music and theater geeks: all are doomed at this painfully homogenous school. I can't overstate how central the tyranny of LA wealth and beauty is in this area, a prosperous bedroom community filled with industry people (not to mention tanning salons). If I found it awful as just a socially average sort of person (not inept, just did my own thing), I can't even imagine how dreadful it must be there for someone really troubled or without resources at home. Apparently there are more clubs and such since I graduated eight years ago, which is good. But frankly, AHS will always bring a bad taste to my mouth. It wasn't until college that I found any sort of opportunity to learn independently, or other people -- classmates and professors -- who spoke my language. I still look back on my time there as a highly unpleasant experience and I suspect I always will. read more

It's not too bad, basically just stay out of administrations way, do your homework, and don't piss off the yard aids and you should be mostly fine. My parents and I have had a lot of problems with administration screwing up me and my sisters schedules. This usually happens yearly and gets fixed within the first week. Still a pain in the ass however. Not a bad high school, if you look hard enough it's not that difficult to find a group of people you don't hate. read more

People often wonder why I came here for just two days at the beginning of my freshman year and then dropped out. I was part of the enormous group of WH/Calabasas kids who didn't want to go to Calabasas in fear of the emphasis on materialism and social role. Agoura was my only other option, so I went there...only to drop out. Why though? My fears about Calabasas were wrong. It's Agoura that is too concerned with money, where you are in society, and how much you add to the school's weakening reputation. Speaking of which, Agoura needs to take another look at how it handles and values students. The three suicides by AHS students are obviously related to the horrific student/teacher environment at the school. Just spend a few days at this school and you'll realize how depressing everything is -- from the campus to the students to the teachers themselves. read more

Dear all readers: I am writing this as a parent who desperately wanted to trust that the LVUSD school system was what everyone promised it would be - a gold star district. We have been incredibly disappointed. Our daughter is currently a Freshman at Agoura High and it has been a terrible semester for all of us. I want to say that out child has been an Honor's student-athlete for years and she is struggling to stay afloat due to the poor practices in place at AHS. Sadly, the teachers are jaded, angry human beings who seem to be taking their frustrations with school politics out on the kids attending their school. There is no sympathy whatsoever for student athletes - rather they are punished for missing class to attend sporting events. Moreover, there is a pervasive philosophy of teaching to the state tests rather than teaching to learn. There is an absence of creativity and striving for independent thought in the students and some teachers are simply vested in failing students. Direct quote: "Kids need to learn that life is hard, that lesson starts in my class." This was said to our faces as parents of a student on back to school night. WOW! Find a different job and please stop taking out your frustrations on the students who are attending their local public school. We have been trying to schedule meetings with the teachers and the principal with no success - they either refuse to call back or simply state, my favorite line, "there is nothing I can do, my hands are tied." If that is the principal's interest imagine the rest of the staff. If I had to do it all over again I would either apply to a private school (which we are currently doing) or apply for a permit to a school like Oak Park. read more
