Guy takes his job too seriously and that just leaves a bad taste in your mouth when its unnecessary. Of course the Pro defended him, makes no sense to do that, our group is paying good money and not holding anyone up, just stupid. Here is my top-5 list of reasons why Aguila Golf Course gets a 5 star rating from me:…read more1. It is beautifully laid out. I did a little internet research and found that it was designed by a guy named Gary Panks (who passed away in 2024). Panks has a ton of impressive courses on his resume (one of them is at the Wild Horse Casino and I loved playing there, earlier this year). Full disclosure: I'm not sophisticated enough to know the difference between a well designed course and a bad one, but I sure did like this place. It was challenging. Pars did not come easy--*and I was hitting and putting the ball pretty well that day. (I ended the round with 5 pars--and just-missed 4 others. ) Aguila's course lay out was also forgiving when my slice occasionally decided to show up. Twice, I was able to return my ball to play from adjoining fairways and resume a legit hunt for a par despite a "crap!" drive. Basically, the course does not destroy one's confidence, but it will expect you to make good contact with the ball... and you also better be making intelligent choices when it comes to course management. (Water hazards, sand bunkers, undulations on the course, and trees along the way could make things tricky). 2. It is exceptionally well-cared-for. The place was immaculate--not a speck of trash or tree debris to be found. Putting surfaces were smooth and putts rolled true. Tee boxes were lush and well groomed. Apparently, surrounding trees have recently been trimmed, so it felt like I had stepped into a post card. The one trade-off regarding the spotlessness of the grounds is that the maintenance crews were working on numerous holes. I am not distracted by the noise, and hustle and bustle of these crews, but others might want to know that workers will be probably be out there "doing their thang." 3. Pro-shop staff, the snack bar crew, the starter, maintenance workers, and the cart lady were absolute gems. Every staff member that I interacted with definitely gave off a vibe of sincere friendliness, had a level of professionalism that was top-notch, and made the choice to share a dash of caring energy with me. One specific thing that stands out in the area of customer service shared with me by Aguila staff had to do with the fact that I, "Eff-upped" and booked a tee time for Wednesday--but showed up, ready to play, on Thursday. The woman in the pro-shop worked some, "computer magic" and was able to honor the Wednesday booking. (She playfully let me know that I was pretty lucky that she actually could do it-- and I know it! But what a nice touch it was on her part to show empathy for the goof-ball who should have had to pay for another tee time.) 4. GPS guidance in carts. Come'on now! This is a public course! It seriously is as nice as some of the semi-private and upscale places that I have played. (Not that my golf-course body-count is that impressive--but I have played at a few places that were exceptional. Aguila is up there with them.) As if that isn't enough, the practice areas here are amazing, the bathrooms are spotless, the views of the desert are beautiful. 5. Fairways were lush. Yeah, I know this is related to my #2 reason, but as I am now starting to get the fever for playing golf, I am finding that well maintained fairways with the "Goldielocks-zone level of grass (not too high and not too scalped) make play so much more enjoyable. As I struck balls on these links it was almost as if angels began to sing. The course record was never in jeopardy, but I did play at near my best game levels. This place was so much fun, and will be remembered as one of my best-ever experiences in my golf journey, so far. I'm not the boss of you, but you definitely should put Aguila on your bucket list as a place to check out. I can't wait to play here again!

This place is so conveniently located that it instantly turns any business trip or quick getaway into a golf adventure. If I ever retire to Phoenix, I'd be hunting for a house right around here in a heartbeat. Most folks picture Arizona golf as nothing but cacti, sand, and rocks baking in the sun. Not here! Raven is an absolute oasis with thousands of mature pine trees lining the fairways, lush rolling greens, strategic bunkers, and stunning views of South Mountain and the valley beyond. It's like a lush Northern Arizona vibe dropped right into the desert beautifully manicured and way more forgiving (and fun) than the typical target-style desert courses. This was our very first stop on a multi-course golf binge, suggested by a friend, and it completely set the tone. Everything only gets better from here, but Raven was the ideal starter: challenging yet playable for all levels, with that championship Gary Panks/David Graham design that keeps you thinking on every shot. The staff was super accommodating and friendly from the moment we arrived. The food? Mouth-watering definitely grab the burger (you won't regret it). Drinks were cold, the vibe relaxed, and the whole experience made it feel like we were kicking off something special. Nothing beats golf in Arizona when the conditions are this good. Raven was the perfect warm-up round, and now I'm hooked scan't wait to hit the rest of the courses on our list! Highly recommend making Raven your first (or only) stop in Phoenix. I wasn't sure what to expect? I have heard a lot of bad things about this place. First, they are currently in a temporary club house, until they build a new one. The course itself is in decent shape, you can tell they are working on it. The employees were very nice, and are trying to give us a good experience. I did point out a problem to them. There are no marshal's on the course. There was a foursome who played like there was none else on the course. It really made the round longer then it should. I was surprisingly surprised how well and fast the greens were. The fairways are OK, you will find some bare areas. The current price is very reasonable at this time of year. Overall it was a good time, just stay on top of the groups that are holding everyone else back.

Full disclosure - I had swung a golf club maybe 2 times in my life before taking lessons. I am SO glad that I took lessons with Jim. He is very knowledgeable about the sport, but takes time to really understand you and works with you in the best method it takes for you to learn. You constantly see him writing notes and taking videos of your lessons (he also shares the videos with you after - self reflection and analysis is important!) and his feedback always makes me improve and feel better about my golf game. He truly caters the lesson to your needs and your abilities. He took time to really explain everything to me and answer all my (probably silly) questions and never made me feel dumb about not knowing golf terms or rules. He is very active and involved during the lesson which I appreciate so much. Definitely recommend Jim and taking lessons with him!!

Jim simplifies the approach and spends time on basics while leaving other fixes for later down the road. This removes the stress of trying to fix 10 things at once and gives you one swing thought to think about at a time. Jim also spends time on HOW to practice which is something my previous coaches didn't get into as much. Lessons always feel like you are making useful progress and never like you're just at the range with someone watching. changes things up each time, integrating some chipping practice, putting, etc. as you go so things never feel stale.
