Not inexpensive and the course has been under construction for years - what can the delay be in finishing it. Cart paths are teeth rattlers in most places and a constant construction zone around club house. My round was a prepaid gift but they couldn't figure it out so I was charged. My daughter called and they straightened it. The course itself is very fun and very well maintained. read more

This is a very beautiful course. I was just passing by and played a round here. I really enjoyed the the course. It's certainly a tournament course. The fairways are very well maintained, the greens are nice and it's fast, the sands are white and soft. April was the best time to play in AZ before the 100 degree heat comes in. There's 4 different colored tee box, so it's pretty long. The Carts are very nice and it's got chrome rims. lol. Ice chest on every cart. the staffs will clean your clubs when you return. Awesome service. What's bad: the greens are very fast, very challenging and very tricky to putt. But it's a lot of fun for sure. read more

Course is average at best. ASU has to be disappointed that this is their home course, Karsten was so much better. Price was way too much for condition of course. Very rocky cart paths and no beverage cart to be seen. Plenty of other courses in the area that are much nicer than this for the same price. read more

Beautiful golf course with very friendly staff. The views here are amazing. My golf game sucks here because I'm so distracted by the mountain views (yup, that's my excuse - and I'm sticking to it!). Odd that you can drive to some areas then the cart just locks - so you have to reverse to get out of the situation you're in. Wished you could just "drive out" of the area because hello - I may not be the best cart driver. Also a few holes were oddly near each other (I think hole 1 and 10?!) and you were sort of in each other's way. read more

I will need to come back and play during peak season. Many golf courses are having a hard time with their grass during this summer. Papago is absolutely one of them. I don't want to say this was the worse condition course I have ever been to. But It's very close. The first cut from the Green are being patched in on most of the holes. Makes it a difficult day. Their GPS on their carts is very difficult to figure out where and where not to drive. You will spend a good portion of your round backing up. Besides trying to avoid hitting some homeless people off of hole #5. It was a very adventurous day. read more

Unfortunately this course seems to have a problem with women. Overall the course is great, but we were here with a group of 5 golfers (two tee times, but not playing together) and we were approached by the rangers multiple times when the group ahead of us (that was a group of 6) didn't get approached at all. Once again, if you're men- fantastic course. If you're a woman- know that you'll be talked down to and pushed along (even though you're waiting on every shot for the men in front of you). read more

Gorgeous golf course! We didn't golf, but we came for a "welcome drinks" event for a destination wedding and it was absolutely beautiful! The bartenders were extremely friendly and the event space was stunning providing an overlook view of the city from a distance with string lights on the lawn and a fire pit! read more

PLayed 11/7 in the afternoon. I recently had the opportunity to experience what was supposed to be a collegiate-level golf course, and the overall experience left me questioning whether it deserved the high praise it received. I paid over $100 for a round of golf, complete with a litany of disappointments that made me question the value I received for my money. One of the first glaring issues with this course was the need for proper cart paths. Instead of the expected well-maintained paths, we were left navigating through dirt and rough terrain. This not only detracted from the aesthetic appeal of the course but also made for an unpleasant and dusty ride. Furthermore, it was clear that the course had been designed with little regard for spacing between holes. The result was an incredibly cramped layout, with holes positioned on each other. This lack of spacing disrupted the flow of play and made it difficult to enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings. To add to the discomfort, the course was shorter, leaving much to be desired for players seeking a more challenging and engaging experience. I also couldn't help but notice the poor pace of play. A round of 18 holes took an astonishingly long six hours to complete. This unacceptable pace significantly impacted my overall enjoyment of the game. Moreover, I was paired with three walkers while I had a cart, which only exacerbated the pace of play issue. To make matters worse, right before teeing off, I noticed three golfers in carts playing behind our group. When I inquired with the staff about joining them to speed up our play, I was met with a refusal. This lack of flexibility and courtesy from fellow players, as enforced by the staff, was a significant disappointment. The most frustrating aspect of my visit was the absence of rangers to help manage the pace of play. It was surprising to see no one taking responsibility for ensuring a reasonable flow on the course. To make matters worse, the beverage cart service could have been more present, and I only saw the cart lady once during the entire round. To top it all off, the cart provided was old, had visible rips, and was equipped with an outdated GPS. This was particularly bothersome as the GPS needed to accurately reflect the current course layout. Two holes still needed to be updated, showing the previous course layout, which needed to be clarified and more frustrating. Thankfully, the person I was paired with was aware of this issue. In summary, this course is overrated and does not live up to the expectations of its price tag. Given the lack of cart paths, cramped layout, slow pace of play, and outdated equipment, this course should not cost more than $40 for a round, including a cart. It's an average course, masquerading as a premier golfing experience. My experience left me questioning the reputation and value of this supposed "collegiate-level" course. I was so excited to play here, but after about hole 4, it felt like a kid walking downstairs on Christmas to be disappointed with no presents. Imagine paying over $100 to walk down the stairs to be disappointed. read more

I'm back to golf after a 45 year hiatus, just been to the driving range twice this week. The staff could NOT be friendlier and more helpful. The views of the Papago buttes are breathtaking and I found myself stopping between shots just to take in the backdrop. Masking in pro shop and in crowded zones. Have not tried the restaurant/bar as of yet. I plan to make this part of my routine. read more

An incredibly unique and challenging course. Part two of my companies annual golf weekend in Arizona (the first being Ocotillo)...and despite the water features being extremely rare on this course, my ball found a way! Incredibly long fairways and somewhat narrow...spent a lot of time amongst the rabble of cacti and rocks. Overall, the greens were in excellent condition. I loved the elevated tee boxes which mimicked a driving range giving you that extra lift. The club house is top notch and the food was killer. My only concern might have more to do with my previous evening's activities than the course itself...but those cart paths (or rather lack of cart paths) really sucked! Well it's the middle of the summer and the heat has reached triple digits. 102' today. I played here a week ago and the course is dry and extremely sad looking. I'd like to say that it is a summer issue but I played Ocotillo yesterday and it was top notch even for being the beginning of the summer. Anyways, I showed up early for my round and decided to do some pitching and putting. Their pitching area is extremely burnt out or muddy so I decided to take 20 feet back and pitch off the very side of the driving range deck. 20 mins into my practice I had a cart boy come and tell me I couldn't pitch off of the driving range deck. Strong pass from now on. I heard Phil Mickelson dropped a whole Lotta money in this course but I'll tell you what, that money is gone in this course is going downhill fast. Save your money and play somewhere else. This is an outdated course that needs a lot of water and some better management. read more

I went to play here yesterday because people said it was better and boy they were wrong. I'll never play Papago again. $67 two holes were closed, no cart paths and entire course is being renovated. It's the same course and they'll need to do a lot more than they are to make it nice. Club house and range are nice but course isn't worth $20. I feel bad for the kids who want to golf at ASU and have to play here. Not worth the price in the middle of the summer. Golf now didn't say holes were closed or under renovation. Felt like bait and switch. read more

This golf course is historic in the Phoenix area. It's a city course, recently been renovated in a partnership with ASU golf. First, do be aware that pace of play is indeed a big deal here. Lots of regulars line up to play and they're used to keeping the game moving along. It's a golf course in the desert, set up against beautiful red buttes. Expect to find dry, rocky desert just off the fairway, jack rabbits popping out from under shrubs and an occasional coyote. Beginning with dropping off your clubs at the curb, you'll find staff that is welcoming, energetic and enthusiastic about how well your day is going to go. The pro shop is beautiful and fully stocked with lots of gear for golf. There's a wide driving range and at the end closest to the putting green, you'll usually find a golf instructor giving lessons. The ASU golf program is now at Papago Golf Course and the management of the pro shop and golf staffing is highly experienced. Note: They were just installing the smart carts and a new computerized program when we played. It's important to get guidance on how to use it so you'll know when you're too close to the green and where you should park the cart at each hole. Another note, the pricing has increased since the renovation. Be aware of the new fees. After your round, be sure and get food and drink at Lou's. It's a beautiful place to watch the sunset (there's often live music), talk about the round, and people watch. It's a nice restaurant, too, for dinner on a Friday night! read more

TLDR: Course was great, most of the staff was great but the completely unrealistic expectation of pace of play ruined a day of scramble style golf. A group of us went out to play a scramble style round on a Sunday morning. The course was great, staff at check in were awesome. We arrived early for our tee time so we grabbed a drink and the bar staff at Lou's were all fantastic. The issues started on the first tee box. As we began teeing off (we had two tee times for 8 of us) we were rushed. Halfway through the hole we were asked to "go ahead and pick up". At that point the next tee time hadn't been reached and we were chipping into the green. The person who was I charge of keeping the pace of play drove next to us until the 6th hole. I'm very used to someone checking in and making sure you are not spending too much time at a tee box or on a single shit. This was NOT that. We were being babysat. I played competively in High School and college, have played tons of courses in the 10 years since and have never had someone be so rude and inconsiderate. By hole 5 we were all so irritated by this man lurking over our shoulder, harassing and telling us "that was a great shot the rest of you shouldn't even hit, just play from there" that we decided we would skip the ENTIRE 6th hole after a single person out of 4 tee'd off and he suggested that we should "just drop a ball and chip on" because we were so far behind. The smart cart we were on specifically noted we were "1 minute behind pace." The worst part about this is that we were being encouraged to hit into players in front of us and the group behind us was, on average, half a hole behind us the entire time they never had to wait at a tee box for us. There was ABSOLUTELY no reason a staff member should have been following us that closely or suggesting that we just don't play golf, when we paid in full to play and we're not an impediment. There was NO WAY anyone could have played at an Acceptable pace unless they qualified for a pro tournament. read more

A golf course with some pretty cool views that I can dig. It's the future home of the ASU golf team so you know this course is going to get even better. This is a challenging track with a fair amount of undulation throughout the course. I liked that the greens held well and rolled nicely. Given that the weather is heating up and conditions tend to dry out, I found the course to be pretty plush and green. They're currently going through some clubhouse renovations and what you will find is a contemporary design... something I've hardly seen in the traditional, old-looking design of most golf facilities. This newer face adds a much young and hip look to a sport that people often view as an old man's hobby. If you plan on playing in the next four to six months, their practice facility won't be ready until spring so if you need to warm up before your round, find a close golf course to get the kinks out and then head on over to Papago. read more

Played another nice round here today. By far the best of the courses you can play with the PHX City Card. Nice greens, great staff, nice carts with courts mapping on screen. Solid mix of holes that are a little bit of a challenge and nice views of the buttes and planes going by. I also like that they always clean your clubs off at the end of the round and have the cooler filed with ice for you when you head out! Our favorite course to play so far in the Valley. read more

I am 5-staring this place based on the unbelievable service we received. This year I chaired the 2018 Annual AZ APCO/NENA Charity Golf Outing (AZ APCO/ NENA is a joint chapter representing Arizona's 911/emergency response professionals). Our golf tournaments are small and keeping the cost low are a must for a charitable organization. With that said a lot of the nicer courses aren't as willing to work with us. When we got to Papago we were met by the General Manager Daryl Crawford. I am going to consolidate my review because I could talk days about Daryl and his support staff but suffice it to say from negotiating the group costs all the way to the day of the outing we received the most top notch service. In fact there was a much larger outing that started shortly after us and we still never noticed any lack of support from Daryl or his people. If you have an outing I would 100% recommend you check out Papago Golf Course. And of course meet with Daryl! read more

I have played a number of golf courses in the Phoenix area and this is one of the worst places to play. The greens were terribly bumpy. Bunkers were crunchy hard dirt...no sand. BUYER BEWARE!!! I hadn't played Papago in several years so was excited to get a round in with a friend that moved out recently. I noticed on their website a fairly vanilla notice about construction taking place and figured it wouldn't be too bad considering they were still charging $55 in the summer. Turns out it was as if a bomb went off. Crazy loud due to Jack hammering, the whole course was poorly maintained, 3 holes had temporary greens that were spray painted in the fairway (6, 9 and 18 if I remember) and not cut any shorter than fairway. It's essentially a par 68. I sincerely wouldn't have minded how poor this course played had the online notice been more explicit about the level of construction actually taking place and if they dropped the price down to $25-30 or given us free range balls ($7/small bucket) and meal voucher or something to make up for it. Pace of play was about 4:30 and backed up a decent amount due to the construction. Plenty of folks were also playing 2 balls - I don't blame them given the course's condition but still frustrating and there was no one monitoring pace of play either. Personally, I won't be back until construction is fully complete and I'll still be a little hesitant given how little integrity there is right now around the course's true condition. 1.5 stars as the Breakfast sandwich was decent, cart gal was nice and the views are always solid at Papago. Note also that they only play 18 on Sat/Sun. M-F is 9 holes only. read more

Can't say enough about this course the STAFF and the AMAZING new facility! Showed up with eight guys for a little Birthday golf and were treated to an awesome day with great golf (same designer as Torrey Pines in San Diego in case you didn't know), awesome service (thanks Daryl and Rob!!), and great food!(Lou's food is amazing!). The new facility will be amazing for events when we get back to having them, and the course can be as challenging as you can handle (the Tips are no joke). Skip some of the crazy expensive "resort" courses and go play a valley gem! Papago!! read more

The restaurant is a great place to hang out. It was long time since I've been there and the remodel was great. The course was in decent shape, but there was something about it that I didn't like. The lack of cart path and signs made it a bit confusing from hole to hole. The lay out was decent, but wish it had more elevation changes or just something a bit different. I will have to give it another try and see if it changes my mind. Also, I went there another time to meet friends to go to the range before we had dinner and drinks. It was a Saturday and when we arrived, around 4 pm, the pro shop told us they stopped selling range balls. WHAT? Why would the range stop selling range balls when there was plenty of light out still. That's easy money that they missed, but more so, there was nothing on their website that stated they stoped selling range balls that early. Our kids were not happy. I would think a course would sell range balls for as long as there was light out, to make as much money as possible. read more
